I love NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts because they introduce me to incredible new artists I probably wouldn’t have found otherwise. Tonight’s example is the absolutely wonderful Lianne LaHavas; as soon as I heard her start to sing I knew I had to post this video.

October 02, 2015 by SURAYA MOHAMED
In 2012, my kids introduced me to Lianne La Havas’ debut album, Is Your Love Big Enough? One play and I was hooked; I’ve been a fan ever since. Her music works for any activity, any emotion.

The first time I saw La Havas live, I was unprepared for the experience: Her music touched my heart in a way I’d never experienced before. I cried through the entire performance. Her music was that powerful, with lyrics woven together with beautiful harmonies; it pulled emotions out of me I didn’t even know existed.

La Havas is soulful yet playful, raw and vulnerable in a commanding kind of way, and her new second album, Blood, is as amazing as the first. In this Tiny Desk performance, she plays two new songs — “What You Don’t Do” and “Unstoppable” — as well as “Forget,” from her first album. She and her talented collaborators, James Wyatt on piano and Frida Mariama Touray on backing vocals, rehearsed this special arrangement during the sound check just moments before the performance. It’s wonderfully intimate, with just guitar accompanied by vocals that embellish without getting in the way. If you’re like me, you will never get enough.

Blood is available now.

I’ve been hearing her on KKXT, a music only spinoff station of NPR here in Dallas. I also get to hear a lot of local bands I would have never otherwise heard.

Right now on the Horror of Fang Rock.

In our country, this is a very famous episode, for reasons not related to the show.

The Max Headroom broadcast signal intrusion was a television signal hijacking that occurred in Chicago, Illinois, United States on the evening of November 22, 1987. It is an example of what is known in the television business as broadcast signal intrusion. The intruder was successful in interrupting two broadcast television stations within the course of three hours. The hijacker and accomplices have partially been identified after a person on Reddit in 2010 claimed he knew the people behind the incident a little while later another user stepped up to confirm the identities but the names have never been released

Later that night, around 11:15 p.m. Central Time, during a broadcast of the Doctor Who serial “Horror of Fang Rock”, PBS member station WTTW (channel 11)’s signal was hijacked by the same person, apparently, that was broadcast during the WGN-TV hijack, this time with distorted and crackling audio.

The episode of Doctor Who was interrupted by television static, to which an unidentified man appeared, mentioning WGN pundit, Chuck Swirsky, whom he says he is better than as well as calling Swirsky a “Fucking/Freaking Liberal”. The man started to moan, scream and laugh. He continued to laugh and utter various random and unrelated phrases, including New Coke’s advertising slogan “Catch the Wave” while holding a Pepsi can (Max Headroom was a Coca-Cola spokesperson at the time), then tossing the can down, leaning towards the camera and giving the finger wearing a rubber extension over his middle finger, although it was hard to see the gesture. He then retrieved the Pepsi can, and sang “Your love is fading”, before removing the rubber extension, then began humming the theme song to Clutch Cargo, pausing to say “I still see the X”, which referred to the final episode of the series, before resuming humming again. He then began to moan painfully, exclaiming about his piles (a reference to Preparation H), after which an indistinguishable flatulence sound was heard. He then stated that he had “made a giant masterpiece for all the greatest world newspaper nerds” (the WGN call letters used by the Chicago television station as well as its sister radio station are an abbreviation for “World’s Greatest Newspaper”, in reference to the flagship newspaper of their corporate parent, the Tribune Company’s Chicago Tribune). He then held up a glove and said, “My brother is wearing the other one,” and he put the glove on, “but it’s dirty! Looks like you got footprints on it!” He then threw the glove down in disgust.

The picture suddenly cut over to a shot of the man’s lower torso. His buttocks were partly exposed, and he was holding the now-removed mask up to the camera (with the rubber extension now placed in the mouth of the mask), howling, “They’re coming to get me!” An unidentified accomplice wearing a French maid outfit said to him, “Bend over, bitch!”

The accomplice then started to spank the man with a flyswatter as the man screamed loudly. The transmission then blacked out for a few seconds before resuming the Doctor Who episode in progress; the hijack lasted for about 90 seconds.[3]

WTTW, which maintained its transmitter atop the Sears Tower, found that its engineers were unable to stop the hijacker, due to the high microwave signals that the hijacker was using, as well as the fact that there were no engineers on duty at the Sears Tower at the time of the hijacking. According to station spokesman Anders Yocom, technicians monitoring the transmission “attempted to take corrective measures, but couldn’t.”[4] “By the time our people began looking into what was going on, it was over,” he told the Chicago Tribune. WTTW was able to find copies of the hijacker’s telecast with the help of Doctor Who fans who had been taping the show.[2]

The incident in question.

The lyrics to ‘Under The God,’ by the way, are eerily prescient:

Skin dance back at the condo
Skin heads getting to school
Beating on Blacks with a baseball bat
Racism back in rule

White trash picking up Nazi flags
While you was gone, there was war
This is the West, get used to it
They put a swastika over the door

Under the God, under the God
One step over the red line
Under the God, under the God
Ten steps over the crazy crazy

Washington heads in the toilet bowl
Don’t see supremacist hate
Right wing dicks in their boiler suits
Picking out who to annihilate

Toxic jungle of Uzi trails
Tribesmen just wouldn’t live here
Fascist flare is fashion cool
Well, you’re dead, you just ain’t buried, yet

Under the God, under the God
Oh yeah
Under the God, under The God

As the walls came tumbling down
So, the secrets that we shared
I believed you by the palace gates
Now the savage days are here

Under the God

He took his stage surname from Sale, according to Wikipedia, as his earlier radio name, Hines, sounded too much like the food brand.

I didn’t realize (or had forgotten) that Soupy had been on the air since the early ’50s. I knew him only from the WNEW-TV show of the mid-’60s.

As with his Glam and Eno-New Wave periods, Bowie was merely ahead of the curve. A prophet, a voice in the desert predicting the coming of Nirvana. At the time, Nirvana was toiling in Seattle obscurity, pushing its debut Bleach on Sub Pop at every dive it played.

UpChuck has posted one of his infamous ANALYSIS pieces, this time about Chris Harper-Mercer, the stealth liberal Muslim.

Some highlights —

Noting that Harper-Mercer was born in the UK:

On a dating profile he is listed as “conservative” and “Republican” but be careful here: he could just be referring to being in favor of Ireland being united.

After repeating a dubious story about ISIS taking claim for the Umpqua shootings, CCJ writes:

He also asked people their religion before killing them, which is a typical Muslim killing move.

58
Nyet  Oct 3, 2015 • 1:13:38am

From NYT:

That meeting, known as a synod, could become a showdown between liberals and conservatives. Francis has spent nearly two years trying to gradually build consensus and has repeatedly stated his desire for a more welcoming, merciful outreach — even as he has not signaled any willingness to change church doctrine.

Um, you are not supposed to change the doctrine. The doctrine is a revealed truth of God and God doesn’t make mistakes.

Now, in a practical sense we know that doctrines change and evolve. But nobody ever says “Let’s change the doctrine”.

ANALYSISISIS: What Oregon shooter was really like, using our imagination #UCCShooting #Umpqua

Being a free interpretation of the latest piece of hackery from the parody site, GotNewsDotCom.

Using our finely honed skills of digging up dirt from dead people’s social media accounts, GotNwes has been doing an analysis of the social media of Chris Harper-Mercer, the Umpqua Community College shooter.
Here’s what we gather is true, after filtering the data through our patent-pending Award Winning JournalismTM SkewMeter. And even if it’s not true, we believe it is, and so will most of our idiot followers, like @weev.

He may not have a funny sounding name, but Harper-Mercer was totally a Muslim. Forget about that Wiccan/Pagan shit he put on his dating profile. Like, he had a radical Muslim friend with a funny sounding name on MySpace. (Seriously, who uses MySpace anymore? Radical Muslims need to change with the times and switch to Tinder or YikYak).

Besides that, the father of one victim said Harper-Mercer was asking people their religion before he shot them. You know who does that? Right, you got it. Muslims! All the f-ing time. You go buy shwarma. They ask what religion you are. Then they shoot you. You go to Pita Palace for lunch. Before they give your sandwich, they ask you your religion. Bang! You’re dead! So, I avoid those places.

British Muslim has some sharp words about Saudi handling of the hajj.

Much of the poor management of the hajj stems from the actual functioning of Saudi Arabia itself. Authorities around the holy sites are clearly not allowed to make independent decisions, while members of the royal family and their guests are treated as VIPs, and therefore have no motivation to push the authorities into creating a safe and workable system.

In Mecca I saw Muslims, but I saw little Islam. I did not see compassion from our hosts, I did not see their concern for our welfare.

Ditto. English teachers are paid very handsomely in the Kingdom, but the restrictive environment does not appeal to me. China is not exactly a democracy, but it’s better than SA.

I’m thinking the whole not risking life and limb when you want to talk to a member of the opposite sex outside your family would be a more significant choice when making such a decision.

British Muslim has some sharp words about Saudi handling of the hajj.

I’m not sure there is a way to make the site of the hajj safe given the demand for access driven by Islam’s requirement for an observant Muslim to make the hajj, cheap airfares and general prosperity meaning many Muslims can now afford to visit Mecca coupled with the very much larger number of Muslims in the world today. The actual holy sites are not that large and having ten million people at a time trying to meet their religious obligations safely in an area smaller than a Superbowl stadium is difficult tending towards impossible.

Kim is the God-emperor.

All I have read about NoKorea tells me the nation will be in upheaval when Kim v.3.0 dies. The Kims have been deified, and the deaths of Kim v.1.0 and 2.0 were big shocks to the people. AFAIK, Kim 3.0 does not yet have an heir. It’s hard to say who will take his place. Probably not his sister.

Thailand has a similar problem with its royal family. The reigning king and queen are objects of worship, and his frail health may have prompted the military to take over the government. The king’s death will deeply unsettle the nation’s politics, which are already contentious.

What’s the deal with the short five day Hajj season? Is it just because that particular schedule was created by Mohammed that nobody has ever dared to extend the timeframe in which one could perform the pilgrimage?

Because that’s one of the many things about the world that I’d change if everyone just started listening to me like they should.

It’s simply an insane task in the modern world. Originally it made sense, because there weren’t even half a billion people on the entire planet when Islam was first practiced, and the fastest travel was by horseback, now there are 1.7 million Muslims alone, and they’re all required once in their lives to fly to one location during a single short window that opens up once every lunar year. It’s a logistical nightmare.

I mean, I realize this is me talking out my ass, but I don’t get why the Saudi Royal Family couldn’t get support from religious leaders for extending the Hajj to a year round event, if nothing else on a humanitarian / compassionate basis. Sure hardliners would complain, to put it mildly, but the current situation strikes me as demographically untenable and it’s only going to get worse. Something needs to be done.

You don’t get to determine for the believers how they interpret their sacred texts and traditions.

Yes, secularly speaking, these interpretations are mostly bunk. And so? No, historically speaking the Tanakh prophets did not predict Jesus and the OT verses quoted in the New Testament “obviously” refer to something/someone else. That doesn’t mean Christians must now abandon their Christianity because their interpretations aren’t sound from a secular (or Jewish) point of view. No, the Talmud sages did not receive any “Oral Torah” from the Sinai, no, their interpretations of the Torah verses are not in accordance with formal logic and sound reasoning. That doesn’t mean that religious Jews must now abandon Judaism just because it doesn’t have a firm “secular” basis. No, the Hadiths are not reliable sources on anything historically speaking, they’re an equivalent of a broken phone game with a healthy dose of fakery. That doesn’t mean that traditional Muslims must now abandon Hadiths just because it is so. And so on.

100
Nyet  Oct 3, 2015 • 3:44:12am

The Sacred Book can say “A and B”.
The traditions interpreting the Sacred Book can easily turn it into “only A, not B”, “only B, not A”, “not A and not B”.

And it’s only for the individual believer to decide which path (s)he follows. “Your Sacred Book apparently contradicts the tradition you follow, so you must follow your Sacred Book and abandon the tradition” has never been a valid argument, and if it were, most religions would be very, very different, and often not for the best. The Tradition is often seen as equal to the Sacred Book, and even more, the Sacred Book is often argued to be possible to be understood only in the light of the Tradition, only through the Tradition’s spectacles.

This is why people who suggest changing traditions (Jesus as one example) are not well received.

102
Nyet  Oct 3, 2015 • 3:55:59am

And sure, liberals should exert pressure on the traditionalist believers to adopt the interpretations that optimally correspond to the egalitarian, liberal, democratic spirit. The very interpretational plasiticity of sacred texts (and traditions) can be used to our advantage. We just shouldn’t deceive ourselves that we’re doing anything other than politics. We’re not supporting some “one true interpretation” that had somehow been forgotten or distorted. We are knowingly telling people to cherrypick their arrays of sacred knowledge for the better result.

re: #99 Nyet

re: #102 Nyet

The difference is between acting within and without. Nobody but the individual believer can act within their individual faith, decide what corresponds to it and what not. What one can do is set external parameters (acting without).

No no no, it’s up to you whether you think this or that mass event should be in this small timeframe, but fucking make sure no one is hurt. How you do it is up you, we are outsiders and won’t tell you what to believe, but we will tell you what we expect. If you suddenly find a way to increase the timeframe - great! Problem solved. If not, find another way to solve the problem. No no no, it’s up to you whether you think your Sacred Book hates red-headed people. If you think that’s the One True Interpretation, you’re entitled to it, and there’s no sense in arguing about it. But we expect you to do your job without any sort of discrimination against redheads. Oh, and if you suddenly think that maybe your Sacred Book is not that against these people (and it’s entirely up to you), attaboy, here’s pie.

Dunno if it’s that bad in case of the Vatican. Forcing them to confront the issue is useful.

In fact, that the Pope felt that some distancing from Davis was necessary, and that on the issue of SSM, of all things, shows a certain measure of progress. The only problem a Pope from 100 years ago would have had with embracing Davis would have been that she’s a dirty heretic.

Good points. In his Esquire piece, Charles Pierce wonders whether the Nuncio’s invitation to Davis wasn’t some kind of intra-church politicking. The higher-ups among the American RCC hierarchy are more conservative than Francis, he says, and they may have wanted to mess up his superstar visit to the USA. It’s speculation, but it’s plausible.

Staver and Davis took it one step further by characterizing her meeting as some kind of special, clandestine tête-à-tête between them.

Soupy was a master of the double entendre. As I mentioned much earlier, I was in High School at the time and his show was amazingly bold back then. There were other LA-local children’s shows; Engineer Bill, Sheriff John and Chucko the Clown, but Snoopy was in a whole ‘nother category.

Fun aside: Chucko the Clown was let go after showing up drunk and mouthy as a co-host, with Engineer Bill and Sheriff John, of a live telecast of the Rose Parade. Chuckles wouldn’t shut up and they disappeared him during a commercial. He had some interesting things to say before they hustled him off.

re: #90 goddamnedfrank

Comparisons to the every creeping Christmas shopping season in the US are one of the reasons my idea would not go over well. It would probably also be viewed as turning Mecca into a kind of sacrilegious Disneyland / tourist commodity. Anyway, I can’t find anybody else putting forth my idea seriously, which tells me how unlikely it is to fly.

There’s the lesser hajj, called Umrah. You get spiritual benefits from doing Umrah (I have no idea what it is), but Umrah doesn’t confer the superior spiritual bennies of hajj. However, if you’ve ever used Google Maps to look at the area around the Grand Mosque and the Haram, you’ll see it’s ringed by huge hotels. Locals complain not about Disneyfication, but about how history is being wiped off the map.

Over in Medinah, the Wahhabi-inspired Saudi religious authorities would love to get rid of the tomb of Muhammad, which is in the main mosque there, but haven’t gotten up the nerve to do it. The Wahhabis think there are too many rituals and beliefs which should be directed to Allah that are given to Muhammad. So they’re against things like celebrating Muhammad’s birthday, making pilgrimages to the tombs of Sufi saints, that sort of thing. The Wahhabis’ spiritual children in the Taliban, Al Qaeda and ISIS make a point of destroying Sufi tombs along with pagan temples.

It’s worth noting that up until right after World War I, the Jordanian Hussein ruling family had been rulers of the two holy cities, Mecca and Medina, for some time. The Saudis and British pretty much gave the Husseins the heave-ho (they got Jordan as their consolation prize) and the House of Saud took over. I’ve heard some suggestions lately that maybe the cities would be managed better by the Husseins.

My horror/scify host from childhood was Chilly Billy Cardille out of Pittsburgh. He was a local boy from up the road (literally, his parents lived about 10 miles up the road from where was born and grew up).

Philly had John Zacherle as Roland, doing the cheesy horror movie thing there until he moved the act to New York City. He later went on to be one of NYC’s first ‘underground’ DJs on WNEW-FM.

The best pairing on the Foos’ tour was the Chicago stop, which featured my boys Cheap Trick as the opening act.

They also brought over UK rock duo Royal Blood, who I like a lot. I tell people they’re the Black Keys with a mean streak, and the singer sounds uncannily like The Cult’s Ian Astbury at times.

Royal Blood - Out Of The Black (Official Video)

And the new ‘Bama Shakes album is scary good, BTW.

I think Soupy’s last stop was on WNBC in New York while Stern (and Imus) was still there, doing the slot between Imus’ morning drive and Stern’s afternoon slot. Stern’s crew used to terrorize Soupy - he had a piano in the stdio for performing songs live, and Stern’s boys used to detune it on the regular. Soupy quit in disgust IIRC.

Also, the base will never vote for him. They think he’s a traitor because of his immigration reform bill. Others dismiss him as the GOP attempt at having their own Obama, saying he’s just another inexperienced Senator with a hopey/changey story. He’s not going to win.

Really? Seems pretty simple to me - Basically a big ‘Fuck You’ to the idea that how women are attired is an excuse for rape, and that women should dress modestly so as not to inflame men, who have no ability to control ourselves in the face of scantily clad women.

The painkillers do keep the worst of the pain under control.
What’s weird is that the site of the actual fracture hurts the least (most times not at all). It’s my lower arm, upper back and thighs that hurt the most, when I sit down and get up, and get in and out of bed.

Various muscles may have been strained in the flailing and catching of yourself. My PT guy focused all the rehab on my lower body for balance and catching myself, until the last day, the last minute, he gave me some arm exercises in the do-at-home format. With my legs it had been restoring what they used to have, with my arms, it seems more like introducing them to exercise for the first time (he gave me the arm stuff because I told him I had hurt my arm throwing something.
