Armed Vet On UCC Campus Explains Why He Didn’t Engage Shooter

And in the process completely destroys “Gun Free Zone” and “Good Guy With Gun” argument

Thank God this man had the wherewithal and cool demeanor to determine that he only would have made a horrible situation worse.

Via RawStory:

A veteran who says he was carrying a concealed weapon on the UCC campus Thursday when 26-year-old Christopher Harper Mercer went on a murderous rampage, says he didn’t intervene because he knew police SWAT team members wouldn’t know him from the shooter.

In an interview with MSNBC, vet John Parker said he knows lots of students who conceal carry at the school because, despite a school policy that discourages weapons on campus, Oregon state law does allow it.

[…]

“Luckily we made the choice not to get involved,” he explained. “We were quite a distance away from the building where this was happening. And we could have opened ourselves up to be potential targets ourselves, and not knowing where SWAT was, their response time, they wouldn’t know who we were. And if we had our guns ready to shoot, they could think that we were bad guys.”

He also demonstrates that assumptions guys with ccw and a gun will just up and rush in making things worse are exaggerated. Of course it can happen, but we now have had a number of big shootings and robberies where ccw carry is not unusual, and nobody drew let alone fired.

What is a gun free zone anyway? Just no open or ccw? Bullshit term. If cops can roll in with guns it’s not a gun free zone. Sheesh must the advocates twist the language every freaking time?

Most of the time you can’t help, even with a gun. Defense of another particularly at any distance at all is far more problematic than backing up, taking cover and firing only if attacked directly. Speaking in broad general terms here, anything can happen but relatively few outliers will happen. Even at home the tactic is never to take it to the intruder.

Common sense and a firm grip on reality makes the “more guns” argument totally invalid. At this point I don’t think any number of bodies can make any difference in the mind set of the gun suckers. They hold on to the lie and I think in reality, they are cowards. Afraid. Scared. Terrified of “others”. Crime. The government. The very cops and troops they supposedly love and respect. They know .000001 of actual history, and just latch onto all the jingoistic catch phrases that make them feel good. We’re the greatest nation on earth and we should be armed to the teeth? There is a certain political persuasion that has fed these assholes for years, and when something happens, they lie, cheat and steal to distance themselves from who and what they created. Guns are power. Guns are truth. Guns are what cowboys use. Good guys with guns can stop bad guys with guns. We are filthy with insanity in this nation.

I just went through an argument with a guy on Facebook who said the shooting took place in a ‘gun-free zone.’ I showed him a link that says CC is jake on Oregon campuses, even quoted the ruling to him outright - and asked why he’d be carrying in the first place and why the cops gave him back his weapon and let him go home.

His response? ‘Several news outlets said it was a GFZ.’ Asked him for links, got none.

Some people just don’t want to see the light, even if you shine it right into their beady eyes.

They open carry (or concealed carry) because they can. It’s like getting an earring or a tribal arm band tattoo. Some kind of right of passage for young men. I’d almost guarantee that if you asked that vet three days ago why he carried a gun, he’d say it was for protection and so he could help respond if some nut started shooting up the town. The reality, however, is that he knows at some level that taking a gun out in an emergency situation is a great way to get killed.

It’s come in in the last couple of years - round about the time of Sandy Hook, actually, if I think about it. That’s when it started looking really grim for the gun-fuckers, so the NRA started putting out talking points about “gun-free zones” and it took off from there.

Yeah, so far, except that Texas incident where a ‘Good Guy With A Gun’ tried to intervene in a carjacking and shot the victim. Then he policed up his brass and ran like hell.

My fear is that if CCW permit holders proliferate, you’ll start getting a lot more of those incidents.

What is a gun free zone anyway? Just no open or ccw? Bullshit term. If cops can roll in with guns it’s not a gun free zone. Sheesh must the advocates twist the language every freaking time?

I also read that the Community College classrooms open to the outside, that there aren’t internal hallways. So even if it’s ‘gun free zone’ INSIDE the classrooms, that zone ends at the door. And clearly, at least one guy was carrying.

The other thing is that if you have a room full of people and one ‘Bad Guy With A Gun’, every shot of his either misses completely or hits somebody he’s trying to kill. OTOH, for the ‘Good Guy With A Gun’, any shot can hit an innocent person.

Picture the scenario - BGWAG shooting people, GGWAG draws. BGWAG can simply empty his clip in the general direction of the GGWAG without fear of hitting someone he doesn’t want to kill. If he hits the GGWAG, Bonus! GGWAG has to either wait till the BGWAG isolates himself, or risk killing bystanders, or just die in a hail of bullets.

Nearly five years ago:

Armed Giffords hero nearly shot wrong man

[…]

The new poster boy for this agenda is Joe Zamudio, a hero in the Tucson incident. Zamudio was in a nearby drug store when the shooting began, and he was armed. He ran to the scene and helped subdue the killer. Television interviewers are celebrating his courage, and pro-gun blogs are touting his equipment. “Bystander Says Carrying Gun Prompted Him to Help,” says the headline in the Wall Street Journal.

But before we embrace Zamudio’s brave intervention as proof of the value of being armed, let’s hear the whole story. “I came out of that store, I clicked the safety off, and I was ready,” he explained on Fox and Friends. “I had my hand on my gun. I had it in my jacket pocket here. And I came around the corner like this.” Zamudio demonstrated how his shooting hand was wrapped around the weapon, poised to draw and fire. As he rounded the corner, he saw a man holding a gun. “And that’s who I at first thought was the shooter,” Zamudio recalled. “I told him to ‘Drop it, drop it!’”

But the man with the gun wasn’t the shooter. He had wrested the gun away from the shooter.[…]

Jack the Ripper: has Bruce Robinson solved the world’s most famous crime?

It’s the Freemasons!

Where it led was to Robinson’s theory - he prefers the word ‘explanation’: that Jack the Ripper was not, as popular mythology would have it, a fiend or a criminal genius. ‘He was a psychopath shielded by servants of the Victorian state.’ More specifically, shielded by the fraternal bonds of Freemasonry. As much as it is about uncovering the identity of the Ripper, They All Love Jack is a scalding critique of the hypocrisy at the heart of the establishment in Victorian England, and the role played in it by Freemasonry. ‘It was endemic in the way England ran itself,’ Robinson says. ‘At the time of Jack the Ripper, there were something like 360 Tory MPs, 330 of which I can identify as Masons. The whole of the ruling class was Masonic, from the heir to the throne [Edward, Prince of Wales] down. It was part of being in the club.’

Tennessee Republican’s deranged reaction to Oregon shooting: Christians must now arm themselves

“While this is not the time for widespread panic, it is a time to prepare,” Ramsey suggested, reacting to the 294th mass shooting in America this year.

“Whether the perpetrators are motivated by aggressive secularism, jihadist extremism or racial supremacy, their targets remain the same: Christians and defenders of the West,” he declared.

Ramsey then urged Christians to get serious about their faith and “think about getting a handgun carry permit.”

“Our enemies are armed. We must do likewise,” he concluded.

Conservative.

A Cranky One  Oct 2, 2015 • 4:55:22pm

The vet and the person at the Giffords shooting understand the one simple fact that most gun-humpers don’t seem to understand. The first thing you must do is identify who the bad guy is. Unlike a combat zone where the enemy is easily identifiable, when there is a crowd of civilians how can you tell? Unless you see the person actually shooting people, the fact that they have a gun doesn’t necessarily make them the bad guy. The person who wrestled the gun away from the guy who shot Gabby Giffords is alive because the person rushing to help didn’t see the gun and shoot immediately.

And as GFBW noted, if you start shooting with a crowd around, the chances of hitting an innocent person are very high, especially if people are running around in a panic. The “good guy” that started shooting at the carjackers in Texas didn’t understand, and as a result the carjacking victim was shot in the head. Not by the carjackers, but by the “good guy with a gun”. And the “good guy” was such a coward that he collected the evidence and ran rather than face the consequences.

Hell, even in the Wild West guns weren’t allowed in many towns; they had too much experience with idiots, especially drunks, behaving badly with firearms.

Gun-humpers also refuse to acknowledge that while they may have the right to own firearms, carrying them in public places puts the people around them at risk. How many accidents happen every year when some idiot accidentally fires their gun, or drops it and it goes off, etc.. and injures someone around them. Often family members.

I resent that my safety is reduced by idiots carrying guns everywhere they go, a danger that carrying a gun myself does nothing to eliminate. So while it may not be the smartest thing to do, I’ve started speaking up and voicing my opinion to the idiots I see wearing guns in public. They have the 2nd Amendment right to own a gun. And I have the 1st Amendment right to call them asshole idiot cowards.

You could always go to your local library. Most of them have a library version of ancestry.com available. Also, if there are LDS nearby then you probably have a Family History Center not too far also, in which you can access various websites.

Local libraries are a gem in our communities and are underappreciated by a large swath of our fellow citizens. Many states have been closing down non-central archives and libraries, a shame really, all in the name of saving money.

In states other than California and NY, paerticularly in Teaxas and Arizona and Alaska, a lot of people carry. Crime is not lower. If you posit any of the worst assumptions about ccw holders, the rarity of those guys having bad incidents becomes hard to explain.

Tough part is that some guy might have been in the theater for that shooting, ran out like everyone else, happened to be unhurt and unheard from he just did exactly the right thing, his gun and permit did not entice him to play hero. Can’t prove a negative. But just about every bank robbery in Arizona or Texas has civilians with guns in range. They get involved very rarely. Why is that? Simple and straightforward. Most of them get it.

I didn’t remember that. Thanks. But it goes to the point of how to identify a “bad guy” in mass shooting situations. He heard shooting, saw a guy with a gun and assumed he could by the bad guy. As you noted, innocent people could have died without a lot of luck and a little common sense, something sorely lacking in many gun nuts.

I’m cynical enough to expect a mass shooting in the future where a gunfight erupts and a bunch of bystanders pull their guns and start shooting anyone else with a gun.

Thoughts like that would make me cranky, if I wasn’t already. ;)

Remember when Bush 41 resigned from the N.R.A. in disgust?

May 3, 1995

Dear Mr. Washington,

I was outraged when, even in the wake of the Oklahoma City tragedy, Mr. Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of N.R.A., defended his attack on federal agents as “jack-booted thugs.” To attack Secret Service agents or A.T.F. people or any government law enforcement people as “wearing Nazi bucket helmets and black storm trooper uniforms” wanting to “attack law abiding citizens” is a vicious slander on good people.

Al Whicher, who served on my [United States Secret Service] detail when I was Vice President and President, was killed in Oklahoma City. He was no Nazi. He was a kind man, a loving parent, a man dedicated to serving his country — and serve it well he did.

In 1993, I attended the wake for A.T.F. agent Steve Willis, another dedicated officer who did his duty. I can assure you that this honorable man, killed by weird cultists, was no Nazi.

John Magaw, who used to head the U.S.S.S. and now heads A.T.F., is one of the most principled, decent men I have ever known. He would be the last to condone the kind of illegal behavior your ugly letter charges. The same is true for the F.B.I.’s able Director Louis Freeh. I appointed Mr. Freeh to the Federal Bench. His integrity and honor are beyond question.

Both John Magaw and Judge Freeh were in office when I was President. They both now serve in the current administration. They both have badges. Neither of them would ever give the government’s “go ahead to harass, intimidate, even murder law abiding citizens.” (Your words)

I am a gun owner and an avid hunter. Over the years I have agreed with most of N.R.A.’s objectives, particularly your educational and training efforts, and your fundamental stance in favor of owning guns.

However, your broadside against Federal agents deeply offends my own sense of decency and honor; and it offends my concept of service to country. It indirectly slanders a wide array of government law enforcement officials, who are out there, day and night, laying their lives on the line for all of us.

You have not repudiated Mr. LaPierre’s unwarranted attack. Therefore, I resign as a Life Member of N.R.A., said resignation to be effective upon your receipt of this letter. Please remove my name from your membership list.

Sincerely,
[signed] George Bush

I have a gun free zone for real. Not even the police are allowed a gun in this place unless it’s rolling in hot on a robbery. The office at the Angeles Shooting Ranges near Los Angeles. The largest range in the county by far. Thousands of customers. No guns in the office, and no concealed guns at all. That’s the rules, even LAPD detectives give up the concealed gun at the public range. Into the car trunk or whatever. Just up the road is the private area where twenty something agencies train anyway they wish to. But not at the public facility ever.

Here’s the NRA and Conservative Reagan flip flopping all over the place back then.

the Black Panthers may not have been what the Founding Fathers had in mind when they described “a well-regulated militia” taking up arms against the tyranny of the state, but that is exactly what they represented.

78
Stanley Sea Toujours  Oct 2, 2015 • 5:38:11pm

re: #77 Stanley Sea Toujours

The Panthers sought to protect themselves and other law-abiding citizens against indiscriminate violence perpetrated by police forces. But firepower in the hands of black men was — and still is — seen as dangerous and wildly inappropriate. Unless, of course, that violence is intraracial. When black males from Baltimore to Chicago shoot each other, policymakers hardly notice. Apathy breeds inaction, and big business encourages that the status quo be maintained.

So who’s going to be the first one to join CruzCrowd, a new site where all the cool kids will be hanging.

Once users begin raising money and recruiting new members, they will earn badges, which automatically generate rewards from the Cruz Campaign store. In turn, each CruzCrowd member has the ability to track and compare their own progress against other users across their state and the nation. Badges are earned in a variety of ways (there are also several “mystery badges”). The badges themselves tell the story of the American Revolution and the drafting of the Constitution, and celebrate the brave men and women whose principled actions founded our great nation.

Users are rewarded when they accomplish the primary function - raising money

That’s why I say there is no such thing as an accidental gun discharge. If such an occurrence occurs, it’s a mandatory 10 year prison sentence and permanent revocation of firearm ownership. It just pisses me off to see how many young kids die because the parents don’t properly secure their firearm and wind up with a dead child. That was not a tragedy, that was 100% stupidity in action and totally preventable had the parents had a scintilla of knowledge of how to secure a firearm. And since states don’t seem to give a fuck about this, seems to me the Feds need to step in and drop the hammer here. We already have laws on the books that bump up the sentencing when a firearm is used when a crime is committed; it’s time we force firearm owners realize that rights are not absolute-and if you own a firearm and fail to secure it and it kills your kid-sorry about your loss, but you violated 18 USC xxxx, and for that you do time at Club Fed.

Does anyone else though remember who Bush was said to be vetting? Gore at that too. I really feel a different running mate and Gore is a shoe in.

Lieberman wasn’t a bad choice, really. Kind of a sad sack, Droopy Dog guy, but not the crazy fuck he turned out to be. No Joe Biden, though.

Gore would have done a lot better if 1) he hadn’t run away from Clinton’s record; 2) he were likeable, or even vaguely human; 3) the Press had any scruples. That ‘serial exaggerator’ stuff was largely bullshit, but it made a great story.

Of course, he actually DID win the election, unless you believe an enclave of emigre New York Jews is a hotbed of support for Buchanan.

Audible works best when you buy a membership to it. You can do anything from one “token” a month to 24 tokens once a year (best value for money, works out to about ~$10 a token - that’s what I do).

Most books cost one token.

If you’re unsure, do their free trial.

Honestly, the TV and movies aren’t a bad perk, and you get some music too. But we have it mostly for the shipping.

My Audible stuff is all mine and I adore it. At the one token a month level it’s about $15 a token, all the way down to the $10 range, and you get access to a ton of sales too. Plus if you buy an ebook then sometimes you can get the audiobook for like $4 which is a steal.

I think it’s easier if we just realized we’re all just our father’s X or Y chromosome from being the other sex. Me having that Y does not mean you are inferior to me.

Oh - the aircraft pictured is a prototype jet fighter that was intended to be carried by the B-36 as a “parasite fighter” that it could deploy for defense since at the time jets had very limited range and thus traditional escort fighters could not be expected to be available.

Money is power. Status derives from money (and other things.) A man whose wife out-earns him loses some of his power in a traditional sense.
Now, if you have a good marriage and a practical outlook, more family money is going to be a good thing, but abusive men in particular use money to keep their wife or girlfriend from leaving.
I recall hearing an interview with a counselor who spent a lot of time helping women understand that they’d actually be better off financially without their abusive guy.

Does it bother me a little as an introvert that societal constructs say I should initiate? Sure, I won’t lie, it does but I also know as a guy, I am under much less pressure to maintain my looks. I can be a little heavy and I won’t be judged harshly. I can go a week without shaving and not really feel judged.

Technology breakthroughs, especially in military equipment, often result in a sudden explosion of odd prototypes and ideas to exploit the new development area. Especially notable in aircraft, but you can also see it here and there in naval ship development and even armored vehicles.

Yes, but men have a biological incentive to father a bunch of children wherever they can, perhaps investing in raising a few of them. Women on the other hand have a much more limited reproductive capacity and have to choose the father(s) carefully. On the other hand, women do know for a fact they are a given child’s parent. Men, not so much.

Wow, that brings back memories. Grew up in a military family which meant moving a lot. Dad was stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force base for a couple of years. Got to wander around the museum many times. So many cool planes and at the time you could walk right up and touch them, peer inside and really get a sense of the beasts.

My honest opinion is that a Westgate Mall or Mumbai-type massacre will not move the gun control debate needle one iota in the United States. Violence is forever embedded in our culture. Andrew Jackson murdered many people before he was elected president. Our national anthem features bombs and rockets. The Super Bowl is the most watched event on television. There are statues, roads and schools dedicated to Nathan Bedford Forrest of Fort Pillow infamy. It saddens me that in my lifetime there will never be any meaningful gun control legislation passed. I’m a realist, and what I see is a glorification of violence in all facets of our culture. Two centuries of wanton violence and fear is a hard thing to overcome.

I’m sure it is more difficult for you, but I think the best way to develop a relationship is to find someone with similar interests-a friend-and then see if it develops into something else. Kind of a win-win, and no one really has to do a lot of initiating.

I actually did get a date a couple years back from a very assertitve women lol. It’s a funny story really. I was coming back from a musical show and I had honestly had maybe a few too many and I was worried about making the last train back home in time so I was starring at my phone nervously. Now I am sort of near sighted so I sort of squint. So I hear “What are you blind?” She immediately apologized and said it was rude but we started talking until we switched trains and she gave me her card and went our separate ways. I did call her on my lunch break the next day and asked if she wanted to meet up for drinks. We did. Never saw her after that but hey it was a date.

I sat and wondered why Bush the elder stopped short of going into Iraq. In retrospect, the man had the foresight to know not to. His kid had none. To our misfortune.

Bush Sr. mentioned all the problems that would have come from occupying Iraq in his autobiography.

The chiefest reason though is that doing so would have exceeded the limits set by the UN Security Council order that Bush was acting under. It only authorized kicking Saddam out of Kuwait. It didn’t authorize kicking him out of Iraq.

Bush Sr. was trying to make it so that the UN was a body with the teeth to enforce international law. Saddam had broken that law and needed to be put in his place. Which he was.

His son, and his cohorts, went into Iraq for exactly the opposite reason. They intended to break international law, in fact destroy it, and replace that with Pax Americana.

That must have lead to some interesting conversations at Bush family Christmas dinners.

It will be based around Coal Hill School, where Ian and Barbara taught in the Classic Era, and where Clara and Danny taught in this era.

Clara Oswald is not going to be in the show either. So, not sure who the main characters would be.

re: #319 WhatEVs

Torchwood was an excellent show. We used to watch it all the time. I think I bought some eps through iTunes. Give it a try. You’ll like it.

Some might say that Torchwood is something of an acquired taste, given its more adult-oriented and dark/gritty take on the Doctor Who universe. IMHO, seasons one and two both started okay and gradually got better, the Children of Earth season 3 miniseries was brilliant and Miracle Day (season 4 miniseries) was back to okay.

I was never really hip to the seasons until I started playing golf. Sure I knew it gets cold in winter and the sun’s up later in the summer, but I really got in tune with what turns green when, and the circle that the sun traces when things start to go downs in the sky, and then there is the fall. Also never realized that September has the best weather of the year in the Northeast.
It also seems like it takes until May for the LPGAers to break out the skorts.

Torchwood was a more adult-themed spin off. Sex and death, basically. Some good acting from a couple of the supporting cast. I think it sits out there as sort of an outlier among the Dr. Who related universe of entertainment.

We enjoyed Torchwood, watched every episode. The cast was very good.

Golfers can be absolute pigs sometimes. One day I pair up with a lady and her 5 ear old son for a few holes. We got along fine,, she kicked my ass. After they left I caught up with the group in front of us and some guy with a cigar (of course, people seem to smoke cigars on the course) asked me if that (c-word) said anything. He went home. I never got into a fight playing hockey, but three times on the golf course.

People always told me you either love Doctor Who or you hate it and I always assumed I would hate it since the few episodes I had caught were meh at best. I have since watched all of the new Who stuff, still can’t bring myself to watch the old school Doctor Who. I would go to the range with my brothers when we were kids and we’d try to hit the cart. It would be decades before I ever played golf for real, but I was such a slicer that I thought if I could just hit the ball hard enough it will come back to me. It was actually pretty awesome The ball would start straight, and then suddenly zoom dead right and it would go farther to the right then it would down the intended line. I don’t do that so much anymore, but I have still lost every golf ball I ever owned. They’re doomed from the moment I get ‘em.

One of my long ago co-workers was a dedicated golfer. He always insisted that I’d love the game if I gave it a try. One Saturday I agreed to go with him to a driving range/Par 3 course and give it a try. After hitting a couple of buckets at the range we went and teed off. I really got ahold of that ball but it stayed close to the ground rising slowly. It didn’t raise quite fast enough for one of the moth eaten flamingos hanging out at the water hazard. My ball caught that bird right on the breast bone and it expired without so much as a squawk.
So I gave up golf.

Wow is Wright-Patterson still around? I need to check that out. My sister Nancy was born there during a hellacious snowstorm when we were stationed there for a coupla months in the early sixties. I’ve got a dramatic photo of dad putting the pedal to the metal on their way to the base hospital in a jeep.

Main USAF museum is there. Three *very large* hangers of aircraft including all the big ones (B-17, B-24, B-29, B-36, B-52, B-2). Generally organized by time period.

From a photography viewpoint I don’t like the place. Under and unevenly lit in my opinion which can make good pictures impossible with simpler cameras.* And also many aircraft jammed together in such a way that photo angles are heavily limited.**

* - I took photos with a Coolpix 4-5 years ago that simply did not come out. My Nikon did fine last year however, though I had to touch up all the photos due to their darkness.

** - My pet example was the P-38 Lightning. Only possible picture angle at Wright-Patterson was head-on at the same level as the plane. (see below)

P-38 at Wright-Patterson

Compare to this shot from the Udvar-Hazy Center (Smithsonian Annex out near Dulles Airport.)

I couple of years ago a pro golfer was trying to shoot a commercial but some bird was screwing up the shot. So he said he would get rid of it. You guessed it - he nailed it on one shot and got no end of flack for it. I don’t push the game on anybody, but I would say that since I play by myself there is no shortage to the kinds of people you get paired up with at random. There was a waitress with a six pack in a cooler and got shots from the beverage cart kid and she drove her cart into a sand trap. There was a guy with one hand who would wrap a strap around the club which was attached to the stump (he was pretty good). Asian guys are pretty fun, but you know they’re talking about you in Asian.
