I’m almost embarrassed to say that I’m a Card’s fan, since they have had such a winning record. But I’m third generation (that I know of), and there have been some downs in there!

That division is just sick. Seriously, 97 & 96 wins win the division 98.5% of he time. But take a bow, you guys won 100! Good luck!

A rare moment of peace and quiet, as I wrap up my Oregon project and head for Washington state. Had a few minutes last night to catch up on the news out of good old South Carolina and (sorry if this has already been discussed—I haven’t been able to keep up) could Nikki Haley and Lindsey Graham be any more disgusting? Really, Nikki and her “God is smiling on South Carolina” because the sun came out one day—meanwhile people are drowning, losing everything they had, coffins are floating down the streets, dams are breached, and then there’s Nikki.

And Lindsey, I’m so sure you can’t remember how you voted on Sandy relief. RIGHT. I certainly do—the entire Republican lot of you assholes who represent a hurricane-prone state voted against it. We remember it well, you lying sack of shit. And suddenly, the WE HATE THE FEDS—KEEP THOSE AWFUL FEDS OUT OF OUR BIDNESS—now they want MONEY and they want it NOW and they don’t care how much it costs—[Scarlett O’Hara] they’ll just deal with that tomorrow. [Scarlett O’Hara.]

Fuck them all sideways with a rusty chainsaw. And yet, when the next election rolls around, the morons in SC will vote them all back in.

Can you tell I’m tired and cranky and pissed off?

Boy, you picked the perfect time to come to Washington! After a murderously hot summer and now a glorious month or so of sunny but cool weather, the rains started today. Probably go on till April or May now….

Of course it rains here 365 days a year—that’s what we tell the tourists.

In all the times I’ve been to Washington, I’ve only seen it rain once. Forecast looks like rain Saturday and Monday, and fairly nice the rest of the week. It can’t be raining as much as it has been in SC. And the weather in Oregon has been outstanding. Not that I get to enjoy much of it, what with working the ridiculous hours I have been.

I had classes this morning here, so I missed all the inadvertent UpChuck comedy and had to catch up.

To recap: He got a C&D letter from Renee Elmers’ lawyers to retract the stories saying she and McCarthy were having an affair. Those stories are still up, BTW.

He also spent a lot of time trying to pry information about Gawker from Adam Weinstein, suggesting either that he would include Weinstein in the libel suit or pay money for the info.

Have I got that right?

Isn’t getting information to respond to Gawker’s motion to dismiss his lawyer’s job? I mean, that’s why you hire a lawyer — to do all the legwork to defend you in court. If the plaintiff (CCJ in this case) is doing research, then something is very wrong.

Well, not quite. I do have fond memories of being forced to go to a baseball game in dress uniform while in the Infantry school at Ft Benning. A glass of the hair of the dog then sleeping off the previous nights hangover for 8.5 innings made for the closest thing to an enjoyable game I’ve ever seen. I’ll do my heathen best though for the Cubs.

This week in GotNewsDotCom v. World: cease & desist letter yesterday, Gawker response tomorrow

GotNewsDotCom is having a busy week, legally anyway.

Yesterday, Chuck C. Johnson, editor-in-thief of said “online nwespaper,” blogged that attorneys representing Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) had sent him a cease and desist letter, demanding that GNDC stop spreading reports that Ellmers and House Majority leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) were having an affair.

Though the letter demands Johnson’s articles alleging the affair be immediately taken down, they were still up today.

Meanwhile, another chapter in Johnson’s libel suit against gawker.com is due to begin tomorrow, as Johnson’s attorneys need to respond to Gawker’s motion to either dismiss the case, or move the venue to either California (where Johnson and GotNews are based) or to New York (where Gawker is based). Johnson logically had filed his complaint in St. Louis, Missouri.

Not all of them transpire within 24 hours, but the scripts rarely refer to how much time has elapsed. The NCIS people sometimes refer to sleeping at the office overnight, and flights abroad are seldom less than 6 hours. L&O in its various incarnations also omits the days between initial investigation and the beginning of prosecution in court.

It bugs me, too. It seems like such an easy thing to put a time&date stamp somewhere on the screen as a reminder that police and legal stuff takes a LOT of time.

NCIS is pretty good about it. CSI, Bones, and a lot of the others do it all the damn time, where someone will literally say “well, we solved that by dinner time.”

Yeah, pretty much. CSI takes a lot of tech shortcuts that don’t really exist, or take much longer than they portray. Abby’s mass spec at least takes several hours to spit out results. Bones I gave up on after season 3. I caught a recent ep the other day and just could not get back into it. Too many couples working in the same office to make it believable. I’ve mostly given up L&O, but still follow NCIS, mostly for the characters. NCIS has really dipped into worldwide terrorism/spy shit, and a lot of the stories defy all logic, but Gibbs & Co. at least make it easier to suspend disbelief.

But NCIS: LA? Nope, even with Linda Hunt being badass. NCIS: NOLA? Is it still on the air? Criminal Minds? Meh.

I binge watched The Blacklist. James Spader makes it worthwhile, but the Illuminati-style conspiracy shit also requires suspension of disbelief.

I guess the old-fashioned Dragnet and Adam-12 down-home cop shows are too boring for today’s audiences.

There are only so many plots and plot devices available for a 45-minute teleplay. The latest seems to be “put the lead character in the hospital” and “put the lead character (or his/her SO) in jeopardy somehow,” then have the supporting cast scurry around acting like chickens without their heads on.

I’d like the networks to try the 90-minute mini-series again, like in the Colombo days. True Detective, which doesn’t have to work around commercials, does a pretty good with plot development in each episode, but it’s really a mini-series, too.

European politics are being reshaped:

MIGRANT INFLUX BOOSTS RIGHT-WING IN KEY AUSTRIAN ELECTION

Just a few days after more than 100,000 people turned out in Vienna to support refugees, an anti-refugee party is poised to land a huge coup - a win at the polls that could see them take control of the Austrian capital.

More than any other topic, Austria’s stance toward refugees is determining Sunday’s race for Vienna’s city hall, pitting voters who welcome those fleeing into Europe against others who fear that a surge of refugees threatens their own well-being.

[…]

But the asylum numbers and the nightly newscasts showing masses of people entering Austria have increased support for the Freedom Party, which believes that immigration not only threatens traditional Austrian values but also cuts into an already shrinking job market.

In a video produced by its youth organization, a voiceover accompanying rapidly changing images of shrouded women asks: “Did you know that you will become a stranger in your own country? Did you know that you soon could become jobless?”

[…]

Yeah; it’s one of the reasons I have such respect for David Fincher’s Zodiac. It’s one of the more realistic police procedurals I’ve seen. And even though it ends with the strong suggestion that Arthur Leigh Allen was indeed the Zodiac Killer (there’s no physical evidence to support a case, and he’s long since passed away, so it’s sort of moot) it’s still one of the best films I’ve ever seen on that particular case. Lots of nice little touches - like using different actors to portray Zodiac at the Vallejo attack, the Lake Berryessa attack and the Paul Stine murder. I’ve turned on quite a few of my students to it, and their acclaim for the film has been essentially universal. And I’ll never think of Donovan’s “Hurdy Gurdy Man” the same way again - ‘…here comes the roly-poly man, singing songs of love’.

The showrunners depend on shootouts to replace the plot and dialogue each ep doesn’t really have. It’s the weakest of the three NCIS series, IMO.

Things you find while Wikiwalking:

The Cadaver Synod (also called the Cadaver Trial; Latin: Synodus Horrenda) is the name commonly given to the posthumous ecclesiastical trial of Pope Formosus, held in the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome during January of 897.[1] The trial was conducted by the successor, Pope Stephen (VI) VII, to Formosus’ successor, Pope Boniface VI. Stephen accused Formosus of perjury and of having acceded to the papacy illegally. At the end of the trial, Formosus was pronounced guilty and his papacy retroactively declared null. The Cadaver Synod is remembered as one of the most bizarre episodes in the history of the medieval papacy.

The beginning of Beowulf:

Hwæt! We Gardena in geardagum,
þeodcyninga, þrym gefrunon,
hu ða æþelingas ellen fremedon.
Oft Scyld Scefing sceaþena þreatum,

The beginning of The Canterbury Tales:

Whan that Aprill, with his shoures soote
The droghte of March hath perced to the roote
And bathed every veyne in swich licour,
Of which vertu engendred is the flour;
Whan Zephirus eek with his sweete breeth
Inspired hath in every holt and heeth
The tendre croppes, and the yonge sonne
Hath in the Ram his halfe cours yronne,
And smale foweles maken melodye,
That slepen al the nyght with open ye
(So priketh hem Nature in hir corages);
Thanne longen folk to goon on pilgrimages
And palmeres for to seken straunge strondes
To ferne halwes, kowthe in sondry londes;
And specially from every shires ende
Of Engelond, to Caunterbury they wende,
The hooly blisful martir for to seke
That hem hath holpen, whan that they were seeke.

The beginning of The Faerie Queene:

LO I the man, whose Muse whilome did maske,
As time her taught, in lowly Shepheards weeds,
Am now enforst a far vnfitter taske,
For trumpets sterne to chaunge mine Oaten reeds,
And sing of Knights and Ladies gentle deeds;
Whose prayses hauing slept in silence long,
Me, all too meane, the sacred Muse areeds
To blazon broad emongst her learned throng:
Fierce warres and faithfull loues shall moralize my song.

Yeah, they didn’t like the fact I called them out on their lack of empathy and compassion. Thinking that their gun humping trumps all else, or that the 2A is absolute.

Come to think of it, it is interesting that the originalists and contextualists who say that the plain language of the constitution must be observed rigidly always seem to ignore the bit in the 2A that requires a well regulated militia.

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

You know, the bit that the nation seems to have collectively ignored despite being clearly indicated.

Reasonable gun control is seen by the paranoid gun owners as a gun grab, even though it does no such thing. The NRA used to be for reasonable gun control, until they decided to trash gun control entirely. Now, they claim that anyone who calls for reasonable gun registration or other checks to make sure that someone is mentally stable enough to own a firearm (since 2 commit suicide by firearms every hour of every day while 1 dies 24/7/365 from a homicide) is called politicizing the latest mass killing - even though those all happen with alarming regularity that you can set a clock by.

They fight for all citizens except gay ones, non Christuan ones, and people who want to live their life not worried about gun violence. Maybe if they weren’t sexually obsessed with guns, they’d realize that absolute firearms ownership is a recipe for disaster.

True story - back in the 90s, I lived right by the Astrodome. This sucked during rodeo season because every redneck within a 500 mile radius that owned a horse trailer would jam the street I lived on every day, making my work commute suck.

However, it was awesome during baseball season. My friends would come over to my place and we’d walk to the games. We’d smuggle in booze, get the super cheap seats in center field and use the rest of our money on hot dogs and large sodas. It was a blast.

Pardon me if I don’t want to be having my burrito, drinking my beer, grocery shopping, etc when some idiot’s gun goes off. You want to have a gun at home to protect yourself? That’s fine and your business but I am not being unreasonable if I don’t want them out in public and furthermore I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ensure people with a history of violence arne’t getting them.

Sounds like AAA games in Portland. It was $2.00 for a seat in the bleachers, another $2.00 for a brat or a beer. Friends and I talked Mr. w into attending a Portland Beavers game with us. After 13 innings, we moved to the seats in the shade. The game went 17 innings and I’ve never been to another.

So I always appreciate Detroit, Pittsburgh, Cleveland and the like because they all built this country…and in a way they were the big brothers to my town and the background I grew up in.

And we were the home Isaly’s…

Definitely. Elliot Smith doing “Waterloo Sunset” is good. For reasons that not altogether positive, I frequently have “I’m an apeman, I’m an ape-apeman, well I’m an apeman” playing in my head.

The Kinks: Such an underrated British Invasion band. Should be up there with the Beatles, Stones, Who, Clapton, when people discuss the era and its music.

As i recall, they were banned from touring the USA for a long time that cost them a lot of public acclaim.

Morning.

I see everyone is speaking about languages in America.

Uh, what language does Kevin McCarthy speak?

It is vaguely English…I think. And he stands a good chance of becoming Speaker of the House and third most powerful man in American politics. Does his fumbling word usage and sentence structures mean he is a dumbass, or does he just have some kind of a speech disability?

I happened to watch Maddow last night and was shocked by how amazingly stupid McCarthy is. He has Palinesque level speechifying qualitations.

They also talk about people moving out of Rust Belt states and Northern states like NY for places like FL, TX, AZ, etc., as though the single motivating factor is that FL and TX in particular do not have an income tax.

Let’s just ignore that one of the prime motivations for moving out of NY is the high cost of living here, and the fact that the weather can be downright awful during the winter. People move away to find what they think is better climate. That’s why so many go to FL or TX. Taxes isn’t the prime motivating factor. If all your friends have moved to FL to find warm weather, you’re going to follow.

And yet, NY’s population continues growing at a steady clip. Just not as fast as other parts of the country that may have better weather. I moved out of NY to live in NJ b/c of an easier commute, etc., but NJ isn’t exactly cheap to live in either.

I was in Florida last December when the weather was in the 80’s every day and hella humid, but it was DECEMBER.

Florida install their air conditioning vents up near the ceiling, unlike here in Michigan where air conditioning vents serve double duty as heat ducts and are installed at floor level.

I SO COULD NOT live in Florida, even if I sold the nice house that I live in here, because how much could I get for it and what would it buy in Miami Beach?

No way. Ben Carson isn’t a sociopath, he’s a full-bore psychopath.

I’ve sort of watched this “Ben Carson is a sociopath” talk go by and thought it kind of over the top, but I didn’t really sweat it too much. Figured a little hyperbole here and there, whatever. But this piece you’ve linked to has a key statement RIGHT AT THE TOP:
“You won’t find the definitions in mental health’s official handbook, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Doctors don’t officially diagnose people as psychopaths or sociopaths. They use a different term instead: antisocial personality disorder. “
Medically, there is no such thing as a sociopath or a psychopath. I don’t know why WebMD, of all things, went into a discussion of the two after pointing out that there is no such thing in the first place. They basically said a psychopath is a super dickhead and a sociopath is only a really big dickhead, which is fine colloquially, but there is no medical foundation for either term, so if you post a link, try to read it first.
If I had to guess what happened somebody googled “What’s the difference between a soc…”, Google autofilled the rest, the reader saw the first sentence and copied the link.

If we’re going to mock fact free right wingers, we kind of imply that we hold ourselves to a higher standard.

I’m not going to lie, I plan to start reversing course and slowly gaining weight back in order to build muscle/strength but going to try to keep the fat gain low. I will eventually have to “cut” again but I plan to try and keep the “gain” going as long as possible.

Congrats. Awesome accomplishment. I lost around the same myself. Gained some back but now I’ve focused on getting stronger especially in my upper body. Noticed a difference when I had to lift an AC unit with my Dad the other day. Need to get rid of the belly though.

I still have a bit of fat around my lower abs. I honestly want it gone but figure it will be easier to get rid of once I’ve built some more muscle so I am comfortable where I am at. The belly is the hardest area to lose for guys.

re: #212 SteveMcGaziBolaGate

I did read it - and I majored in psych. I am sorry you don’t like the terms but they are out there in the public domain and people use them. So why not offer what they mean - what the difference is, not in the DSM, but in reality of daily usage?

snopes.com

The above-quoted list of steps for “How to create a social state” is another example of a political attempt to tie the names of Saul Alinsky with those of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. But the list is not something taken from the actual writings of Saul Alinsky, nor does it even sound like something he would have written (e.g., the line about “controlling health care” is anachronistic for his era, and the idea of “increasing the poverty level as high as possible” is the very antithesis of what Alinsky worked to achieve). This list is simply a modern variant of the decades-old, apocryphal Communist Rules for Revolution piece that was originally passed along without attribution until Alinsky’s name became attached to it (presumably because someone out there thought it sounded like something Alinsky might have written).

Well, when he’s not crying to himself, because if they can’t find someone to take the job, Boehner will be stuck with it until a replacement is found.

Ryan wants nothing to do with it, and the options are narrowing for the GOP to find someone that the caucus will be able to support. This is where their extremism has led.

Remember that Christian movie a few years ago where the brave college student stood up to the evil, atheist college professor who tried to get him to renounce God?

Well, it’s back…

What’s the plot line this time you ask? Let’s see:

When Grace, a Christian who teaches history at a public school, is asked an honest question about Jesus in the classroom, her reasoned response lands her in big trouble—almost before she finishes giving her answer. As the principal and superintendant join forces with a zealous civil liberties group, Grace faces an epic court case that could cost her the career she loves—and expel God from the classroom and the public square once and for all!

By the way this synopsis comes straight from the producers of the film.

Right, I always saw these memes as a form of pornography. I mean if it was really about women having the right to protect themselves. They’d use women of various ages and appearances. But they don’t. And that’s not even touching on the gun models dressed like lingerie models.

On some sites they don’t even have the lingerie…

I”m lucky. Right now I work at a place that has a gym. I go there after every shift. I still enjoy food though heh. I don’t think that will ever change about me. I had a delicious Pakistani dinner last night.

I love food, still eat really well but am careful as to how much and what the “macros” are. Of course now that I can reverse course I plan to be a little more relaxed since gaining muscle necessarily means eating more and even gaining some fat but I am fine with that. Just want to keep progressing in my strength training and weight lifting. I was pretty proud of hitting 200lbs on the deadlift but I’ve pretty much reached the ceiling unless I start eating more and gaining more muscle.

Remember that Christian movie a few years ago where the brave college student stood up to the evil, atheist college professor who tried to get him to renounce God?

Well, it’s back…

Embedded Image

What’s the plot line this time you ask? Let’s see:

When Grace, a Christian who teaches history at a public school, is asked an honest question about Jesus in the classroom, her reasoned response lands her in big trouble—almost before she finishes giving her answer. As the principal and superintendant join forces with a zealous civil liberties group, Grace faces an epic court case that could cost her the career she loves—and expel God from the classroom and the public square once and for all!

By the way this synopsis comes straight from the producers of the film.

It sounds like that MARINE BEATS UP ATHEIST PUSSY LIBTARD PROFESSOR meme that you see on Facebook and Twitter every so often.

I think that’s closer to the truth than anyone would care to admit. Having seen Boehner in action over the past few years, it was clear that the extremist wing was pulling the strings and forcing him to accede to their demands time and again. He went along with it so he was as much of a problem as the rest, but at some level Boehner knew that we need a functioning Congress and that key legislation has to pass - namely budgets.

He let the lunatics grab too much power, and this is the end result - a GOP that can’t find a successor to Boehner in a timely fashion.

What’s even more interesting is that McCarthy took his name out of the running only hours after saying he was in it. What changed his mind, we don’t know. Maybe the realization that running an insane asylum is a thankless job - though he’d have seen that by being in his current position.

But that no one else seems to want it either is telling that the GOP is truly in disarray.

Which means that the media will somehow attempt to spin this as a Democrat’s problem.

BMI IS complete crap. It takes no account of fitness. Currently my RHR is about 50, and I can do 50 miles on a bike without dying. Not the peak of my fitness, but not bad for a 57 year old fat guy. I have weighed less and been in MUCH worse condition.

According to BMI, I’m overweight at anything over 185. At 185, I’d look sickly. I look really good between 200 and 210, but part of that is that I carry a lot of muscle mass in my legs, especially when I’m riding seriously.

Even at my absolute lightest, I was still overweight. I could never get into the mid 180’s where I’m considered a normal weight for a man my height. I think I just have to accept that. With respect to BMI, it really doesn’t matter whether you’re made of muscle, fat, or sugar and spice. 200+ pounds of any type place a lot of metabolic demands on your body. Granted, some body types are less ideal than others, but that’s really BMI is about.

Guess someone’s military tech isn’t up to Western standards.

Considering that the Russians have bombed medical facilities, civilians, and anyone not involved in IS or AQ, is it surprising that they lobbed a volley of cruise missiles at Syria but hit Iran “accidentally”. They are a proverbial bull in a china shop and collateral damage is something they exceed at.

If the missiles were launched from the Caspian Sea (the likely origination point), it makes more sense, since the missiles would first have to cross Iranian airspace, then Iraqi airspace, and then into Syria. So they probably had a batch of defective missiles (not exactly good for future sales).

If the missiles were launched from the Med or Black Sea, to miss your targets by two entire countries looks even worse. Either way, the Russians are showing that their bark while menacing is indiscriminate and likely to hit friend and foe.

I think ultimately though regarding weight, one has to ask themselves a few questions.
1) Do I feel comfortable at this weight?
2.) Is my mobility limited (when I was at my absolute heaviest in 2012, I would get tired really easily after walking.)
3.) Is my eating contributing to my weight- That is to say am I eating too much?
I was down in the 190’s last summer and man I’d love like hell to get down there again but I think it would take another dramatic diet like my first one and I don’t think I have the time luxury and don’t think I can depress my appetite like that again. So as a result I’m striding for a more reasonable goal- get into late 190’s/early 200’s and get stronger. do physical exercise as well as cardio at the gym now.

Judd Legum
House Republicans have been in complete disarray and without an actual leader for years.

It’s just being fully exposed now.

Remember voters. This is what America will look like if the teahadis get the absolute power they covet. Chaos will look like a good thing compared to what the nation will be reduced to by these people.

Dent is one of the most moderate R’s left. I doubt he has much sway but that is something. I actually was in his disttrict last month. He represents the Allentown area.

LOL. As Happy said, BMI is kinda bunk. You could be 7% body fat, weigh 220 and have a bad BMI. Granted I am happy having a normal BMI but I have no problem going over on it if it means more lean mass.

I used to lift weights when I was much, much younger and my BMI was out of whack with my muscle mass. Now it’s out of whack with my fat mass.

On FB just now, I observe that my wingnut cousin in West Virginia just ‘liked’ Rupert Murdoch’s ‘Real Black President’ tweet.

No words.

Good morning lizards. I am happy to report I hit my weight loss goal. I am now 195 and have lost 55 lbs since January!

Congratulations on your weight loss and well done for persevering! Getting one’s weight down can be a lonely thing at times - and frustrating as hell. How many times did you step onto the scales and exclaim, “What the fuck? I gained three pounds and I haven’t changed a thing?”

It is an ongoing struggle for me because my metabolism jumped ship at least fifteen years ago when I was but a lad of fifty-something.

Standing, as you probably know, compresses the spine, so my regimen involves a lot of not standing. Sitting upright will also compress the spine, so I try to avoid that as much as possible.

I just hang around a lot.

I’d ask for more evidence that this was “accidental”.

re: #377 HappyWarrior

I went to over 200lbs in the mid ’90s but then when I took Hapkido dropped down to 178lbs. I seem to be at my most healthy around that weight. Mind you I was also physically fit then, something that is no longer true.

I don’t seem to get much exercise while commenting on LGF & tweeting.
