John Boehner Is Forced Out by the Far Right

Get ready for a new era of GOP bad craziness
Politics • Views: 41,334

In a move that’s been coming for a long time, the far right of the Republican Party has finally gone so bonkers that House Speaker John Boehner is going to resign instead of dealing with these crazies any more.

Mr. Boehner, 65, from Ohio, had struggled from almost the moment he took the speaker’s gavel in 2011 to manage the challenges of divided government and to hold together his fractious and increasingly conservative Republican members.

Most recently, he was trying to craft a solution to keep the government open through the rest of the year, but was under pressure from a growing base of conservatives who told him that they would not vote for a bill that did not defund Planned Parenthood.

Mr. Boehner’s announcement lessened the chance of a government shutdown next week, because Republican leaders will push for a short-term funding measure to keep the government operating and the speaker will no longer be deterred by those who threatened his job.

So this probably averts a government shutdown over Planned Parenthood (Planned Parenthood!) next week, but it also means Boehner will be replaced by a far right loon, and House Republicans will be even more ridiculous and hate-driven than they already are.

A RWNJ running the House in the year leading up to the 2016 elections?

Is Boehner working for the DNC now?

I’m gong to be very interested in seeing how the leadership shakes up. Remember this person will be third in line for the president behind Obama and Biden. Oh and it also means Steve “David Duke without the baggage” Scalise is second in the GOP House leadership. One step closer to having a 21st century KKK fan as Speaker, GOP!

I don’t see how this actually averts a shutdown. I know a bunch of folks say that is the case, but how? The GOP wants to defund PP, and Boehner would have to rely on the Democrats to make that happen (goodbye Hastert rule again), so what’s keeping the GOP from trying to force the issue?

After all, Boehner let the GOP run defund/destroy/delay ACA bills up week after week to the tune of 50+ votes that never got past the House. They got a sequester that holds spending in check. They got certain tax cuts made permanent. That was’t enough. Now they’re threatening to refuse to fund the federal government again - this time over PP. And they may get their way in one form or another.

I think that this increases the likelihood of a shutdown, because no matter how quickly Boehner leaves (and he’s done by end of October), it’s not soon enough for the GOP extremists that are itching to take over and impose their will on everyone and everything even if it means gridlock and inaction and presidential veto after veto (or not even passing the Senate). If they can’t force defunding through regular budget means, watch for them to try through reconciliation.

This is a GOP that can’t be placated or taught that concessions and negotiations are part of politics. It’s all or nothing, and they want to force a shutdown over BS videos involving CMP. They want to harm health care access for women, deprive millions access to health care through PP, and they think that this is a winning issue.

The pushback on all this needs to be hard.

Yeah I don’t get it either. I can only guess that want Boehner out for their post-CR agenda, whatever that is.

But the only basis for believing it helps avert a shutdown is if you believe it frees Boehner to do whatever the hell he wants, and to tell the base to fo. But the reporting so far is that that isn’t what Boehner is going to do.

I’m so glad that radio personality who’s a big dope, Mark Levin, gets to insist on who gets to be the next Speaker of the House. No matter how insanely conservative the candidate may be, it wont be sufficient to Levin or other right wingers. They want a firebrand and ideologically pure extremist. Nothing less will suffice, and any attempt to actually govern will be met with resistance.

Governance requires accommodation and negotiation, and this GOP refuses to do any of it.
