New Poll Shows Overwhelming Opposition to Government Shutdown Over Planned Parenthood

But since when does the Republican Party care what people think?
Poll • Views: 64,443

Bad news for the GOP’s Kamikaze Caucus today, as a new national poll from Quinnipiac University shows overwhelming opposition to shutting down the government over Planned Parenthood.

Of course, this doesn’t mean they won’t try to do it anyway.

Nearly seven in 10 Americans — 69 percent — oppose shutting down the government over funding for Planned Parenthood, according to the results of a new national Quinnipiac University poll released Monday.

Just 23 percent support closing the government over the dispute. Even among Republicans, a majority of 56 percent to 36 percent opposes a shutdown due to Planned Parenthood.

oh, what a tangled we he wove:

But the arms spigot that Kissinger turned on still remains wide open. According to the New York Times, “Saudi Arabia spent more than $80 billion on weaponry last year — the most ever, and more than either France or Britain — and has become the world’s fourth-largest defense market.” Just as they did after the Vietnam drawdown, U.S. weapons manufacturing are compensating for limits on the defense budget at home by selling arms to Gulf states. The “proxy wars in the Middle East could last for years,” write Mark Mazzetti and Helene Cooper of the New York Times, “which will make countries in the region even more eager for the F-35 fighter jet, considered to be the jewel of America’s future arsenal of weapons. The plane, the world’s most expensive weapons project, has stealth capabilities and has been marketed heavily to European and Asian allies. It has not yet been peddled to Arab allies because of concerns about preserving Israel’s military edge.”

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. It’s actually heartening to see that so many people refuse to give any support to the anti-choice extremists in their efforts to shut down PP. They see through their flim flam and know how important PP is to health care for millions of women.

Baloney! To refuse to sell arms to middle eastern nations is simply to let other nations dominate the trade. We stopped arms shipments to Egypt when Morsi was turfed out and even now that we shipped them the fighters and gunship helos they ordered they’ve given the next contracts to France and Russia, respectively. The only order we got to keep was for our M1A1 tanks and that because General Dynamics and Congress threw in TUSK* upgrade kits for M1A1s Egypt already has.

There’s going to be violence there. But if we’re smart about how we handle things, we can use arms sales to gain or maintain influence.

The brainwashed fundamentalists of the xtian flavor don’t give a damn what the people want or think.

They are the annointed. They know what is best. People are just there for them to manipulate to serve god’s will.

And, being the annointed, they take Mastercard, Visa, Amex, Discover, PayPal, Cash and Bitcoin.

Later this morning, Trump is scheduled to release his “tax plan”, which if it’s like any of his other plans, including his prior musings on taxes, will be a completely inpenetrable and incomprehensible mess that is at odds with itself. He’s said that he’s going to go after hedge fund billionaires for revenues, while slashing taxes for everyone else.

There’s no way to get revenue neutral with that kind of mix. None. Mark my words on that. He can’t reduce taxes to most people and then hope to make up the balance by cutting taxes to pretty much everyone and every other corporation out there.

It’s pretty much a variation on trickle down, and it simply doesn’t work. Where Trump differs from most of the rest of the GOP is that he’s singled out a subgroup of billionaires for his ire - hedge fund types. So they get hit with higher taxes of a sort, while everyone else sees a lower tax bill. I can’t wait for someone to do a serious analysis of his plan, but it’ll result in being seen as nothing more than vaporware (like most of what the GOP produces these days).

Windy Moon

By afternoon I knew the clouds would ruin most of the images but they banded out a bit and left some beautiful moments, made it more red I think.

Back to our topic this morning, I think we should get out and push back for PP. Maybe a donation, maybe document protesters or share a story about what PP did for you or a loved one. We hear this call to action about so many issues, we get tired. But PP is really close to home for most of us. And an opportunity for those that choose their fighting issues carefully.

I was pretty much skunked by cloudy skies last night. We had a few minutes over the course of the hour before the eclipse where there were breaks in the sky so you could get shots, but the minutes before and after totality were a total loss. Totally clouded over where I was. I’ve got to sort through the pictures I did take to see what kind of results I got among a bunch of cloud draped moon shots.

The Senate isn’t the problem - the House will not produce a tax plan that is coherent. All the GOP wants to do is slice and dice federal revenues - slashing and burning revenues so as to force cuts to the federal budget.

The Senate knows that this is bad for everyone, so they’ll fight to restore things as much as possible, but the House is the source of the problem.

What I did was to set the shutter interval for 5 to 8 seconds and recompose every twenty shots or so as the moon and clouds moved. I’m sorry, I should have elaborated: It’s a good thing that the Senate won’t pass a tax bill that isn’t a compromise. Neither party has all the answers on taxes and compromise is needed for the government to function. Which is where things are breaking down over PP. Not that Planned Parenthood is itself responsible for the breakdown, because its not.

Sorry, but I detect a MBF going on. Democrats have seen the need for spending cuts and tax hikes, but the GOP, which is beholden to the nonsensical ravings of Grover Norquist, refuses to do anything but demand tax cuts in order to force still more spending cuts. Anyone who contemplates tax hikes, even on the smallest sliver of taxpayers, is derided and cast out as a RINO. Just watch how Trump’s tax plan that hits only hedge fund managers will be spun as a massive tax hike.

The GOP has sought nothing but obstructionism since 1/20/2009. They’ve refused to work with the Administration, even when the Administration coopted GOP ideas as part of his health care plan. The IM was a GOP/Heritage idea to foster personal responsibility, but the GOP decided that no health care was better than health care coverage for some.

On and on it goes, and the GOP depravity has only gotten worse. They are a know-nothing party that does just the bare minimum to keep government operations going, and even there, they’ve shown a willingness to shut it down in tamper tantrums - as in 2013, and are again threatening a shutdown over funding to PP.

I think you are correct with both your suppositions.

Anything that “darkens” the Hillary campaign will be used.

I don’t think people give enough credit to Hillary for all the crap she has to take just for being a Clinton. She has to campaign from the start with a 1,000 # weight on her back and a whole party trying anything to add more and more to that weight.

She very well could have said I am done with public life when she resigned as SOS before Obama’s second term. But here she is.

I give her credit for running just based on the fact no one gets as much political mud thrown as a Clinton. Even Jeb! manages to not be as burdened with the Bush name as Clinton. But I bet that is only because he is a Republican. Clinton knows where mud comes from. Sometimes I wonder if what drives her is she is loving messing with GOP heads and the more they toss her way, the more she wants to take it all on.

Whether you like her or not…that is some dedication.

Too bad Chuck Todd allowed her to buffalo him. The Trump Tax Plan Achieves These Goals

If you are single and earn less than $25,000, or married and jointly earn less than $50,000, you will not owe any income tax. That removes nearly 75 million households - over 50% - from the income tax rolls. They get a new one page form to send the IRS saying, “I win,” those who would otherwise owe income taxes will save an average of nearly $1,000 each.

How about principle? We haven’t learned our lesson yet. We need to stop meddling in the region. Brought us nothing but problems.

He’s getting rid of some unnamed exemptions and dedctions:

With this huge reduction in rates, many of the current exemptions and deductions will become unnecessary or redundant. Those within the 10% bracket will keep all or most of their current deductions. Those within the 20% bracket will keep more than half of their current deductions. Those within the 25% bracket will keep fewer deductions. Charitable giving and mortgage interest deductions will remain unchanged for all taxpayers.

Missouri AG finds no evidence Planned Parenthood mishandled fetal tissue

An investigation in Missouri found no evidence that Planned Parenthood’s St. Louis clinic mishandled fetal tissue or engaged in unlawful activity, Attorney General Chris Koster’s office said on Monday.

Koster’s office had launched an investigation after an anti-abortion group released videos over the summer alleging that Planned Parenthood in other states illegally sold fetal tissue.

“The evidence reviewed by my investigators supports Planned Parenthood’s representation that fetal tissue is handled in accordance with Missouri law,” Koster said in a news release. “We have discovered no evidence whatsoever to suggest that Planned Parenthood’s St. Louis facility is selling fetal tissue.”

Yes. GOPers measure a woman’s worth in her physical attractiveness. Hence Rush calling Chelsea a dog and McCain’s pathetic joke about her parents being Janet Reno and Hillary. All of the Fox newswomen are reasonably attractive women and I suppose that’s the point. To have those views told to their viewers from an attractive woman is in its own way a form of pornography.

Charlie Daniels: ‘This Phase of Our History Will Only End Well with Divine Intervention’

[…]

With the election of Barack Hussein Obama, the tacit acknowledgement of American exceptionalism came to an internationally viewed public end as Obama went around the world bowing and scraping and apologizing for America being what it is.

He berated our history, questioned our intentions and redefined our role in the world. America went from benefactor to meddler, from liberator to nation builder, from trustworthy friend to ill-intentioned acquaintance - all the while with a “What do I get out of it?” motive.

And he made no secret of the fact that he intended to bring this out of control behemoth to heel, to right the gross wrongs two centuries of capitalism has wrought, to make those who had been successful in this “unfair” system pay their “fair share” and to introduce the United States of America to the delights of European style socialism.

In his efforts to do so, as we all well know, he has doubled the National Debt, sent the demand for food stamps through the roof, exponentially increased the number of “disabled” workers on the federal dole, fostered the worst race relations since the civil rights struggle, reduced the number of fulltime workers, gave Iraq to ISIS, betrayed our only true ally in the Middle East (Israel) by signing a one-sided deal with Iran and the tale is still unfolding as to how Obamacare will effect health care - the juicier parts being withheld until he departs office in hopes of placing the blame on someone else.

lawhawk  Sep 28, 2015 • 8:56:07am

So, I pretty much called it on the Trump vaporware tax plan. Not that it takes much to be right on GOP tax plans.

It’s all trickle down, but this plan is astounding in its lack of critical information on which to score it compared to the existing tax code.

He says he’s slashing and burning the existing tax rates for everyone, including eliminating the AMT. Guess who benefits from that? If you guessed the rich, you’d be right. He’s cutting the top tax rate from 39% to 25%. Again, guess who wins with that?

He then claims that he’s going to eliminate certain deductions, but never specifies which ones. That’d be a critical part of scoring his plan.

If this was a test, he fails miserably.

But this isn’t a test. It’s platitudes that the Trump and GOP faithful will flock to because it includes magic words - tax cuts and eliminating the estate tax (though never specifying how to get to revenue neutrality on anything other than wishful thinking that cutting the corporate tax rate will bring a 1-shot windfall that eliminates inversions (even though corporate taxes are only a fraction of the income tax revenue collected by the IRS).

For the most recent year, business tax revenues were 353 billion ($353,141,112,000) versus 1.6 trillion for individual income tax ($1,614,213,171,000). Corporate taxes have become even less of a factor in recent years. In 1960, corporate taxes were a 1/3 of income tax revenue (32.8%). Today? It’s 17.6%. The tax burden is increasingly being shifted from corporations to everyone else.

GE plans to stop making engines in Waukesha
Move tied to politics likely to cost 350 local jobs

GE Power & Water says it plans to stop manufacturing gas engines in Waukesha and will move the work to Canada.

The company currently employs 350 at its Waukesha engine facility building gas engines for power generation applications.

GE plans to build a $265 million factory in Canada over the next 20 months.

The company blamed the Waukesha closure on Congress not reauthorizing the U.S. Export-Import Bank that finances the sale of industrial equipment.

“We believe in American manufacturing, but our customers in many cases require Export Credit Agencies financing for us to bid on projects. Without it, we cannot compete and our customers may be forced to select other providers. We know these announcements will have regrettable impact not only on our employees but on the hundreds of U.S. suppliers we work with that cannot move their facilities, but we cannot walk away from our customers,” John Rice, Vice Chairman, GE, said in a statement.

NASAs big press conference this morning has revealed that scientists are reporting finding liquid water molecules contained within ephemeral streaks of briny salts originating in the walls of several craters on the surface of Mars. These streaks appear during particular times over the course of a Martian year and then disappear, indicating these are happening now as opposed to being fossilized flows. Using spectroscopy from the Mars Orbiter, they identified several places in the spectra where the chemical nature of the streaks absorbed the light. They were able to identify the chemical makeup of the salts by searching for a similar absorption pattern across a variety of salt compounds.

It isn’t rivers or ponds of liquid water but it’s the first indication that there is water on Mars and the implications of that fact can be huge.

Nah. They’d just attribute it to the Divine Creator. Finding multi-cellular, mobile creatures might unsettle them, though, especially if it looked un-earthly.

the Problem with Mini-Pigs —NatGeo

Rich Hoyle, a 20-year sanctuary veteran who founded The Pig Preserve in Jamestown, Tennessee, eight years ago, says he’s seeing more rescued minis with congenital problems—such as deep recessed eyes, males born with retained testicles, and females born without an anus—because of poor breeding practices. On many rescues, the herd of 50 to 100 pigs he encounters are descended from one pair of siblings.

“These poor inbred and half-starved pigs are inundating sanctuaries,” says Hoyle. “Probably 90 percent of the so-called micro pigs”—that’s one of the mini-pig’s many nicknames; others include teacup pigs and pocket pigs—“will either be dead or in a sanctuary before they are two years old.”

LOL!!!

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said Monday that he’s far from finished as a presidential candidate.

While Paul has tumbled in the polls, he told CNN that he has no intention of taking up Donald Trump’s suggestion that he suspend his campaign.

“By no means am I finished,” he told host Alisyn Camerota on CNN’s “New Day.” “I’m just getting started.”

“We wouldn’t do all this if we were planning on dropping out,” Paul said, citing his campaign’s outreach in key voting states and on college campuses nationwide.

“I think we’ll be around just as long as Trump, if not longer,” the Kentucky lawmaker added.

Paul then argued that Trump, who is leading the polls, is not a suitable choice for the Republican presidential coronation in 2016.

“How can anyone in my party think this clown is fit to be president?” he asked Camerota. “How did we get the race for the most important office in the free world to sink to such low depths?”

re: #240 Lidane

I’ve been saying that since the “plan” came out.

It’s nearly impossible to find someone who’d end up having to pay more with Trump’s plan based on the lack of specificity about the deductions and loopholes that would be closed, but there’s not enough of either that would make Trump’s plan revenue neutral.

But the same plan would end up being a boon to rich folks, who’d see their rates drop by nearly a third. From 39.6% to 25%. Cap gains would likewise drop to 20%. Note too that there’s nothing specific that would impose higher taxes on hedge funds either. They’d benefit from the same tax cuts everyone else was.

Oh, and corporations would see big tax cuts too - as their official rate would be slashed.

They and the rich would be the big winners in the tax scheme Trump fever dreamed up.

Some caveats about the Quinnipiac poll: I couldn’t find any info about the people surveyed but I think it was showing an equal number of people blaming Obama/Democrats for a hypothetical shutdown over this issue.

Some of the Republicans who say they are opposed to a shutdown also demand that PP be defunded and feel Obama is obliged to sign a budget that does so. They are ‘objectively pro-shutdown’ while saying they are not.

In the last Quinnipiac poll, the one that purported to show Carson beating Clinton by 7 points nationally, 57% of its respondents identified as Republicans, and they were clearly oversampling land lines, so this poll may or may not mean something. Right now Q-pac isn’t on my good side.

Well, when you need to get riled up…I am pretty sure that video will do it!

It sure stunned me yesterday.

Too bad Chuck Todd allowed her to buffalo him. When she asked him if he believed PP doesn’t do real late term abortions to harvest human tissue he should have simply said he doesn’t believe they do from the information he had. That would have forced her to continue to lie or come clean. Instead by him not contesting, it comes off to the RWNJs like she sure shut up Todd, we need a hard liner that sticks to her guns and takes on those lying media types.

Chuck Todd sucks. But he will now have “MTP Daily” at 5 PM (Eastern) daily on MSNBC. More suckage. It must be popular.

Chuck Todd challenge a rightwinger? Surely you jest! Instead of saying, “Haven’t you exaggerated the PP video,” he SHOULD have said, “You’re a fucking liar, Carly.” But then, he wouldn’t have been Chuck Todd.

SPIT.

Well, just like we learned that corporations are people (my friend), we also know that money is speech. And for some, a religion.

I mean, I could almost understand the “I can’t go to my neighbor’s holiday party if he’s a lobbyist” if it wasn’t so facially stupid. The law’s been on the books for 23 years and I’m guessing there’s been a grand total of zero indictments for such a case.
