Seth Meyers calls out the bogus charts, the constant interruptions, and the ridiculous lying from Republicans at the Planned Parenthood hearing this week. (Not a huge fan of Seth Meyers, but he nails it in this segment.)

Beautifully done. I hope Democratic candidates were watching and pound their GOP opponents into dust over this.

Yeah, I know. Wishful thinking.

They should pound, but it is against their instincts. I’m hoping someone like Carly will force the issue.

It felt like I was watching a ‘Weekend Update.’ He did a good job with that segment.

In other news - I’ve been in a days-long argument over Planned Parenthood with a Republican friend of mine and gave him lots of links to read. This just popped up on my feed, from said Republican:

The Republican party has forced me to stop identifying with them, the far right fringe has become to far out there. The Democrats and i have some very basic differences in general and their fringe on the left is as bad as the right. i guess i will change to independent for what the label is worth.

I hope I had something to do with this post (minus the MBF, of course). I’ll keep working on him.

So Alabama requires a government issued photo ID. Most of the time we’d call that our drivers license so what did the supposed party of Lincoln governor down there to? Oh he only closed the DMVs in the majority black parts of the state. Yep no racism at all in the GOP and this is just a coincidink. The GOP’s contempt for participatory democracy couldn’t be more blatant.

You know, I suppose it’s possible the Left Wing Finge is as bad as the Right Wing Fringe, but the Right Wing Fringe has successfully taken over an entire party, whereas the Left Wing Fringe largely sulks and wastes their votes on losers like Ralph Nader.

Most of what he wants is already in Canada. It’s not that I disagree with his views, I just believe his views are too left wing for the current US political/economic climate, driven by libertarian/religious fantasies as it is.

Someone should also bring up that people with guns in the military get killed all the time. These attacks rely on the element of surprise. You’re at school. You’re not expecting some gunfucker to shoot you.

Oregon law on firearms on school grounds:

Oregon has enacted legislation relating to firearms in schools. ORS 166 establishes that under certain conditions (e.g., obtaining a concealed weapons permit) an individual is allowed to carry and conceal a firearm, including in public facilities such as schools. But, Oregon courts have upheld the right of employers to set reasonable work rules, including establishing rules surrounding the carrying of weapons in the workplace. In regard to students, ORS 339 states that students are prohibited from bringing a firearm to school. If a student is found to have brought a firearm to school, then he/she is subject to a one-year expulsion. The superintendent is allowed to review each situation on a case-by-case basis and make an exception to the mandatory expulsion requirement. A student may seek enrollment in another K-12 program, but admission is at the district’s discretion.

The result of both state and federal laws is:

Students are prohibited from carrying and/or possessing firearms while on school property and face up to a one-year suspension if found to have a firearm while at school.
Members of the general public who are legally authorized to carry a concealed weapon are allowed to carry their firearm while on school property.
School districts, education service districts (ESDs) and community colleges can establish a work rule prohibiting the carrying of firearms while employees and volunteers are at work.

That applies to public schools (K-12). Since this is a community college, members of the general public who are legally authorized to carry a concealed weapon are allowed to carry their firearm while on school property.

I’d go out on a limb and say that Hoft is wrong.

Just had a chuckle on Facebook, one of my fairly wingnutty acquaintances posted something from Troy Newman about him being “trapped in the Denver airport like a man without a country” (Newman’s words). So, Australia tells a non-citizen that he can’t enter their country and OMG!!! FREEDUMS ARE UNDER ATTACK!!! But let’s kick all the illegal aliens and Muslims out of the US (regardless of citizenship) because, reasons.

Also, I love how Newman said he was trapped in the Denver airport “like a man without a country” when HE’S A CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES AND COULD HAVE WALKED OUT WITHOUT INCIDENT. It’s almost noon, I think I’m going to need a 3 V&T lunch

I used to have a job going door-to-door in various Oregon towns, so I know a few of them really well. Roseburg seemed a bit more tense than most of Oregon. The loggers felt animosity for environmentalists and so forth. Not Cliven Bundy levels of tense, but something there.

re: #63 Eclectic Cyborg

I wonder how different things would have gone down at Sandy Hook happened while Bush was in office?

Just a reminder that gun control legislation did not make it to the floor when we had Congressional majorities and Obama in the White House. Democratic voters may not be turning out because the Democratic party has become dispiriting.

Corporations aren’t really people until they’re allowed to arm themselves. The Supreme Court needs to get on that.

Great now I have to worry about an armed Tony the Tiger if I don’t eat Frosted Flakes.

They are scared of the gun lobby.

Also. Why the hell do FOUR different people from CNN have to message her? Talk about not having your shit together.

Most likely low-level producers trying to make their bones.

They’ve been taught this. Jouralism ain’t what it used to be.

Well you are what you are Steve. Don’t cry about people bringing up an actual relevant issue when your side is filled with people who blame fucking gays for shootings.

Anybody notice the First Amendment requires careful consideration of its nuances but the Second is ironclad?

I must have been born in the wrong county because I find the posing with guns by some of my fellow Americans unbelievably creepy as hell. I understand those who enjoy shooting targets for hobby or those who hunt for food but the posing with them is just creepy to me.

No you are definitely not.

That’s how it looks to me when I see people pose with their weapons especially those that have the Bible and American flag as part of their backdrop.

I still say she doesn’t know much about them but she just thinks they make her look bad ass and hot to all the wingnut men out there who fap to guns rather than rreal pornography.

re: #90 wrenchwench

I used to have a job going door-to-door in various Oregon towns, so I know a few of them really well. Roseburg seemed a bit more tense than most of Oregon. The loggers felt animosity for environmentalists and so forth. Not Cliven Bundy levels of tense, but something there.

Roseburg was tense before environmentalists even reared their fuzzy little heads. The town has been at the mercy of land speculators, then logging companies, and now international corporations that want to do who knows what. The environmentalists just gave the townies some focus.
When I was rambling, I drove straight through Roseburg after once stopping in at the wrong tavern for a cold one . A couple of the locals didn’t want me to “californicate” Oregon. Turned out that they’d never seen a hippie with a good left hook (Thanks, Dad).

Fuck your prayers, Steven Chowderhead. It’s just a useless, lazy, useless way for you to project caring that you do not feel.
