I don’t know much about Bloomberg, but from what I’ve gathered, his ego has close to the same gravitational pull as Trump. So I could see it possibly being for real. I just don’t see what his constituency would be. Then again, a Clinton-Bush-Trump-Bloomberg general election would be such a shitshow that, given the right odds (and assuming gambling was legal), I’d put some money on. Because American politics is in the age of surreality.

Yeah I don’t know what his base would be.

Why would that bother Mike Bloomberg? He would just buy a base for himself, like he did in New York.

Truth to tell, schadenfreude-overload prospects aside, Mayor Mike would probably make a fairly good campaigner: he at least, unlike Donald Ferret-head, has had some experience on the trail…

Just published this as a page, but it bears repeating here - there’s an excellent piece up at the Daily Beast, collecting quotes from various White Supremacists, who are doing the happy dance over Boehner’s departure. I am not linking to their sites - no Google Juice for you waterheads - but here’s the link to the DB story, and you can follow the links outta there, if you are masochistic enough: http://loath.es/1G9eh0g

A couple of telling points: the racist shitheels ‘fess up to the fact that Donald Trump’s appeal is basically that he hates on brown people and wants to cleanse the U.S. of all non-whites.

And that the future of the GOP belongs to them, since they are the loyal base.

Yep. The racist, theocratic freaks are the real power in the GOP. And they know it.

The giant rupture in the GOP, where the decent conservatives finally have to own up to the fact that they’ve been feeding this beast for more than two decades now, and it’s grown up to be dangerous - actually physically dangerous to the continued survival of not just the GOP, but America and Planet Earth … that day just got closer.

Yeah I don’t know what his base would be.

Bloomberg’s base would be all the old-school Republicans who are banging their heads on their desks wondering what the hell happened and where the fuck did all those clowns come from.

He successfully managed a city with a dozen congressional districts, which makes him almost like a governor, he’s more than competent. He rebuilt a jurisdiction that was in real trouble, he balanced budgets and diversified the economy and updated infrastructure and built parks and bike lanes and tripled tourism, he turned NYC from Manhattan-and-some-“suburboros” into 5 solid boros, he managed 2 massive hurricanes and the rebuilding therefrom, he’s had zero scandals, he’s got national security cred (NYPD has an anti-terrorism unit operating in a dozen countries, they’ve stopped more actual plots than the FBI did), schools have improved, he got the homeless fed and sheltered, he’s leftish on women’s rights, the environment, healthcare and immigration, right of center on economics but not a whackjob glibertarian, the streets got plowed and the trash picked up, and we have the lowest crime rate of any city over a million.

I would absolutely vote for Bloomberg.

The combo of Boehner and the Pope’s visit really seems to be sending the shitkicking White Supremacists around the bend. Comment threads on their sites are a wonder to behold - open calls for genocide and anger at the sight of the Pope washing the feet of Blah People, as well as rape fantasies and sick sexual deviancy:

There’s a growing acknowledgment that the mayors of major U.S. cities are starting to be the strength of the Democratic party. These are people who actually have to Get Shit Done, as opposed to the doctrinaire clowns who only show up every 2 or 6 years, spout a bunch of Randian nonsense, and then retreat behind a wall of negative TV ads back to the cushy K-street paid lobbyist junkets & graft.

Mayors have to make government work or cities implode. That requires an understanding that government is essential - it has things that it has to do.

Anathema to the RWNJs and glibertarians.

some things found out monitoring what you might call the anti-democrat engineers’ late nite chat group at work

- not all of them hold “conservative” views by a long shot - they just like ragging on democrats. it’s not about policy, it’s about hanging with the guys and making jokes about approved targets

- misinformation of course is rife, and not surprising, since they tell me they gave up on all actual news sources, including of course “too liberal” fox news, long ago, and “get their news from blogs. yanno, people link stuff”

- my buddies dont like trump, and they dont like the wall st gop - as a matter of fact, they dont like anybody, most of them - all they know is that “hillary is going to jail”

re: #52 dog philosopher ஐஒஔ௸

some things found out monitoring what you might call the anti-democrat engineers’ late nite chat group at work

Your hazard pay will be in next week’s check.

My conservative-turned-independent buddy matches up with the first bullet point perfectly. As long as liberals are angry, he couldn’t give two shits about actual policy.

As I predicted Eric Cantor is bitter.

Friday was another selfless act. By stepping down amid the tumult in the House conference, he has given my former colleagues in the House, fellow members of the Republican Party and the broader conservative movement a chance to demonstrate to the American people that we are prepared to govern and worthy of their trust.

He gets to use his new position to lie in the NY Times.

Prepared to govern is pure BS.

re: #69 Backwoods_Sleuth

Two thoughts come to mind… First is Andrew Sullivan’s old argument that Obama is temperamentally conservative, even if his policy positions tend to be center-left. And I wonder if part of what pisses off some of the movement conservative types is that Obama is more deliberate, reasoned, and smart than they are. They used to hold themselves out as being those things, but the rabble has become reactionary to such a degree that being any of those things makes you a traitor to the cause.

The second thought is, after reading that, I need to make myself a drink and get back to college football games.

I don’t know about that, but if so, how stupid are the Republicans and why am I asking obvious questions?

In the 1990s, Republicans and Democrats pretty much split the Asian American community. And they had momentum.

Yes, they’re pretty stupid.

They also had a respectable showing among Hispanics in 2004. But they decided to be dicks and the Hipsanic vote I think will eventually be a strongly Democratic as the African-American vote.

Right now, the Asian American community is 72-77% Democratic. If the Republicans say ANYTHING more about immigration, it’s gonna go African American-levles (85-90%).

Right. What the GOP refuses to admit is their own policies and rhetoric are why minorities don’t like their party. They like to crow about “free stuff” but the reality is they did it to themselves.

And then there’s “a noun, a verb and 911” Rudy…

I think even more so County Executives, especially like here, where you have a big city and a surrounding county with even more people. You really have to coordinate a lot of different interests.

I remember when Gary Locke was running for Governor after being King County Executive, they pointed out that there were 17 states with fewer people than King County—and 2 with less land area.

I’d like to see Dow Constantine follow the same trajectory, and maybe farther.

Chicken-and-egg situation, really. California was moving leftwards even in the Reagan days, as in 1976 Ford won it while losing nationwide, while in 1984 Reagan won by less than his nationwide margin despite being a Californian. In 1992, Bush Sr. did terribly among California Latinos (some estimates put him in third behind Perot). Prop 187 was a reaction that the GOP thought they could get away with during an offyear election. Oops.
