Monday Night Song: Shawn Colvin, “Hold On”

God bless your crooked little heart

One of my most-loved singers performs one of my most-loved songs, a Tom Waits composition titled, “Hold On.” This is from Shawn’s latest album, Uncovered.

They hung a sign up in our town
“If you live it up, you won’t live it down”
So she left Monte Rio, son
Just like a bullet leaves a gun
With her charcoal eyes and Monroe hips
She went and took that California trip
Oh, the moon was gold, her hair like wind
Said, ‘Don’t look back, just come on, Jim’

Oh, you got to hold on, hold on
You gotta hold on
Take my hand, I’m standing right here
You gotta hold on

Well, he gave her a dimestore watch
And a ring made from a spoon
Everyone’s looking for someone to blame
When you share my bed, you share my name
Well, go ahead and call the cops
You don’t meet nice girls in coffee shops
She said, ‘Baby, I still love you’
Sometimes there’s nothin’ left to do

Oh, but you got to hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
And take my hand, I’m standing right here
You gotta hold on

Well, God bless your crooked little heart
St. Louis got the best of me
I miss your broken China voice
How I wish you were still here with me
Oh, you build it up, you wreck it down
Then you burn your mansion to the ground
Oh, there’s nothing left to keep you here
But when you’re falling behind in this big blue world

Oh, you’ve got to hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
Take my hand, I’m standing right here
You gotta hold on

Down by the Riverside motel
It’s 10 below and falling
By a 99 cent store
She closed her eyes and started swaying
But it’s so hard to dance that way
When it’s cold and there’s no music
Oh, your old hometown’s so far away
But inside your head there’s a record that’s playing

A song called ‘Hold On’, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
Take my hand, I’m standing right there
You gotta hold on

You gotta hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
Take my hand, I’m standing right there
You gotta hold on

“Sunny Came Home” still haunts me years after its release.

Fun factoid: Shawn and I were both born in January 1956, 18 days apart.

If you pay close attention to the lyrics, it’s pretty clear Sunny’s got some nefarious plans for revenge.

Paula Cole’s “Where have All the Cowboys Gone?” was also moving in some ways, but for different reasons. That and “Sunny Came Home” got a lot of airplay.

Looking back at the Billboard Hot 100s for the late ’90s, there were a lot of great songs then.

It was a Pinto sedan delivery with trick paint. IOW, slightly less likely (before the retrofit) than a sedan to shower the occupants with flaming gasoline if rear-ended.

Utah Planned Parenthood plans to sue Governor Gary Herbert

Planned Parenthood Association of Utah sued Gov. Gary Herbert on Monday and wants a federal judge to stop his order to cut off the organization’s federal funds before it takes effect Wednesday.

“While we have always known that playing politics with the lives of Utahns is wrong and short-sighted, we have learned that Gov. Herbert’s actions are also unconstitutional,” said Utah Planned Parenthood CEO Karrie Galloway. “We aren’t going to stand idly by. We aren’t going to allow the governor to play politics with our health and our lives. We are standing up and fighting back.”

Here’s the kicker:

Utah Planned Parenthood provides reproductive health care to about 46,000 people each year. It does not participate in any program that provides fetal tissue for scientific research, according to the lawsuit.

Jeb! continues the successful R outreach to minority voters.

“…At a campaign event in South Carolina on Thursday, Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush was asked how he planned to include black people in his campaign and get them to vote for him.

Bush responded, “Our message is one of hope and aspiration.” But he didn’t stop there. He continued: “It isn’t one of division and get in line and we’ll take care of you with free stuff. Our message is one that is uplifting — that says you can achieve earned success.”

Even here, we’re sick of him. His forays into politics have not gone well.

The Robertsons spent hundreds of thousands of dollars supporting Vance McAlister in his run for Congress after Rodney Alexander quit in the fall of 2013. McAlister won, because his opponent was a Tea Party nut, Neil Riser.

Almost immediately after the election, McAlister celebrated by having an affair with one of his staffers, whom he fired once it became public. Pretty much every GOoPer in the state demanded his resignation, which he refused to do. In the general election, McAlister won 11% of the vote, which is dead-girl-AND-live-boy territory.

The kicker: The Bearded Bozos had moved on to support another Tea Party nut, Zach Dasher, who also failed to make the runoff. Not that Ralph Abraham is any great shakes, but he’s at least got better taste in allies.

(And it’s not like these Quackers were doing Jindal any good.)

I’ll bet you get some cool chicks with those chariots. “Don’t bother knockin’ when this van’s a rockin’!”

Billy Joe’s take with a twist:

“If the trailer’s rockin’ don’t come knockin’ on my door.
If you can read it’s plain to see you ain’t welcome here no more.
Ah your jackrabbit lovin’ and your drinkin’ and your snorin’ don’t work for me no more.
So if the trailer’s rockin’ then don’t come knockin’ on my door.

I thought she would be so easy to control.
I never dreamed that she would leave me standin’ in the cold.
Now the cold hard facts got me frozen in my tracks as I stand here at her door.
Because the trailer’s rockin’ a whole lot more than it ever rocked before.

I was a couch potato I just kinda laid there when we made love each night.
I was watching TV while she was working on me and now you know that ain’t right.
I didn’t have a job and I snored like a hog and I drank beer all day long.
Now the trailer’s rockin’ and somebody’s shakin’ the hell out of my home.”

The Cardinals outfielder is staying the night in the hospital with a head contusion.

I was watching the game when it happened. I’ve never seen a collision like that where one of the players simply did not move afterwards. It was truly scary and the stadium was dead quiet with everyone standing. The replay showed the knee of the centerfielder hitting the other player right in the face, knocking him out for a few minutes. As they were carting him off, he gave a little wave and I and thousands more gave a big sigh of relief.

The cinematography of Alicia & Chris trashing the rich people house was really good. Ruben Blades is chilling as Daniel Salizar. He and his wife were the bad guys in El Salvador I take it. Strand & Nick are going to be good to watch next….Cobalt refers to the similar Redeker plan from WWZ. Can’t believe it’s such a short run, next week = end.

Besides, it’s been done before, and it didn’t work. Now Kansas and Wisconsin are poster children for GOP tax policies, and the GOP still doesn’t understand their voodoo economics does not work.

I saw a launch from Canaveral while I was at Disney. I just happened to have a bad parking spot, bad enough that the hotel didn’t block my line of sight. I realized the red light on the horizon was climbing so I got my camera out and zoomed in. The setting sun lit up the exhaust trail brilliantly and I was able to see the second stage separate.
I’ve been to Kitty Hawk and had my calves sandblasted , so wear long pants. I think a more comprehensive immersion in aviation history is the National Air and Space Museum, and try to take time to visit the Garber facility, where they store and recondition the exhibits.

I read somewhere, once, that Americans have a tendency, when polled, to overestimate the percentage of Federal expenditures on “welfare” (ex- SocSec and Medicare) by a huge margin (usually guessing 20-25%, I think it’s actually less than 5%) - and have done so consistently for decades, despite accurate figures being easily available.

Americans also overestimate the amount we spend on foreign aid. These misconceptions make it easier for Republicans to sell the idea that we can lower taxes and just cut our way to prosperity.

It’s part of the conservatarian disinformation campaign — ignore the huge portion of the budget devoted to the DoD and inflate the tiny percentage assigned to so-called welfare programs, while simultaneously obscuring the fact that SS and Medicare are funded with separate payroll taxes and are technically not part of the federal operating budget.

Huckabee, Jindal, Cruz, Carson - all are grifters making money off of the masses of magical-thinking religious people lost in the mechanistic world of science.

Trump - is on an ego trip fueled by Americans who want to identify with some mythical European colonial past but who don’t want a European-like present (the Europe which is still struggling to overcome millennia of tribal nation-state warfare.)

I wish we had leaders who would openly confront this issue. The closest we had was Obama and his statement about clinging to guns and the Bible, a statement from which he later distanced himself. But he was correct in his first assessment.

OK then, how much of the budget is spent actually helping people who are struggling? Let’s just include Medicare/Medicaid, Food Stamps (SNAP), WIC and those dreaded “welfare checks” that some people like to bitch about. How much total money per year is spent on just those things? Also, just for fun, how much is spent on education per year?

Then let’s compare and contrast those numbers with just the waste and fraud in the DoD budget. No one complains loudly about that shit ever.

I’d wager it would be Marco Rubio. I know I’ve been beating this particular drum for months now, but he did scoop up most of Scott Walker’s key staff and donors when Walker dropped out, he’s got the energy and fire Jeb Bush can’t seem to muster, and no less a personage than Charles Koch weighed in on Rubio and pronounced him to be a good presidential candidate.

So if Jeb quits, look for Rubio to swipe his support. At that point, Rubio would finally have enough support that he would be able and required to take on Donald Trump directly.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area.

Saw this come over the wires:

Chucky could not be reached for comment.

Meanwhile, the House GOP is moving yet again to gut the ACA through reconciliation. They’re looking to eliminate the individual and employer mandates and the tax on medical devices. They aren’t providing any way to fill the revenue hole they leave either, so it’ll add to the deficit and likely spur reductions in access to health insurance.

This is the party of personal responsibility.
This is the party of fiscal responsibility.

Or so they keep claiming despite all facts to the contrary. They have neither personal nor fiscal responsibility. They are feckless and reckless and only heap more BS on the nation with nonsensical tax plans that shift tax burdens to those least able to afford them while the rich continue to get ever more tax breaks.

Of course, overnight my twitter feed filled up with people claiming that pundits and tax experts aren’t taking into account the economic growth that would result from Trump’s vaporware plans. That, despite the fact the plan isn’t a plan and trickle down like Trump’s is based on assumptions that have never come to pass - not the rate of growth, not the job creation, not any of it.

And when none of that materializes, they demand spending cuts that would destroy the safety net - the real goal of these know-nothings.

149

The future, which so many fear, is here:

Gene-edited ‘micropigs’ to be sold as pets at Chinese institute

[…]

BGI in Shenzhen, the genomics institute that is famous for a series of high-profile breakthroughs in genomic sequencing, originally created the micropigs as models for human disease, by applying a gene-editing technique to a small breed of pig known as Bama. On 23 September, at the Shenzhen International Biotech Leaders Summit in China, BGI revealed that it would start selling the pigs as pets. The animals weigh about 15 kilograms when mature, or about the same as a medium-sized dog.

[…]

To make the smaller, gene-edited micropigs, BGI made cloned pigs from cells taken from a Bama fetus. But before they started the cloning process, they used TALENs to disable one of two copies of the growth hormone receptor gene (GHR) in the fetal cells. Without the receptor, cells do not receive the ‘grow’ signal during development, resulting in stunted pigs.

[…]

Put simply, successful genetic “editing” ( euphemism for the old “engineering”) of pigs is just one step away from doing it on humans.

re: #145 Dark_Falcon

In a word, it’s BS.

The code is voluntary, which means that any of the members of the board can ignore it at the drop of a hat. More to the point, the place is a patronage mill for Gov Christie and Cuomo, and both have blocked true substantive reform that the legislatures of both NY and NJ have sought. They want to preserve their fiefdoms for their political allies, and that means maintaining as much of the status quo as possible. Putting a veneer of “good government” on things, as with this code of ethics doesn’t stop both governors from using the PANYNJ to do their bidding and using the agency to further their agendas - namely building roads and vanity projects instead of raising taxes (like when Christie cancelled the ARC and shifted PA funds to rebuild the Pulaski Skyway and Wittpenn Bridges for $2 billion - which likely violated SEC rules on bonding - rather than raise the gas tax to pay for the project out of NJ funds). That’s $2 billion that could go to build a new PABT or AirTrain to LGA.

On and on it goes, and both governors have no interest in doing mass transit, and are focused on car traffic to the exclusion of everything else.

And that leaves NYC metro in the lurch with an infrastructure that isn’t able to handle the strain.

(and as an aside, NY Gov. Cuomo heads the MTA, not the Mayor, so building new subways or rail lines has to go through him as well).

The naysayers even point out their own hypocritical elements:

Some researchers think that dogs or cats will be next up for genetic manipulation. Scientists and ethicists agree that gene-edited pets are not very different from conventional breeding — the result is just achieved more efficiently. But that doesn’t make the practice a good idea, says Jeantine Lunshof, a bioethicist at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, who describes both as “stretching physiological limits for the sole purpose of satisfying idiosyncratic aesthetic preferences of humans”.

Dana Carroll, a gene-editing pioneer at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, adds: “I can certainly imagine resistance to manipulating dogs, even though all of the current breeds are the result of selective breeding by humans.”

Daniel Voytas, a geneticist at the University of Minnesota in Saint Paul, hopes that any buzz over gene-edited pets does not hamper progress in developing gene-editing techniques for alleviating human disease and creating new crop varieties. “I just hope we establish a regulatory framework — guidelines for the safe and ethical use of this technology — that allows the potential to be realized,” he says. “I worry that pet mini pigs distract and add confusion to efforts to achieve this goal.”

Not ahead, just close enough that they can’t be dismissed easily.

Anybody can be dismissed easily. That’s the glory in ridicule.

If Rubio’s worried he’ll be dismissed, then he’s already out the door. He has to figure out how to respond, and not react, to ridicule. And if he can’t dish it out, he’s screwed. Because the only way to bring Trump down is to mock him, and mock the people who support him.

You’ve been around here long enough to know how ridicule works.

re: #161 Dark_Falcon

They focus on cars because they’re courting suburban voters who don’t like mass transit very much and because raising taxes to pay for mass transit is right out, at least for Christie.

They aren’t using mass transit themselves. And they think that building more roads will stop congestion (when it does the opposite as any number of studies have proven over the years). Mass transit is the only way to move that many people, and for the region to continue growing, subways and heavy rail are the only answer.

Meanwhile, the NYC subways are now seeing more and more days where 6 million rides occur.

6 million rides.

Think about that number for a moment. NYC has 8 million people living there. 6 million rides on the subway. The daily ridership is bigger than every other city in the nation.

And it’s a system straining to keep things together - it is barely able to maintain a state of good repair, because it’s got billions in backlogged work, let alone the billions more needed to do new projects.

The problem is compounded by the highest construction costs in the world, even as compared to Europe. Bring the costs down to European levels (where there are still unions at last check) and you can do more, or save more with the same amount of money. That’s where reform is critical, and no one wants to address that either - other than to demonize unions when the culprit is really the construction firms that gouge the city for the work.

It’s also that Rubio doesn’t want to peak too early. At this stage he wants to be most people’s 2nd choice, and then swoop in once the previous front runners have punched themselves out. It’s a strategy that’s got a good chance of working, too.

175
HappyWarrior  Sep 29, 2015 • 6:18:51am

Mass transit connects the burbs to the cities. In the past I would have to go a lot further to get to the DC Metro. It also lessens traffic too so I frankly don’t buy that suburbites hate MT. More accurate to say is Christie’s donors do.

Peak? Trump’s at 25-29% If Rubio sees that as a peak he’s really screwed. But don’t worry…simple attrition will bump him up enough by New Hampshire.

Because the attention and lt least part of the blame blame would necessarily shift back on the politicians who awarded the contracts in the first place. Multiple factors, including that the privatization of design and construction has meant that the agencies responsible for the work don’t have the in-house ability to design, manage, and build the projects themselves. That was supposed to mean savings to taxpayers, but the opposite has occurred.

Now, big multinational firms like Skansa, Judlau, and ACS among others are doing design build, and they get to control the various cost factors, so they use the US as a piggybank while the costs are more constrained in Europe.

Adopting European design/build cost model might save billions in construction costs - allowing more build for the buck, or saving billions on construction - or both.

European and Japanese cities are expanding subways and rail, with similar density and underground infrastructure as NYC, and yet they’re doing more with less. And I’m not even comparing with China, which is problematic in quality/subsidization/costs.

The post, from 2011, reported that the Toei Oedo Line in Japan cost $560 million per mile. The Berlin U55 cost $400 million per mile. The Paris Metro Line 14 cost $368 million per mile.

New York’s construction costs blew all of that away, the study found.

The Second Avenue Subway is coming in at $2.7 billion per mile. The 7 train extension to the far West Side? $2.1 billion per mile.

Germany, UK, and France all have unions, and all are building in dense urban cores. All are building for a fraction of the cost in NYC. If NYC could get the cost per mile down to the Japanese level, you’d get 4x the work done. We could get the entire 2d Ave done.

Paul Waldman hits the mark:

The truth behind Jeb Bush’s ‘free stuff’ remark

[…]

Let’s be clear about one thing: Bush shouldn’t be criticized for a “gaffe,” that common and tiresome genre of campaign microcontroversy in which a candidate says something in a way he wishes he hadn’t and his opponents and the media act as though he has revealed the true and hidden darkness within his soul.

This isn’t really about Jeb Bush so much as it is about the persistence of this idea, one that comes out again and again when candidates are speaking to conservatives and the topic of certain kinds of Americans comes up.

It’s not even about the size of government or the nature of the welfare state as much as it is about who benefits from government and how our ideas about those benefits are shaped by the people we think are getting them.

Whatever Bush actually believes, there’s no doubt that when many Republican voters hear about “free stuff,” they have a particular picture in their minds: poor people, probably black or brown, getting some benefit they didn’t deserve, paid for by “us,” the hard-working and upstanding Americans.

“And if you’re going to sit there and kill all these people then how come all these things would be in there?” he continues. “It’s more like a summer camp.”

“Sorry,” the stunned interviewer interrupts. “You’re telling me Auschwitz was like a summer camp?”

“Well, they had a swimming pool, a movie theater and everything else,” the Klan member insists. “You know, you don’t see in prisons today any kind of swimming pool being in the middle of the prison hall.”

“So what do you think the Jews were doing in Auschwitz?” the interviewer asks.

“Swimming,” the white supremacist replies. “And working. Because they didn’t want to do any work, and what Hitler was trying to do was he was trying to teach them to work, trying to rehabilitate them, if you will.”

“Where did you hear this?” the dumbfounded interviewer wonders.

“It’s all history,” the Klan member says.

Yeah, I don’t know about ya’ll, but when I say “not doctored,” that means the video is totally intact, warts and all. If you’re hacking “non-pertinent” bits out of the video, then you’re doctoring it.

Why are cities and counties so unwilling to hold construction firms to account? It drives me nuts and I don’t really understand it. Is it simple corruption, is it just not a ‘sexy’ issue, or is something else in play?

Corporations are not held to account for their actions for the same reason pedophiles priests are not held accountable for theirs, or ‘family values’ so-called Christians caught cheating on their spouses are not held accountable for theirs. For it isn’t just individuals that will be called into account, it is the entire faith.

Faith, whether religious or economic, is supposed to produce nothing but good in the minds of the believers. The faithful can therefore be nothing but good. If bad things are done by the faithful it cannot be the fault of the faith or the faithful. So the bad things and people are ignored and allowed to disappear into the darkness of the past.

The faith cannot fail. It can only be failed.

The problem is that the engine/emissions system as designed can’t work and meet emissions control requirements. It wouldn’t pass US emissions requirements as is, so they have to completely rework the emissions systems with a urea system, which adds complexity and weight. That, in turns, reduces fuel economy and carrying capacity (owners would lose some trunk space as well). It’s got nothing to do with the warranty.

The computer code kicks the computer into a special mode to meet emissions tests requirements, but then allows the emissions to spew forth under regular conditions. There’s no computer fix to that unless they depower all the cars so that they’re stuck running in the test mode - and that would piss off all the VW owners.

Either way, they’ve pissed off all the owners, and the fix will probably piss them off least. They’ll at least be able to retain most of the power and most of the fuel economy, but lose some trunk space.

I’m going to stick with the Penn v. Casey trimester approach, where viability is a key determining factor. If the fetus can survive outside the body, then abortions at or after that time should not be allowed.

With medical advances, the period in which abortions would be allowed will slowly wind back towards conception, but not totally. 1st trimester abortions should be legal. 3d trimester is/should be not allowed due to viability outside the womb at that gestational age. 2d trimester will depend on the science, and it is pushing the boundary.

UPDATE:
To be clear, the above limitation in 3d trimester doesn’t include the medical necessity exception, which should apply for all trimesters. If the mother’s life is at stake, a medically necessary abortion should be permissible.

“Viability” is, as you noted, a function of technology.

There was a time when newborns might not have been cared for and left to die, simply because circumstances could not allow for it. Other civilizations had different ideas of what “people” were and were not.

That argument assumes that third trimester abortions are done on a whim making laws necessary to prevent them. What that does is put women’s lives at risk in cases of medical emergency by delaying life-saving pregnancy termination to get permission from a court. There are already laws protecting live born infants. That’s enough. All other decisions must be left to pregnant women and their physicians at all points during a pregnancy.

re: #289 freetoken

There’s the medical issue of viability. There’s the theological issue of existence. There’s the religious component. And an ethical/moral component.

What strikes me most is that the GOP/anti-choice extremists have put the rights of a fetus ahead of all else - the woman carrying the fetus, the baby once it’s born, or the mother. They’ve pushed an agenda that screws the safety net for these women and children when they’re at their most vulnerable, but insist that the fetus be accorded more rights than any other member of society.

Because no other member of society is treated to an absolute right to life the way a fetus is under the anti-choice worldview. For instance, anyone who is alive and born can and is subject to the death penalty (federal and some states). So, on that basis, the right to life types are engaging in cognitive dissonance if they think that they can be pro-life for a fetus and pro-death penalty.

Please take this as a discussion point not a criticism of you or your comment.

What business is it of yours or mine or others outside the family and the doctors to worry about the status of a fetus? There is always the chance it won’t survive until birth or the birth itself. Once a living viable baby is in the world, then I think it becomes a ‘public’ concern. It is then a citizen.

And no, I am not for abortions personally. But, it is not my concern what someone else does until we have an actual citizen with a birth certificate.

And sometimes a birth certificate doesn’t even answer all the questions about citizenship. Look at Obama and “anchor babies.”

I think that point comes when it can live on its own, ie: at the end of the pregnancy, however that is accomplished.

But in no sense can a newborn “live on its own”.

In a way, you’re already accepting of centuries old customs of the Christianized West - that a newborn ought to live. For example, you do not believe (I hope) that a newborn could be an offering on a pyre or alter. So you are already different than another culture far away (in time and space.)

And more to the point, it’s not just abortion where we have to face these questions of personhood. The Schiavo case was the most publicized, and politicized, case, but everyday decisions are made about whether to make life-and-death decisions. Then there is the whole can of worms around euthanasia.

There is a world of moral decisions we have to face, and if reject the moral system of another time, we still have to come up with one of our own.

That one’s easy.

At the end of an individual human life, there seems to be general agreement among doctors, lawyers, clergy and laypeople that brain activity or lack of is how we draw the line between “human being” and “something that looks like a human being but really isn’t.” (that’s why we can do heart transplants)

I think the same criteria should apply to the beginning of an individual human life.

An anacephalic will never qualify. Ever. A healthy fetus fits the criteria probably around 21-22 weeks… but if it’s a danger to the woman whose parts it’s occupying/using, she has a right to self-defense.

I do think that at any point, if the mother’s life is in danger, her life takes precident over the child. Beyond that, though, I the definition should be solely defined by whether or not the embryo has developed to the point that it could survive outside the womb, in other words brain and organ functionality sufficient to breath and digest food. Not exactly sure where this would fit in, but the parent should be able to choose to abort for conditions like downs and spina bifida if they choose.

The old definition of the quickening as a marker worked pretty well.

Most gynecologists refer mammograms to outside radiology groups. The Mrs. sees her doc, who refers her to a radiology group that handles the test and does the reading of the scan.

That’s how most ob/gyn groups run unless they run their own equipment. This isn’t rocket science, except that the GOP actively ignores it or wants to create a false impression (which they’re doing).

It goes deeper, many of them reject the idea that the constitution protects a right to privacy. Despite many of them claiming to be advocates for “smaller government” they want the government to have the power to investigate what you do in the privacy of your own bedroom (and if you do it somewhere other than your bedroom). Basically, a government small enough to fit in your bedroom - because just as fundamentalism is the fear that someone, somewhere is having fun; social conservativism is the fear that someone, somewhere might be having sex (and enjoying it).

I know discussions of abortion can be like handling a live bomb.

Everyone is worried about when is a fetus a life and what can be done to protect that life.

As I said above, I am not in favor of abortions if it was ever a decision in my life. I have made sure it never was. Everyone should, but we don’t have ultimate control so tough decisions arise. Decisions those involved must make.

I am also not in favor of someone being able to take out a family or another person with a gun. Yet, we have guns without any controls.

When will this country show the same damn concern for life taken by guns as they are about “life’ taken through abortions?

Why did the GOP not hold a hearing regarding Sandy Hook and how the NRA could be questioned like they are questioning Planned Parenthood?

To me, those little kids and all their friends, family (extended) and teachers, etc. suffered a whole lot more than a fetus in a medical decision. Think of all the living people that were touched by that tragedy.

Yet…nothing.

Is there any comparisons to the hurt and damage caused by Sandy Hook that even compares to an abortion?

Okay, I am getting steamed now…sorry if I offend anyone, it is not my goal. I just wonder why we do what we do sometimes when it makes zero sense.

Time to log off and get settled into something I can control. Later,

My basic point was (and still is), that the Ninth Amendment provides a means for courts to identify non-enumerated constitutional rights, similar to the common law tradition in the UK. They typically rejected it because reasons (usually taking the crazy view that “rights” should be determined at the ballot box).

Right. They wrongly think that certain rights should be determined by voting. This is how they claim to be more “pro democracy” on SSM but the fact is if the right of a Christian to marry ever came up to a vote, they’d flip.

There is no scoring by which Trump’s “plan” achieves anything but massively increasing the national debt and increasing the wealth of the rich (those who would benefit most are those who would see their tax rate drop from 39.6% to 25% while their cap gains rates would drop to 20%.

Yep. Thankfully, this time it won’t work. It shouldn’t have worked with ACORN either. Progressives need to fight back and protect organizations which help poor people against Republican attacks which are completely unfounded and unhinged.

re: #421 dholmes32

Reminds me of when I got a $1200 bill from Banner Health (yes, naming names here) after spending 18 hours in their heart hospital emergency room (not even admitted) just to find out it was a flareup of acid reflux. I paid that bill and almost immediately got a request for a donation. I was like…you jackasses, go AWAY. That’s why I paid the bill!

Oh, I got a bill for over $900 for a few minutes in an ER, when they used a little rubber suction cup to take a contact lens out. !!! Paid it. Got billed $23,000 for getting rabies shots, where the state supplied the shots. Fought them on that, and got it down to a couple of thousand. Different hospitals, same ethic.
