For an alleged comedian, Crowder is sofa king lame at witty comebacks.

Reset the clock!

Like clockwork, the US sees a mass shooting about once every two weeks. And every hour there are three fatalities from firearms - 2 suicide and one homicide. 24/7/365.

It adds up, but the NRA refuses to accept even the most modest of reforms to firearms purchases/transfers that would reduce the bloodshed.

In rural parts of the country, you’ll see Dems tout their NRA support yes sadly. The NRA to me are one of the scummiest groups out there. But as hard as it is to believe, the GOA- Gun Owners of America are even worse.

I don’t know. Many countries have different ideas of what a “constitution” and a “right” are. The few monarchies left of course excluded from the discussion.

The absurd thing in the US is that abstract discussions over “rights” ignores the physical reality that there are hundreds of millions of guns floating around this land, and a homicidal person has no problems finding just one out of those hundreds of millions.

Well no…….not ‘nothing’. Something like this happening in, let’s say, the House of Representatives or the Senate - then you’ll see shit get done so fast your head will swim. No joke. If something like that ever happened (God forbid), then every pol is gonna be like “fuck the NRA”.

You want to know why the NRA are shitheads? The father of the young woman who was killed in Southwest Virginia vowed that he wanted to do something about the gun laws. Their response, full of compassion for a man who just lost his daughter, “Don’t get too emotional.” Or their one board of director who blamed the pastor/South Carolina state senator for his own death since Reverend Pinckney had supported a ban on guns in churches. The gun lobby are poisonous pricks and I will celebrate the day where Wayne LaPierre, Larry Pratt, and these other extremists are regarded the same way Operation Rescue is.

Apparently only Guatemala, Mexico and Haiti have the ‘right to bear arms’ (sorta) in their Constitutions.

None come close to America in possession of firearms. In America there are 90 firearms for every 100 people.

As I’ve noted before the root of the problem is, in my opinion, religious. To the RWNJs America is a faith, firearms are the faith’s holy icons and the deaths caused by them are the human sacrifices required to keep the land pure and holy. The Incas had nothing on these people.

I didn’t mean to imply that discussions over rights are not important.

Just that the overwhelming number of guns in existence in this country is a problem even if we could ever get a USSC decision that would interpret the 2nd amendment right as a more narrow right.

If we want to reduce the access to guns in this country that will likely entail more monitoring of ownership and as well as reduction in the number of weapons that exists.

Now, I’m ok with that. But I don’t believe that is possible in today’s American political climate.

People can - and do - own firearms here in the Czech Republic, though it’s not a constitutional right.

Here’s the laws regarding firearms possession and yes, even concealed carry, which is also allowed here : en.wikipedia.org

As an American, when I look at the laws on the books here, I have no problem whatsoever with any of them. They are, in my opinion, quite reasonable.

Not sure if that’s accurate:

Oregon’s higher education board unanimously adopted a policy that will ban guns from most corners of campus life at the state’s seven universities.

The university system’s top priority is campus safety, said Jim Francesconi, member of the State Board of Higher Education, which met Friday for a regular meeting at Portland State University. “That is our job. We are just doing our job.”

No one spoke against the policy, which will immediately ban guns from classrooms, buildings, dormitories and sporting and entertainment events.

The NRA is a collateral winner in the GOPs “keep ‘em ignorant and riled up” strategy. The people who run NRA have been far more capable than the Dem leadership at shaping the narrative all along. Despite being the smartest people in the political room (///////) we have yet to learn to speak to America in ways that make sense to it. Face it; Dems are averse to speaking with the majority of Americans in ways that move that majority. We don’t have to become demagogues or bullshitters; the plain truth has the same power that enables a blade of grass to crack a concrete block.

Will Rogers told me that.

Again for the record: I own guns. I have owned guns since I was 16. I enjoy shooting and hunting. that being said…this is so fucking far out of hand, I don’t know where to even begin. At this point, gun fetishism is a religion and it cannot be bargained with or induced to compromise. Something is so fundamentally broken in this country that we are killing each other in ways that no other civilized nation could contemplate, and we cannot even take cursory steps to keep Kalashnikovs out of the hands of mentally ill people.

And that’s probably because the surrounding areas have looser gun laws; I imagine it isn’t all that hard to smuggle restricted weapons into the city limits. If we want effective gun control legislation it must be strict, uniform and national. It’s beyond time to revisit the 2nd Amendment.

The issue is whether the college system overstepped its authority as the legislature has the authority to determine firearms permissions on campus.

Some of the sites I’ve checked suggest that the campus system (including CCs) has bans, but that conflicts with state law permitting concealed carry pretty much anywhere. And I’m more inclined to trust the NCSL than other sites re: status of laws. It’s what they do.

Dangerous Devices

Possession, use, or threatened use of firearms (including but not limited to BB guns, air guns, water pistols, and paint guns) ammunition, explosives, dangerous chemicals, or any other objects as weapons on college property, except as expressly authorized by law or college regulations, is prohibited.

Possession of knives with a blade longer than 4” is prohibited.

Brandishing weapons is prohibited.

Misuse of personal defensive weapons - e.g., pepper spray, etc. is prohibited. The owner is responsible and accountable for any misuse of these devices.

From here: webcache.googleusercontent.com (cached version of the college website)

Nothing definitive, but definitely intimates that state law and college regulations would supersede.

Because he’s very smart and he didn’t want to start over every 50 years.” (More applause.)

I am sure Lawhawk will back me up on this but a lot of gun violence in New York, D.C, Baltimore, and other major Eastern cities. A lot o those guns come through Virginia which has lax laws.

The NYPD regularly reports that the majority of the firearms recovered in criminal acts in NYC are obtained in the Iron Pipeline.

Using gun-trace data provided by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the report shows that in 2009 ten states (Arizona, California, Georgia, Florida, Indiana, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia) supplied almost half the interstate-trafficked guns recovered at crime scenes.

The report also argues that the stricter a state’s gun laws are, the less likely that state is to export trafficked guns recovered at crime scenes. State reinforcement of federal penalties for providing false information when buying a gun, running background checks on buyers at gun shows, allowing local discretion to police when issuing concealed-carry permits, requiring purchase permits for handguns and allowing municipalities to set their own gun laws are all associated with lower gun-trafficking rates.

So, despite how strict the NYC laws are, the criminals are obtaining their guns in lax-law states and undermining the NY laws in the process.

Sometimes I have this thought that it would take something really tragic like an important NRA or Republican official’s child or grandchild to gun violence but I honestly don’t even think that could work. Anyone remember reading the article about the young mother whose concealed gun accidently killed her in Idaho? Her father in law who gave her the gun didn’t even think about being upset about the gun but actually blamed people who have a problem with guns for being upset about it. We all grieve in our own ways but holy shit that told me all I needed to know about that mindset.

Wingnuts love them some stories about SEAL sniper Chris Kyle (who was widely known as a complete asshole). Should we point out he was murdered by a mentally ill veteran at a fucking gun range here in America???!

I’ve pointed out that when you read about CMOH winners, a lot of them are guys who single handly managed to capture whole platoons of enemy with only one gun. The only thing you need to successfully commit a gun massacre is a gun and the element of surprise. They tested the gun fuckers’ hypothesis that people with guns would respond positively if a gun man attacked but they failed and that was with them knowing what was gong to happen.

It won’t; there aren’t enough millionaires to win any elections without the fundies and bigots. That’s why the GOP, which only really cares about redistributing the nation’s wealth to millionaires and billionaires, panders to the fundies and bigots.

Well FUCK. And What The Fuck?

So obviously one answer here is to figure out sensible gun laws and start destroying weapons that are found to be illegal, unregistered, etc. Gun buy back programs help some, but of course there is not one answer to this madness.

So the next question is what is going on with (mostly) men that they feel the only option they have left is to shoot others and then often themselves?

I have some theories, but I’m not a scholar or an expert, just an observer in a place where guns are everywhere. Something is wrong with our concept of “Manliness”, what it means to be male and how a successful guy is supposed to be and act. My husband has a friend(who I seriously cannot stand, for reasons way too long to get into now) who was in Desert Storm and also has PTSD. Everything he does has to be Man Related. Hunting, NASCAR, riding Harleys, and that is ALL he will do. He has a baby granddaughter that he barely holds or touches and when he does no one is allowed to take pictures of him with the baby because that’s pussified. And he can’t understand why his marriage is a mess, gee, I don’t know. He can’t do anything that’s not macho. He’s also a fucking bully.

There’s a sickness in our culture I think. Our entertainment is based on making everything a competition (reality TV) and making sure you fuck over the other people to win. Movies and TV are violent, lots of successful programming is based on sadistic murders and solving violent crimes. None of these things cause violence, they just are a reflection of what we’re being sold and told we want. I don’t know, I used to work with little kids as a preschool teacher. I never saw violence there, I can’t believe that’s totally our nature. Is it learned? Can there be a way to unlearn that and not be ridiculous about it? All I know is that I cry every time I see these things happen and I still don’t think the answer is to lock myself up and only leave the house armed.

Fuck Wayne LaPierre with a flaming gnarly oak-branch. The gun-nuttiest ammosexual I know (personally owns 200 guns, including 3 machine guns) actually quit the NRA because of their opposition to private sale background checks. He pronounced them “crazy” and “pro-criminal.”
LaPierre and the rest of the NRA leadership are gangsters who have found a way to monetize mass murder.

Seems more likely if it was a religiously based hate crime that the young man was a christian fundy looking for muslims to kill considering our current climate.

If this was him posting on 4chan, it’s unlikely he’s any type of a religious fundie. Could easily be an atheist, too.

Oregon Sheriff: Gun control no answer to school shooting

The Sheriff of Douglas County where the Umpqua Community College massacre claimed 13 lives has insisted gun control will not prevent “heinous crimes like school shootings”.

Sheriff John Hanlin made the claim in a letter to Vice-President Joe Biden two years ago in which he also warned he would not enforce any regulations he deemed unconstitutional.

He wrote: “This letter serves two purposes. First, to make a formal request that you NOT tamper with or attempt to amend the 2nd Amendment. Gun control is NOT the answer to preventing heinous crimes like school shootings.”

Eldest daughter, my mom and I left a restaurant in downtown Nashville during a recent visit. As we exited, a guy walked by with a pistol strapped to his hip.

Remarked to my daughter: “Oh that poor man”.
She asked, “Why?”
I replied “Because he has such an incredibly small penis”.

Conversation was deliberately loud enough that he heard us. He turned around and gave me an extremely dirty look. I just smiled back. If he wants to make me feel unsafe by walking around downtown carrying a gun he can just deal with my disrespect.

2011:
Oregon University System will not appeal court decision allowing guns on campus

“…The state’s 17 community colleges, which each has its own governing board, have various positions on guns. Some have no policies while others have barred guns with policies similar to the OUS ban that was struck down by the court.

The Oregon Community College Association has recommended they all review their policies in light of the OUS decision, said Andrea Henderson, executive director.”

I’d ask him, “Why didn’t you stop the shooter? Aren’t guns are supposed to prevent this sort of thing?”

re: #125 It’s on his hat!

I’m not even sure if my new neighbors, who have what appears to be a shrine to the 2nd amendment in their home, rise to that level of sheer paranoia. What drives it, I wonder?

It is, in my opinion, an inheritance of the Puritans. Not the ‘worry that someone somewhere might be happy’ part of it but the ‘world is a battlefield where you either stand against Satan or with him.’

The Puritans were frightened of everything and that fear has been transmitted through American culture.
