Ben Carson Refuses to Back Down, Spouts Even Worse Anti-Muslim Bigotry

Overt bigotry at the highest level of the GOP
Politics • Views: 55,303

Ben Carson, in tried and true right wing fashion, isn’t backing down on his bigoted statements about Muslims. In fact, today he not only doubled down, he got even worse.

Carson explicitly advocated a religious test for public office, saying whoever is elected president should be “sworn in on a stack of Bibles, not a Koran.” And then he proceeded to recite one of the looniest of the loony right wing anti-Muslim memes — the idea that Muslims can never be trusted because they practice “taqqiyah,” or deliberate dishonesty to trick decent God-fearing American patriots like Ben Carson, so they can take over America by stealth jihad and put all our womenfolk in burqas. Sickening.

This is straight out of the Pamela Geller-Robert Spencer-Frank Gaffney axis of hate speech. Ben Carson’s apparently been reading the garbage propaganda circulated by the so-called “counter-jihad” nutcases.

Republican presidential hopeful Ben Carson is standing by his view that a Muslim should not be president of the United States, telling The Hill in an interview on Sunday that whoever takes the White House should be “sworn in on a stack of Bibles, not a Koran.”

[…]

In an interview with The Hill, Carson opened up about why he believes a Muslim would be unfit to serve as commander in chief.

“I do not believe Sharia is consistent with the Constitution of this country,” Carson said, referencing the Islamic law derived from the Koran and traditions of Islam. “Muslims feel that their religion is very much a part of your public life and what you do as a public official, and that’s inconsistent with our principles and our Constitution.”

Carson said that the only exception he’d make would be if the Muslim running for office “publicly rejected all the tenants of Sharia and lived a life consistent with that.”

“Then I wouldn’t have any problem,” he said.

However, on several occasions Carson mentioned “Taqiyya,” a practice in the Shia Islam denomination in which a Muslim can mislead nonbelievers about the nature of their faith to avoid religious persecution.

“Taqiyya is a component of Shia that allows, and even encourages you to lie to achieve your goals,” Carson said.

It’s just infuriating to see this discredited, blatantly bigoted nonsense being touted by a presidential candidate in 2015. America has a problem, all right — but it isn’t “Muslims,” it’s anti-Muslim hate speech.

As I mentioned in the thread below… two presidents were sworn in on law books, not bibles. And one of them “affirmed” rather than “swore.” But facts and history don’t matter to religious fundamentalists.

They don’t just want freedom. They want freedom from consequence. Nobody’s taking away their rights on any of those fronts. But for example on the ‘Southern’ thing, people are correctly pointing out that the CSA Battle Flag was the flag of people who went to war to preserve and expand the worst practice the United States ever undertook.

Carson is, of course, right that Sharia is incompatible with the Constitution. He just doesn’t know why he’s right, because he’s playing a “my god is bigger than yours!” game, rather than acknowledging how NO ancient theocratic laws fit in the framework of our government.

I would not vote for a fundamentalist Muslim for office. But neither would I vote for his Christian, Jewish, Hindu, whatever equivalent.

30
lawhawk  Sep 21, 2015 • 11:54:16am

Carson, like Trump and the rest of the GOP, have a very poor understanding of the Constitution.

Whether it is the affirmative duties - like Congress being required to provide for the nation’s general welfare (Art 1, Sec. 8, Cl. 1) or prohibitions - like preventing the use of a religious test for office (Article 6, Cl. 3) - the GOP seems to have struck out on the wrong side of the law and history.

Now, we can argue whether this is done out of ignorance or malice, but the result is the same - the GOP keeps moving further and further away from the Constitution.

For a party that loves to claim that they’re all about the Constitution, they sure do love skewering it daily.

Of course, there’s the significant problem where GOP candidates state all manner of falsehoods and the polls show them increasing their hold - rather than dropping - when challenged (if at all). It’s as though the lies and smears are endearing these candidates to the party, rather than repulsing the party.

It shows the rotten nature of the GOP.

Not at all, they just don’t accept Allah as God.

It’s up to the believers to choose their interpretation of God. Claiming that Allah is or is not objectively also the god of Judaism and Christianity is absurd, because who the God of the three religions is, is a subjective judgment.

I’d bet that those GOPers all understand the Constitution well enough to know that they need to change the way that it’s commonly understood. The First, Second, and Fourteenth Amendments, all straightforward in their own right, are being subject to novel interpretations that turn their clear intent upside-down. Just as their Republican predecessors never dreamed that a pack of loonies would seize control of their carefully built monster, so this lot fails to grasp that someone loonier than they are will eventually find them lacking and beat them with their own sticks.

It’s not a Theological question, because all Theological questions are null and void. Theology is a science without a subject. It’s strictly a historical question, and yes, it is transparently obvious that El, Elohim (Plural. Why?), Allah, are all the same god, called by the same name. The oddball is Yahweh, the Arabic-named Wind God, but he was subsumed as somehow being equivalent to the original El, Elohim after his priesthood eliminated the competition during the “Babylonian” “Captivity”, so that was long before Christianity and Islam threw up new prophets of the same God. Any of these Bible-Thumping Yahoos who say Allah is not the exact same God as the Elohim and Yahweh of Christianity and Judaism is an ignorant, suppurating pustule.

From your perspective as an atheist none of those exist at all, so they can’t be the same or not the same. There is no “there” there.

Exactly. I said Theological questions are null and void. But according to their respective prophets, they’re the same God. Jesus was quite clear that his “Father” was the God of Abraham. (He wasn’t aware of the Yahweh switcheroo.), and Muhammad was quite clear that his God was the same as that of Abraham and Jesus. Both are prophets of Islam.

I have occasionally emphasized to my kids that there’s a lot more to Christianity than the examples they see on TV or the Internet claiming their faith. There’s my Dad, whose faith made him a Pacifist even during WWII, so he did CPS for the duration. My brother who did the same during Vietnam. My other brother and his wife who put their asses on the line for their faith with Christian Peacekeepers, and others in my family who are all very religious, but celebrate diversity and oppose intolerance.

The Older Boy’s girlfriend has had little or no experience with that kind of Christian, so she has a more jaundiced view of Christians despite being raised by some than my kids have, being raised by athiests.

re: #94 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge

Exactly. I said Theological questions are null and void. But according to their respective prophets, they’re the same God.

It’s not that simple. Even if it were true, scriptures are interpreted and reinterpreted, sometimes the conclusions reached are 180 degrees opposite to what “the plain text” says. And the best part: everybody does it, and everybody has a right to do it. So an outsider like yourself telling them how to interpret their texts doesn’t really do the trick. If they want to accept this, it’s their right. If they want to re-interpret this, it’s also their right. There are no “rules”.

Jesus was quite clear that his “Father” was the God of Abraham.

Which, for starters, doesn’t oblige Jews to anything, right?

and Muhammad was quite clear that his God was the same as that of Abraham and Jesus. Both are prophets of Islam.

Which obliges neither Jews, nor Christians.

The reasons you cite are, indeed, used by many believers of the three faiths to assert the sameness of God.

On the other hand, the believers opposed to the notion of sameness will cite the many irreconcilable differences. As is also their right.

Since there are no objective rules that would establish the sameness or lack thereof, everybody is entitled to their views.

If a follower of some Eastern religion believes that, say, Jesus was an avatar of Vishnu, and is thus the same God - they’re entitled to it. And Christians and Muslims are just as entitled to reject this view.

No, you’re being deliberately obtuse. Theological interpretations is all sameness is about. Because it’s about what the believers think, not what you think.

It’s true that from a secular perspective the Abrahamic Gods are “a historically continuous development”. This has nothing whatsoever to do with the issue of sameness.

Nonsens. One can evaluate the texts objectively from outside the faiths in question..

Of course one can evaluate texts objectively. And that doesn’t bring you even a step closer to your preferred conclusion.

Your fallacy is that you equate “having common roots” with “being the same”.

What you can show from the texts is the historical development of these personages from a common root. Basta. Whether they’re “the same” God or not is up to the believer who actually believes in one of those Gods to decide.

Awwww, Scott Walker’s campaign may be coming to a rather abrupt end. Presser scheduled at 6pm, no topic given.

ok, gop, here’s the plan:

have a number of different foxnews backed challengers to trump rise and fall in the polls for the next few months while all the gop candidates concentrate on discrediting each other with cutting, sarcastic remarks and ads

then trump and an anti trump backed by the part of the gop that teabaggers hate and execrate fight it out to a split decision by convention time

then the anti trump is nominated and the baggers walk out in disgust and denial

He was in Desert Storm and she says he saw some really sick shit. She couldn’t tell me because she promised him she wouldn’t tell anyone. That said, I think it’s a really sad way to feel about any group of people. Maybe one day he’ll change his mind.

251
Nyet  Sep 21, 2015 • 1:39:39pm

I mean, I could go a simple route.
Christian God = Trinity (for most Christians).
Islamic and Judaic Gods are by no means Trinity, saying so is blasphemous. Ergo Islamic and Judaic Gods are not equivalent to the Christian one, despite the common roots.

But I won’t make the argument for one simple reason: an interpretation that “the God is the same but they just have a wrong way of viewing him” is also possible. Within the context of theological interpretations, of course. When one accepts that (a) God exists.

If we’re talking about an “objective analysis of the text” (which disregards theology), then such an approach is not possible, and the argument would stand, not as a way of proving non-sameness, but rather as demonstrating that arguing about sameness or non-sameness is pointless in the “objective analysis” mode. It would depend strictly on the arbitrarily chosen criteria of sameness. If we choose the historical criteria, we reach one conclusion, if we look at the actual “content” of a chosen God, we reach the opposite conclusions, and so on.

Wow…going fast to try to catch up…

Chuck Todd weighs in on Scotty Walker pulling the plug. (Sorry if already posted, like I said the posts are coming fast…)

NBC News - Scott Walker Set to Exit GOP Presidential Race

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is set to drop out of the presidential race Monday night, a source close to the campaign confirms to NBC News.

He is scheduled to hold a press conference in Madison, Wisconsin, at 6pm ET to announce his exit from the race.

The Republican was once considered a frontrunner for the GOP nomination, topping polls in Iowa and winning accolades from conservatives for his fights against labor unions during his tenure as governor of the state.

But a series of missteps — and the rise of unconventional candidates like Donald Trump and Dr. Ben Carson — found him plummeting in national and key early state polls.

No, but between his terrible budget decisions, blatant corruption, and this hilarious Presidential campaign, his approval rating here is below 40%. And I doubt it will rise after embarrassing himself on the national stage.

It looks like he used parts from an existing digital clock as the main part, but that doesn’t take a bit away from what he did. I’ve built many things over the years where I took existing pieces and reused them.

Of course the right sees it a bit different…
The little terrorist built a detonator, hid it inside a box, and brought it to school as a dry run for a bomb. Not surprising considering that his father is a radical Muslim activist

In case anyone hasn’t noticed, generic drug manufacturers have been on a yoooge acquisition binge as of late.

Where things get dicey is like this drug that the douche nozzle picked up for on the cheap and seeing no other manufacturers and its limited sales, basically the drug goes the way of becoming an ‘orphan drug’-limited market, usually off-patent meds, and insane pricing.

My concern is that assholes like this guy will end up fucking up the whole biomedical research industry. This shit costs a lot of money, and to get people to work as hard as they do, they have to expect a pretty good reward. But it has to be sane. Blatant gouging may lead to excessive controls, which might discourage innovation.

The market already discourages innovation when it comes to curing illness. Investors want life long treatments…not cures.

So now, we just need the Wisconsin Democrats to actually put forward a good candidate and an effective campaign

This is why Walker won the last three elections (well, with help from the Waukesha County Clerk “finding” uncounted ballots). But it’d never be close enough except for DPW’s arrogance and incompetence.

No, but between his terrible budget decisions, blatant corruption, and this hilarious Presidential campaign, his approval rating here is below 40%. And I doubt it will rise after embarrassing himself on the national stage.

So now, we just need the Wisconsin Democrats to actually put forward a good candidate and an effective campaign….errrrr…..well in that case, I guess we should just get ready for Scott Walker, Governor-for-Life.

I agree. I think I posted the other night that if he closes up shop for the election early he will be seen as a loser in Wisconsin. The fact he couldn’t sell his brand of union busting, social program chopping, etc. to this Republican base will make the people in Wisconsin rethink what they saw in Scooter and there will be some embarrassment they voted for him.

I hope Wisconsin bounces back and becomes a blue state for next November.

Samberg went on to say that he’s not particularly interested in following celebrity chef Paula Deen’s progress on Dancing With the Stars.

“If I wanted to see an intolerant lady dance, I would’ve gone to one of Kim Davis’ four weddings,” he said.

The least that they can do for us is to have Walker take the stage in the next debate and then be dropped through a trap door just before they introduce him.

Hahaha. How about they make a little memorial altar on the side of the debate stage with gold framed photographs of Perry and Walker (and whoever by the next debate) with a US flag, a wreath of red red roses and white carnations and roped in with red velvet with polished brass stands and hardware.

Some Freepers are have a sad about Walker quitting. Others are more delusional than usual:

Wow! I really thought he would hold on through Iowa. His internals must be awful!

Literally… has the best resume of the bunch outside of Cruz.

I would say his votes will shift to more of the better candidates.

Can’t blame him at this point. Accomplishment alone doesn’t get it done anymore. Voters like charisma.

It makes me sad that he wasn’t ready for the big stage.
He accomplished more to rein in out of control big government than just about anyone in America, and he did it in the birthplace of the communist movement in America of all places.

Walker and most of the other GOP candidates need to learn from Trump - grow a pair and boldly speak for and defend the conservative views that your constituents believe in. Spend your time trying to appease the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the GOP establishment, and lose.

Trump and Carson killed the poor fellow. He had an impressive resume but for some reason went squish as a POTUS candidate.

Tragic. Especially with all the eGOP scattering candidates in the race, designed to help Bush win pluralities (where he can’t win majorities) in Winner-Take-All primary contests.
If Walker is pulling out because of his poll numbers, then why are Gilmore, Graham, etc., in the race at all?

I like him, but he was about as exciting as plain cooked pasta.

Secretary of Labor in the Cruz administration would be a good spot for Walker. :-)

This is what happens when you get weak-kneed.

Had he been stronger on the illegal invasion, and more forceful overall he wouldn’t be an also-ran.

I liked Walker’s resume’ but wouldn’t vote for him because he was vacillating, and wouldn’t come down hard on the crimmigrant aliens.

So, I bid him adieu, and wish him well in his job as governor.

Next to go should be Pataki, Jindal, Santorum, and Huckabee.
