Spanish flamenco with just a hint of ragtime in there somewhere. Not what I expected. Noticing also how this was shot sepia and high key exposure. Eclectic look.

After 11 years in the garage, my 81 Yamaha single is running, legal, and on the road. It is a shock to find how much you can lose in skills and strength in that time.

Nice. Any pics?

Since I am Mr. Risk Reducer I have to ask, are you going out on the street or just puttering around the yard? :) Returning riders are disproportionately represented in injury statistics. Rustiness is no joke and it’s a good idea to take a rider skills class if you’re coming back to it after years.

“Back up and running” is a great feeling. My old Ducati project is proceeding at the speed of paycheck and it’s going to be 2-3 months before she’s rolling again.

(I wish those big-donor idiots would take a break from dumping millions on loser Republicans to cut me a check for about $1,500 so I can get it done NOW before the late-October nice-riding-season arrives.)

I swear that Tommy met a smokey figure at a crossroads late one night. To play like that, and to obviously have that much fun doing it, something’s just not legit. :) I can barely walk a straight line, and he’s playing like a madman and clowning around while doing it.

I saw him in concert in Nashville, and it was the most fun show I’ve been to in a long time.

I sort of remember that bike, was that a 600 single? I had an old Honda CB-500T (Twin) back in the day, and the Yamaha single was also one I was looking at.

And my best advice, put your pride in your hip pocket, and take a Motorcycle riders course. They have some tailored for riders getting back in after being out a while. We love ya, and want to keep you healthy here.

Will look into uploading some cellphone pictures.

I’m super-cautious—have the Army version of MSF, the earlier MOST, and the National Safety Council motorcycle DDC. (10% insurance discount for all that.) I’ll spend a month riding around the neighbourhood before I take it up to highway speeds. That’s to check out me and the bike’s 35 year old components.

My first bike was almost a Ducati. The guy who was bringing it to me got creamed by a little old lady. Our MSF instructor in Italy ran a beautiful 906 Desmo.

Nice looking bike. I’m not a rider, but my son is. To celebrate his new job, he bought a slightly used Triumph for about $7K. One of his former IT jobs was with Twisted Throttle — maybe some of you riders have heard of them. Two of his former TT colleagues also moved out to Colorado last year, to work at a dealership in Fort Collins. They set him up with this new-ish Triumph.

Looks like my Meinere’s is hanging around for a while. Back on a course of oral steroids for the next six days, then a recheck in 4-6 weeks. I told the ENT that a labrynthectomy was off the table as I still have hearing in that ear-at worst maybe one low-dose gentamicin injection and that’s only if the vertigo kept coming back.

As a joke. maybe I should take a short vacation to Tokyo to see if the 14-hour flight might compress my endolymphatic sac there and back. Always wanted to visti the land of anime and Akihabara.

Remember now. That makes great sense.

One of several urban legends about Rolls-Royce is that the 7 liter V-8 introduced in the mid-50s was originally a GM design. This probably originates from the transmission, which is indisputably a GM design, originally the 4 speed hydramatic, with the more modern 3 speed turbo-hydromatic being introduced on the Silver Shadow. The engine itself is in fact an in house RR design and shares many minor design features with the Merlin and Griffon aircraft engines, though obviously on a much smaller scale. A Buick Riviera transmission of the same vintage is a drop-in for my car.

Also, Mike Huckabee would write a seven-chapter account of fucking a platypus if you convinced him it would tick his earning potential amongst the sky pilots slightly upward.

As if il Papa could tell by looking at them who was gay or trans. Besides, he probably wouldn’t care one way or another.

Best fb comment on abortion I’ve seen yet.

I don’t care if Planned Parenthood provides nothing BUT abortion services. I don’t care if it’s a million-story abortion superpark with abortion waterslides and an abortion electrical parade. Abortion is legal. ABORTION IS LEGAL. If I read one more “defense” of Planned Parenthood that says “it’s not JUST abortions!” or “only 5% of what they do is abortion! And abortions aren’t federally funded!” I’m going to abort myself. Abortion is legal, culturally necessary, and good for humanity. It has been and will be practiced for millennia. It is essential. It is a fact. By minimizing, denying or apologizing for this fact, you are allowing these venal anti-woman Nazis to frame this debate and continue to chip away at this essential right. Abortion is not tragic. It is not painful. It is a fact. It is a right. Demand it, fight for it, and for the sake of the women who have given their lives to defend it, stop apologizing for it.

This, despite Kentucky’s remarkable success rate in implementing the ACA. Of course, they rebranded it “Kynect,” to distance it from the Evil Oppressor. Democrats in most parts of KY are really just like Republicans — very church-oriented, conservative and still not too sure about this equality among the races thing. They remain Democrats because of family tradition, I suppose. Kim Davis is a Democrat, for example.

The meme that Democrats = liberals and Republicans = conservatives does not work for KY. Doubtless, it’s true for a lot of the Southeast.

I disagree. I don’t think the death of the artist should affect the ownership of the art, just like any asset. I think modeling copyright on patent protections would have merit, in the respect that there would be a specific “lifespan” on the copyright.

Why does a copyright have to run out during the artist (or the copyright owner’s) lifetime? Anybody is entitled to sing the song in the shower, but if you want to sell tickets to see somebody perform the song, the writer is entitled to a share of the income. Why should a performer get free content? The key is that the performance is a paid performance. Intellectual property rights have been taking a beating from older things like Napster, and now youtube and as always, free downloads.

We’re talking about an asset. The copyright is protecting intellectual property. It seems as if the people who want to profit from the art (song, book, whatever), want a free ride by making the copyright expire. If I want to make money by selling tickets to a concert of Cole Porter songs, why should I get the content for free? If I make money, the holders of the rights should make money.

re: #125 freetoken

The living and the dead are irrelevant for the purposes of this. If I invent something I can sell the patent rights, and then it doesn’t matter whether I am alive or dead. If I don’t sell the patent (or copyright), I can leave the ownership of those rights to my heirs or other designee. On that basis, it doesn’t matter whether the writer is alive or dead. The whole discussion of when copyright protections cease are about when somebody gets something they want to sell for free.

As a content creator (writing, photos & now even composing original songs) I believe that only the creator of the work, unless explicitly transferred to someone else, should have those rights and only for a limited term. I seem to be doing my best work at night these days. Interestingly enough, I had the concept in my mind driving home from work, but it ties in somewhat to what we’ve been discussing. Enjoy.

THE MUSIC OF LIFE

Play a little tune for me, pluck those strings so sweet,
take me to another place, ensconce me with your beat.

Give me a crescendo that’s the best I’ve ever heard,
or perhaps a little solo riff, who’s got time for words?

A few brief chords of magic are all you really need,
as the sweet song comes together and the melodies run free.

So maybe it’s a ballad or some old country number,
Soft as a folded bed sheet, or rough as rolling thunder.

Don’t worry about the orchestra, it’s just a solo act.
One man and a guitar will do the job, I tell you that’s a fact.

The hall is full of people, the crowd has come to listen,
to this impresario, the guitar man on a mission.

The place it may be smoky and rather dimly lit,
but that’s just fine with the musician, he always plays with grit.

It’s just one quaint performance on one of many stages,
but you never know this may just be a show for all the ages.

And when it’s time to wrap it up, late into the night,
he’ll give ‘em one last encore and be sure to end it right.

In a way I have reconsidered my original argument for a time limited copyright. I’m not saying you can’t sell tickets to “A Night with John Phillip Sousa” (rock on dude), I’m saying that you owe the owner of the rights something. Just because the guy kicked the bucket or wrote the music more than X number of years ago, I don’t think that entitles anybody to “free” music.

Copyrights and patents are a compromise between free knowledge and the need to pay for doing to the work. The works don’t exist in a vaccuum, though. Our society, system of government, and economy directly or indirectly contributed to the ability to produce the work. Therefore, there should be a limit.

Copyrights have gotten way out of hand, mainly to keep a few high profile things out of the public domain. Since there are very few mind-blowing original works, but lots of derivatives, long copyrights are actually hurting innovation. 1984 ought to be subject to the same treatment that Pride and Prejudice received from Pride and Prejudice and Zombies .

Hopefully China’s president is being told this while he’s visiting tech people in Seattle and Tacoma. He needs to be warned about the limits of central decision making, not because we want to crow about “We’re better!”, but instead because this sort of plan is unwise, impractical, and unlikely to work.

According to the article, the government hopes to lure Windows XP users away from MS products, because XP is the most common OS in China and MS no longer supports it. However, my suspicious nature leads me to think the government wants to use the Linux OS to monitor users and restrict their access to the Net.

Anyway, most users will probably just install a pirated version of Windows anyway.

Concussions are the most common type of brain injury, and about 85 percent of people who suffer one will more or less fully recover within a year. But for those who do not, lingering symptoms, such as headaches or increased irritability, can get in the way of everyday functioning.

Yesterday while I was walking home, I approached an intersection at which 9 out of ten drivers run the stop sign (and crosswalk) without stopping. This is next to an elementary school. As one of those 9-out-of-ten pulled through, I called the driver an asshole. She stopped and put her big, shiny SUV in reverse, and we started yelling at each other until a cop came around the corner with his flashers on. I holstered my (unused) pepper spray and continued my journey, listening to the woman yelling at the cop. A few blocks later, the cop approached me to ask what happened and see if I was OK. He laughed when I told him it’s a good thing I no longer walk with a stick because I would have left marks on that SUV.

I have to strategize dealing with my temper.

About 8.5 percent of U.S. non-incarcerated adults have a history of TBI, and about 2 percent of the greater population is currently suffering from some sort of disability because of their injury.

In prisons, however, approximately 60 percent of adults have had at least one TBI—and even higher prevalence has been reported in some systems.

Makes sense to me.

#168 SteveMcGaziBolaGate:

Patents and copyrights aren’t restricting access to an item, they are restricting access to an idea. Selling rubber balls means you have to compensate for the cost of production. If I wanted to sell rubber balls, then I would also have to compensate for the cost of production.

If there were no such thing as copyrights, you could print copies of a book I wrote, and only have to cover production costs. But that doesn’t give me much of an incentive to spend the effort to write the book, so copyrights restrict the ability for others to access my works until the copyright goes out. (I’m sure you know this, but you seem to be confusing cost of production with the product).

I’m not, and I don’t think others are, arguing that we should be able to just take someones idea right after they create it. But ideas are that, and an idea does not cost anything to replicate. We should be encouraging the sharing of ideas, and innovation from those ideas. Copyrights and patents are meant to be a compromise between the efforst to create ideas (everyone needs to eat) and the need to have them be available to everyone to build on. So there needs to be a limit, and right now, copyrights are too long.

I love ideas, but the term “intellectual property” is a red herring. You can’t own an idea. The best you can do is restrict access for a while, and that’s only with the right laws and enforcement set up.

What the heck? “Patents and copyrights aren’t restricting access to an item, they are restricting access to an idea”
They make sure the inventor/creator gets paid to use the idea she/he developed.

“so copyrights restrict the ability for others to access my works until the copyright goes out. (I’m sure you know this, but you seem to be confusing cost of production with the product)”
No, people can access your work. They just have to compensate you if they’re doing it to make money. Example, my daughter’s school has to reimburse Disney around 3500 bucks one year when they did “Alice in Wonderland”. Seems like a dickish thing for DIsney to do, but:1. They would have had to pay for the rights to just about any play they did, 2. They sold tickets and raised money for the school by doing this, IOW, they made money off of the play. They had no problems “accessing” it.

“You can’t own an idea. “
I don’t argue that anybody owns an idea. I’ve been pretty specific about that. Don’t put words in my mouth that I didn’t say. The copyright holder owns the commercial rights to that idea. If you want to use it to make money, pay her/him for it. If you don’t want to pay, write your own play.
** A quick story that I think is funny: In 1975 I wrote a song that sounds EXACTLY like Coldplay’s “Clocks”. I was in 5th grade and I was fooling around with my mother’s piano (which I didn’t know how to play) and tried to come up with a song that didn’t already sound like something I heard on the radio all the time (I can’t imagine how hard it is today to write a song that doesn’t walk on another song that was already written). Anyway, my version of clock was about how mean Miss Condron was when I had her in 4th grade and how hot Mrs. Boyle (my 5th grade teacher) was. Never went any farther than that because I figured any song I wrote was probably junk.
I could have been a one hit wonder!!

Serbia has given Croatia an ultimatum to reopen its border for all cargo transport by midnight, or face unspecified countermeasures.

Croatia shut all but one of its crossings with Serbia last week to block the migrant surge, which has reached 44,000 in a week. Croatia is angry that Serbia is busing migrants to its border, rather than sending them north to Hungary.

Croatia’s action has crippled the economy in Serbia, a conduit for cargo across Croatia to western and central Europe.

[…]

Turkey has begun enforcing long-dormant rules on Syrians’ travel within the country, in part over concerns about how the flow is affecting the country’s image.

According to a government document obtained by The Associated Press and interviews with officials and migrants, the moves so far appear to be ad hoc and aimed only at preventing migrants from reaching the Turkish frontier city of Edirne, where hundreds are staging a sit-in near the Greek border.

[…]

Slovakia’s prime minister says his country is challenging a European Union decision to redistribute 120,000 asylum seekers.

Besides the legal complaint at an EU court in Luxembourg, Robert Fico says his country is not ready to accept the plan to share the burden of migrants across the EU.

[…]

And much more I did not quote.

I have no idea how the current Syria crisis will end. The pessimist part of me says “not well.”

The Black Panther Party first publicized its original Ten-Point program on May 15, 1967, following the Sacramento action, in the second issue of the Black Panther newspaper.[41] The original ten points of “What We Want Now!” follow:
We want freedom. We want power to determine the destiny of our Black Community.
We want full employment for our people.
We want an end to the robbery by the Capitalists of our Black Community.
We want decent housing, fit for shelter of human beings.
We want education for our people that exposes the true nature of this decadent American society. We want education that teaches us our true history and our role in the present day society.
We want all Black men to be exempt from military service.
We want an immediate end to POLICE BRUTALITY and MURDER of Black people.
We want freedom for all Black men held in federal, state, county and city prisons and jails.
We want all Black people when brought to trial to be tried in court by a jury of their peer group or people from their Black Communities, as defined by the Constitution of the United States.
We want land, bread, housing, education, clothing, justice and peace.

Measuring assimilation

Immigrants today are integrating into U.S. society as fast or faster than those of previous generations, according to a study released Monday, with male immigrants holding down jobs at higher rates and committing fewer crimes than native-born Americans.

The study, by an expert committee led by Harvard sociologist Mary Waters for the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, provides a counterpoint to some claims in the national debate on immigration. It illuminates how immigrants fare after arriving in the United States, which is important, Waters said, given that one in four Americans today is either an immigrant or a child of one.

Not for the Trumpiots:

Report Finds Immigrants Come to Resemble Native-Born Americans Over Time, But Integration Not Always Linked to Greater Well-Being for Immigrants

As immigrants and their descendants become integrated into U.S. society, many aspects of their lives improve, including measurable outcomes such as educational attainment, occupational distribution, income, and language ability, but their well-being declines in the areas of health, crime, and family patterns, says a new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. At the same time, several factors impede immigrants’ integration into society, such as their legal status, racial disparities in socio-economic outcomes, and low naturalization rates.

“Integration is a twofold process that depends on the participation of immigrants and their descendants in major social institutions such as schools and the labor market, as well as their social acceptance by other Americans,” said Mary Waters, M.E. Zukerman Professor of Sociology at Harvard University and chair of the committee that conducted the study and wrote the report. “The U.S. has a long history of accepting people from across the globe, and successful integration of immigrants and their children contributes to our economic vitality and a vibrant, ever-changing culture.” There are 41 million immigrants and 37.1 million U.S.-born children of immigrants in the United States today. Together, the first and second generations account for one-quarter of the U.S. population.

In comparison with native-born Americans, the report says, immigrants are less likely to die from cardiovascular disease and all cancers, and they experience fewer chronic health conditions, have lower infant mortality and obesity rates, and have a longer life expectancy. However, over time and generations, these advantages decline as their health status converges with that of the native-born population.

Other measures of individual and community well-being show the same pattern, the committee found. Neighborhoods with greater concentrations of immigrants have much lower rates of crime and violence than comparable nonimmigrant neighborhoods. Foreign-born men age 18-39 are incarcerated at one-fourth the rate of native-born American men of the same age. However, in the second and third generations, crime rates increase and resemble that of the general population of native-born Americans.

Similarly, immigrant divorce rates and out-of-wedlock birth rates start off much lower than native-born Americans, but over time and generations, they rise toward those for native-born families. This indicates that immigrant and second-generation children across all major ethnic and racial groups are more likely to live in families with two parents than are third-generation children. Because single-parent families are more likely to be impoverished, this is a disadvantage going forward, the report says.

Asian pop requires either a horde of cute teenage or 20-something girls dancing stock moves and singing some forgettable tune, or androgynous boy bands doing the same thing. That’s where the money is.

There are solo acts that are musically pretty good, aimed at older consumers. So, the music is generally MOR soft pop. Jay Chou (Canto-pop star) has worked in some R&B into his music, though.

Chou played Kato in that Seth Rogan travesty of a movie, BTW.

White Jogger to White Stroller-Pusher: People Like You Live in Brooklyn Because I “Settled” It

In a video purportedly filmed earlier this week in downtown Brooklyn, a white jogger—who may or may not fight for a living and may or may not be able to kill you with one punch—can be seen screaming at a white man pushing a stroller: “The only reason white people like you live here is because I settled this fucking neighborhood for you!”

[…]

“Don’t fucking come at me,” the jogger warns the stroller-pusher near the video’s start. “I’ll kill you with one punch. You’re messing with the wrong guy. I fight for a living.”

Nothing says “white privilege” by berating and physically assaulting another white person, in front of a black police officer, and nothing happens to the asshole.

Some dillweed on Redstate was referring to Jesus as a “capitalist carpenter” earlier.

He probably fleeced widows for shoddy work that wasn’t up to code and declared a couple of building outfits bankrupt to avoid paying his creditors. Where do you think he got the cash for the loaves and fishes?

282
Belafon  Sep 23, 2015 • 8:56:49am

#277 Iwouldprefernotto: There’s a fairly good argument that Jesus was middle class, especially if he was given the gifts at his birth. But even without those, the fact that he was able to run around, teaching and prophesying mean he had some money. Think of the movement leaders now, like, for instance, bin Laden. Not exactly poor. I don’t think Jesus was too worried about eating.

And if he can turn water to wine and make food on demand, he really doesn’t qualify as poor.

I haven’t checked on Free Republic in a while. Even with my service in Vietnam, Somalia, and Iraq, and raising two girls, and living in Lubbock for years, I was still just not tough enough to deal with it every day.
I am back in shape though and have re-entered that hive of scum and villainy as a public service, so the human race may know what they are up to without having to wade in themselves.

Some choice droppings from the megatons of newly posted derp:

Refugee Armageddon in Europe:

A word of caution to the European Nations considering taking in millions of “refugees.” Many of these people are keenly aware of how and why ISIS was successful.

One day in the not too distant future, hundreds of thousands of “refugees” will catch the militarys of Europe flat footed and overrun many of their bases. They will seize the weapons, and quickly gain control of large regions of Europe, and the militaries will be hard pressed to regain control. Meanwhile all police officers and political and civil service people will be slaughtered, and the slaughter of non Muslims will be something akin to what the Nazis did to the Jews. Even worse, if that is possible, the Muslims might seize control of nuclear weapons, and then katy bar the door.

Advice for Catholics:

I’m not catholic but your pope needs to be impeached or whatever you do to get rid of him, I think it’s usually murder. He needs to stay out of politics and do his catholic thing.

A Kochhead weighs in too:

The Pope is pushing the Global Warming Hoax.

This means:

1) The Pope is abusing his office, because the temperature of the earth is not part of the Catholic Faith;

2) The Pope is a LIAR, because Global Warming is not happening. (The Pope has a DUTY not to believe hoaxes, so he has no right to plead [sometime in the future] that he was deceived.)

Catholics, for the good of the Church, have the duty to do all they can to make everyone aware that this Pope is an abuser of his office and his fame, and is a liar.

I am back in shape though and have re-entered that hive of scum and villainy as a public service, so the human race may know what they are up to without having to wade in themselves.

When I saw that image up thread that is what I was thinking. But is that not troubling? CNN is supposed to be a professional* media company. What, can’t they afford people that have degrees in college and have some feel for history? Or, is it another indictment of our education systems? Most likely a bit of both.

I’ve tried just about everything. Right now it is stable. Not sure why. I get times when everything is ok and I can use the site, like right now, then it will slow way down.

And really, why should I have to disable Flash for here, when I do not have these issues at other sites just as intense in content?

I just hope that something Charles is doing is a bit ahead of the browsers and that it will all catch up.

I wish I could afford to turn off the ads, but truthfully I can’t at this time. So…we trudge on. Or not.

I feel your pain. I just installed the adblock extension on my Chrome browser and noticed an immediate improvement. I hesitated to do this but eventually chose to for several reasons:

1) I, like you, want my favourite site to be usable on this PC
2) I frequently visit on my ipad and smartphones which have no problem handling the ads
3) I’m planning to donate to the LGF gofundme in the not too distant future
4) I can turn off the block if I want to

For those with Chrome…I came upon this Google page the other day trying to figure out what is going on.

Plugin-based content doesn’t work on Chrome

Why NPAPI plugins don’t work now

In the past, many plugins were developed using an old system called NPAPI. Today fewer sites are using NPAPI plugins and they have often caused security risks on websites.

To make browsing with Chrome safer, faster, and more stable, we stopped allowing NPAPI plugins on September 1, 2015.

Plugins that use NPAPI, including Silverlight, Java, and Unity, won’t work. If you want to use a website that uses an NPAPI plugin, you’ll need to use a different web browser.
PPAPI plugins still work

Plugins that use a newer, more secure system called Pepper API (PPAPI) still work. That includes plugins that come with Chrome, like Adobe Flash. PPAPI plugins that come with Chrome update when Chrome does, so there’s no need to install anything extra.

I note too, this morning when I launched Firefox there was a new upgrade loaded. I wonder if they too are going the same direction as Google with Chrome and that is why Firefox was being such a pain this morning.

Everytime I hear about the 19 hijackers I think of the 20th hijacker who was arrested in MN for overstaying his visa while paying cash to a flight school to learn how to fly a large aircraft, but not caring to learn how to land it. His instructors and the local FBI agents had him nailed a month before 9/11, but they couldn’t get permission from HQ to search his computer, which had a ton of info about the hijacking plans. Migrants and Refugees Leave Lesvos Island As Thousands More Arrive

[…]

In the past day, the port of Piraeus has been the scene of yet another major wave of migrant and refugee arrivals. Five thousand people who were transported from the Greek islands, disembarked at Greece’s biggest port between Tuesday and Wednesday.

The “Eleftherios Venizelos” passenger ship had transported 2,477 of those from Lesvos on Wednesday morning. Two other ferries transported the remaining migrants and refugees, also from Lesvos, with 1,300 arriving with the “Ariadne” ship on Wednesday and 1,922 with the Blue Star Ferry Patmos on Tuesday, according to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency.

Despite this seemingly large exodus from the island, Lesvos had another massive influx on Wednesday morning with approximately 2,500 migrants and refugees arriving at the island, according to Greek media reports.

Last week around 30,000 migrants and refugees had been transported from Lesvos to mainland Greece.

Regarding Ann Coulter and her Catholic rage. I do believe there were a couple Catholics that were part of the delegation at the Constitutional Convention.

And she should also look into how “christian” the main group of forefathers were really not. Most of them were thinkers and as such were more deists than any formal religion.

Fundies have distorted the history of Christianity, the world and the U.S. What good are they? They seem sometimes to be what will really bring this country down. Imagine that…do-gooders doing bad.

Hey, it’s just luck he didn’t say, “What’s his name, Juan Valdez?”

Trump would have said “Speedy Gonzalez”.

It most likely won’t happen, but it would be wonderful if the Pope’s upcoming speech to Congress would include a serious dig or two at the prosperity gospel in it.

I could see him dropping Matthew 6:24 like a verbal hammer.

“You cannot serve both God and Money.”

If what is meant by his “domain” is that he can speak with authority… Well, that’s different, but doesn’t change my point.

The Pope can speak with authority on what his version of Christianity thinks of anything, including economics.

You can speak of two kinds of authority. One is the notional authority that is tied to his position among believers. A more crude definition is the degree to which his statements induce behavior in his listeners. In that sense he has fairly little authority when preaching on things like contraception to American Catholics.

But only Buddah pays dividends.

(back in the past, the old joke used to be “Jesus saves at (insert your local bank)”-usually written over urinals.)

As a rule, a Pope is an authority on Catholicism. An expert. In that sense.

Ah, “academic” authority, yet a third kind.
