Every time I hear the “only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun” refrain from the gunfuckers I think about this recent story:

Houston police responded to a shooting call around 11:15 p.m. Saturday at a Valero gas station on Jensen Drive at Reid Street in north Houston. Officials say two men jumped another man in the gas station parking lot and took the victim’s Chevrolet pickup truck. Police say a witness then pulled out a gun and began shooting at the suspects, accidentally hitting the carjacking victim in the head.

KHOU.com

Shooter picked up the brass and fled the scene. So very glad there was a good guy with a gun there. Wonder why the shooter didn’t hang around for a pat on the back?

Florida Legislature Currently Considering Allowing Guns On Campus

TALLAHASSEE | The fatal shooting of at least seven people at an Oregon community college is now yet another example of a school shooting that both supporters and opponents of proposed campus carry legislation in Florida will point to when making their case.

The Legislature is considering measures that would allow people with concealed weapon permits to bring their firearms on public college and university campuses. Senate Bill 68 and House Bill 4001 have each passed one committee in their respective chambers, largely along party lines.

What is heartbreaking about people like this is that even if his own child was a victim in a situation like this, it wouldn’t move his empty, blackened heart one bit. In fact, he’d likely double down and buy more guns.

Like I said earlier, I live in an area where I see people open carrying and nearly everyone I know has at least one firearm, usually more. We have a hunting rifle, unloaded and I hate it being here. Why? Because I have had guns pointed at my face before. I don’t object to people owning them, but honestly, it’s got to the point that it’s become a fetish for a lot of people and those are the very people that shouldn’t be anywhere near a butter knife, let alone a gun. And after all the personal trauma I’ve experienced, I still don’t think the answer is to arm myself and be scared all the time. NOPE. That would mean the people who victimized me won. Oh Hell to the Hell NO.

According to the source close to the investigation, authorities are looking at social media posts between a person they believe may have been the shooter, and others.

The conversation happened Wednesday night on 4chan.

In it, the writer talks about planning to carry out a shooting. Others egg him on, giving him suggestions on how to do it, and the type of weapons to use.

The responses are mixed — with some users characterizing the would-be gunman as a pathetic loser. Others called him a twisted hero.

I really wouldn’t mind data mining for this type of conversation.

No one alerted law enforcement?

I think there’s a couple of things at play here. One being that most of the people on those message boards are full of bravado and not much else, except shit. The ones who are know they are and they consider it blowing off steam and strutting around more than being serious. The ones that are serious wouldn’t rat each other out, out of a sense of being kindred spirits. There’s a sickness being nurtured there, which is one of the dark sides of the internet.

It might behoove law enforcement to send in a person or two undercover in some of these places, just to monitor the goings on. They do it on other places online, no reason they couldn’t with this too, with guidelines in place (like not entrapping people, just observing the conversations more than participating, etc).

They are part of what I believe is a very widespread desire to live in an 18th-century America fantasy.

They really do believe that the likes of President Obama wants to impose some horrible tyranny on them, because, well, that belief validates their urge to live 240 years in the past.

It’s all part of the hyper-individualism, self-reliant mythos of the “American.”

To accept that in 2015 we really don’t have a “militia” like in 1776, that savages are not running wild over the hills, and so on… well, that would mean a lot of things about how they view the world are out of date.

As a kid, I read Heinlein’s “Tunnel in the Sky”. In the book, a bunch of students are given a final survival exam by being sent to a planet and expected to survive the deadly beasts and other dangers.

The main character is trying to decide what gun to take, but is advised by his sister (a skilled soldier) not to take a gun, but rather a knife. She explained that a gun can make you over-confident and would actually decrease the chances of survival, because it would change his approach. Basically, “you are the prey” and a gun make you think of yourself as a predator instead. With only a knife, you understand clearly that you are the prey and act accordingly.

The gunfuckers strut around with their guns, feeling so powerful and like a predator. But the simple truth is that being armed does very little to protect you in an active shooter situation, especially when there is little time to react to the threat. Soldiers in combat understand only too well that having a gun doesn’t make you invulnerable. I just wish the gunfuckers understood that simple truth.

More guns don’t make us safer. Period. Guns don’t magically turn you from prey into the predator, despite all the NRA talking points. And guns in the hands of idiots present more dangers to the general public than they provide safety.

I just saw Pete Williams on MSNBC ask about the security on campus. “Should there be more armed guards on campuses?”

The answer to that is “no.” Its a freaking community college, not a prison. What the hell kind of country are we in where I’m being told I need to walk around armed and vigilant when I walk into a classroom or into a movie theatre?

I don’t care if the zone I’m in is not gun free. I DONT WANT TO HAVE TO WALK AROUND ARMED 24/7 IN “THE GREATEST NATION ON EARTH”

The NRA vision of everyone in the US going around heavily armed at all times for no good reason is a hellish dystopia.

An Armed Society is a Society where a lot of people get shot.

The mother-in-law of James Pullum, one of two men who died in an apparent road-rage fueled shootout Wednesday, said her daughter and Pullum’s mother witnessed the double shooting.
The double shooting happened shortly before 7 p.m. at the Wonder Wand Car Wash at 426 S. Steele St.

Police said the 43-year-old Pullum and the other victim, 56-year-old Robert Taylor, both pulled their vehicles into the car wash after some type of road-rage incident moments earlier.

Both had permits to carry concealed weapons.

After a confrontation between the two men outside of the vehicles, they exchanged shots that ended up being fatal to both men.MLive

Yup, they were very polite. Once they killed each other.

This is the world the NRA wants. Spit.

Sheriff John Hanlin wants you to keep your stinking hands off of his 2nd Amendment.

He also wants anyone who wants background checks on gun buyers to go to hell.

Today, Senate Bill 941, legislation which seeks to expand background checks to private transfers, passed the House Rules Committee and will now head to the floor for a final vote by the full House of Representatives. This bill was voted out of Committee today in a work session after receiving more than seven hours of both invited and public testimony on Wednesday.

Opposition testimony was led by NRA, Oregon Firearms Federation, Sheriff Tim Svenson from Yamhill County, and Sheriff John Hamlin from Douglas County. Following in opposition were numerous county commissioners including Chris Perry of Wheeler County, Paul Castillia of Wallowa County, Kevin Cameron of Marion County, Stan Primozich of Yamhill County, Chris Boice and Tim Freeman of Douglas County, and Tootie Smith of Clackamas County. Several gun stores and the Oregon Hunters Association also joined with opposition testimony at the hearing.

As previously reported, SB 941 would require individuals to appear before a gun dealer to request a criminal background check prior to privately transferring a firearm, absent limited exceptions. Transfers include, but are not limited to, sales, gifts, loans and leases. Failure to comply with this mandate could result in stiff penalties and possible loss of an individual’s right to keep and bear arms.

SB 941, like many other gun control schemes, is a step towards the full registration of firearms. In January 2013, the Department of Justice said that background checks on all firearm transfers “depends on…requiring gun registration.”

Please call and email your state Representative and urge him or her to OPPOSE Senate Bill 941. Also, please forward this email to friends, family and fellow Second Amendment supporters in Oregon and encourage them to do the same.

My friend the security guard, whom I have mentioned here a number of times, was shot while off duty a few weeks ago.
I haven’t mentioned this before for fear of compromising his identity but I think enough time has passed (many shootings in Lubbock recently) and it’s important enough in the current context that I can bring it up now.
He had his Sig .357 pistol on him, as he is licensed to do. He is well trained to use it, but he didn’t have a chance in the world to defend himself. A car pulled up to him in a parking lot and without a word the driver started shooting. My friend was hit 5 times but survived. He spent two weeks in the hospital but is back home now and facing a long convalescence.
This did not happen on the job but it job related so his employers will be picking up the tab: The shooter is a punk he had apprehended trying to break into an apartment a couple of months earlier. The punk had threatened revenge and he got it. He is looking at 10 years to life as well.

re: #158 I Stand With Planned Parenthood

Historically, the left side, and subsequently left-handedness, was considered negative in many cultures. The Latin word sinistra originally meant “left” but took on meanings of “evil” or “unlucky” by the Classical Latin era, and this double meaning survives in European derivatives of Latin, and in the English word “sinister”.

Meanings gradually developed from use of these terms in the ancient languages. In many modern European languages, including English, the word for the direction “right” also means “correct” or “proper”, and also stands for authority and justice. In most Slavic languages the root prav is used in words carrying meanings of correctness or justice.

So, if you were left-handed or sinister, you were associated with evil. In time, sinister itself meant evil and threatening. EtymOnline said that sinister attained this meaning in the early 15th century. The OED supports this, writing that the first uses of sinister to mean malicious were:

1474 Rolls of Parl. VI. 110/1 Contynuyn in habundaunce of goodes and havour, to their sinister pleasure.

1477 Earl Rivers tr. Dictes or Sayengis Philosophhres (Caxton) (1877) lf. 7, Leste ye be let or withdrawen ther fro by eny sinistre or euil temptacion.

Wingnut fantasy gun myths abound it’s like some fractal expansion version of Whack A Mole. Many of those myths revolve around some imaginary cinematic invincibility that comes with weapons. Nobody beats surprise. Bad guy gets the first move by definition of defense. Guns make any punk or anger addict deadly. Victims need a break to have a chance to escape or fight. I hope he heals up okay, that’s a lot of hits.

What I’m really hating today from the post tragedy discussion out there is the gun free zone crap. As if ordinary gun carry around rambunctious kids carries no risk. As if accidents don’t happen, as if some angry kid could not ever get a gun from a guard in a sudden grab. As if etc.
