Sunday Jam: Mike Love (Not the Beach Boys’ Mike Love), “Let It Rain”

YouTube

Years ago I actually did some recording sessions with Mike Love of Beach Boys fame, and to be honest, he was kind of a dick. So when I first saw this pop up in my YouTube recommendations I wasn’t very interested — but then I took a closer look and realized this wasn’t the dickish Mike Love, but somebody I hadn’t heard of before. And he’s great. It’s sort of reggae, but with a jazz influence and some real musicianship and creative instrumentation going on. Check it out, I think you’ll dig it; I did. Bonus: he’s from Hawaii.

There was a radio DJ in Philly who wouldn’t play stuff by certain people who were dicks. Among them, George Thorogood, Eddie Money and Led Zeppelin (Jimmie Page was the dick)

Glad he was selective. If he only played songs by musicians who weren’t dicks he’d have around four songs in heavy rotation.

re: #8 Higgs Boson’s Mate

Eddie Money seemed to have been a personal affront. George and Jimmie had something to do with them taking credit for other guy’s songs.
On the plus side, he LOVED Thin Lizzy, Jack Bruce, Jethro Tull (He would play the entire Stand Up album once a month) and Van Morrisson. oh yeah, Phil Ochs too.

Last night, when the Pope left the stage in Philadelphia, the orchestra played Beethoven’s Fifth. That was the first time I ever heard more than fifteen seconds of that piece of music. Unfortunately the crowd thought that was the end of the festivities and started leaving. I was a half mile away when Marky Mark started saying Wait! We have more performances!

Tony Glover was a late night weekend DJ in the Twin Cities in the late 60’s. He would rail about all of the songs that Led Zeppelin stole and called them original LZ songs. He hated them.

I listened to him interviewing Pete Townsend about the Tommy LP. Koerner, Ray and Glover opened for them when they played at The Guthrie Theater in Mpls.

re: #27 stpaulbear

My guy is named Rick Allen so he’s tough to Google because the drummer from Def Leppard is using the same name. He would have the 2am -6am slot and he would bring in his own stuff. I would put a cassette in my boom box and record when I couldn’t sty up anymore and listen the next morning. There was a ton of stuff he would play but the tape would run out before he came on to say the titles or performers. It took me years to figure some of them out. I got the second to last song earlier this year (Family “How high the Lie”). There’s one song left. A version of “The Viper Song” by some guy with a first name beginning with D. I still have it on tape, but the quality is going down year by year.

I mentioned recently that WXPN in Philadelphia had an 88 worst song vote, and “We Built This City” by Starship defended its title. The thing about a truly bad song is that the artist puts a lot of effort into it. “City” may actually have been not bad if it weren’t for the lyrics. Mike Love had to work hard on “Kokomo” to truly make it a bad song.

42
Charles Johnson  Sep 27, 2015 • 5:38:09pm

Man, I didn’t realize how much I was relying on PHP’s ability to reference a variable without defining it first until the upgrade to v5.6.

In previous versions you could do this without actually defining the variable:

<?php
if ($variable) {
    doSomething($variable);
}
?>

If it wasn’t defined, that if statement just returned FALSE. But now you get “PHP Notice - Undefined variable” in your error log.

It doesn’t actually cause an error and it still returns FALSE, but if you have notices enabled like I normally do, that error log starts filling up rapidly.

So now you have to write that code like this:

<?php
if (isset($variable)) {
    doSomething($variable);
}
?>

I’ve probably got hundreds of cases like this in the LGF Blog Engine code. I could just turn off notices and ignore it, but notices can be useful in other situations. So I’m slowly working my way through all these undefined variables and fixing them to not throw notices any more. Big fun.

The thing that burns me up is the demonization of these people. There are plenty of issues oozing from this entire proposed enterprise, but these poor people are being scapegoated for everything that is wrong in this country, and millions of people are either eating it up or standing by and watching it unfold. These top three GOP non-politicians will lose, but the ideas will fester. How bad will it be in 2020?

Quick, someone lend me $2 for a lotto ticket, my luck is being pushed tonight.

Been up nearly 30 hours, just got home from visiting my son at his hospital/facility. Nodded a bit so made some tea and then got going again. A bit up the road, I stopped and got a possibly nice shot of the full moon. Started driving and had two big does run out in front of me. Stand on the brakes and miss the second one by a foot or two. “Our father… “. A couple miles further up the road, this big black mass comes running out of the wood line and crosses the road right in front of me. Stand on the brakes again and miss that black bear boar by inches. This time it’s more like “Jesus H. Effin Christ, what is going on tonight!?!?”

I’m home now and going to have some supper but dang if I didn’t use up a chunk of my luck tonight!

So we round up all the undocumented emigrants and ship them back…somewhere—some of them just came through Mexico, remember. Fine. Mission Accomplished™. Then what, exactly?

They were doing jobs that Americans won’t do. Who’s going to do these jobs now? The Teabaggers who were yelling to get rid of the Ill Eagles? Don’t make me laugh.

Are we going to start “rounding up” Americans to do these jobs that aren’t getting done any more? Who gets rounded up? The homeless? The unemployed? The underemployed? People on Welfare? People on Food Stamps? Making America Great Again!

My day today…. my guests arrived to watch football. My door wouldn’t open. Not from inside or outside. Mechanism dead. I freaked. I only have one door… mostly. Since I’m in a motorehome, there is a driver’s side door but this is a truck chassis, making that door real hard to get in and out of under ideal circumstances, requiring both strength and ability to contort. One of my guests is 82 years old. We simultaneously pushed and pulled him in - yeah, it was funny… once. Not so much for a repeat exit later.

All of us worked on the door mechanism with no success. I’m about losing it cuz this is not an inconvenience, it’s catastrophic. I’ve got dogs who need to get out, one quite disabled. It’s freaking Sunday. Of course cuz Sundays and holidays are always when catastrophe strikes. It takes at least a couple of weekdays to get the RV guys here and major $$$.. I finally got my wits and thought to call a locksmith.

Happy ending thanks to my hero: Hispanic guy, very broken English, adorable, funny, and a freaking genius. He fashioned a little piece of metal something and fixed a 25 year old mechanism that not only fixed my door but saved me hundreds of bucks.

This is a guy Trump and his asshole followers want out of “their” country. I don’t want to live in their country. It would suck so bad.

re: #79 The War TARDIS

I really can’t blame him for that joke though. Philadelphia has a reputation.

It’s Philly sports fans (particularly the Eagles fans), and not the city, that have a rep. I’m a lifelong Eagles fan, and having witnessed the horror that was the 700 level at the late, not-at-all missed Veteran’s Stadium, much of it is deserved.

There was an incident with batteries being thrown at St. Louis outfielder J.D. Drew in ‘99, to the point that he had to wear a batting helmet when taking the field. He wound up in St. Louis after the Phils drafted him and he refused to sign with them. Not to justify the batteries, but that’s what caused the issue

That said: enough with the fucking Santa Claus thing. Snopes has a fairly even-handed rundown of it here. It was a one-off deal that people love to rehash because it’s a cheap, easy joke. Quite frankly, for a guy as talented as Gaffigan, it was a lazy cheap shot, bordering on hackery.

As far as Philly fans being the worst of the worst: go read the comments section of any “Why Your Team Sucks” NFL preview over at Deadspin. Again, not to excuse any boorish behavior on the part of Philly sport fans, but the attitude that other cities cop of “Well, we’re not that bad” is a load of self- denial mixed with bullshit.

Wait, there are still extant Trader Vic’s? I went to the one in Chicago, like 20 years ago and is was a relic back then/

It was located in lower level of the Palmer House hotel and was a favorite restaurant of my mother. Two of the long service waitstaff there had known me since I was a baby. About ten years after you were there, one of those waiters was retiring and my mother and I paid a special visit to the place to say goodbye during his last week.

You wouldn’t have to “round up” Americans if they would just pay a decent wage. No need to though with millions of illegals around willing to work for next to nothing.

That’s the point—they’re not going to pay a decent wage. They could have done that to begin with. They’ll pay the same wages, or maybe less, since you don’t have Americans fighting to get these jobs—they’ll have to be coerced into it. Quite possibly at gunpoint.

It was only 50 years ago that the budgets of all the southern states (before they started getting deluged with Federal money, hoovered out of the northern cities) were supplied by making sure that enough able-bodied men were in prison to hire out to work on chain gangs. Good day today, helped out on a couple of dives, basically made sure that the 4 ladies who made up the class didn’t get into any trouble or get lost. 2 of my dive buddies passed all their instructor exams and evaluations this week, so I’m happy for them.

It’s funny, in the shop I am the boss when they are helping out, but at the dive site, I’m the low man on the totem pole as a divemaster. :) I think my years as an NCO in the Army makes it easy for me to handle that however. I forgot I even tweeted this. I saw it through some intermediaries, it made me quite happy! I sent it to my sister.

Unfortunately mother nature has seen fit to pour rain down on my humble abode all day so I’m missing out on the bloodmoon. I do think that kind of sucks because my grandfather put a great love of astronomy in to me so I love things like this.

I would say something about the Nats, but (a) I don’t follow baseball that closely; (b) they’ve managed to self-destruct pretty thoroughly.

Following baseball helps keep me sane. It’s something we did when my parents and brother were alive, and we enjoyed those moments.

Was born into a Cards family, but I must say Pirates (and Cubs) are really giving us a push this year! Good for them!

Go Bucs!

Sort of a pity that the three best records in baseball will meet and eliminate two of those teams in the first 5-8 games of the playoffs.

Absolutely!

It’s hard for me to describe my feelings about baseball. It’s an amazing game, and I prefer to watch a pitchers’ duel over a slugfest. I happen to think the neatest feat in athletics is the pitcher’s delivery, especially if you get a view from the side when the camera shows a bullpen (as opposed to looking over the pitcher’s shoulder from the center field camera). Anyway in the spring there is such promise and excitement. By the summer the season has settled down into a routine, and as the summer ends you either have a crescendo if your team is in contention or a quiet fizzle as the summer turns to autumn. I think that’s pretty well captured in “Bull Durham”.

That was a fun day. One and only time I’ve gone helicopter skiing.

My friends on social media are getting excited about winter. Hence, the skiing pictures.

I get into sports when my husband does. I support when needed (The Cavs, Pirates, Penguins, and Steelers). Except Ohio State. It’s mandatory in my family. The last time I was really into a team was when The Utah Jazz were in the finals, about 18 years ago. I got so mad when they lost, I threw my cordless phone and broke it. lol

I know who they are, but the Jazz??? Was that an “anybody but Chicago” thing, as in “my second favorite football team is whoever is playing against the Cowboys”?

re: #212 SteveMcGaziBolaGate

Nope. I was a big fan. Stockton and Malone? Two of the greatest NBA players. Jerry Sloan, great coach.

SteveMcGaziBolaGate  Sep 27, 2015 • 10:08:01pm

Actually I guess a Cavalier fan would be sick of the Bulls. A funny thing about that team is the Sixers passed over Brad Dougherty because the team owner wasn’t impressed when he worked out in his driveway. I actually remember a play in the NCAA tournament when Dougherty was rejected by a 6’5” guy and knew what would happen. I thought it was funny because I once blocked a shot by Frank Brickowski (who) and I gave up about 8 or 9 inches. Best thing about basketball is the rim is only 10 feet, and a big man has to come back down to it.

SteveMcGaziBolaGate  Sep 27, 2015 • 10:09:53pm

I loved Mark Eaton. Guys would shrink when they would drive the lane. He would always look so disgusted when somebody would shoot the ball into his chest and he would still get called for a foul.

216
Jenner7  Sep 27, 2015 • 10:10:26pm

Besides, the Jazz were all we had growing up in Utah.

217
SteveMcGaziBolaGate  Sep 27, 2015 • 10:16:00pm

Didn’t Adrian Dantley play for them for a while? I could never figure out how he could get a shot off over all those trees. He wasn’t the amazing athlete Charles Barkley was, AD would somehow find a hole to shoot the ball through.

I still think the early-mid 80s were the best days of the NBA. I truly HATE the three point shot.

Just don’t get too invested in the Pirates, because the Cubs are going to knock them out in the wild card game. This Year is ‘Next Year’!
