I knew this just couldn’t be correct….and my response….
What this tells me is that the numbers are highly suspect. In 2014, there were 14,827 murders in the US, ranking us 8th among all countries in the world on a numerical basis, sitting just above Columbia. Murder statistics for 2014 show the following: Chicago - 392, Detroit - 300, New Orleans - 150 and Washington DC - 108 for a total of 950. If you remove those from the total you get 13,877.
That total ranks the US 9th in the world, basically slipping us just BELOW Columbia. In other words, and I’ll put this as gently as possible, that meme is nothing other than pure, unadulterated horse-shit.
It’s hard to have a rational discussion when one side insists on simply making up the facts.

This kind of poster works well on gun fetishists who can’t do basic math.
Whether you look at raw number of murders or murder rates, there’s no way those 4 cities could affect our ranking that much. The 4 cities account for about 7% of murders in the US. Not mathematically possible for that relatively small change to move us from #3 to #195 on the world list.
Calculating the murder rate with and without the 4 cities is pretty simple and you can quickly see that the differences would be minor. 14,000/x isn’t gonna be much different from 15,000/x when x (total US population, with and without 4 cities) doesn’t change much.

After the Spurs and Mavs had the two best records in the Western Division, but met in the first round of the playoffs, the NBA changed it so that the division winners and the two best non-division teams made the playoffs, and then the seeding was done based on rank. It still leaves intradivision rivalries, but makes getting one of the best records worth something.
