Video: Ted Cruz Badgers Sierra Club President With Bogus Climate Change Denial Talking Points

Deliberate misrepresentation from the Republican Senator
Politics • Views: 51,581

YouTube

This has to be one of the most annoying videos I’ve seen so far this week, as Sen. Ted Cruz reels off one anti-science climate change denial talking point after another, trying to trick Sierra Club president Aaron Mair into suggesting the science of climate change is “debatable,” and that he should agree to “issue a retraction.”

Cruz repeats over and over that “satellite data” shows there has been no warming for the past 18 years; he’s simply wrong about that. This is a deniers’ talking point that they’ve been repeating endlessly on right wing blogs and media, and it’s utterly false. They focus on satellite data because it’s easy to misrepresent. Here’s an excellent explanation of the deliberate distortion behind these false claims: Desperate for a “Pause.”

The latest incarnation claims that there’s been no global warming for 18 years and 5 months, meaning all the way back to the beginning of 1997. Let’s look at temperature data for the lower troposphere ourselves. But instead of the satellite data, let’s look at temperature data from actual thermometers. The satellites are great, but they measure microwave brightness, not temperature — we have to deduce how hot it is from the microwave data. That’s an extremely complex problem, and splicing together all the records from all the different satellites (there have been many) is a delicate issue. All of which is part of the reason the different groups doing so don’t agree on exactly how, or what the result is, and so often the satellite temperature data have been adjusted and revised.

For decades various organizations have been sending thermometers (and other weather instruments) up in balloons to measure the conditions at altitudes throughout the atmosphere. This has enabled us to combine the results from the long history of balloon-borne data into estimates of the temperature in earth’s troposphere.

And here’s what that balloon temperature data shows:

That’s right; there’s no “pause” at all. This is what every graph produced from real scientific data shows.

Every point Cruz makes about climate science in this frustrating video is bogus and dishonest. Mair refuses to fall into Cruz’s traps, but of course Ted Cruz declares victory anyway because that’s what Republicans always do.

Cruz of course makes a direct connection between accepting what 97% of climate scientists think about anthropogenic global warming and “tens of millions” of Americans losing their jobs. Because we couldn’t possibly be an adaptive society.

re: #7 Mike Lamb

I wonder why they choose 1997?

What’s going on? “1998 was the warmest year in the last century,” explains Kevin Trenberth, a distinguished senior scientist in the Climate Analysis Section of the National Center for Atmospheric Research. “There was a big El Niño event in 1997 and 1998, and we have a lot of evidence that there was a lot of heat coming out of the ocean at that time. So that’s the real anomaly — the fact that we had what was perhaps the biggest El Niño event on record.”

“That’s one of the cherrypicking points for deniers — they take the highest value and then compare it” with lower points in the natural temperature fluctuation we know as “weather.” “If you choose the highest value,” says Trenberth, “then the odds are that all the other values are going to be lower — even in the presence of an overall warming climate.”

He’s one of the consummate cons the GOP has foisted to endorse a policy that has nothing to do with reality, but everything to do with his future as a suckling pig to the monied interests he will be owned by. Grifting jackoff, with a few semi conscious Republicans willing to call him out, but too few to really amount to a palace revolt. The GOP, willing to drive your car right into a bridge abutment with you as a hood ornament.

I was being facetious. They choose ‘97-‘98 as their starting point because that was the hottest year on record due to a massive El Nino. It’s 100% cherry-picking. They’ll probably re-set the clock if the El Nino effect predicted to occur this winter is as big as anticipated.

Mair should be fired after that. Cruz behaved like a moron and should have been easily squashed by the facts. Mair instead looked like a buffoon. I know high school kids who would have taken Cruz to the woodshed for those dumb comments. While I am no fan of the Sierra Club as a group they should be able to find somebody far more able to think on their feet than that.

He may have no idea how science works, but science funding is a very different subject. Having worked as a researcher at one of the National Laboratories, I can attest that science funding is very political and in my opinion often very misguided.

I almost used the work fact instead of opinion because of numerous “scientific” decisions that were clearly political ….. Yuka Mtn. WIPP. INL/PIT9 a whole bunch of shit at Hanford ….. and that is just from personal experience. DOE, the stewards of our National Laboratory system is a cluster fuck.

The sad thing is, it’s not like the national laboratories are where all of the science is done in the US. Or even most of it. And the grant procedures for the NSF, which have their own issues, are a very different kettle of fish.

Ahmed Mansoor Selected as the 2015 Laureate Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders

Ahmed Mansoor was selected by a jury of ten global human rights organizations (see list below). The award is given to Human Rights Defenders who have shown deep commitment and face great personal risk. The aim of the award is to provide protection through international recognition. Strongly supported by the City of Geneva, the Award will be presented on Tuesday 6 October.

Since 2006, Ahmed Mansoor has focused on initiatives concerning freedom of expression, civil and political rights. He successfully campaigned in 2006-2007 to support two people jailed for critical social comments, who were released and the charges dropped. Shortly after, the Prime Minister of UAE issued an order not to jail journalists in relation to their work. Mr Mansoor is one of the few voices within the United Arab Emirates who provides a credible independent assessment of human rights developments. He regularly raises concerns on arbitrary detention, torture, international standards for fair trials, non-independence of the judiciary and domestic laws that violate international law.

He has faced repeated intimidation and harassment, including imprisonment in 2011 after being convicted of “insulting officials” and sentenced to three years in prison, although he was released after eight months. […]

Gosh, do you suppose Geller will be singing this man’s praises? Yeah, me neither ‘cause everyone knows she is the one who should have won it for her tireless work via AFDI. //

Sadly, Mr. Mansoor can’t even receive his award in person because the UAE government has revoked his passport and banned him from overseas travel. Here’s his speech:

No, it’s not.

There’s all kinds of continuing authorized spending that can’t just be cancelled like a cellphone. There’s Social Security, there’s Medicare, there’s military contracts that $X are due each quarter or each testing stage, there’s salaries for Park Service employees and Embassy employees and Senators, there’s interest due on T-Bills at specific intervals…

re: #94 sagehen

No, it’s not.

There’s all kinds of continuing authorized spending that can’t just be cancelled like a cellphone. There’s Social Security, there’s Medicare, there’s military contracts that $X are due each quarter or each testing stage, there’s salaries for Park Service employees and Embassy employees and Senators, there’s interest due on T-Bills at specific intervals…

When we hit the debt ceiling, those bills are still coming in, and we can’t just not pay them.

This is the key thing. We don’t make those interest payments, we’re in default.

With cellular services, you can get any phone number you want from any region you want.

Sure but if you live in CA wouldn’t you get a CA #? Maybe I’m old. My cell remains American while I live in Canada (on the border). I get “roaming” numbers. Maybe he’s had it forever it just struck me as odd.

In the US, you can get any US area code. Since there are no US carriers in .ca, I don’t know what the situation is up there.

For prepaid, I can sign up for any area code (at least on AT&T.) And my landline replacement from T-Mobile (T-Mobile@Home) moved up and kept my original area code when I relocated.

Really? You might want to check your math.

Not a question of math. The government buys things, hires workers, contracts with people, promises benefits, borrows money on which it owes interest. These are what the government owes. That’s money already spent.

When the bill comes due, if there aren’t sufficient funds in the Treasury, funds must be borrowed. These accumulate, and at a certain point reach the statutory limit, which prior to 2009 was raised routinely with no kerfuffle.

Anyway you slice it, it’s paying for what we already bought.

“Unfortunately, Congress consistently brings the government to the edge of default before facing its responsibility. This brinkmanship threatens the holders of government bonds and those who rely on Social Security and veterans benefits. Interest rates would skyrocket, instability would occur in financial markets, and the federal deficit would soar. The United States has a special responsibility to itself and the world to meet its obligations. It means we have a well-earned reputation for reliability and credibility — two things that set us apart from much of the world.” - Ronald Reagan

The Department of the Treasury definition of the “Debt Ceiling”:

The debt limit is the total amount of money that the United States government is authorized to borrow to meet its existing legal obligations, including Social Security and Medicare benefits, military salaries, interest on the national debt, tax refunds, and other payments. The debt limit does not authorize new spending commitments. It simply allows the government to finance existing legal obligations that Congresses and presidents of both parties have made in the past.

It has nothing to do with the upcoming budget or future spending. It’s 100% about money already allocated and obligated by law to be spent. If you think we spend too much, the debate on the actual budget is where you argue this, not the woefully badly named “debt limit”.

freetoken  Oct 7, 2015 • 5:16:50pm

re: #132 TedStriker

In the big picture, US debt is part of manipulating money supplies and macro-economics.

Anything that has a “US Treasury” name attached would be accepted by the Fed at their window, so even if a debtor couldn’t get paid right away, the Fed will still take it as a deposit.

So that increases the money supply.

Stuff happens.

Boeing has two 787’s sitting up in Everett ready for delivery to Kenya Airlines. And there they sit.

The Ex-Im Bank shutdown is apparently the hold-up.

From: nyc787.blogspot.com

“Even though this is preliminary, I expect that Boeing can deliver up to 14 787s but this number includes the 2 Kenya Airways jests which I list as “In Storage.” Some notable deliveries planned for October include the first 787-8 to Oman Air, 2 787-8s to Qatar Airways, 2 787s to Scoot (one -8 and one -9) and two more 787-9s to British Airways. If Congress can resolve the Ex-Im Bank issue (October 2015 might be the last chance to do this until 2017) then the two Kenya Airways 787-8s can also be delivered.”

I think 2017 should be 2016.

However your assertion about the Bush white house emails “disappearing” being ‘100% incorrect’ is asinine.

Here it is, and notice it doesn’t have a “neutrality disputed” flag and a bunch of “citation needed” marks in it.

en.wikipedia.org

Bush and Cheney were probably not pressing the delete key themselves, or even telling people to, but it did happen during that administration on their watch, and up to 22 million emails might have been deleted, so 100% incorrect it is not.

Chuck is flailing. Two days before he’s supposed to respond in a lawsuit that could cost him a WHOLE LOT of money. This is almost sad.

Almost being the key word.

On a lighter note, I see there is a page about who should play OUR Charles Johnson in an upcoming pic. (which is already shot, so it’s just an exercise in imagination).

The truth is obvious. Anybody who would think anybody OTHER than Jeff Bridges is even a viable choice is apparently huffing on paint fumes in their spare time.

Great to see the word “jakes” in modern use. It was our school euphemism, appears in King Lear.

100% completely false, but I love love Gene Wilder.

It’s simple.

Don’t do private business on government systems. You can get fired.

Don’t do government business on private systems. You can get fired.

Those of us that have actually handled classified information know the rules.

If you do, you will end up with the complete cluster fuck that is Hillary Clinton.

OK, Dad, we get it. You’ve got an erection because the “scandal” may allow one of your party’s clowns to win next year.

But don’t pretend like this is about principle or substance. This is about your party doing what they do, since at least the 90s. Instead of actual governance they look for scandals. We saw it through the Bill Clinton admin., we’ve seen it under Obama, and if elected we’ll see it again under Hillary. Maybe you think that’s a good thing, because it helps your party. But the douchebag congress members who run around screaming “FIRE!” about Benghazi and emails are pure partisan tools. You’re their dupe.

Another example of IOKIYAR. Which Republicans have you been concerned about due to their server use?
