Experience the Vastness of the Solar System: “Riding Light”

How long does it take a photon to travel from the sun to Jupiter?
Science • Views: 55,794

Vimeo

In our terrestrial view of things, the speed of light seems incredibly fast. But as soon as you view it against the vast distances of the universe, it’s unfortunately very slow. This animation illustrates, in realtime, the journey of a photon of light emitted from the surface of the sun and traveling across a portion of the solar system, from a human perspective.

I’ve taken liberties with certain things like the alignment of planets and asteroids, as well as ignoring the laws of relativity concerning what a photon actually “sees” or how time is experienced at the speed of light, but overall I’ve kept the size and distances of all the objects as accurate as possible. I also decided to end the animation just past Jupiter as I wanted to keep the running length below an hour.

From the photon’s frame of reference the answer is zero to anywhere in the universe.

“Opinions” like this piss me the hell off. Because these people don’t give a fuck about poverty. It’s all about spreading a false narrative. “While the Pope is talking about poverty, our dictator President and his greedy wife plan an extravagant dinner for a human rights violator. I’m so struck by that, because I care about poverty.” ::rest of panel nods in agreement::

Forget the fact that he IS the President and that these dinners have been had by countless other Presidents and that this is part of the diplomatic process, but OH MY GOD, LOOK AT THE TIMING OF ALL THIS. IT’S ALL CONNECTED.

Ugh.

My brother liked an article on Facebook, something from Al Jazeera.

Is there a Theology to this New Atheism?
The unwarranted attack by Richard Dawkins on Ahmed Mohamed was both intolerant and dogmatic.

For me, the most jarring line was this:

The self-proclaimed prophets of New Atheism - the loudest Islamophobic ideology of our time, competing with neo-Nazis for attention, would not let go.

First, I don’t think it’s true, given what I see every day from self-identified Christians, but more importantly, where is the idea of ‘New Atheism’, or Atheism as a belief system coming from? Is it from atheists themselves? Or is it projection by believers? I’ve seen, many, many times believers claim that atheism is a religion based on the rejection of THEIR god, as if the only choices were to believe in THEIR god or believe in none, and that belief is the baseline, the null hypothesis, the norm, and that nonbelief is the deviation from that norm.

I’m sure that for some atheists their nonbelief is a reaction against what they were raised to believe. But for many of us, that’s just not so. I was raised in a family of believers, and all my siblings are believers of one sort or another. Looking back, though, I don’t think I EVER believed. I didn’t BECOME atheist by rejecting what I was taught. It simply never made sense to me. It didn’t click, didn’t comport with the world I saw. And I’ve never felt something missing - another belief believers project onto nonbelievers. I just don’t think there’s a god, nor do I see any reason why there should be one.

What I CAN see is a reason why people want there to be one, whether for comfort, or to feel less lost in a world they can’t control, or to give justification for hating Those People. I’ve seen nothing that convinces me that those gods are not simply manifestations of loves, hates, and aspirations of the believers themselves. So I don’t believe.

But why should that absence of a belief be seen as something shared, some common characteristic that would lead us to organize, or to see some prominent atheists as “leaders” of a “movement”? Organized atheism makes no sense, just as ‘prophets’ of atheism makes no sense.

I spent the evening at the Popalooza on the Parkway yesterday and there are my thoughts. First, I wasn’t inside the frickin exclusion zone after all. Reports called it as extending to the Delaware River, but it excluded Columbus Blvd, the street I live on. Oh well. We got a cab to the edge of the zone near the checkpoints and started walking. It was a very pleasant crowd, naturally and it was so strange walking on streets that should have been jammed with cars. The security was amazing. Once we got in there were all sorts of people from all over the world, and people in religious clothing of all sorts. We saw nuns that were enjoying their day out of the cloister A couple of them were wearing baseball caps on top of their habits. As far as the content, they didn’t shove Jesus down anybody’s throats, ecept for a couple Gospel readings, they didn’t shove traditional marriage. I felt it was pretty benign in that respect. I did hear the jackass that introduced him at Independence Hall who said the Church gets attacked for this or that. Criticism is not “attack”. Then, also at IH, an orchestra played a dramatic intro that the Pope didn’t seem to appreciate, however the piece of music was incongruously titled “Fanfare for the Common Man”. After the Pope left the stage, everybody thought the event was over and after the orchestra played him out, Marky Mark was trying to get everybody to come back. The city looked amazing. Walking home we were in a pretty festive crowd. Some taverns were jammed, but Planet Hollywood was almost deserted.
Oh yeah, I didn’t get my phone out in time to get a pic but the police were escorting a woman (she wasn’t handcuffed, but she was walking at a brisk pace and the cops were keeping pace two steps behind her.) She was wearing boot, a mini skirt and a furry vest. It was funny to watch conversation and jaws drop as the little procession made its way through the crowd.

I wouldn’t bet on it. Randy Rand just shelled out $250,000 to the Kentucky GOP to move their caucuses, which I doubt he’d do if he were about to bail out. Jindal’s got no campaign structure to support and would be welcomed back here in Loozyana with tar and feathers. As for Pataki, with support rounding up to zero, how much can his campaign cost? No, I think this clown car is staying full and fragrant for a while.

This mayor wants to publicize who’s on welfare and where they live

If you receive government assistance in the state of Maine, Lewiston Mayor Robert Macdonald thinks the public has a right to know about it.

In a Thursday column for the Twin City Times, Macdonald said a bill will be submitted during Maine’s next legislative session “asking that a Web site be created containing the names, addresses, length of time on assistance and the benefits being collected by every individual on the dole.”

He added: “After all, the public has a right to know how its money is being spent.”

I think I’m going to like these final days of Boehner

“All [my legislation] done over the last four and a half years with a Democrat president and voted against by my most conservative members because ‘it wasn’t good enough,’” an incredulous Boehner said before asking sarcastically, “Really?”

“This the part that I really don’t understand,” he continued before being asked if the hard liners were “unrealistic.”

“Absolutely, they’re unrealistic!” he exclaimed. “You know the Bible says beware of false prophets. And there are people out there, y’know, spreading noise about how much can get done. I mean this whole idea about shutting down government to get rid of Obamacare in 2013 — I mean, this plan never had a chance.”

I know that Virginia’s qualification requirements were so restrictive that only Romney and Ron Paul made it, and that Gingrich paid his Utah ballot fee of $500 with a rubber check.

Unfortunately, the Virginia restrictions got nerfed this year. The required number of signatures was reduced to 5,000 from 10,000 and the state was forced to follow a court ruling a couple years ago that allowed noncitizens to circulate petitions.

re: #6 Blind Frog Belly White

Unsuprisingly, there’s more to this Hamid Dabashi fellow:

en.wikipedia.org

Dabashi has described the state of Israel as “a dyslexic Biblical exegesis,” “occupied Palestine,” “a vicarious avocation,” “a dangerous delusion,” “a colonial settlement,” “a Jewish apartheid state,” and “a racist apartheid state”[17]

[…]

In September 2004, Dabashi sharply criticized Israel in the Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram, writing that:

What they call “Israel” is no mere military state. A subsumed militarism, a systemic mendacity with an ingrained violence constitutional to the very fusion of its fabric, has penetrated the deepest corners of what these people have to call their “soul.”… Half a century of systematic maiming and murdering of another people has left its deep marks on the faces of these people, the way they talk, the way they walk, the way they handle objects, the way they greet each other, the way they look at the world. There is an endemic prevarication to this machinery, a vulgarity of character that is bone-deep and structural to the skeletal vertebrae of its culture.[15]

[…]
Following Columbia University President Lee Bollinger’s statements on Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during Ahmadinejad’s visit to Columbia in September 2007 (in which Bollinger stated that the Iranian President was a “petty and cruel dictator” who lacked the “intellectual courage” to offer real answers on denying the Holocaust) Dabashi wrote that Bollinger’s statements were “the most ridiculous clichés of the neocon propaganda machinery, wrapped in the missionary position of a white racist supremacist carrying the heavy burden of civilizing the world.” Dabashi further stated that Bollinger’s comments were “propaganda warfare … waged by the self-proclaimed moral authority of the United States” and that “Only Lee Bollinger’s mind-numbing racism when introducing Ahmadinejad could have made the demagogue look like the innocent bystander in a self-promotional circus.” In addition, Dabashi wrote that when Bollinger made these comments, “Nothing short of the devil incarnate, the Christian Fundamentalist in Bollinger thought, was sitting in front of him” and that Bollinger’s “shamelessly racist” comments were “replete with racism.”[29][30]

So it’s a Streicheresque apologist of Ahmadinejad.

Overall I liked the episode more than I disliked it, but, as I’ve already written here, they got the Jenner situation completely wrong, since a lot of criticism of this privileged, rich, out-of-touch Republican woman came from progressives.

The image of the jock-like PC bros was funny though, and spot-on for certain segments of the left.

I’ve read a number of articles at Dead Breitbart’s Sinecure For The Unemployable, and in ever single case, the article itself did not support the claim made by the headline, and the articles linked to don’t support the article. It’s like two layers of removal from reality.

I conclude that nobody actually reads the articles, that instead they read only the headline and believe whatever that claims. It’s an interesting approach to propagandizing with the appearance of journalism, with a layer of deniability on top.

Nyet  Sep 27, 2015 • 2:05:05pm

Have started reading the materials of the Berne trial today. The trial officially proved that the Protocols are fake. Fascinating stuff for those interested in the topic. There were three expert reports: one from the defense, one from the prosecution and one from the judge. 2 experts declared the Protocols fake, 1 tried to defend them. That person was Ulrich Fleischhauer who was so antisemitic, that it was too much even for the Nazis!

However, Fleischhauer’s personal role at Welt-Dienst declined as Germany neared the start of World War II. Researcher Carmen Callil reports that Fleischhauer’s political radicalism was beginning to hurt the Third Reich’s international image. By 1938, she writes, “Hitler was advised that Fleischhauer was placing Germany in embarrassing positions abroad, as he was the kind of ‘anti-Semite who pretends to see a threatening Jew behind every street corner of the world and who tries to deal with the matter in a psychosis of fear and secretiveness’.”

As you can imagine, his “expert” report is not quite convincing. He starts by admitting that the Protocols are but the reworked book by Joly, but Joly, whom he tried to prove to be Jewish based merely on his surname and ties to Freemasons, allegedly wrote his Dialogues in Hell with a “double bottom” - both as a critique of Napoleon III and as a master plan of world domination for Judeo-Masons. The workings on a fanatic mind…

No shit! Nobody bats an eye when a believer tells an atheist, “You’ll have to stand before God one day!”, or the oh-so-condescending “I’ll pray for your eyes to be opened”. Proselytizing is perfectly fine, as is telling atheists we ‘deny God’ so they can do bad things with no consequence.

Personally, I see as prayer as being primarily something I do for ME, not anyone else. Most of the time, when I pray for someone else I don’t even tell them I am because I don’t feel that’s important. What’s more important is that the God I believe in know what’s on my heart and that I am concerned for the well being of not only myself but my friends, family, coworkers, etc. I can pray for people to find strength and wisdom in tough situations without begging that they be saved.

I’m not sure exactly at what point I snapped, but if I’m told how I have to respect another’s beliefs my answer now is “no, I don’t.” I respect the right in this country to hold any wacked out belief one wants, but I absolutely do not have to respect the belief or the person who holds it. If you don’t want to hear my opinion on this matter, don’t bring it up by shoving your wacked out beliefs in my face and demanding respect for them.

Alright, look. I'll prove it to you.
Is there a library around here?

73 EXT. LIBERRY OF CONGRESS - DAY 73

Secretary of Defense pulls. a book off the shelf that says,
"Extreme Science." Joe opens it. We see a woman in a G-string
seductively holding a DNA double helix model. He flips
     through it. It's all quasi-porn.

                           JOE
Hmm. Do you have any... older books?

                                                          CUT TO:

77 INT. LIBERRY OF CONGRESS - DEEP IN THE STACKS - DAY 77

Joe is poring over several ancient, yellowed, mildewed books.
Be finds one that seems like what he's looking for.

                                                     DISSOLVE TO:

78 INT. LIBERRY OF CONGRESS - READING AREA - DAY 78

The Cabinet Members are all looking at issues of "Horny
Grandmas," "Moms Who Like to go." Joe comes running out,
     excited.

                           JOE

building up in the topsoil. That's
               what's killing the plants. That's
what's causing the dust storms -
               just like the Dust Bowl!

     Beat.
                          ATTORNEY GENERAL
Yeah, that's what we were saying.
               Rauncho's got electrolytes.

Joe sees he's not going to get anywhere.

                           JOE
Okay, look. You're just gonna have

nothing to lose. Just switch all the
               crops to water.

                           14-YEAR-OLD
               Like from the toilet?

                           JOE
Okay fine. Yes, from the toilet.
Wherever you get the water, send
               that to crops!

                           SECRETARY OF DEFENSE
Okay... You don't have to have a fag
               attack.

                           14-YEAR-OLD
               Hey look! My Grandma!

The 14-Year-Old proudly holds up a centerfold (we don't see
it). Joe gets an eyeful, recoils, and quickly looks away,
     suppressing a dry-heave.

Along the lines of the video, I have a question. If I wanted to make my own model of the solar system, is there a good place that not only lists the size of the sun and planets and whatever else, but their velocities and positions on a particular day?

You can start here. Just punch in how big you want the sun to be and it calculates the sizes of the planets and their orbits to scale. Not sure about orbital velocities or specific positions, but NASA’s Solar System Dynamics site has that kind of data.

Maduro of Venezuela may do something stupid to distract from flailing economy.

The first trip to the UN’s annual gathering of world leaders has particularly high stakes for David Granger, the recently elected president of Guyana. His country’s neighbor, Venezuela, has renewed its claim that it is the rightful owner of two-fifths of the small South American nation’s territory, and is massing troops along the border.

“For the first time, Venezuela has deployed rockets, armored vehicles, armed patrol boats in the river that forms the border with Guyana, and increased its troops,” Granger told VICE News in an interview. “We have to render assurance that Guyana will be a safe and secure destination.”

Venezuela has intermittently asserted sovereignty over Guyana’s Essequibo region for more than a century, it’s once again at the top of the agenda for Venezuelan politicians, including President Nicolas Maduro.

I may be overly anecdotal when I say this. I think that there’s a certain point in wealth accumulation where you can say publicly that you belong to such-and-such faith and attend this-or-that church/mosque/synagogue while not actually belonging to any sort of religion. It’s a facade, placating the public where 85% of the population identifies as religious. I know the faithful around here at LGF are good at putting their money where their mouths are by being genuinely good people through the teachings of their faith. I don’t know a whole lot of really wealthy people who are model religious folk.
