Here’s an absolutely great band playing some fun bluegrass-style music for a Sunday afternoon. Fiona Apple gets to be a dog in this one.

September 15, 2015 by BOB BOILEN
The Watkins Family Hour began a dozen or so years ago as a way for a group of friends to get together and play old and new tunes. For Sean and Sara Watkins, it served as a monthly bit of magic: a musical variety show filled with extraordinary talent in the world of folk, bluegrass and beyond at L.A.’s famous Largo.

Now, the Watkins siblings — known for their work in Nickel Creek, among many other projects — have taken their fiddle, guitar and charm on a country-flavored yellow brick road, gathering friends and surprises along the way. For this tour and their Tiny Desk Concert, their biggest surprise is the addition of Fiona Apple as a guest vocalist who actually yowls along to songs like the traditional tune “In The Pines.”

Watkins Family Hour is available now.

Update on Syria, Russia has moved 12 fixed wing combat to its airbase near Lattakia. 4 have not been ID’d, 4 are SU-24M2s (which Assad’s air force was already operating) and 4 have been ID’d as SU-30SMs (which are some Russia’s most modern fighters).

The presence of the SU-30s (and of a good deal else) has been confirmed by commercial satellite imagery. Here’s the article that sums it all up.

I like this song; it fits my brother.

As for the rest of their music, it’s no different than most of those movies that entertain us and are forgotten after a while.

At least I can say I was alive the last time we beat Florida (I was 7). None of the current players can. We never got a Florida team this prime to beat either. I got to play against the Rex Grossman(before he sucked) teams.

re: #13 #CampaignZero

So, what’s next?

Well, I can tell you we put our own smaller iron in that particular fire today:

Syria conflict: New US-backed rebels cross from Turkey

A group of 75 US-backed rebels has crossed into northern Syria from Turkey to fight jihadists, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says.

The rebels crossed into Syria in 12 vehicles equipped with machine guns over the weekend, it added.

[skipping over political HERP-a-DERP]

“Seventy-five new fighters trained in a camp near the Turkish capital entered Aleppo province between Friday night and Saturday morning,” said the observatory’s director, Rami Abdel Rahman.

The group entered the country in convoy under air cover from the US-led coalition, which has been targeting Islamic State (IS) militants in their strongholds in Syria and Iraq, he added.

He said the newly-trained fighters have been deployed to fight alongside the so-called Division 30 - the main US-trained group, as well as another group called Suqur al-Jabal (Falcons of the Mountain).

So this 2nd group of people we sent are actually be sent in a proper role, to embed themselves in a larger group and provide weapons support and to spot for airstrikes. We’ll see if this works.

Key question: What if Russia decides to bomb Division 30 at Assad’s behest?

Because we went through about 20 years of moderate snowing here in North Texas, our budget for dealing with snow is near nothing. It’s gotten us in trouble with the icing that has occurred the last few years. We had two storms earlier this year that were bad enough I couldn’t get out of my neighborhood because the city can’t afford to plow the residential streets.

Wait, Saladin was Kurd who controlled the this area in the past.

Why haven’t the Kurds taken up his legacy, and tried to rally people underneath it. Saladin, while Sunni, was known to be fair to minorities, and to be a just and generous man.

What a long fun day… even if the Texans lost it was a great game. Started my morning early straightening up since I had guests coming for breakfast and doggie play dates. Picked up all of Buddy’s toys and put them in his toy box. In the 3 minutes or so it took me to get dressed he pulled all his toys out again and planted them back on the sofa. I put them back in his toy box. We enjoyed breakfast out on the patio with the dogs running in and out like they do and when I came back in after those guests left I saw all of Buddy’s toys back on the sofa. Picked them all up and put them back in his toy box cuz my football watching guests were soon to arrive. By the time I finished the munchie prep for that his toys were back on the sofa. Put them in his toy box AGAIN but this time didn’t turn my back on the little shit so he couldn’t sneak them out. So what did he do? As my 3 guests arrived he gifted each one with a toy planted in their laps, sticking a couple more between the 2 guys on the sofa. Then he plopped himself in between them giving me an ” I dare ya!” look.

Damn, I love that little guy. He cracks me up.

They try, but many Arab groups aren’t eager to allay too closely with the Kurdish YPG. In part because YPG had to fire most of the company and above leadership in the Free Syrian Army units that joined the fight at Korbani. As with the Red Army before them, the Kurds are not well liked by Arab officers in Syria because they care more about combat effectiveness than political connections.

Not bad at all, but I do like this a wee bit better. Scary how well this song works as a folkish ballad…
