Senate Democrats Reject GOP Scheme to Defund Planned Parenthood

We wouldn’t want anything to happen to this nice little government you’ve got here
Politics • Views: 47,616

To no one’s surprise, today Senate Democrats blocked the latest Republican spending bill that would have defunded Planned Parenthood, just as they promised.

But get a load of how The Hill describes this:

The Senate on Thursday rejected a short-term spending bill that would defund Planned Parenthood, thwarting the opening move by Republican leaders to avoid a government shutdown on Oct. 1.

Uh, wait just a minute here. This was a move by Republicans to avoid a government shutdown? Who are they kidding? That’s ridiculous. It’s the Republican Party that’s threatening to shut down the government over Planned Parenthood, not the Democrats.

This is extortion, pure and simple. The Republicans are essentially saying that unless Democrats do as they want and help the GOP destroy Planned Parenthood — based on dishonest edited and distorted videos produced by right wing religious fanatics — they’re going to hold the government itself hostage. It’s outrageous, it really is.

And McConnell issued the following sleazy statement, just to drive this point all the way home.

After the vote, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) filed a new short-term spending bill that would fund the government and Planned Parenthood.

“I regret the Democratic leadership determined a crisis would be necessary to advance a policy aim of growing the government and that our colleagues decided accordingly to block every single funding bill,” McConnell said. “We’ve been forced to pursue a continuing resolution as a result.”

It’s really disappointing to see media outlets like The Hill falling for the GOP’s blatantly deceptive way of framing this crazy effort to blame the Democratic Party.

I believe that the GOP also demanded that the defense budget be increased by $13 billion or so, so not only do the Democrats support killing babbies, but they also hate the military.

how dare the Democrats put the health and welfare of poor women ahead of those brave men and women who are serving overseas! Why we need more poor women giving birth because that’s our cannon fodder (ahem, recruiting pool) is drawn from for the next group of non-white xtians that we have to invade.

You can laugh, but that’s why they made abortion illegal for the first time in the early 20th century—it was robbing the State of cannon fodder. Most wingnuts seem unaware of that.

One very important thing to remember too is:

ABORTION IS LEGAL IN THE UNITED STATES

I don’t care if all that Planned Parenthood did was abortions, abortion is legal in the United States.

If there is proof of a felony against some people for breaking laws regarding the selling of body parts then bring criminal charges or go fish.

Screw those guys.

AGAIN……

They’ve been trying to restore the def budget even since they agreed to it even though we’re doing our damndest to roll back our involvement everywhere….

guess they’re trying to ensure some awesome golden parachutes when the gravy train ends as they lobby for the defense industry.

Defunding PP will only impact poor and women working their butts off at less than a living wage.
Abortion will still be legal in this country, but the only women who will have access to it are those who can pay for the full freight.
Like the head cheerleader at my high school (and her parents were pillars of the community) who went to visit her auntie over summer vacation…

The generation of women who don’t remember the time before Roe v Wade are going to have to re-fight the battle for access, and for full legality as the “20-week bans” get implemented. We’ve lost so much ground.

“…Permanently defunding Planned Parenthood would cost the government $130 million over the next decade, according to the Congressional Budget Office. A one-year defunding measure would likely come at the cost of more unwanted pregnancies and reduced access to health care for up to 630,000 people*.”

See Robot Dog Run

Published on Feb 11, 2015

Google’s Boston Dynamics unveils smaller, lighter robotic dog named Spot.

Full Story:

Boston Dynamics, a subsidiary of Google, has unveiled a new robot dog named Spot on YouTube that is going as viral as its quadraped forebearers.

The four-legged robot runs on an electric motor that powers a series of hydraulic actuators - the motors responsible for controlling the movement of a mechanical system.

Spot can be seen walking indoors, walking through various outdoor terrains, climbing stairs and running. The video also shows Spot being kicked, presumably to demonstrate its use of a sensor that helps it navigate and walk. Spot weighs approximately 160 lbs.

Spot is the leanest and most agile in a long line of canine robots from Boston Dynamics. Earlier iterations were larger and developed to carry heavy loads; Spot has been built for search and rescue or scouting.

Boston Dynamics, which is based in Waltham, Massachusetts, was purchased by Google for an undisclosed amount in December 2013.

Boston Dynamics has gained an international reputation for machines that walk with an uncanny sense of balance, run at cheetah-like speeds faster than the fastest humans and jump 30 feet. The company has also designed mobile research robots for the U.S. Department of Defense.

OT, but seeking advice. I’m considering buying a Kindle Fire. Does anyone have any recommendations about which model is best? I want something that’s more reliable than the POS Android tablet I have now. Mostly I’d use it for reading Kindle books, but the occasional web surfing, picture viewing, etc., would be nice, too.

Have you seen Ex Machina? It supposes that at some point, robots will be so lifelike that they could “pass” as humans. The TV series Extant has the same concept, but as a subplot.

FWIW, I’ve owned a Kindle Fire for a few years now and I wouldn’t be without it. The only drawback with mine is that it’s nearly useless in daylight. Indoors:fine. Outdoors: blank. I’m considering picking up an old Kindle Touch on EBay for outdoor reading.

I’m curious, because Kindle is an Android tablet.

I’ve found that not all Android tablets are created equal. I’ve bought two here in China. The first was passable, but the power supply crapped out after a few months and the tablet’s battery followed soon after. The second has good battery life and charges through the USB port, but its custom OS has stability problems. It loses apps — it’ll say the app is not installed even though the icon is still there and even though I used the app just the day before.

Another problem is China’s blocking of all things Google, so Play is basically crippled. So, I need a pad that’s not tied to Google services.

I’m considering that one. The 8.9” one is another possibility, but I have a 7” tablet now and I like the convenience of the size — the same as a B5 paper-based notebook.

Noted theologian Rick Santorum is the true keeper of Catholic tradition. Those “new” Catholics just aren’t as Catholic as ol’ Rick. I find myself wishing there was another term that meant “black swan” that didn’t have black in it. Because that’s exactly why conservatives love CJ, because to them he represents the a high profile, hard to predict, rare event. As a young, black, vocal conservative he belongs to the demographic most alienated from the modern Republican Party, and that’s why they’ve seized on him in a kind of false hope. To them he is not only the exception to accepted wisdom, his mere existence undoes in their minds all of the assumptions underpinning institutional racism as anything resembling concrete reality. He allows them to pretend the policies they champion do not lead to predominately biased outcomes, and that the ideology they hold dear might still resonate on some level with the younger generations abandoning conservatism in droves. They hold onto him as a kind of totem to ward off their deepest fear, the knowledge that their movement is slowly and inexorably marching towards irrelevancy.

Right, but I’m talking about what made him popular with the conservative movement to begin with. You almost never see liberals turning underage kids into frontline spokespeople for liberalism. For instance while people did rally around Ahmed Mohammed that was to defend him against racial profiling, not to use him as a salesman for a larger political agenda. That’s because liberals are confident that the demographic trend-line is firmly on our side, so there’s no psychological insecure drive to prove that to ourselves.

For sure. The cons are predominantly aging and white, and that demographic is dwindling. What’s replacing them among the millennial generation are functional idiots like Shapiro, CCJ, and the whole barnyard over at Breitbart. Finding a teenager who’s both black and apparently well-spoken is like finding the Holy Grail for them — “See, we’re still relevant!”

It’s hard to say whether Pearson is playing them, or whether Akbar was playing Pearson, but this latest in a series of young conservative heroes is going to crash and burn very soon.

If Jesus was a Capitalist, why is CApitalism a relatively new economic system? I won’t claim Christ’s teachings were socialistic or Marxist especially in a modern perspective but his teachers were definitely not capitalist. I don’t think Christ would have a problem with people making money and I don’t think Francis does really either but he does have a problem with a system that encourages greed and that’s what the right’s perspective on capitalism does.

Also curious if the Lizards feel that a report on the sort of bill generated by an emergency room visit is worthy of a page. Simply as an example of how “healthcare via emergency room visit” is essentially unworkable and resource destroying for those with limited means.

* - ACA good, but also a reason my company cut a few options as being “cadillac plans”. Which included my favored option of a higher premium 90% coverage plan after a fairly limited deductible. I’m using a HSA (Health Savings Acct) now with some company contribution added in. I’ve also pretty much hit my total personal liability for the year under the plan just from this one event.

Thinking happy thoughts about pretty flowers

It’s definitely worth a page. That a kidney stone should result in financial trauma even with insurance is indicative of a seriously broke system. We’ve got to keep screaming until we make for profit insurance/health care a thing of the past.

There’s also a sexualization element that is very creepy. Many of us are fascinated by a small child acting the part of being all grown up. But the child is merely play acting as an adult at the same time as being some pure idealist caricature without sin.

Brace for climate-change denier head ‘spolsions:

China, the world’s biggest carbon polluter, will launch a national cap-and-trade scheme in 2017, the White House said on Thursday.

The move, announced on the eve of a summit in Washington between Presidents Barack Obama and Xi Jinping, would make China the world’s biggest carbon market, overtaking the European Union, and could strengthen global efforts to put a price on carbon.

The US and Chinese leaders will also commit to the decarbonisation of their economies over the course of the century, campaign groups briefed on the negotiations said. G7 countries made a similar call at their summit in Germany this year, but the support from China - as a developing country and the world’s biggest emitter - would send an important signal ahead of November’s Paris climate meeting that global economies were moving away from fossil fuels, the campaigners said.

Don’t pull away from me here, running around buck naked in the forest is a metaphor for living life in a way that isn’t explicitly crass, combative and doesn’t involve scapegoating minorities. There’s just something so psychologically fucked up about a person who, via inheritance, was gifted with so much privilege yet uses it to exude so much resentment, fear and raw negativity. It’s literal psychopathy, like his only path towards self validation and satisfaction must travel the route of tearing other people down.

Myself I believe it’s a combination of psychopathy and inferiority complex, both of which were learned.

The Donald is a rich man’s kid. So he regards everyone else on the planet as either serfs or competitors. Neither of which requires understanding. You order around and punish the former. You crush the latter. A simple but sick way of living.

The inferiority complex I’ll bet he picked up from his dad. I’m sure every interaction with his father was, “See how wonderful your father is? You’ll never live up to that.” So every action of The Donald is screaming “I’m not inferior! Not inferior!”

It’s really sad when people use the public sphere to work out their psychological problems.

Fiorina Super-PAC Makes Its Own Abortion Video

On September 19, the super-PAC backing Fiorina’s candidacy, Carly for America, posted a video to its YouTube page that appears to be a home-brewed version of the previously nonexistent video. The clip is called “Character of Our Nation,” a quote from Fiorina’s statements during the debate, when she said defunding Planned Parenthood “is about the character of our nation.”*

In an email sent out yesterday, Planned Parenthood pointed out that the video appears to be a heavily edited selection of five separate audio and video clips, spliced together “to try to concoct the video that she claimed existed” during the debate. Several of the clips, Planned Parenthood said, come from the doctored Center for Medical Progress sting videos released this summer that purport to show Planned Parenthood officials selling fetal organs for profit—a criminal allegation that state after state has found to be false.

In response to a request for comment on the veracity of the video, Fiorina campaign spokeswomen Sarah Isgur Flores wrote in an email, “Carly is a cancer survivor and doesn’t need to be lectured on women’s health by anyone. Over their long and factually incorrect letter, Planned Parenthood doesn’t and can’t deny they butchering babies and selling their organs [sic]. This is about the character of our nation.”

That last bit from her spokeswoman reads like a tacit admission that Fiorina’s campaign is coordinating with the SuperPac in violation of federal election law.

We now live in a 1979 sort of contemporary cottage kind of thing that we totally remodeled ourselves. 3 beds, 2.3 baths, pool, almost an acre. It’s too big, too much to take care of (around 1500 sq feet). I am determined to downsize. I’m sick of forking money over to fix things, and our mortgage is too much (we’ve refinanced, still too much). I’d rather be spending money on travel and helping my son who’s on the autism spectrum get settled in to an independent life. If I ever had money, I’d pay off everything I owed, give my daughter and 4 grandkids this house, help family members pay off their homes, buy a small place%2

Mark my words, the only criminal charges that will be filed, let alone result in indictments or ever see the inside of a courtroom are those that are directed at CMP, not Planned Parenthood.

Nothing PP did was illegal. Abortions are legal. Fetal tissue donations are legal.

What isn’t legal? Taping someone without their consent in CA. That’s what CMP did. That’s what CMP did when they hacked together these bogus videos that don’t even show any illegality by PP. Only a smear campaign.

Heck, the GOP had their hands on this weeks before CMP went public and did nothing because there was nothing to do. There was no wrongdoing. Nothing.

But abortion is evil in their eyes and CMP therefore is throwing everything and the kitchen sink to claim that PP did something wrong and should be destroyed as a result.

Any politician that falls for this BS should be held accountable for falling for a smear job. Millions of women depend on PP for their health care - from birth control (that the GOP zealots wants to curtail access to) to reproductive health to breast cancer screening and other general health care. Depriving PP of funding would harm all of those efforts.

re: #221 Dark_Falcon

And the GOP is beholden to the anti-choice extremists who are pushing to shut down the government again - there’s serious crossover between those who led the shutdown efforts in 2013 and the present, including the detestable Ted Cruz.

Cruz cost the nation billions of dollars with his shutdown inspired in 2013. It would do similar damage today.

As Charles pointed out upstairs, this is all on the GOP. They want to force a shutdown. A shutdown will cost the nation billions more than if they kept the government functioning. It’s the opposite of fiscal responsibility, not even beginning to touch on the issue of PP and the lives/costs saved by providing care to millions of women who would not otherwise have that care (preventative care can save money over the long term).

Nothing about this holds up to close scrutiny, and yet the media keeps trying to frame this as a balancing equation. It isn’t. Most Americans want to see PP funding remain intact. Most see that PP does good work. The GOP wants to destroy this medical provider over a fraction of work that it does - but doesn’t agree with. And they’re willing to destroy the economy to do it (again costing billions).

The same GOP that complains about the slow pace of economic recovery has done everything imaginable to thwart economic growth, including threatening shutdowns, refusing to increase the debt limit, and refusing to produce an infrastructure budget that addresses the nation’s crumbling infrastructure. The threat of a new shutdown and/or refusal to address the debt limit will further crimp the economy.

And yet, the economy continues growing - up 3.9% again in the past quarter.

Each and every step of the way the GOP has been wrong. Not just slightly wrong. But totally and unequivocably. They were wrong about the ACA killing jobs (going on 60+ months of continual job growth). They were wrong about health care costs spiking (costs are still increasing, but at a modest rate; the change is that employers are continuing their long shift to dump more and more costs on employees, which began before Obama took office). They keep being wrong.

/I’m kidding, of course.

Right, because there are no teens prominent on the left, that’s not a thing. As stated above younger generations in general trend strongly towards progressive ideas and therefore there’s no perceived need on the part of liberals to use them as spokespeople for the larger political movement in some misguided attempt to deny reality. Republicans do this precisely because they’re reacting to the prospect of their own demographic demise.

Remember Jonathan Krohn? He was the 13-year-old kid who delivered a right-wing speech at the 2009 Conservative Political Action Conference, the video of which went viral. Following his sudden Internet fame, he made appearances on dozens of political television and radio shows. Billed as the future of the Republican party, Krohn even wrote a book titled Define Conservatism. Well, it turns out that although Krohn can still define conservatism, he no longer chooses to label himself that way, instead expressing a number of liberal viewpoints to Politico.

It is rare for the media to pay attention to teenagers’ political views, particularly those under voting age. However, when Krohn initially spouted the conservative talking points, he became a welcome younger face for the Republicans, a party often associated with an older crowd. Pundits including Newt Gingrich, William Bennett and Mike Gallagher all heralded Krohn at the time.

That same speech that brought him so much attention is now hard for Krohn to stomach. He chalks it up to naivety. “That speech was something that a 13-year-old does,” Krohn tells Politico. “You haven’t formed all your opinions. You’re really defeating yourself if you think you have all of your ideas in your head when you were 12 or 13.”

Krohn credits his pursuit of education for changing his ideological ties. “It was really reading philosophy that didn’t have anything to do with politics that gave me a breather and made me realize that a lot of what I said was ideological blather that really wasn’t meaningful,” he said. “It wasn’t me thinking. It was just me saying things I had heard so long from people I thought were interesting and just came to believe for some reason, without really understanding it.” Perhaps this is why the Texas Republican party opposes the teaching of critical thinking skills.

re: #224 lawhawk

Some in the Republican party want a shutdown. Illinois Mark Kirk didn’t vote for the anti-PP bill in the Senate yesterday but voted for the clean version, so he’s clear of this. And even though Mitch McConnell wants PP gone, he’s not trying to shutdown parts of the government over it and he’s called doing so ‘lunacy’.

This is really on the House GOP, where a minority has used dissatisfaction with Speaker Boehner and dislike of President Obama to impede the functions of the Congress in order to gain attention, money, and power for themselves.

You can’t just chalk it up to a faction in the House GOP. Cruz in the Senate has been leading the charge for the shutdown and has tried to out maneuver McConnell. Just because a bunch of GOP senators are more pragmatic about keeping government functioning doesn’t mean that they’ll succeed in keeping the government going either.

The GOP is being led around by the extremists. And there are fewer and fewer adults in the GOP room to remind the GOP that they have to do more than obstruct and defund.

All the while, Congressional ratings fall into the single digits because of GOP obstructionism.

That craving is the root of the problem, and the willingness to exploit children still forming their own identities comes from a deeply creepy and problematic place.

Correct. It’s a crappy thing to do a child who is just becoming aware of the greater world around him

“Bit of fun”?

The GOP is actively working to thwart the operation of government. They are sabotaging government function by threatening a shutdown. That’s not a bit of fun. That has real world costs - as businesses and local governments incur additional costs ahead of a shutdown, let alone the costs of an actual shutdown. Localities have to put in place spending measures to act as stopgap in case the fed budget isn’t timely. That adds costs to local governments.

It’s the opposite of fiscal responsibility.

It’s anything but a “bit of fun”.

It’s the height of hypocrisy and fecklessness. And a responsible GOP leadership would smack all of this BS down with an iron fist. Boehner is not a responsible GOP leader. He’s enabling these obstructionists to carry out their plans.

Unfortunately, in the process, I suspect that the American people will end up being victims of a bit of that blood-letting. Boehner announcing that he’s bowing out likely means an even greater push by GOP wingnuts for a shutdown. After all, what’s he going to do to stop them?

MSNBC is covering the Pope’s speech to the UN, but they are watching for Boehner to address the media shortly.

It will interesting to hear if Boehner will give the real reasons he is getting out, ot if he will take a bullet for the Tea Party and say he is doing for the benefit of the party, blah, blah.

The other side to this is, Boehner can negotiate a budget resolution with whoever and not give a sh$t about what the base says. Not saying there won’t still be a shutdown. But his announcement means that for the next month his opponents don’t have much leverage over him.

On the contrary, it means that House conservatives actually have their power amplified. If you don’t understand why, think back to how Gingrich’s power base virtually disappeared in the lead-up to his getting kicked out. Boehner has likely exhausted himself trying to keep the crazies from doing too much damage. He kept the lid on but, the TP kept boiling and Boehner knows that he will not be elected Speaker in the next Congress. Government shutdowns will only be a part of America’s problem because the House will be working full time to repeal, defund, abrogate or withdraw from every last thing they don’t like. Governing will be an afterthought in the deluge of silly and unconstitutional bills that are passed. The GOP will blame the Dems for obstructing and the media will go right along with it despite the strong resemblance between the GOP’s legislation and the scrawlings on a shithouse wall in an insane asylum.

One thing to bear in mind is that Boehner has avoided past efforts to boot his ass from the speakership because no one person in the House could command enough votes to mount a serious challenge against him. With him resigning, we’re now going to see the scramble as the House GOP tries to come up with somebody who is acceptable to the wingnut caucus, but doesn’t alienate the “moderates.” This is a needle I’m not sure can be thread, not without seriously handicapping the eventual winner.

Fischer also proves that he lies about the effective corporate tax rate.

Large, profitable U.S. corporations paid an average effective federal tax rate of 12.6% in 2010, the Government Accountability Office said Monday. The federal corporate tax rate stands at 35%, and jumps to 39.2% when state rates are taken into account.Jul 1, 2013

Fischer has settled comfortably into the belief that the rich don’t have enough money because everyone else has too much. If asked, Fischer could easily provide scriptural justification for his outlook because his cadre can provide scriptural justification for anything.

(That’s assuming he didn’t have a genuine “Come to Papa” moment yesterday…)

477
bratwurst  Sep 25, 2015 • 8:06:02am

It is tempting to take a sympathetic look at Boehner today, but let’s not forget:

(A) He is quitting on his constituents who voted to have him represent them less than a year ago. What’s he’s doing is not as bad as Gingrich who resigned immediately after reelection rather than face a leadership challenge after the 1998 election, but this is still a case of putting party drama WAY AHEAD of voters.

(B) He was plain old not very good at his job. Yes, he is far from the worst human being in the Congress…but that is faint praise indeed.

The abrupt decision comes after he faced heavy pressure from conservatives to take a harder line on their causes, most recently over defunding Planned Parenthood.

Boehner, who has presided over the House since 2011, explained during a closed-door meeting with Republicans Friday morning that he had only planned to serve two terms as speaker but decided to hold onto his post after then-House Majority Leader Eric Cantor lost his seat during a primary last year, a Republican lawmaker in the room told CNN.

Boehner, who didn’t speak to reporters on Friday, also told the lawmakers that Pope Francis’ visit to Congress the day before was a crystallizing moment, according to the lawmaker. Boehner then read the prayer of St. Francis to the conference after announcing his decision.

“After yesterday with the Pope, he decided to leave on this high note,” a top Boehner aide told CNN. “Literally did not make the decision til last night.”

Boehner was one of those who could have strangled the TP in its crib. Like all the others who could have done so, he instead stood idly by because they thought that the TP would be another weapon to use against their enemies. From the Wash Post article that quoted in part earlier:

The shocking move means there’s unlikely to be a government shutdown next week. Following Boehner’s announcement, House Republicans said there was agreement to pass a clean spending bill to avert a government shutdown. Several members of the Freedom Caucus, the conservative group which led the revolt against Boehner’s leadership, said they will now support the spending bill without demands to defund Planned Parenthood attached to it.

“The commitment has been made that there will be no shutdown,” said Rep. John Flemming, (R-La.).

The House intends to vote next week on a clean spending bill and then move on to budget reconciliation — where, Republicans said, both repealing the Affordable Care Act and stripping Planned Parenthood of funding will be considered.

So, initially, a clean CR, then back to your regular scheduled upchuckery during reconciliation.

Now they have a Rabbi and a Imam (not sure of correct term) reading from both the Torah and the Koran at the same time as the Pope listens at the Ground Zero prayer service.

By the way, the Rabbi and the Imam are seated to the left and right of the Pope. And I noticed the Pope went to the Imam first when he was greeting all the religious leaders.

Good symbology.

So the first thing Cruz will have to do after repealing all of those “unconstitutional” Executive Orders is… start writing ones of his own.

I think there is a meaning in Ted calling them unconstitutional. They are not. So, when he is unable to do anything about them, he will have a ready made excuse then for the BS he is shoveling now.

He missed that boat, and now thanks to him and a know nothing and do nothing Republican party who supported kooks and fanatics, he’s looked upon as not “conservative” enough. He made that cocktail. Drink deep, John. So let’s see what rises to the top to take his place. I’ll bet it won’t be pretty. The Party of Eisenhower died right after Ike left office.

The extremists saw Boehner as the reason the GOP controlled Congress couldn’t stop Obama, when in fact he did plenty to obstruct the administration. The reason he’s so hated on the right is because he understood one basic fact, he simply didn’t have the votes to push through things like repealing the ACA. Whoever replaces him his going to run into the same brick wall of reality, the only question is how much damage they incur in the collision.

If they slam into that brick wall head first they will suffer no damage at all.

John Boehner will end up as the 12th longest-serving speaker in US history for a total 1756 days. By all accounts that is 1755 too many days served.

There are three House buildings on the Capitol: Two for speakers with more time than Boehner (Rayburn and Cannon), and one with less (Longworth)*.

Of those 1756 days as Speaker, how many days was he actually in DC doing his “job”/in session?? I’ll venture a guess that it’s about 1/3rd.

OK, this is quite touching.

“The pope, he comes up the steps right there. He comes right here,” Boehner said, pointing down at my feet. “Right here? I asked. “Right here!” Boehner said, smiling. “Right here. When he gets here, there are all of these kids he is going to bless. And you know how I get.”

“You start crying?” I asked.

Boehner shot me a look as if that is obvious.

“So. So, the pope puts his arm around my left arm,” Boehner said as he pulls my arm up to his shoulder. Boehner was now fully committed to acting it out. “Hold on, hold on,” he said as I pulled my arm away. “Let me finish. The pope says to me, ‘Please pray for me.’ ”

“Please pray for me,” Boehner said as he dipped his head. “He said, ‘Please pray for me.’ ”

Boehner stood there for another 10 seconds, not saying a word, his hands at his sides, and then turned sharply toward his security detail, the now open doors and a shimmering sunset on Capitol Hill.

I was pretty skeptical when he went to WaPo from NRO. But he really never fit in at NRO. He “reported” the news rather than act as a pundit.
