Not really OT because it’s a circular thing (sort of). SQUEEEEEEE:

I heard this on an internet radio station the other day. The tune is oddly compelling - I stopped what I was doing to check a couple of minutes’ worth.

Like a fellow musician (who writes some pretty forward-leaning material) said on Facebook ‘Nothing makes me feel like I’m producing boring, 20th-Century music like a new Battles album.’

Interesting about all the rain in the Carolinas is that it looks like it was brought there by a low pressure system that brought westward the precipitation from the (missing North America) hurricane:

ssd.noaa.gov

So even though the hurricane technically missed by a wide margin, the effects of the record rains still happened.

Someone told me the other day that dogs are never OT here. I second that.

What a great face that dog has. He’ll be big as a house someday.

The genetically engineered micro-pigs, the original story of which I linked a week or so ago, is finally surfacing in the general media outlets.

It’s one of those stories that is sort-of human interest in that it is about pets, and thus this story will circulate for some time, at low intensity.

The real issue is whether we ought to genetically engineer humans.

I personally have no problem with it, as long as whatever changes that are made can be shown to still result in a viable human who does not suffer any more ills than the average human already does.

But it will raise the idea that embryos are just that - cells, not “persons”.

Same with the much less adventurous nucleome transplant into a second woman’s ovum, the procedure used in the so called “three parent” babies, now available in the UK (for women with inheritable mitochondria problems.) This is not yet done in the US, to the best of my knowledge, in part because our society is controlled by an out-of-date worldview.

What if stem cells turn into embryos in a dish?

Recent studies show that pluripotent stem cells can undergo self-organized development in vitro into structures that mimic the body plan of the post-implantation embryo. Modeling human embryogenesis in a dish opens up new possibilities for the study of early development and developmental disorders, but it may also raise substantial ethical concerns.

Debate on embryonic stem cells hurts Missouri’s reputation, advocate tells Muleskinners

When Margaret Tollerton of Missouri Cures agreed a week ago to speak at Friday’s Muleskinners’ meeting, she didn’t think her topic would be one of the top political issues in the state.

Her plan, she said, was to talk about the advances in stem cell research — including the August surgery in England to cure a disorder causing blindness with embryonic stem cells — and strides being made by Missouri researchers. Politics were not on the agenda.

But that was before Democratic Attorney General Chris Koster, in response to a story in Sunday’s Tribune, challenged his Republican rivals for governor to take a stand on Missouri Right to Life’s call for a ban on embryonic stem cell research at public universities.

[…]

Missouri Right to Life opposed the amendment, which covered embryonic stem cells as well as cells derived from a technique known as somatic cell nuclear transfer, which also is used in cloning experiments. The amendment made research into cloning a human being a crime [eds: but that is not why MRtL opposed the legislation - they didn’t want any research that could lead to embryos. It’s a poor positioning of a sentence in the paragraph]

[…]

Missouri Right to Life “strongly supports ethical stem-cell investment, including state dollars, and encourages economic development that does not depend on life-ending forms of research,” the group said in a statement issued this week. “However, MRL continues to oppose human cloning and research that kills living embryos in the name of research.”

[…]

Three of the GOP candidates for governor, Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, former U.S. Attorney Catherine Hanaway and John Brunner, have said they oppose public support for embryonic stem cell research. A fourth, Eric Greitens, spoke favorably about the research, and a fifth, state Sen. Bob Dixon, R-Springfield, has not responded to Tribune inquiries. Dixon voted against restrictions as a House member in 2007.

Islamic State militants blow up ancient Arch of Triumph in Palmyra

LIBYAN RED CRESCENT SAYS BODIES OF 95 MIGRANTS WASHED ASHORE

The bodies of at least 95 migrants have been found washed ashore in Libya over the past five days, a spokesman for Libya’s Red Crescent said Sunday.

Mohamed al-Masrati said Red Crescent scouts found 85 of the corpses near Libya’s capital Tripoli and 10 near Sabartha, a Libyan coastal city that is a main launching point for smugglers’ boats headed to Europe. He says most of the deceased are migrants from other African countries and search efforts continue.

Thousands of migrants seeking a better life in Europe cast off from Libya on rickety boats, hoping to reach Italy. The International Organization for Migration says that more than 2,600 migrants have died in 2015 so far on the Central Mediterranean route that includes Libya.

I mean, there have always been extreme Muslims just like any other group has extremists, but seeing as how Islam has been around for 1400+ years you’d think people would wonder why it is that NOW these historical things need to be blown up. Okay, so one guy 800+ years ago out of lord only knows how many rulers over 14 centuries, and he couldn’t even get enough people to support his effort to get it done.

Which still kinda supports my point that doing that sort of thing isn’t normal since, historically speaking, it hasn’t been standard procedure for Muslim rulers.

Keeping in mind recent events, the racist right has a troll narrative to drive.

Shaun King was a recent target of theirs: a BLM activist, mixed race, identifies as black but looks somewhat white, an opportunity to tarnish by comparing to Rachel Dolezal.

Chris Harper-Mercer is mixed race, looks somewhat white, yet seems to identify with conservatism. But they’ve already tried to tie him to BLM, blackness, and I’ve even heard him called a Democrat.

The parallels are not to be dismissed. This is an opportunity to warp many narratives and they’re trying pretty hard. The goal is not to make any sense in a cohesive blend of narratives: it’s to cloud various discussions with a bunch of nonsense.

Jim Hoft is lying again, using “Conservative Treehouse” (a barely concealed white supremacist site) as a source:

I haven’t found a single CNN source that has the “whitened” image yet, and I’ve now looked through a couple dozen videos. I’m almost ready to publicly call him out on another blatantly dishonest post.

They had to Photoshop out his moles? White people don’t have moles? Say what you will about CNN—and I do—they’re a little more skillful than that.

I managed to take a shower today (with much essential help from MrBWS before he left for the week).
AND, I was able to get the coffee set up for tomorrow morning (with minimal spillage of water in the process).
Pain levels are considerably lower today…I can get up from my chair without wincing and was able to get all of my newspaper work done in the usual amount of time, despite typing with only my left hand.

So in 1204 their technology was behind that of ancient Egypt circa 2500 BC? I’m gonna guess they lacked the manpower, money, and time. No one has tried to take them down since then, have they? I mean like the Muslim Brotherhood with access to the invention of modern high explosives, etc.

BINGO! That’s it right there—I suspect they do it for the publicity, not out of any deeply held religious convictions. I doubt even the MB would do it as they’d most likely be hated for it by fellow Egyptians. Assholes like IS, BH, and the Taliban are another matter, they’re like the effing honey badgers of Islamists.

Is this them reacting to the mess they have on their hands and they see Carly as the best of the “outsiders” and the best anti-Hillary choice over the likes of Trump and Carson?

It is surely would be a signal they do not believe in party regulars/established types. And if that is the case what a sting to the party leadership.

Fiorina may be their choice simply because she’s the most amoral and fact-averse GOP candidate. They have standards, ya’ know.

The publicity seems to be worth more to them. They know that terrorizing & killing fellow Muslims to the point that they flee for their lives mostly just annoys the West (because of refugees), whereas destroying world cultural heritage sites is truly evil and and causes more outrage.

Actually none of the GOP candidates actually being elected is a desirable outcome. What keeps me up at night is the GOP controlling both houses and the Presidency, at which point, I’ll start the process of emigrating before they finish tearing the whole thing down. Although letting them have complete control for 4 years might be enough to make the rest of the country realize they have nothing to offer. If Kansas and Wisconsin wasn’t enough of a wakeup call, they need to have everything go to hell.

W.C. Fields’ advice, “Never give a sucker an even break and never smarten up a chump,” pretty much sums up the current situation. The GOP will never give the suckers an even break and those suckers will keep coming back because the media is vested in not smartening them up.

Anyone who thinks that the antics of the GOP’s candidates makes the election a slam dunk for Democrats is whistling past the graveyard. Their antics have gained them the Congress already.
