Breitbart “News” Race-Baiting Fails Again: Man Vandalized His Own Truck With Anti-Cop Messages

Oops
US News • Views: 70,433

Last week the Texas cell of Breitbart “News” published one of their typical nasty race-baiting articles about a West Texas man who claimed his truck had been vandalized with anti-police messages: Disabled Vet’s Truck With Pro-Cop Message Vandalized: ‘Black Lives Matter’.

In the usual Breitbart fashion, Lana Shadwick (who’s described as the “legal analyst for Breitbart Texas”) included absurdly inflammatory statements about Black Lives Matter that were completely unrelated to the story, because the commenters need their red meat.

“Black Lives Matter” and #FYF (F**k Your Flag) graffiti was sprayed in black paint on the outside of his truck. The vandals defaced the truck with “F**k your flag, your family, your feelings, your faith,” and tore up the inside of the truck .

#FYF911 or #FYF “black radicals” promise to hold the “imperial powers” responsible for the terrorist attacks on September 11th accountable on Friday, as previously reported by Breitbart Texas. Supporters pledge to burn white people’s symbols of “the illusion of their superiority” and their “false white supremacy.” Those include items such as the American flag, the British flag, police uniforms, and Ku Klux Klan hoods.

Breitbart Texas published photographs posted on one #F**k Your Flag supporter’s Twitter pages—a black male and a black female wiping their naked butts with an American flag.

[…]

Breitbart Texas reported on August 28th that members of the #FYF911 or #FukYoFlag and #BlackLivesMatter movements called for the lynching and hanging of white people and cops. They encouraged others on a radio show to “turn the tide” and kill white people and cops to send a message about the killing of black people in America.

New Black Panthers marched on the Waller County Jail where Sandra Bland died and shouted, “You’re gonna stop doing what you’re doing, or we will start creeping up on you in the darkness,” as reported by Breitbart Texas.

But today, in a setback for the race-baiting right wing propagandists, Scott Lattin was arrested and charged with vandalizing his own truck.

A Central Texas man who claimed anti-police vandals had attacked the family pickup truck has been arrested after police believe he vandalized the truck.

Scott Lattin, a disabled veteran, told Whitney police on Sept. 8 someone tagged his truck with “Black Lives Matter” and other graffiti because he displayed pro-police messages and symbols on his pickup.

But on Friday afternoon, Whitney police arrested Lattin on a misdemeanor charge of making a false police report.

“Very disturbing,” said Whitney Police Chief Chris Bentley. Bentley said the investigation turned to Lattin because after FOX4 first broke the story.

“We had initial video when the officers took the report and then when we saw your story on Channel 4. When we looked at those two videos, there were some differences in those and that led us to take the investigation into a different direction,” Bentley said.

Bentley said when they took the report there was no damage to the inside of the truck. But when FOX4 showed up, Lattin showed that the glove box was ripped off and the seats slashed.

Lattin denies the charges by police that he vandalized his own vehicle, telling FOX4, “That’s absolutely not true! Absolutely not true.”

But Lattin’s arrest warrant affidavit said Lattin admitted damaging the inside of his vehicle for insurance reasons.

Once again, Breitbart “News” jumps the gun and accuses the Black Lives Matter movement of criminal activity — then steps on the rake of reality. Right wing journalism for the win!

Oh, and of course, the Breitbart audience responded to the original article with hundreds of blatantly racist comments. A few excerpts:

I’d like to see the culprits under the wheels of his truck. #roadkilllivesmatter

[…]

Civilized lives matter. These nasty little hood rats, not so much.

[…]

The only thing black lives matter stands for is being able to commit any crimes or vandalism with impunity…not going to happen

[…]

Why should black lives matter when they do things like this?

[…]

ALL NI33ERS MUST DIE.

Speaking of useless: took the political compass test again to see how I fare (in the vicinity of -5 on both axes) and then they offered a printable PDF certificate. I took a look and Obama stands there between Milton Friedman and Ludwig von Mises. Which sorta indicates the “value” of this test.

(I wonder though how many right-wing heads exploded because of this.)

Kim Davis needs to go back to jail.

talkingpointsmemo.com

An attorney for Deputy Clerk Brian Mason said Friday afternoon that Rowan County clerk Kim Davis removed her name from the county’s marriage license forms, which may disobey a federal judge’s order, the Associated Press reported.

According to court documents, Mason told his lawyer Davis confiscated all original forms upon her arrival back at work on Sept. 14, and provided a replacement that deleted her name and all mentions of the county.

“F**k your flag, your family, your feelings, your faith.”

This is a textbook caricature of the kinds of things a conservative believes a liberal #BLM supporter would think and say. It bears no resemblance to reality, liberals don’t say shit like “fuck your faith.” It’s entirely like white male conservatives however to conflate their faith, their family and their flag with their core identity, and assume everyone else associates politics with a battle over these same symbols and institutions.

Also, the capital L’s are VERY similar in both messages, same upward bending lower stroke.

…The family says insurance is helping with a rental car for a few days. While their claim check won’t cover all repairs, even if they have to get a can of white spray paint, the plan is to get the truck going again, decorated with blue ribbons and the saying, “Police lives matter.”

Because it was, self-perpetrated by a wingnut trying to grab their own little piece of the wingnut welfare pie. Thing is, he might have gotten away with it, had he not tore up the inside of the cab after he filed the police report, but before the Fox affiliate came to tape their story.

Earlier this week, after McCain economic adviser Carly Fiorina bluntly declared that neither Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) nor Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin were capable of running a major corporation, McCain campaign officials told CNN that Fiorina would “disappear” because McCain was “furious” at her comments. Though the official said “disappear” meant that she “would be off TV for a while,” Fiorina’s appearance at a Republican rally in Florida was abruptly canceled on Friday.

I had hoped, in vain, that this issue would have been raised at the “debate”:

British scientists seek to edit the genes of embryos; bioethicists warn of potential dangers

Earlier this year, Chinese scientists caused an international furor when they reported that they had taken 86 human embryos and attempted to modify the gene that causes β-thalassaemia, a blood disorder that is potentially fatal.

[…]

Now another group of scientists — this time from Britain — is seeking permission to conduct similar experiments, raising the stakes for the technology.

Kathy Niakan, a stem-cell researcher at the Francis Crick Institute in London, has told the country’s regulators that her work will focus on trying to understand what genes are at play during the first few days after fertilization, according to a report in the Guardian. She would switch genes off and on to study how the modifications impacted the development of the cells that form the placenta.

[…]

The embryos would come from donations from couples who had undergone IVF treatment and would only be used for basic research. It would be illegal for them to be implanted in a woman and allowed to grow more than two weeks.

Several other British scientists spoke out in support of the research. Peter Braude, emeritus professor of obstetrics and gynecology at King’s College London, said in a statement that the research “is about better understanding nature, not changing embryos for implantation.”

Sarah Chan, a fellow at the Usher Institute for Population Health Sciences and Informatics at the University of Edinburgh said that the news should be “cause of confidence, not concern.”

[…]

The reaction from others in the scientific community, however, was one of alarm.

“This proposal is a troubling and provocative move,” said Marcy Darnovsky, executive director of the Center for Genetics and Society. “Modifying the genes of human embryos is deeply controversial because it can be used for worthwhile research on the one hand, or to produce genetically modified human beings on the other. A global public conversation about preventing such misuses is just getting underway, and this proposal could short-circuit those deliberations.”

[…]

This “Center for Genetics and Society” always pipes up with anything to do with DNA. They are quite ideologically opposed to anything having to do with DNA, not just humans but other organisms. They are, if you will allow me to use the term, the “staunch conservatives” in regards to DNA. They are, in my opinion, more like the Discotute than one might at first glance imagine. Looking around their website there are little crumbs of talking points that seem awfully familiar.

She is the second longest lasting companion in Doctor Who History, from first to last main appearance (Asylum of the Daleks to Hell Bent (Both as her Echoes)). Only the Brigadier lasted longer.

When she departs in late December, she will have been a companion for 3 years, and 3 months. Longer than most Doctors in fact. Only the 3rd, 4th, 10th, and 11th lasted longer.

And Doctor Who is an intense show.

Technically, I think Amy’s character appeared as long if not longer (first episode of season five to the end of the Xmas special after season seven)..

And, as much as I will bawl my eyes out when it happens, Clara could not go any other way. She already sacrificed herself once. And she wasn’t afraid of being killed when in the Graveyard in Dark Water.

She cares enough for the Doctor that she is willing to do the reverse of Doctor Who history. More than once, a Doctor regenerated to save a companion.

She would die to save the Doctor. I am confident this is how it will turn out.

The bad thing about lying habitually is that you eventually lose the compass which tells you what lies you can get away with.
The bad thing about living on a steady diet of lies is that eventually, you become so accustomed to the lies that truth appears fake to you.

Clara: But the echoes could save the Doctor, right?
River: But they won’t be you. The real you will die. They’ll just be copies.

And Clara jumped in anyway…based on that, even if she dies now, copies of her may still be there, anywhere or anywhen the Doctor needs an Impossible Girl…

A talented, battle-tested GOP field
Ask yourself: Which side would you rather be on now?

If one were to exclude Trump from the equation (granted, an enormous “if,” given that his ego spans several area codes), the Republican field might be the most talented field of candidates ever assembled. (I will give my Democrat friends a brief moment to wipe up the kale smoothie that likely just rocketed from their nostrils.)

In the field, there are at least five candidates that can make a plausible case for the presidency: Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, John Kasich, Chris Christie and Scott Walker. Each one has a resume of substance, with concrete accomplishments under his belt. Four of them served as successful governors in swing states, and Rubio — the one many Democrats have said they are most afraid of facing — has a preternatural ability to articulate his optimistic vision for America.

(That doesn’t mean each of them doesn’t have challenges, of course — Walker and Christie are both hanging on, hoping for those Trump votes to eventually swing their way.)

Quickly making her way onto this list is the emergent Carly Fiorina, who has run a flawless campaign to date. She is tough, smart, and prepared, and has muscled her way into the discussion by the sheer force of her debate performances. Ben Carson still has a long way to go to be a plausible politician, but hey — the guy is a world-class intellect. Is there anyone on the Democratic side you would let crack your skull open?

..that’s Uhuru, Come on!

Gene Roddenberry had intended his new female communications officer to be called “Lieutenant Sulu”.[2] Herb Solow pointed out how similar this was to “Zulu” and thought it might act against the plan for racial diversity in the show, so the name Sulu remained with George Takei’s character.[3] “Uhura” comes from the Swahili word uhuru, meaning “freedom”. Nichols states in her book Beyond Uhura that the name was inspired by her having had with her a copy of Robert Ruark’s book Uhuru on the day she read for the part. When producer Robert Justman explained to Roddenberry what the word uhuru meant, he changed it to Uhura and adopted that as the character’s name.[3] Coincidentally, the end credits of the film Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country incorrectly refer to Uhura as “Uhuru”.

Transcript of prank Koch-Walker conversation

Murphy: Right, right. Well, we’ll back you any way we can. But, uh, what we were thinking about the crowds was, uh, was planting some troublemakers.

Walker: You know, the, well, the only problem with that — because we thought about that. The problem — the, my only gut reaction to that is right now the lawmakers I’ve talked to have just completely had it with them, the public is not really fond of this. The teachers union did some polling of focus groups, I think, and found out that the public turned on ‘em the minute they closed school down for a couple days. The guys we’ve got left are largely from out of state, and I keep dismissing it in all my press conferences saying, ‘Eh, they’re mostly from out of state.’ My only fear would be is if there was a ruckus caused is that that would scare the public into thinking maybe the governor has gotta settle to avoid all these problems. You know, whereas, I’ve said, ‘Hey, you know, we can handle this, people can protest. This is Madison, you know, full of the ’60s liberals. Let ‘em protest.’ It’s not gonna affect us. And as long as we go back to our homes and the majority of the people are telling us we’re doing the right thing, let ‘em protest all they want. Um, so that’s my gut reaction, is that I think it’s actually good if they’re constant, they’re noisy, but they’re quiet, nothing happens, ‘cause sooner or later the media stops finding ‘em interesting.

Relevant factoid: The Appeals Court that struck down the lower court ruling stating that the congressional defunding of ACORN constituted a Bill of Attainder did so on the rationale that ACORN only received 10% of its total funds from the federal government. Therefore, because of the smallish percentage the defunding was not considered “punishment.” The case never went to the Supreme Court.

Planned Parenthood is estimated to receive 40% of it’s total revenue from the federal government. It’s my guess that there are a sold four votes on the Supreme Court that would term defunding them based on the deceptive videos as an unconstitutional Bill of Attainder, with Kennedy as a toss up. This assumes the case even gets that far though, which it won’t because the GOP would have to override a certain veto.

The police in Irving - and those associated with the Texas Municipal Police Association - are still digging a hole:

Friday evening, the Texas Municipal Police Association released the following statement on the incident, saying officers involved “followed proper protocol”

“Whether it was a prank or intended to cause an absolute emergency response, it meets the legal definition of a hoax bomb. There’s no doubt in our mind it was intended to cause people concern,” said Kevin Lawrence of the TMPA. “For anyone to come out and say the officers overreacted, it’s counterproductive, it’s damaging to the officers, the relationships between the officers and the public.”

OT, but I will make a prediction about Doctor Who.

Clara is insanely loyal to the Doctor. The only way she will leave, is in a Pine Box. I think she will be flat out killed.

If the scriptwriters really wanted to, they could strand Clara in the 1800s, make her a lookalike to Queen Victoria, and replace Vicky as Queen.

I was thinking—Ahmed said that the first teacher he showed the clock to, instead of praising him as he clearly expected, advised him not to show it to anyone else. That says to me that teacher knew full well what kind of bias exists in that school/town. The other teacher, then the principal, cop, etc. also (over)reacting negatively confirms it.

Still, the most damning part is that they didn’t evacuate the school, which they surely would’ve done if they’d believed there was even the remotest possibility of a real threat.

Phoenix freeway-shootings suspect Leslie Allen Merritt Jr. tied to first 4 incidents

[…]

Authorities identified the suspect as Leslie Allen Merritt Jr., 21.

[…]

Merritt’s father, Leslie Merritt Sr., became physically ill after learning about his son’s arrest.

“Whoever said my son is the freeway shooter is a moron,” he said from his home in Mesa. “It’s got to be some sort of mistake or someone wanted the reward. This is just preposterous.”

Merritt Sr. said his son works as a landscaper, just as he does, and works 12 to 15 hours a day to support his family.

“He has been raised with too much respect for life and too much for firearms” to have done this, he said.

Hmmm…

Michael Fassbender (born 2 April 1977)[2] is a German-Irish actor of stage and screen whose oeuvre includes roles in both independent and blockbuster films.

Jobs’s biological father, Abdulfattah “John” Jandali (b. 1931), was born into a Muslim household and grew up in Homs, Syria.[9]

LOL. @Shoq is doing another one of his patented 3 hours of nonstop contrarian pedantry, this time trying to analyze Ahmed’s clock. I don’t know what to make of that guy.

[Embedded content]

Speaking as a geek/nerd, when I was in high school, I liked to show people what I could do, which generally involved math problems or borrowing an Apple 2e from the school and writing code (we couldn’t afford a comparable computer at the time). I didn’t show it off to show how good I was, I showed it off because it was neat. Actually, I’m still like that. When I show something in code I’ve written, it’s not to brag, it’s because it was a really cool thing to write and I want other people to see it.

Now, a big part of the time, most people don’t care about it as much as me, even people at the company I work at. So, at times, people perceive it as bragging.

So, for him, he thought it was cool. Yes, he was trying to show what he could do. But it was about how cool it is to be able to create something like that, for the pure act of doing it.

So as it turns out tensions with Russia have been good to the Leopard 2 Main Battle Tank, as the Dutch have decided to use their Infantry Fighting Vehicles as part of a German division and retain 18 leased Leopard 2s instead of removing the tank from their inventory. All 16 remaining Dutch tanks will be transferred to Germany then upgraded to the Leopard 2A7 standard before being leased back.

Now, this is the kind of EU integration I like: MBT upgrades, new IFVs, real strength being built for common defense.

Good morning Lizards.

Had an unscheduled “no computer day” since Thursday. Apartment building had a planned power outage then to replace some electrical equipment. However, when they brought the power back on it appears some piece of Comcast-owned equipment did not come back up successfully. So no cable TV or internet until late Friday afternoon when they finally got things working again. (And I opted to read books Friday night instead of be on-line.)

Finished _The Martian_ . It should go on the Recommended List on Books for Lizards. Good sci-fi treatment of a survival adventure and it grabs and keeps your attention. And the basic scenario is very well set up in the first six pages.

On the browser front I traced my CPU/memory eating issue to the Flash players. Disabled it in Chrome and the browser is much better behaved. I suspect that it is essentially the same issue with Firefox. And why these were eating up much more memory that the site comparing 10 browsers said they would use - since they didn’t evaluate plug-ins.

Also plan on doing a walkabout tomorrow with the camera to take pictures of preparation work for the Papal visit to Philly. Lines of port-a-potties everywhere.

My general opinion is to read books first. That allows your imagination full play in imaging what you think things look like. The movie will interfere with that. I’ve just seen trailers for the movie and I was default associating Matt Damon with the events in the book as I read it.

It’s a thin parse, and missed a chance to simply express that “so what if he is Muslim, Sunni or Shia?” Last I heard about religious accusations aimed at a sitting President, it was that the Pope was gonna run America. (Kennedy)

Frankly I think “And what exactly do you think that means if he is” might be the best answer. Following up we can show both that he is not, and that all those millions of Muslims that live here do not deserve any less respect than anyone else.

Another way to describe this attitude is as more extremely conservative than the Puritans that landed here. Question to put becomes, “so.. the Puritans were too liberal for ya?”

Well, I’d avoid any Robert Spencer translations or commentary. //

I’d agree with Sergey’s #317. Like the Tanakh, the New & Old Testaments, and I’m sure many other scriptures, there’s a large body of scholarly Qur’anic exegesis out there. In any event that’s only one aspect of the religion.

Also, as WZ said in his #310, a lot is going to depend on his intent—people usually find what they’re looking for (confirmation bias).

Last but not least, easy to understand & accurate are two different things and asking for one translation to be both is a tall order, as is saying which is the “best” one—you’ll get as many opinions as there are people. Any translation you read is going to involve some interpretation, so a verse may seem to have a very different meaning in one translation than the other. There are some that use the simplest possible language, some that are very literal, some that strive to convey the “feeling” (poetic language, rhythm) of the original Arabic, etc. There are also some whose accuracy has been questioned (keep in mind we’re talking about 7th century Classical Arabic here).

FYI, there are also Qur’an “browsers” like this one that will allow you to choose verses and compare translations, side-by-side. My personal favorite is Yusuf Ali, but then I have the version that includes the commentary (which, IMO is pretty much essential to understanding the context of what’s being read—even then, you’re only getting part of the picture).

Sorry I don’t have a simpler answer for you.

re: #305 A Mom Anon

Just my take as a guy that spent time looking at all the big religions and some portion of the major written material, maybe it’s good time to point out that just skimming any of them will give false impressions. From our own Old Testament the difference between thou shall not kill and thou shall not murder (a more accurate, less simple interpretation) jumps out as a salient example. Literary land mines abound.

IMHO there is much good to be found right across the board. But a lot was written in desperate times and by tribal peoples. The best translation imaginable is lacking. I learned to be very wary of those that want to cherry pick.

P.S. (snipped):

Koran (Quran? Oh help, I feel like a doofus).

Either one. The “Q” in Quran (sometimes spelled Qur’an) represents a sound that doesn’t exist in English, so the “K” spelling is not only a transliteration it’s also an Anglicization. Unfortunately, there’s no standard transliteration of Arabic.

If there is any way that he could meet some PEOPLE who have Korans and talk to them, he could see they are just nicely dressed (usually) people. I hate to think he could think of it as an opportunity for surveillance, but it still could be a good proposal for sincere curiosity.

Finished _The Martian_ . It should go on the Recommended List on Books for Lizards. Good sci-fi treatment of a survival adventure and it grabs and keeps your attention. And the basic scenario is very well set up in the first six pages.

Hmmm I think I know where that may just show up, Was gonna post it when the movie first screens widely.

The most hideous woman in America tries to outdo her daughter.

Sarah Palin: Ahmed Was Asking For It When He Brought His Clock To School

“Right. That’s a clock, and I’m the Queen of England.”

Here’s a little word salad.

“Friends, consider the kids disciplined and/or kicked out of school for bringing squirt guns to school or taking bites out of a pop tart until it resembled (to some politically correct yahoo) a gun. Or the student out deer hunting with his dad early one morning who forgot he had a box of ammo in his truck when he parked in the school’s lot later that day,” she wrote. “Whereas Ahmed Muhammad, an evidently obstinate-answering student bringing in a homemade ‘clock’ that obviously could be seen by conscientious teachers as a dangerous wired-up bomb-looking contraption (teachers who are told ‘if you see something, say something!’) gets invited to the White House.”

She created herself, and I don’t think McCain had any idea she’d become this bad when he chose her as his running mate. Remember that she wasn’t nasty like she is now back in the fall of 2008. The nastiness is a later trait she’s cultivated to appeal to people who don’t like John McCain because he’s not a bigot.

I would recommend to Senator McCain that he take some time to meet with the young Mr. Muhammad when he stops by Capitol Hill and thus give his former running mate a well earned thumb to the eye.

I do feel bad for such a kid but schools do have rules about guns on their property. And again, I doubt those kids were arrested in front of the whole school. Sarah ignores that Ahmed was humiliated in front of his classmates and harassed by police who refused to believe that his clock was a clock.

Thinking a bit more on Trump and his tweet. There was the speculation earlier this week in the one New Yorker article regarding Trump at Obama’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner and if that chip on the shoulder has any influence on what he is doing running for president today.

If there will be any sign, it sure would come in any opportunity to get in any type of payback. I think his last few days shows he will take those opportunities. That is why he will not apologize. He probably doesn’t feel the scales of injustice to TRUMP® have been put back in balance.

My post to Facebook today, after being hit over the head too many times:

Dear Facebook Friends:

I’m going to go off on a bit of a rant here. I wanted to get this written before Mr. Zuckerberg debuts that big fat “Unlike” button he’s supposed to be soon introducing.
If you don’t know by now where I stand politically, I’ve always swung to the left — although in varying degrees over the years. My initial exposure to politics those many, many centuries ago was in 1968 when Maine’s Ed Muskie was chosen by Hubert Humphrey as his running mate; in 1976, I was heartbroken when Mo Udall lost the Democratic nomination to Jimmy Carter.

I’ll confess to being a bit of a fuck-up as well — “he stayed out of trouble for the most part” isn’t much of a legacy, so maybe that’s why I’m a Democrat: the Democratic Party is the home of fuck-ups, dreamers, and square-pegs-in-round-holes.

I’ve breached the Great Divide from time to time, however. Although my voting history is heavily tilted to the “D” side, I’ll never be ashamed of my votes for Bill Cohen and Olympia Snowe. I could have supported either of those two had they run for national office, but would certainly have done the same with George Mitchell.

And I’ve had great friends on both sides of the political spectrum. Most of the friends I’ve had who’ve been on the liberal/left/Democratic side have been when I’ve lived in cities; most of the friends I’ve had who’ve been on the conservative/right/Republican side have been when I’ve lived in smaller areas.

So that said, I have to confess the following: I watched all THREE hours of the Republican debate Wednesday night, start to finish, and I wouldn’t pay a quarter for any of those guys if you gave me twenty cents change. Only two of all those people on stage didn’t come off as either a giant douche or turd sandwich, and both of those guys are stuck in single digits.

How does this apply to Facebook? I’m glad I asked that question.

If you want an example of what I would consider a good pro-Republican post, I would cite my niece, _____________’s recent post that celebrated Senator Susan Collins’ 6,000th consecutive vote. While I disagree with a lot of Senator Collins’s positions politically, that is one hell of an admirable achievement.

And I really do like your posts about your lives, family, friends, your kids, what shows you’re seeing, what your hobbies are, what you’re doing this weekend, that sort of thing. Not so crazy about the posts that think every single problem this country faces was caused by Some Random Democrat or that this country was some kind of magical paradise right up until January 20, 2009.

Yes, I voted for him. Twice.

Since the only other option is bidding Facebook a fond farewell - which I am loath to do - here’s what I feel I have to do in order to achieve some inner peace. Please be advised that this is not a permanent thing — as I indicated, I’m a bit of a fuck up and will likely get bored with the experiment in short order, possibly even as soon as tomorrow. And please note that this only applies to the easily disprovable stuff; stuff that’s true or hard to debunk gets a pass.

If you post something anti-Obama, I’m going to post something anti-Reagan or anti-Bush.

If you post something anti-Democrat, I’m going to post something anti-Republican.

If you post something that indicates what a smashing President Donald Trump would make, I’m going to post something directly from Hillary Clinton’s talking points.

If you post something that quotes Republican fiscal policies favorably, I’m going to post something from Bernie Sanders.

If you post something quoting Ted Nugent favorably, I’m going to write “I like boogers” in the comment section.

Thank you for your understanding. I hope we can all still be friends.

The Insiders
How John McCain came to pick Sarah Palin.

“…While Brickley and others were spreading the word about Palin on the Internet, Palin was wooing a number of well-connected Washington conservative thinkers. In a stroke of luck, Palin did not have to go to the capital to meet these members of “the permanent political establishment”; they came to Alaska. Shortly after taking office, Palin received two memos from Paulette Simpson, the Alaska Federation of Republican Women leader, noting that two prominent conservative magazines—The Weekly Standard, owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation, and National Review, founded by William F. Buckley, Jr.—were planning luxury cruises to Alaska in the summer of 2007, which would make stops in Juneau. Writers and editors from these publications had been enlisted to deliver lectures to politically minded vacationers. “The Governor was more than happy to meet these guys,” Joe Balash, a special staff assistant to Palin, recalled.”
……
Fred Barnes recalled being “struck by how smart Palin was, and how unusually confident. Maybe because she had been a beauty queen, and a star athlete, and succeeded at almost everything she had done.” It didn’t escape his notice, too, that she was “exceptionally pretty.”

It was cowardice. You act like it had to be Lieberman or Palin. You’re telling me that there was no on else who was sane and not nasty that would have been viable to Dobson? And that McCAin showed that kind of fear in regards to Dobson, well I am glad as hell he’s never going to be president.

….”McCain had met Palin once, but their conversation—at a reception during a meeting of the National Governors Association, six months earlier—had lasted only fifteen minutes. “It wasn’t a real conversation,” said the longtime friend, who called the choice of Palin “the fucking most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.” Aides arranged a phone call between McCain and Palin, and scrutinized her answers to some seventy items on a questionnaire that she had filled out. But McCain didn’t talk with Palin in person again until the morning of Thursday, August 28th. Palin was flown down to his retreat in Sedona, Arizona, and they spoke for an hour or two. By the time he announced her as his choice, the next day, he had spent less than three hours in her company.”

Yeah, I was open to listening to her until the GOP convention where she was first introduced and snarked (along with asshat Giuliani) about Obama being a “community organizer.” I couldn’t stand the sound or sight of her after that. Both of them here:

I’ve never forgiven the Republican Party for mocking that profession. Not as bad as the mocking of Senator Kerry’s purple hearts mind you but the trashing of a honorable profession just to score cheap political points. Too bad Obama didn’t have a “real job” like Mitt Romney did destroying other people’s livelihoods.

Palin was up to her eyeballs in nasty even during the ‘vetting’ process.

ANCHORAGE — Alaska’s former commissioner of public safety claims that Gov. Sarah Palin, John McCain’s pick to be vice president, personally talked to him on two occasions about a state trooper who was locked in a bitter custody battle with the governor’s sister.

“The governor did nothing wrong and has nothing to hide,” the McCain/Palin campaign said in a statement, blaming the issue on the campaign of the Democratic nominee, U.S. Sen. Barack Obama. “It’s outrageous that the Obama campaign is trying to attack her over a family issue. As a reformer and a leader on ethics reform, she has been happy to help out in the investigation of this matter, because she was never directly involved.”

But the trooper controversy has been swirling around Palin for weeks, long before Palin was launched Friday into the bright lights of the national campaign, and on Friday, Monegan said the governor had been involved.

He said that Palin raised the subject of Wooten with him herself on two occasions after becoming governor — once on the phone soon after she took office and once in person not long after that.

Monegan also said that the governor’s husband, Todd, talked to him several times about Wooten and that three top officials in her administration also contacted him.

Monegan also disclosed for the first time that Palin sent him two or three e-mails that referenced her ex-brother-in-law and his status with troopers. Monegan declined to provide the e-mails because of the ongoing investigation.

Monegan said he believes his firing was directly related to the fact Wooten stayed on the job. “It was a significant factor, if not the factor,” Monegan said.

No one from the McCain campaign ever contacted him to vet Palin as a candidate, Monegan said.

I remember the racial tensions here before the Rodney King beating and riots. I have the same ill feeling, gut level sense of instability. This time we have other amplifiers in play. Black President, that awful GOP base, the base that was never ever more base than now just looking for a street fight if they can’t have their way. I could recount a few choice inflammatory remarks, and not just by Trump either.

That was a time that had a lot of gun sales, a lot of ammo sales, years later a lot of forgotten guns in nightstands and closets. There was practically a line of students or customers for self defense classes and devices, be it Karate or handguns. Heck combining the two went very well for a few of us at the time. Lots of cops wanted that training on the side. Home alarm companies made bank. Gun ranges were packed.

Parts of my hometown burned. People died and almost died. Damn these guys that are stepping on the gas pedal of Us And Them. Don’t push violence to my doorstep.

My point is that she wasn’t as “good” at throwing out the red meat in 2008. The running mate is usually tasked with the dirty work of the campaign. She reached her zenith (or should I say nadir) in 2010. I bet she would have gone farther in 2008 if the campaign had let her.

Not cowardice, ambition. John McCain had worked long and hard for about a decade to get the Republican nomination and he wasn’t prepared to see all that effort wasted because James Dobson refused to accept his favored running mate (Joe Lieberman). Obama picked his VP pick to be someone that would be good for the country. McCain picked someone he thought would be good for the party. It may shock some people but Biden wasn’t necessarily loved by the base as the VP pick. A lot of people thought Obama went with too much of an insider, someone who had voted for the dreadful Iraq War resolution but cooler heads did prevail McCain OTOH picked a woman who hadn’t even been governor of her state (a state smaller than the DC Metro area by the way in regards to population) and who simply had a lot of popularity with the religious right who didn’t trust him. I don’t recall who else was being vetted but I resent the narrative being that McCain could have picked Lieberman or Palin and no one else. That’s crap. I am sorry, it is. And McCain acted like a politician rather than a statesman with his pick. Obama acted the total opposite.

There are pictures trotted out occasionally of President Reagan meeting with Mujahadeen leaders in the 1980s when they were fighting the Soviet forces in Afghanistan, President Bush walking hand in hand with the Saudi king and Rumsfeld glad-handing Saddam Hussein back during the Iraq-Iran war. They were not “sympathizing with terrorists”, they were carrying retail politics to the benefit of the United States at the time.

Republican Representative Pete King’s avowed support for the Maoist/Marxist IRA, on the other hand…

But those, at least, are known fact and part of the public record.

The ‘palling around with terrorists’ line was spun from equal parts crazed wingnut dreams and whole cloth.

And by Palin’s metric at the time, those instances most certainly would qualify as ‘palling around with terrorists’ - provided those were Democrats in those pictures and not Republicans.

Not to take anything away from the malignant effect of the Clinton impeachment circus on the body politic, but you certainly have to go back to Watergate.

I was actually disappointed by the Palin choice. Now I was an Obama guy all the way mind you but McCain was a guy I had respect for. I lost a lot of it for the way he conducted himself in the 2008 presidential campaign.

Not cowardice, ambition. John McCain had worked long and hard for about a decade to get the Republican nomination and he wasn’t prepared to see all that effort wasted because James Dobson refused to accept his favored running mate (Joe Lieberman). Instead he decided he wanted the presidency more than he wanted a sane running mate.

Rare indeed is the ambitious man who would have chosen otherwise.

Indeed.
And we voted two of them to the highest offices in the land in 2008 and 2012.

I work in an extremely Republican area and so keep my mouth shut about politics at work for the sake of harmony. Have a woman co-worker who loved Palin. Co-worker mentioned at a luncheon yesterday how much she likes Trump. Arghhh….

She did qualify that after seeing my expression. Doesn’t think he should be president but likes a lot of the things he says. Scary to realize how much bigotry motivates some people. Especially someone who works in such a diverse environment and should know better. At least she qualified her support. Sigh.

A Mom Anon  Sep 19, 2015 • 11:31:41am

I appreciate all the answers to my questions above about The Husband wondering about the Koran. I didn’t think it would be simple, but I wanted to address a couple things.

1)He’s not doing oppo research and he’s really not a wingnut. We live in a super right wing place and his friends were all born and raised here. He and I weren’t. My inlaws are liberal, my parents are not. I think he’s just genuinely curious about learning the truth vs what his friends pass around on Facebook and in emails. These guys are people he worked with for 15-20 yrs before he was let go in 2008 due to downsizing when the economy went to hell. I’m not fond of them, but after Obama got elected the racism and gun humping went over the top. I’m just surprised he stepped out of his comfort zone to explore something new. I’m encouraging that. He’s actually pushed back a little with some of the more crazy shit, like the training camps, supposedly near us. He told the dude we should go find the place since it’s nearby. He even tried to find it on MapQuest. Low and behold, it doesn’t exist, the location given in the stupid email is fake. Lesson for The Husband and the buffoon friend..

2) From what I can tell the nearest mosque to us is over an hour away. If there was one near here, the outcry and harassment would be over the top. I’ll run up to our library this week and see what they have. That might be a good place to start short of driving 60 miles.

Practically everything written is subject to interpretation. A religion is not just its holy book, but how the adherents of that religion see it, hence the huge diversity in what Christians feel about, say, social justice, or pacifism, or economic equality.

I think somebody who read the Bible may wonder what the heck it means when we say Jesus died for our sins. As far as I’m concerned, and there is a lot of historical and theological context to support this, is that Jesus came to preach the Beatitudes. IOW, what we should strive for instead of just what we shouldn’t do (as in the 10 Commandments).

Yesterday, it was finally That Time for our 19 year-old Eskie.

Kyoko in a rare contemplative moment

We got her from some friends, who discovered there’s more to owning a dog than simply getting one that matched the furniture. An America Eskimo Miniature mix, she had the acrobatic abilities and inclinations of the breed. She kept escaping from their yard by hopping up onto the top of the fence and walking along it before jumping off into the neighboring yard. We adopted her after an extended dogsitting gig while our friends visited family in Japan. When they came back Mrs. FBW and the dog’s owner discovered they were both thinking the same thing - that Kyoko would be happier with us.

And she was! For the next 16 years, she was a happy, playful bundle of energy, sweet and loving.

Yesterday, we laid her to rest next to her buddy, her brother, her Alpha, for whom she was The Enforcer with other dogs.

Good bye, old girl. Rest well. Thanks for all the love.

Been thinking about the kid who was arrested for bringing a homemade digital clock to school and the reaction of the police organizations in the area as well as the right wing media.

One thing that really annoys me is the whole “hoax bomb” talking point. Primarily because these folks seem to believe the Hollywood depictions of what a bomb should look like.

There are countless ways to build a bomb trigger and most look nothing like the Hollywood/TV props. Hollywood, for dramatic effect will show a “bomb” with a highly visible countdown timer. Makes good cinema, but is ridiculous in practice. I mean, who exactly is the display for and what purpose would it serve?

Not to mention that a simple kitchen timer could serve as an effective countdown device, and is much cheaper and much less work than building a custom timer from scratch.

Hate to see how those cops would react to this (my first computer, designed and built by me a long time ago):

I find the whole “hoax bomb” claim flimsy on a much more basic level: a hoax bomb is a device that is presented as a bomb to generate the kind of panic a bomb would.

Making a clock and presenting it to people as a clock means the device…whatever it is, however it’s made…is not functioning as a hoax.

It’s semantic ass-covering. It’s enough like a bomb to cause alarm, but not enough to actually apply safety measures; it’s a “hoax bomb” that wasn’t used to dupe anyone, nor was ever presented as an explosive.
