Sheriff’s Office: 3 Dead, 1 Injured in Florida Shooting

abcnews.go.com

A man in north Florida fatally shot two people, including his estranged wife, and critically injured a third before killing himself, authorities said.

Levy County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Scott Tummond said in an interview early Friday morning that the incident happened at a home in Inglis, about 50 miles from Gainesville.

Around 6:10 p.m. Thursday, the sheriff’s office began receiving 911 calls reporting shots fired, Tummond said. An EMS crew and law enforcement were dispatched.

Tummond said the EMS crew arrived first and found two men shot in the front yard of the home. One man, 68-year-old Walter S. Terhune of Inglis, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second, Otis G. Bean, who owned the home and whose age wasn’t immediately known, was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition.

Kristen Lindsey, who was a vet at the Washington Animal Clinic before being fired in April, bragged on Facebook about killing the cat, named Tiger, with a bow and arrow. The gruesome post contained a picture of a smiling Lindsey holding up a big orange-and-white tabby by the arrow embedded in the cat’s head.

The car accidents one really gets me. People aren’t using cars as instruments to kill people. With guns, they are. A gun’s sole purpose is to kill someone or something at a quick and more efficient rate. That’s why they were invented. That’s why the gun changed warfare.

Just finished watching the last part of the live presentation from Radcliff about DNA:

radcliffe.harvard.edu

Interesting stuff. The videos from all the presentations will be online in a couple of weeks supposedly.

None of it will be the subject of questions at the next GOP “debate” - unless someone sneaks a question in about evolution.

And that’s the problem. The 21st century is moving forward - in the case above, with molecular biology - but the GOP is stuck in an 18th century worldview.

The anti-GMO people are bugging me. The local free monthly hastened its journey down the tubes with an ‘article’ about the ‘hazards’ of GMOs and ‘asks the question’ of whether they could be the cause of autism. I told them to no longer be dropping a bundle of those papers every month on my shop’s doorstep. The GMO opponents are all over the political spectrum, and may lurk among the lizards, I don’t know.

Well, I’m not exactly anti-GMO, as long as the research is done properly. What I don’t want is Monsanto telling me that carpet-bombing the Midwest with RoundUp won’t have long term negative effects on the bee population.

GMOs go way beyond what Monsanto is doing. People are tying pesticide use to GMOS as though they ALWAYS go together.

Totally. The problem is that agricultural policy, including the approval of GMO products, is subject to manipulation by large corporate interests in the US. It makes it hard as a non-specialist to have any idea whether the thing that just got approved is safe or not.

re: #114 wrenchwench

This is just another example where our political discussion is AWOL because too many of the actors (mostly GOP) are trying to ignore addressing today’s and tomorrow’s issues.

As for GMO - I have no problem with the commercialization of genetic engineering (note I used “engineering” not “editing”.) What I do object to is companies trying to claim ownership of pollen that happens to drift on air or on the hairs of insects, when convenient for them, but denying responsibility of same when it is inconvenient for them.

It’s very easy for people with plenty of food around them to talk about banning food that can help feed millions of people living in famine and war torn countries. That’s what annoys me the most about anti GMO people. All genetically modified organisms are not created equal. If you want to get technical, hybrid tomatoes and roses are GMOs. They’re designed to withstand climate changes and diseases that would otherwise kill off heirloom types of the same plants. Hell, some heirlooms came from some farmer mixing a red tomato with a yellow one (my grandpa did this, btw, he never passed on the seeds or named it, he just liked the mixture of the two) or some other experiment. I guess my issue is really the paranoia about it. There’s a big deal over a golden rice right now that has vitamin A added to it and it’s a hybrid that needs less water and is tougher in bad weather. It’s going to help in countries where people are literally going blind from a lack of that vitamin, so how is it bad?

The Roundup Ready shit is another issue entirely and that gets conflated with the good side of the GMOs. It’s not at all the same.

Sheriff In Charge Of Oregon Massacre Probe Posted Sandy Hook Truther Video

The sheriff investigating a mass shooting at an Oregon community college that left at least nine people dead posted a video to Facebook in 2013 that raised questions about the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin posted a link to a YouTube video called “The Sandy Hook Shooting - Fully Exposed,” which summarized conspiracy theories surrounding the shooting and quickly racked up millions of views, about a month after the massacre took place. The post was deleted or made private sometime after 2:30 p.m. Friday.

“This makes me wonder who we can trust anymore…” Hanlin wrote. “Watch, listen, and keep an open mind.”

This guy needs to be investigated big time.

I’m not counting him out yet. The GOP’s going to effectively have a national primary between March 1 and 15 (the finalized schedule includes 27 state primaries and caucuses plus DC, PR and Guam within fifteen days, when 1,253 bound delegates- a majority of the total- will be assigned). That favors a big organization and thus a fat wallet, and Jeb*’s is still the fattest out there.

In fairness, that’s the problem with just about every area of policy today. Nor does it help that plenty of experts go through a revolving door between industries and regulatory agencies (which are often underfunded). And that those large corporate interests can form super PACs to influence elections in ways that ordinary people can’t; or just pay large sums of money for PR campaigns (see BP post Gulf spill).

Add it all of that the fact that snake oil salespersons have access to the internet to scare people with lies, damn lies, and statistics posing as pseudo-science bullshit.

One of the things that has kind of amazed me is that we haven’t seen a lot of highly touted endorsements in the GOP primary. Maybe it’s still early, but we’re only 4 months away from the first votes being cast - seems like we should have seen some by now. Chris Matthews use to say that “democrats want to fall in love, republicans fall in line.” The endorsement primary was one of the ways that republicans would fall in line. I suppose the TP revolt might have something to do with all this?

Nate Silver’s got a tracker for endorsements:

projects.fivethirtyeight.com

So far, Jeb’s in the lead with 35 “points” from three Senators and 20 Congresscretins. That would be the lowest total ever for a nominee at this point. The whole field totals just 133 points from 4 governors, 7 Senators and 58 House members making endorsements, not counting 4 House members who endorsed Perry and Walker.

By comparison, Hillary has 8 governors, 30 Senators and 112 Congresspeople all by herself.

That makes him the cream of the crop in wingnut circles, who seem to make a game of offending as many people as possible.

Jeb is the smart one is he?

Not about politics. The dude is an clumsy dullard politically

“I had this challenge as governor because we had — look, stuff happens,” he said at a forum in South Carolina. “There’s always a crisis and the impulse is always to do something, and it’s not necessarily the right thing to do.”

Exactly. This was a stupidly tone-deaf thing to say right after a mass shooting, and his defenders can only repeat “out-of-context” like parrots.

Pool Safeguards Now State Law
May 26, 2000 | By LINDA KLEINDIENST Tallahassee Bureau Chief

TALLAHASSEE — Three years after launching her battle for pool safety, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz saw her efforts become law on Thursday with the signature of Gov. Jeb Bush.

“I’m ecstatic,” said Wasserman Schultz, D-Weston. “It is tragic that because of the length of time it took, more children drowned.” […]

jaunte  Oct 2, 2015 • 3:20:54pm

And to top off the political blindness:

At the forum at Furman University in Greenville, S.C., Mr. Bush boasted of his pro-gun record as Florida governor, recalling awards he received from the National Rifle Association and noting that he once received a gun from the group’s former president, Charlton Heston

WTF? Don’t most states require a fence around a pool? Has he heard of an attractive nuisance?

“Oh, the horror! I have to pay a little bit to put a fence around my pool so children don’t die!”

Mind you, the cost of the fence is minimum compared to how much a damn pool cost.

How about if we make a gun where, if you pull the trigger, an airbag blows up in your face?
///

Also note, those are auto ACCIDENTS. 30,000 people die because cars get used improperly.

We have 30,000 people a year dying because guns are used as intended.

In the 1960’s, there were more than 50,000 people a year dying from car wrecks.

Then we passed seatbelt laws, and put in airbags, and changed what windshields are made of, and wrote stricter drunk-driving laws, car frames and side panels were redesigned, different paving materials and tire treads, and a red light here and a speed bump there, ER’s came up with new trauma treatment methods and materials, cellphones meant ambulances got to accident scenes quicker….

The population has grown by 50% in the last 50 years, but the number of auto deaths is down 40%. People still drive as much or more, we didn’t sieze all the cars, people still die, BUT NOT AS MANYAS USED TO.

Or knowing that it’s Chuck Johnson, both?

I’m trying to envision a Jeb! and Barack Obama debate.

It would not be pretty.

There most likely would be tongue-tied utterances and frustrated tears.

Barack would be fine. Might even offer a hug and a “it’ll be better Jeb, but I suggest another line of work.”

And with that…time to tune up and turn on for the Friday night guitar fry!

Later…and watch more stuff happen.

In the related articles, there’s a story a creationist that found a 60million year old fossil. And while he’s proud of his discovery, he cannot be convinced it’s that old. He’s still going to get a mold of it and put it in a creationist museum that he donates finds to.

He may be a fundy, but at least he is going the right thing and preserving it.

Many have said that if the massacre at Sandy Hook couldn’t bring rational legislation on guns, nothing can.
I think something can, something even worse. What could be worse? An incident where hundreds of people are killed, that’s what. For obvious reasons, I won’t discuss scenarios (though Hollywood has) but such a disaster is almost inevitable on our present anarchic course.

Many years ago we had employed a contractor with an option to hire. Sadly, we did not take up the hire option for unknown reasons. As his going away parting shit he sent everyone in our project team an email about the ‘Godless’ Technical Services manager and the ‘Evil’ DBA lead.

This guy didn’t burn the bridge, he nuked it.

A quick check on LinkedIn and I don’t see him on there.

Whenever CCJ pops up it just reminds me of Victor. The only difference between CCJ and Victor is that CCJ is white, and Victor hails from either Kenya or Nigeria.
