Ted Cruz Is Suddenly in Favor of Separation of Church and State?

I detect a distinct piscine odor
Politics • Views: 59,511

OK. It makes me really uneasy when Ted Cruz says something that isn’t crazy. What kind of diabolical game is he playing?

Cruz: Excluding Muslims From Presidency Is Unconstitutional.

“You know, the Constitution specifies there shall be no religious test for public office and I am a constitutionalist,” the Texas senator said during the taping of “Iowa Press” at Iowa Public Television.

Cruz was about Ben Carson’s televised statement that Islam is inconsistent with the U.S. Constitution. “I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that,” Carson said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

So he’s all right with a Muslim being president, huh? Don’t worry, though; he hasn’t given up on anti-Muslim bigotry entirely.

One area in which Cruz did not mind excluding Muslims, however, was from the ranks of refugees from Syria seeking asylum in the United States. He said they should settle in other Middle Eastern countries, citing concerns that some of the purported refugees may actually be terrorists.

“I think the Christians are a very different circumstance because Christians are being persecuted, they are being persecuted directly for their faith and the Obama administration has abandoned Middle East Christians,” Cruz said.

I wonder how Cruz squares his newfound support for the separation of church and state with what he told the American Family Association just last month?

“Nothing is more important in the next 18 months than that the body of Christ rise up and that Christians stand up, that pastors stand up and lead,” Cruz proclaimed. “In this last election, 54 million evangelical Christians stayed home … If we can simply bring Christians to the polls — is it any wonder we have the government we have, we have the leaders we have if believers stay home and leave electing our leaders to unbelievers. We get exactly what we deserve and nothing is more important that having people of faith stand up and just vote our values, vote biblical values and that’s how we turn the country around.”

Because that sounds an awful lot like a “religious test for public office.”

It’s crazy to me that this is a field of candidates in which this fucking asshole is not the most odious.

It’s possible that what Cruz is trying to say is that faith should inform citizens when they cast their votes, but that the Constitution nevertheless does not permit a religious test for office.

From that perspective its OK if voters refuse to vote for a candidate based on that candidate’s religion, but that same person cannot be excluded from running for that office.

There’s some problems in the way Cruz is likely to handle such a view, but it would represent one way to square his statements.

I still don’t support his campaign, to be clear.

Been watching this all develop over on FreeRepugnant, (it’s ok, I was planning on taking a shower before I went to bed). I’m a bit confused by what I read over there….

Strongly Held and Expressed Opinion 1: Muslims are not to be trusted because they want religious law to override the Constitution, and their first loyalty is to their religion, not the country.

Strongly Held and Expressed Opinion 2: Kim Davis is a hero and a true American, because she refused to follow the secular law, and held true to her religious beliefs, putting Gods Law above Mans Law.

With that much cognitive dissonance buzzing in their heads, how do they get anything done?

I know it’s been discussed here before, but did we ever decide where this 54 million figure comes from? Is that just every eligible voter who didn’t vote in the last election? And he assumes they’re all “Evangelical Christians”?

That worked one time—the surge that turned out for the first SSM scare in 2004. They’re a permanent part of your electorate, Ted—they don’t stay there as the base and yet somehow materialize afresh at each election.

On this note, can anyone tell me where Robert Reich’s friend is off target in his description of the modern Republican Party?

I got a call this morning from an old college friend who’s been a lifelong Republican (for years we’ve kidded one another about our respective politics), who told me he had decided to leave the GOP.
“It’s become the Party of hatemongers and know-nothings,” he said. “I’m embarrassed to be one of them.”
I asked him what had tipped him over the edge.
“Everything,” he said. “Their harangues against undocumented immigrants and promises to round them up and build a wall along the southern border. Their willingness to accept charges Obama is a Muslim and not born in America; that vaccines cause autism; that global warming is a hoax.”
“Yeah,” I said. “Pretty awful.”
“But that’s not all,” he said, becoming agitated. “It’s also their knee-jerk warmongering substituting for foreign policy. Their intolerance of a woman’s right to choose, and of gays’ and lesbians’ right to marry. Their willful suppression of black votes. Their racism!”
It was as if I’d opened a sluice gate. He went on, almost shouting: “Their incessant pandering to their wealthy funders by wanting even more tax cuts for the rich and big corporations, and then lying that the benefits will “trickle-down.” Their attacks on teachers. Cuts in school budgets. Eagerness to cut school lunches for poor kids…”
“Whoa,” I stopped him. “I get it. But these aren’t all new. Why did you stay a Republican all these years?”
He was silent for a moment. “Because I admired Mark Hatfield and Nelson Rockefeller and Jacob Javits,” he said. “I supported Barry Goldwater and John McCain. They reflected my values. I kept thinking my Republican Party would come back. But now I know it’s dead. The Party is now a sinkhole of ignorance and bigotry.”

I also tried it on my iPhone and it too did not work. I tried it the old way and now it works. I went back to check my links and now they work. Was that some sort of glitch in the system?

I would not vote for any of the Evangelicals currently running for President, at least in part because their ‘faith’ requires them to deny objective fact in favor of their fairy story.

Is that okay? Because if that’s okay, then not voting for or against anyone else based on their faith must be okay, too. It can’t be okay when you agree, but not okay when it’s your ox getting gored.

But your refusal to vote for them isn’t based on their religion per se. It’s based on their theocratic, far right wing policies. And their faith doesn’t really tell them to ignore reality…it’s the unholy alliance between their faith and theocrats on the right who have done so.

Jimmy Carter is an evangelical Christian, but I doubt you’d have a problem voting for him, since he didn’t push his religion as his guide to policy making. And there are some evangelicals among today’s Democrats in Congress, who similarly believe in a separation of church and state, the tearing down of which is the goal of the current crop of GOP evangelicals.

Yeah, Goldwater deserves a lot of the blame for the gop’s southern strategy. He only won 5 states outside his home of Arizona. All 5 were deep south states whose white voters responded to his states rights, anti-Civil Rights Act rhetoric. Basically, he tried it before Nixon and Reagan perfected it. Thanks, Barry.

Anyone who can be fairly labelled a “fundie” has already made the decision that governance should be based on their interpretation of some holy text. Thus, I would say that you’re voting against them because you prize the wall between church and state. Not because you dislike Christians, even those who are very devout.

Scientology is another matter. It’s a racketeering operation posing as a religion to avoid paying taxes.

Rocky-in-Connecticut  Sep 20, 2015 • 7:10:54pm

well, judging by Cruz’s loyal fanbase amongst a certain Republican cross-section I can tell the racism and bigotry is in full effect.

For example, I follow an old high school acquaintance on FB even though he is beyond full-on wingnut. He has been rabid in his promotion of just about every inane and insane anti-Obama meme the far right nutbase has dredged up. He has purposely posted several direct confrontational and directly hostile posts towards former “LIBERAL!!!” associates from his past like myself to quit following him or posting on his timeline. (I never have BTW, just follow like watching a train wreck) He had up to now held back any overt racist language but just tonight he decided to just let it all hang out and let his real racist freak flag fly using terms for Mexicans that racist people in the South use with casual abandon. It caught me off guard in its casual nature.

He also has been a big Ted Cruz fan even throughout the Trump onslaught. The last week however he had relented and started being friendlier towards a Trump ticket. I noticed a change in his views towards Trump in recent days from him based on his postings, and with it any inhibitions towards expressing his true nature in regards to people who do not have white skin. Very troubling and sad. This is what Ted Cruz, Trump, and pretty much the entire modern Republican field call a fanbase. Their racism and wish to isolate, or worse, rid themselves from 98% of the world’s inhabitants is real. And it is sick.

But Carter never pursued the destruction of the separation of church/state as his presidential goal. He never demonized one religion as being unfit to hold office. He never claimed to be chosen by God.

I’m an atheist. But I assume Carter was like most religious people: his experience as a Christian shaped some of his views, only naturally. But his religion was not a political cudgel used to marginalize others. Which is exactly what we’re seeing today in the GOP. Cruz, Carson, Huckabee, Santorum, et al. see America as a moral disaster which can only be saved by an overtly Christian soldier who will refashion our laws in Jesus’ image (or some other explicitly religious BS like that).

Religion will be Trump’s undoing in the primary. Mark my words.

It depends. I don’t think he’d be likely to win South Carolina, so he needs to win the other three early primaries then get through ‘Southern Tuesday’ in decent shape.

But the RNC did Trump a favor on that score as it mandated that the primaries that will be held on March 1st will allocate their delegates on proportional basis. That means Trump does not have win the largest number of states, just a large number of delegates.

Two of my bikes…. The long silver one is a Tour Easy Gold Rush Replica. That’s my main touring bike, and just a lot of fun to ride. The short one is a Rans Rocket, not the fastest thing in the stable, but great in crowds and just a kick to ride. Those are 20 inch BMX tires on wheels I built myself, Think they were the fusions. The GRR has Fusion wheels that I built. The rear hub on it is one of the old silent Shimano mountain hubs, the front is a Dyno hub driving a German LED light. Have to say that they have never given me any trouble.

My bike is bigger than a smart car…

I learned a trick a few years back. My biggest problem isn’t dehydration, because I drink a lot - 4x 24 oz bottles, 2 of cytomax, 2 of water. The biggest problem is heat buildup. So I periodically soak my head and back with water from the bottles. That works surprisingly well.

You get hammered because your argument is often sloppy, you don’t think your positions through and you favor ideology over rational thought.

That pisses people off. If you had quoted the strongest part of the analysis and shown how it had some validity, you’d get people responding to you, but you wouldn’t piss them off (now, you might rile them off, but in a good way—-bringing up strong points they hadn’t thought of).

The knee-jerk agreement because of ideology is a trait you strongly share with the others in the Republican party you profess to disdain.

OK, what exactly is he accusing here? Obama being careful with bombing to avoid civilian casualties? WH is directing foreign policy?

What?

Nah. Dark_Falcon was responding to Charles’s (correct) criticism of John Schindler - namely that he’s lost a ton of credibility as a National Security Analyst by being a creepy perv with a smartphone and an internet connection - and taking Schindler’s side because GO TEAM GO RAH RAH RAH!!

Yeah, remember when this DF guy used to be kinda thoughtful? That was a while back. He now lives in a fantasy land where there’s nothing wrong with the gop as long as they win elections. Because fuck actual governing, right?

Gore Vidal was right in so many ways.

From his “obituary” of William F. Buckley Jr.

The unique mess that our republic is in can be, in part, attributed to a corrupt press whose roots are in mendacious news (sic) magazines like Time and Newsweek, aided by tabloids that manufacture fictional stories about actual people. This mingling of opinion and fiction has undone a media never devoted to truth. Hence, the ease with which the Republican smear-machine goes into action when they realize that yet again the party’s permanent unpopularity with the American people will cause them defeat unless they smear individually those who question the junk that the media has put into so many heads. Anyone who says “We gotta fight ‘em over there or we’re gonna have to fight ‘em over here.” This absurdity has been pronounced by every Republican seeking high office. The habit of lying is now a national style that started with “news” magazines that was further developed by pathological liars that proved to be “good” Entertainment on TV. But a diet of poison that has done none of us any good.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned by lurking here for like 7+ years now.. its near impossible to convince DF that a Republican is on the wrong side of something. He might not always approve of their tactics.. and will throw out a half-hearted “yeah he shouldn’t have said it like that” - but speaking frankly, he rarely (if ever) takes issue with their platform positions, no matter how extreme.

re: #30 Blind Frog Belly White

My ride. I built this baby back in 2007, to distract me from the threat of layoffs as the company I worked for imploded. Columbus MAX steel frame from the early 1990s, their strongest tubeset for big, strong riders. Italian lugged construction, with pantographed for crown, brake bridge, and rear dropouts. Chrome plated chainstay. Had it painted Ferrari red. Built it up with the best components I could afford - Chris King headset, Phil Wood bottom bracket, Campagnolo Chorus kit. Custom wheels with White Industries hubs, Sapim spokes, and Velocity Fusion rims.

For the last 8 years, she’s my go-to bike. No flex in the bottom bracket when standing on it. Corners like she’s on rails. Descends like a falcon diving on prey.

Climbs like a 22# bike ridden by a 225#, 57 year old guy. Can’t have everything.

I named her DREADNOUGHT. Seemed appopriate for a battleship of a bike.

Image: DREADNOUGHT

Very nice. I haven’t been riding much lately. Need to change that.

Crescent (United States) (AFP) - The central US state of Oklahoma has gone from registering two earthquakes a year to nearly two a day and scientists point to a controversial culprit: wastewater injection wells used in fracking.

Located in the middle of the country, far from any major fault lines, Oklahoma experienced 585 earthquakes of a magnitude of 3.0 or greater in 2014. That’s more than three times as many as the 180 which hit California last year.

“It’s completely unprecedented,” said George Choy, a seismologist at the US Geological Survey.

The media is slowly bring forth stories on how looney Carson is, in his Adventist way:

Dr. Ben Carson - Evolution is Satan’s work? Not so fast.

[…]

In 2011, Carson gave a speech about “Creationism vs. Evolution.” Ironically he began the discussion talking about the frontal lobe of the human brain that allows human reasoning. He then later proved that the brain may allow reason, but certainly doesn’t guarantee it, as he then abandoned reason for madness.

“This whole creation evolution controversy has been raging on really from the beginning. Because what is Satan’s plan? To get rid of god. To disparage god. To mischaracterize god.” Seriously, this is what Dr. Carson said in the year 2011.

In this same speech he makes the claim that no transitional fossils have been found over the past 150 years and that Lucy was just a human with a deformed skull. A simple Google search could have cured the doctor’s staggering ignorance, but apparently any kind of research is “Satan’s plan.”

re: #25 palomino

But your refusal to vote for them isn’t based on their religion per se. It’s based on their theocratic, far right wing policies.

Which are a part and parcel of their religion.
There is nothing intrinsically wrong with refusing to vote for someone because of their religion. It only becomes wrong when this decision is also irrational, like in the case of “I won’t vote for any Muslim”. (In this case irrationality lies in several fallacies, like overgeneralization.) When the decision is rational (“I won’t vote for any fundamentalist Christian” or “a member of the Church of Scientology” or “a member of Aum Shinrikyo), it is warranted and is, arguably, even necessary.

(And no, not all evangelicals are fundamentalists.)

181
Nyet  Sep 20, 2015 • 10:39:02pm

PS: for pedantry’s sake: it is also bigoted to say “I won’t vote for any Scientologist”. Because there are Scientologists who are not associated with the CoS. They merely share the religious beliefs, and are hated by the Church. As such, nothing in their beliefs (which are no more absurd than Christian, Muslim or Jewish ones) disqualifies them from any office.

I don’t think I said all evangelicals were fundies. I was responding to someone who brought up fundamentalists after I had mentioned evangelicals, but I didn’t mean to conflate the two.

The overly broad “I won’t vote for any _______” mentality is what I was referring to, mainly since that’s the stated view of Ben Carson regarding Muslims. And he’s the guy who’s currently in second place, for whatever that’s worth.

New Madrid is well to the east of OK. It will raise hell the next time it slips if the quakes of 1811-1812 are any indication. I don’t know how much fracking their is within the New Madrid fault zone, but much misery will ensue if they do manage to wake it up. IIRC, only about half of the states that might be affected have earthquake building codes.
