Saturday Song: The Tallest Man on Earth, “Like the Wheel”

Like the wheel that will take you home
Music • Views: 46,326

YouTube

Accompanied by his own guitar and a great choir of backup singers, here’s Kristian Matsson (aka The Tallest Man on Earth) with a beautiful performance of one of his older songs, “Like the Wheel.”

And this is a good time to notify you, dear reader, that starting at about 4pm Pacific time we’ll be going offline for a little while to do some system upgrades on our web and database servers. We’re movin’ on up to the latest versions of PHP and MySQL; not sure how long this will take, but hopefully it won’t be too arduous.

Charles good luck may all the things technical go well for ya. I scheduled an Eclipse Page for about 7:pm, I’m inviting any of us with the desire to post their moon eclipse pictures. Liveblog the eclipse, and thank you very much for the forum to do so. It’s hard work to maintain this place, we appreciate it.

If a signal were beamed at us specifically, it wouldn’t be encrypted—every bit of ingenuity possible would be exercised to make it readable. If it’s just a matter of detecting alien communications with each other, determining that a signal is artificial has nothing to do with understanding its content. This guy’s an idiot.

It amuses me that people look to Snowden for technical expertise. Man’s not a hacker, he’s just a useful idiot who was in the right place at the right time. Very few “hacks” are technical in nature - most of them are social engineering.

Random trivia: Everyone here knows I love cats—big wild ones, small domesticated ones, all of ‘em. The Twitter accounts that tweet photos often don’t add descriptions, so I began to wonder how to tell leopards & jaguars apart.

Turns out it’s pretty easy—it’s all (or at least mostly) in the spots. Jaguars have rosettes with spots in the middle, leopards have plain ones with no spots in the middle. Cheetahs have regular solid spots that aren’t arranged into rosettes, but they look different enough (to me) that I never have a problem identifying one.

Oh, one more thing: Black panthers in Africa & Asia are leopards, the ones in the Americas are jaguars.

Here’s an interesting blog post on big cats I came across while googling.

My prediction, because it’s what I want to see and because it seems like it should be easily observable, is skewed isotope ratios in these sedimentary rocks they’ve examined—less C-13 than in volcanic rocks.

Of course, there are deniers here who won’t accept the obvious—that those skewed ratios indicate that the carbon even in the 3.9 billion year old Issua formation in Greenland (and in the even earlier zircons embedded in it) have been processed by life. To me, it’s a smoking gun—microfossils like you don’t begin to see until 3.6 billion years ago are just a bonus.

Not the campaign but a Walker supporting Unintimidated Super PAC. Chuck accused the Super PAC of starting the rumor in order to try and get the aide fired because they allegedly viewed him as ineffectual. There’s also apparently some pre-existing bad blood between Chuck and the guy behind Unintimidated, because in his article Chuck whined:

He also pushed fake information about GotNews [dot] com editor-in-chief Chuck C. Johnson to National Review and several other cuckservative websites.

It would at least kill off the Aliens.

2. was actually cured?

Of course not. Nobody wants to actually investigate this bullshit because they know they’re not going to like what they find out.

Faith healing stories are always kinda sketchy because you’re effectively relying on hearsay. You have no one’s word but the speaker that they or their loved one actually had the condition claimed to have been cured.

re: #99 KGxvi

I remember that nukes are one of the mechanisms used to terraform Mars in Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars trilogy, mostly in Green Mars (the second one). The idea is to drill moholes several miles deep, deposit the nukes, fill in the holes, set the bombs off, and let the heat from the detonations melt the shallower underground frozen aquifers, while trusting that the bombs were deep enough to prevent radiation from getting into the (hopefully) biosphere.

Seemed to work, but obviously that proves nothing.

“It’s never lupus.”

—Gregory House

Of course, that was a joke. “lupus”, not “lupus erythematosus”, is tuberculosis of the skin—very common in those days, almost unheard of now, so when someone says “lupus” we think they mean the autoimmune disease.

It’s probably just an attempt to scare Chucky. I’d be very surprised if they actually follow up with a lawsuit.

And Chucky’s too stupid to be scared by something like this.

The entire story is stupid on its face. He “reporting” on “several GOP operatives” spreading a rumor so they could Wiley fired, and he ran the story without getting a comment from Wiley. That kind of reporting gets one in trouble but fast.

Besides, if Wiley were just a poor employee, why resort to rumors of restroom blow jobs? Just fire his ass.

Libel suits are covered under anti-SLAPP, and it’s legitimately debatable whether Rick Wiley as the national campaign manager for Walker is a public figure or not. If he isn’t he would still has to prove that Chuck knew it was false. Also, it’s Dayspring’s organization that sent the C&D letter, not Wiley.

Well I’m outta here. Going to go help with a dive class tomorrow. Nothing fancy, just sort of swim behind the group and make sure that nobody has any problems. Heading to Florida (Port Charlotte) on Thursday to see my Dad for a few days, and pick up the van from him. Might get a dive in while I’m down there, really depends on how the timeline breaks out.

Looks like the shop wants me to start my EFR (Emergency First Responder (CPR / Defib / First Aid)) instructor training that next week. If so, that will pretty much blow making a side-trip out the window.

In any case, I’ll catch you all tomorrow evening, and remember, if the women don’t find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Duck Dynasty star Willie Robertson backs Trump after tycoon vowed to bring back Christmas and brandished his childhood Bible in an appeal to the conservative right

* Donald Trump called Willie Robertson to the stage at Oklahoma State Fair
* Duck Dynasty star said he ‘liked me some Trump’ because they are both successful businessmen with TV shows and have beautiful wives
* Trump earlier said he would reclaim Christmas if he becomes President
* Vowed to bring back phrase ‘merry Christmas’ instead of ‘happy holidays’

My first thought: First the Palins, then the Robertsons. Trump’s rolling up the right-of-center reality people. Fusing their DERP with his to create a Wingularity that may destroy the solar system.

My second thought: How much does it suck to be Bobby Jindal right now? Jindal spent years courting the Robertson’s and Willy just kicked him to the curb.

It’s the usual “persecuted Christian” crap. Somehow, recognizing other religions and traditions diminishes the status of Christianity, the majority religion in the USA.

Meanwhile, Kim Davis claiming that her spending a few nights in jail made her a martyr diminishes the real pain and suffering of some real martyrs, Christian or otherwise. She and these other modern day “martyrs” would be recanting as soon as they saw the implements of torture used in the Middle Ages.

Yeah, I’d be willing to sign an armistice in the War on Christmas as soon as we forced it back inside the November/December perimeter.

So, it looks like Breitbart’s resident white nationalist homepage editor has deleted her twitter account. Twitter says it doesn’t exist, not “suspended” and it doesn’t forward to a new handle in advanced search, which is what happens when an account changes their handle. If I had to guess I’d say Breitbart’s management finally got sick of having to deal with all the backlash from her overtly racist bullshit and finally forced her to choose between Twitter and keeping her job.

Edit: Somehow I forgot to mention who I’m actually talking about LOL. Katie McHugh.

World Youth Day was held in Denver in the summer of 1993. It was a big deal. I read somewhere that the population of Denver proper (which in 1993 was below 500,000) tripled when Pope John Paul II showed up.

My grandmother (mom’s mom) was there. She wanted my sister and I to be there. My mother forbade it. It was the only time my grandmother visited Colorado.

I grew up in a decidedly non-religious household. I became aware of it in third grade elementary school. Some classmate asked me if I went to church. I said no. I turned into weirdo in some of my classmates eyes after that. Later, I asked my father “Why don’t we go to church?” My father replied “Because, son, we’re not church-going-to people.” I’ll never forget that. It was so matter-of-fact. That was 25 years ago and I still remember.

Primary school days for me fucking sucked balls. Until halfway through my junior year in high school, then I became Mr. Popular who lettered in soccer and ski racing.

Sounds similar to my experience, without the letters. My dad worked six days a week, and Sunday was his day off. Mom had a hearing problem, and said going to church was pointless for her because she couldn’t hear the minister. I got practically no religious instruction at home, and of course no Sunday school, either. So I was the oddball among my peer group. One guy in junior high figured I must be Jewish, because I didn’t go to church. This was suburban Long Island, where being a churchgoer was more of a social status thing than something heartfelt for most people. My only formal experience with church as a kid was my christening in a Presby church and attending various cousins’ weddings.

I really didn’t get what the big deal was all about.

Clearly, if we want to stop refugees we need to stop teaching them English in school! //

There’s been like a dozen or so individual papal statements throughout the whole RCC history that are considered infallible. If we’re generous and say there were 20, that’s the rate of 266/20 - 1 infallible statement per 13 Popes. It’s even unclear whether Francis will ever make an infallible pronouncement of his own.

233
Nyet  Sep 27, 2015 • 3:32:34am
The most important prophet, so far as we are concerned, is the one who is living in our day and age. This is the prophet who has today’s instructions from God to us. God’s revelation to Adam did not instruct Noah how to build the ark. Every generation has need of the ancient scripture, plus the current scripture from the living prophet. Therefore, the most crucial reading and pondering that you should do is of the latest inspired words from the Lord’s mouthpiece. That is why it is essential that you have access to and carefully read his words. […]
Beware of those who would set up the dead prophets against the living prophets, for the living prophets always take precedence.

If the living Prophet says we’ve always been at war with Eastasia, then ain’t that the revealed truth!

re: #235 wheat-dogghazi-mailgate

I suppose it doesn’t come as a great shock then that she’s also a 9/11 truther… with a twist:

In the years since the 9/11 attacks, dozens of books have sought to explore the truth behind the official version of events that day - yet to date, none of these publications has provided a satisfactory answer as to WHY the attacks occurred and who was ultimately responsible for carrying them out.

Taking a broad, millennia-long perspective, Laura Knight-Jadczyk’s 9/11: The Ultimate Truth uncovers the true nature of the ruling elite on our planet and presents new and ground-breaking insights into just how the 9/11 attacks played out.

9/11: The Ultimate Truth makes a strong case for the idea that September 11, 2001 marked the moment when our planet entered the final phase of a diabolical plan that has been many, many years in the making. It is a plan developed and nurtured by successive generations of ruthless individuals who relentlessly exploit the negative aspects of basic human nature to entrap humanity as a whole in endless wars and suffering in order to keep us confused and distracted to the reality of the man behind the curtain.

Drawing on historical and genealogical sources, Knight-Jadczyk eloquently links the 9/11 event to the modern-day Israeli-Palestinian conflict. She also cites the clear evidence that our planet undergoes periodic natural cataclysms, a cycle that has arguably brought humanity to the brink of destruction in the present day.

For its no nonsense style in cutting to the core of the issue and its sheer audacity in refusing to be swayed or distracted by the morass of disinformation that has been employed by the Powers that Be to cover their tracks, 9/11: The Ultimate Truth can rightly claim to be THE definitive book on 9/11 - and what that fateful day’s true implications are for the future of mankind.

Her thesis thus mirrors the thesis of another crank popular in certain circles, Gregory Klimov, acc. to whom there exist so-called “degenerates” - most of them Jewish and homosexual, but not only - who rule the world.

antimatrix. org/Convert/Klimov-Degenerates-Rule-The-World.html

Q: But how do you know you are not a degenerate yourself?

[…]

Everyone can perform a quick and easy self-test. For all those, that fall into the 3rd stage of degeneracy (birth defects), and the 2nd category of degeneracy (mental diseases), it seems everything is clear. What remains to be seen, is whether you fall into the first category of degeneracy (sexual perversions).

In our progressive age, many sexual perversions, under pressures of degenerate propaganda in mass media (disinformation), became nearly a norm.

The position 69 is already recommended in schools in the USA as a good contraceptive measure. Many, out of category of normal people, started doing this.

So, how do we check ourselves on the subject of sexual perversions? Well, very simple actually. Try to do THIS in a normal way, as our fathers and grandfathers did age in, age out, “face to face, and the man on the top”. Try several times. Without lies, without deceit. Do not try to imagine, when you have sex with your wife, that you have sex with some other man, or a dog, or a pig…

If the results of this self-test will be positive, there is nothing to worry about for you. You were simply brainwashed by degenerate propaganda and you got accustomed to doing idiotic things.

Even if the previous analysis of “your family tree” gave you a different result, it all means that you were not told that you are adopted child, or your parents were not told they were adopted children.

So I took a look and she goes on and on about “Ashkenazi Jewish Zionists”, their “descent from the Khazars” and their “genetically caused psychopathology” (those are not quotes but my reformulations of her “thesis”). Funny how in the end it’s always about “teh Joos”.

Or reptilian aliens who later became Joos.

Does she mention the Rothschilds? They have to be in every decent Jewish conspiracy theory.

re: #203 teleskiguy

I grew up in a decidedly non-religious household. I became aware of it in third grade elementary school. Some classmate asked me if I went to church. I said no. I turned into weirdo in some of my classmates eyes after that. Later, I asked my father “Why don’t we go to church?” My father replied “Because, son, we’re not church-going-to people.” I’ll never forget that. It was so matter-of-fact. That was 25 years ago and I still remember.

:-P

My father was raised a Catholic Yat.

My mother sort of a Presbyterian, who had lived everywhere from Illinois to Cuba.

The first church us siblings attended was the black church our maid went to, (may God bless Belldora) because she didn’t want us “babies to go to hell.”

As someone who was later confirmed and briefly attended Episcopalian (did I spell that right?), the “catechism on acid” reference wins the internet.

Don’t show his books to the GOP…

So, how do you know which kind of degenerates rule your country?

Well, by the same method we find out if there is a cat under your bed at home. We will wave the paper mouse, tied to a thin thread, and will see what kind of reaction we get.

Let us wave with our paper mouse in front of the government we are testing…

How does this government react on the movement of rights of homosexuals?

How does this government react on the death sentence to degenerate-criminals?

How does this government defend the interests of the class of the blue-color workers of this country?

How does this government defend the interests of the parasitic class of degenerates?

Simple questions. Simple answers. Simple text.

The same methodology could be applied to any other structure - science, art, army, press, TV…

So this is a few days old, but still.

But the founder of Jewish World Review, an online magazine that publishes Coulter’s syndicated column, isn’t buying her excuse.
“She could have been drunk, she could have been high, I don’t know, I have to give her the benefit of the doubt…but I don’t have to delude myself,” Binyamin Jolkovsky, who has served as the publication’s editor-in-chief for nearly 18 years, told The Daily Beast. “Pandering to Jewish money is about as anti-Semitic a stereotype as you could put forth. Her ‘eff-ing Jews’ comment is not identifying Israel—it’s identifying Jews, plural, and all Jews. There is no excuse for that. You can’t just wiggle out of something that vile and hateful.”

Right, that’s my problem with all the conservatives who were “outraged” by Coulter’s remarks about Jews. She’s been saying offensive shit about other groups for years and they had no problem with her then.

Here’s one case where I was a long way ahead of the curve. Here’s what I had to say in comparing Ann Coulter with Sarah Palin almost three years ago:

No she’s worse. Sarah Palin just plain can’t explain complicated concepts, or string together a complex sentence, so she DERPs. Ann Coutler can do both such things and in her books she does at times. But at other times she presents matters simply which she has explained as complex in other contexts, which can only be ascribed to either deliberate dishonesty or a reckless indifference to the truth. So while she might discuss Richard Nixon’s motives for a questionable action (Coulter goes easier on Nixon than some other right-wing writers as she thinks Nixon performed a critical national service in keeping the House UnAmerican Activities Committee focused on Alger Hiss), the same sort of action by Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton will be automatically ascribed by Coulter to some variation of “liberal soft-headedness”. Her lack of charity towards those who disagree with her is of the same extreme level reached by Ayn Rand.

Here’s some information about Speaker of the House wannabe Dan Webster, stolen shamelessly from the “Stuff Fundies Like” blog (not that I think Darryl minds).

Daniel Webster is running for Speaker of the House and if that doesn’t terrify you it probably should. You see, Webster is a long-time Gothard man who has ties to the Christian Reconstruction movement. As Down with Tyranny blog reports:

Daniel Webster’s intimate, over three decade long involvement with evangelist Bill Gothard appears similar to a classic guru-disciple or mentor-pupil relationship and has included speaking multiple times at Gothard’s conferences, traveling with Gothard to Korea in 1996, using Bill Gothard’s material to homeschool his six children, making an instructional video for Gothard’s Institute For Basic Life Principles, and, when Webster became speaker of the Florida legislature in 1996, hiring four of Gothard’s IBLP employees as high-level Florida State House staffers.

Gothard is the creator/inventor of the perverse system under which Josh Duggar and his many siblings were/are being raised. Gothard himself was kicked out of his organization about two years ago when it became clear that he had sexually harassed at least three dozen young women volunteering at his org. If you want to know what Gothard teaches, this post from Homeschoolers Anonymous is enlightening: homeschoolersanonymous.wordpress.com

Compare the Telegraph:

Mohammed Muraseen and Saffa Hussein, two friends from Damascus in Syria, decided that their husky puppy, Loos, should also make the journey to Europe.

and the UN:

Many animal lovers will relate to this. 17-year-old Aslan Al Hakim from Damascus, Syria. And we’ve seen many like him carrying their animals with them on the long journey from Syria, across the Mediterranean Sea and through Europe. When forced to flee home because of war, many people would never dream of leaving their pets behind.

Al Hakim is nowhere mentioned in the first article… The reason may be that the reporter misunderstood the information told to him by the guys who cared for the puppy at the moment, or the guys did not identify the true owner.
But neither does the UN video mention that Al Hakim didn’t exactly carry the puppy alone for 500 km but rather that caring about the puppy had been a group responsibility all along.

Nice.

David Brooks made a hand gesture explaining the Pope is dealing on an up and down plane where we (the MTP panel) are all horizontal.

And guess what? It came off just like the Pope “blessing” everyone as the Pope mobile passes by.

Thank you David for the Blessing. I think…could be a curse.

Sick now…time to go put another coat of urethane varnish on the front door. Back later…

Said on Fox News while talking to Tucker Calson, of course. And of course this jerk has no stats to back up his claim. The Washington Times tellingly omits the part about disabled children, but includes other parts about MacDonald raving about welfare recipients ‘gaming the system’. But this can be better handled than by putting out a list of who is getting state aid.

Honestly, when you look at the tea party ideology, what part of it isn’t driven by a need for supremacy and domination?

In their foreign policy vision, diplomacy and negotiation aren’t valued; we have to bomb the hell out of our adversaries if they don’t do exactly what we want, whenever we make the demand.

Their domestic policy is all about the continued domination of white privilege, the humiliation and scapegoating of the less fortunate, and creating a permanent underclass that should be thanking their superiors for every crumb that falls from the table to them.

Even their religious views are all about supremacy of the evangelical Christian beliefs over the rights and beliefs of others.

Everything they are and believe is about domination and supremacy; they are absolutely terrified of the idea of having to co-exist with people of different values and beliefs.

They’re sad, small, pathetic people.

She survived it for one simple reason: she merely stated what traditional Christianity teaches. In traditional Christianity you only get to heaven through Jesus. One excuse might be if you’ve never heard of him, but that’s that. There’s no exception for Jews (though lately some Protestant groups did begin teaching that there’s an exception for Jews).

So conservatives knew that attacking Coulter would be attacking what churches taught for centuries, and that’s a no-no for them.

Traditional monotheistic religions have never been paragons of tolerance.

The newest RWNJ outrage is over comments Pope Francis made saying “Jesus was a failure on the cross”. Here’s the part of the homily in question, courtesy of the NYT:

We can get caught up measuring the value of our apostolic works by the standards of efficiency, good management and outward success which govern the business world. Not that these things are unimportant! We have been entrusted with a great responsibility, and God’s people rightly expect accountability from us. But the true worth of our apostolate is measured by the value it has in God’s eyes. To see and evaluate things from God’s perspective calls for constant conversion in the first days and years of our vocation and, need I say, great humility. The cross shows us a different way of measuring success. Ours is to plant the seeds: God sees to the fruits of our labors. And if at times our efforts and works seem to fail and produce no fruit, we need to remember that we are followers of Jesus… and his life, humanly speaking, ended in failure, the failure of the cross

That’s a horrid misinterpretation to convert the last part of that homily into “Jesus was a failure on the cross”.

It seems to me that Francis’ point was that strictly from the viewpoint as a single secular human individual his life could be viewed as a failure. He is betrayed, executed, and his followers scattered. But Francis is saying that his true success and legacy was planting the spiritual seeds for those who follow.

That’s strictly Hostage Rescue Team territory. A subset of SWAT, gets many kinds of specific training for hundreds of hours. Probably harder to get into that SEAL or Para rescue. IOW impossible for 99.99% of us that have been trained to use a gun if needed.

That’s also where the unarmed will sometimes jump in. bad idea of course, but some of us call that “Burning house response” like those that will run right in thinking a person is trapped in there. Of course that endangers you and anyone that tries to save your sorry ass.

In other psycho news, a wingnut coworker of mine and his wife are expecting right now. A baby girl. I asked if he had any names in mind. He said he is seriously thinking of “Reagan Trump <last name>”

…I think I may need to switch departments.

Poor girl.

While they simultaneously say, “Don’t worry, charities will take up the slack.”.

If that was the case why was the social safety net created in the first place?

Oh wait. I know.

Football game in St Louis delayed. One of the pyrotechnic boxes they use during the introduction of the home players set fire to the astroturf under the box.

It’s not surprising that RWNJ’s would want to muddy the waters when the Pope is talking about the concept of self-sacrifice.

If I were the Pope I would get caught hot mic saying they protestant too much.

As someone who works in charities…..IT DOESN’T HAPPEN. Charitable giving has remained flat with every tax cut that has gone through Congress.

Actually, upon further reflection, that Spock dying of radiation poisoning Hallmark ornament makes a good case for Christmas needing some kind of drastic intervention.

Fonzie jumping a shark would be a great ornament.

It does seem to be their main objection: “The Pope is going to make me give up something, so I have to prove him wrong.”

I’ve heard false prophet (as in Revelation false prophet) as an epitaph about this and the previous pope tho.

Boehner should open a tavern.

ObserverArt  Sep 27, 2015 • 10:55:05am

I’m going to call bullshit on some of Boehner’s complaints in that Politico article.

To me he never really tried to use all his tools to shut the Tea Party up. He and others tried to placate the TP crazies too often by going with their demands. He and the other supposed ‘establishment’ Republican’s should have stopped bringing their demands up in bills like the 50+ or whatever times they tried to repeal Obamacare.

They should have told them no we are not bringing them up to the whole house and fought out the reasons in closed door sessions instead of all the public grandstanding. Yes, I remember the bellowing deep voiced Boehner acting like he was pissed at Obama and Democrat and they were usurping the constitution, blah, blah, blah. Playing to the TP party all the time not only did not work it made the whole party look like incompetent clods. Boehner the most.

So don’t cry about the others now Johnny, you should have done your job and fought them while you had the job. Now you get tough in the press. You should have taken them on in the press years ago. You could have used the press and the Democrats to put the TP nuts in their place, but you always played along. You were spineless.

I’m not buying it. You don’t grow a spine after the fact. It shows how clueless and powerless you were. Fool.

Funny thing is I actually picture him as a bartender all this time. A guy who has to tolerate drunks and fools.

Yeah, given the choice of somebody jacking my car/truck or getting shot in the head by some ammosexual, I’ll give up my vehicle every time. That’s just me—ymmv.
