Oh great. Once again, my wife and her sister, and my sis-in-law’s neighborhood, have their annual community yard sale, which means early tomorrow morning I’ve gotta lug a ton of stuff from the shed to the front yard. Geez, don’t they know I’m getting on in years and have a touch of arthritis?

Oh wait, they just showed up with a case of Guinness?

Oddly enough, it was wacky wondrous Wyoming, now chock full of anti-gummint nutters and just plain whiners, which in 1913 ratified the 16th Amendment, which gave Congress the authority to enact an income tax.

Wikipedia: “That same year, the first Form 1040 appeared after Congress levied a 1 percent tax on net personal incomes above $3,000 with a 6 percent surtax on incomes of more than $500,000.”

$3,000 was 10%er money back then.

Now the Rage Furby states that both McCarthy and Ellmers are going to resign.

The boy has some brass balls:

“Sources within DC tell gotnews.com that Ellmers and McCarthy have been stopped dining together, going to the movies, and even holding hands.

Congressman Tim Huelskamp (R-NE) told NewsmaxTV that the McCarthy affair rumors were “circulating for a long time.”

gotnews.com will keep you updated, as we have, from the start.

I’m not a metal fan, but I REALLY liked that one. For some reason as soon as it started, I was reminded of Wishbone Ash. Not quite sure where I’m making the connection in my brain, but that’s what it reminded me of in some ways. Maybe it was that the music was “complex”?

Aren’t you supposed to request an extension before the deadline? I’d imagine there’s some kind of penalty for missing a deadline set by the judge.

The penalty is set by the judge and depends on whether he thinks you’re being an asshat or just in over your head. If he filed the extension request today, though, it might not be posted until later. We’d basically need boots on the ground in order to know if the hearing actually took place.

Reality Based Steve  Oct 9, 2015 • 6:24:38pm

Heard an interesting discussion on NPR this morning on my way to the shop. Basically it was that the Freedom Caucus, along with the rest of the extreme right wing of the party (because in my heart I do believe that there can be moderate republicans) are making the entire party so dysfunctional that it’s very possible that it will end up splitting into two separate parties soon.

I’ll make this prediction, safe that nobody will dredge it up in the future, that if the GOP loses the presidential election this time around, the party will split. The Tea Party will run off and what will come out of it as the GOP will be a center-right party.

Of course if it does happen, I’ll dredge this post up and wave it around.

Desmo valves were an attempt to deal with the metallurgy of the time, particularly the problem of valve springs failing due to metal fatigue. They were designed to enable higher revs with some reliability in racing engines and, AFAIK, they were not used in a production car.

Ducati is the only one that I know of. They’re an elegant solution, technically. They do away with the friction and energy losses of the cam/spring setup because the mechanism only has to overcome the weight and inertia of the valve itself rather than the weight of the valve and it’s accompanying springs. Although the earlier implementations were very high maintenance modern day systems approach more conventional ones in their requirements.

I bet if HE’D been a Jew then, by golly, HE wouldn’t have got killed! Nosirree! He’d have said to that nice SS man, “I believe you want that guy hiding upstairs.”

Primitive, perhaps, but simple, cheap, and reliable enough for low-RPM operation.

I always thought the standard spring-return setup seemed a little primitive (and there’s always the potential problem of valve float, but not for me since I don’t ever push engines that far rpm-wise)

It’s been many years since my drag racing days and trying to make chevy V8’s spin a lot faster than the engineers planned for, but here’s what I remember. It seemed that valve float wasn’t really caused by the springs not being able to keep up, but more by the fact that they could actually start to oscillate above a certain speed, sort of like a slinky, and the end of the spring would actually come off the keeper, letting the valve float. The fixes were things like progressively wound springs, which also allowed for a lighter spring load on the cam system for most of the rotation and/or using a smaller spring wound the opposite direction inside the main spring. The inner spring didn’t really contribute to closing the valve, it was fairly light, but it’s main purpose was to provide a counterforce inside the main spring to keep it from collapsing inward when it wanted to oscillate.

And a lot of it was black magic, and ‘this worked for this guy, so I’ll do it too’.

Doubtful. It was the Tea Party that hijacked the GOP becuase the GOP had money-they could have just as easily thrown in with the Liberterians, but they have the resources of flea farts. Without some massive cash from billionaire cranks there is no way they can split-the best they’ve been able to do so far is primary center-right GOP critters and they have had some success in that arena.

I happen to disagree. The tea Party needs the GOP moderate. Without them, they are out on the fringe. Conversely, without the Teabaggers, the Moderate wing is also out on the fringe. It’s a marriage of convenience.

I ran clipped keepers on my early small displacement, high rev engines. The valve spring just stops being a spring at some frequencies and if it stops at exactly the wrong time, conventional valve keepers could just fall off. And then you dropped a valve, knocked a hole in the piston, became addicted to drugs and alcohol and wound up doing hard time in Soledad for taking a shot at a county sheriff.

I’m neither an engineer or a physicist. I seem to recall an article in Chevy High Performance Mag about it, how using super high speed cameras they could actually see the valve spring start to act like a slinky. Figure at 9000 RPM that valve is getting moved up and down over a bit more than a 1/2 inch 4500 times a minute, or 75 times a second. Pretty freaking amazing when you think about it.

Of course, I was also amazed when I had the realization down in Florida this month while I was using a big sieve scoop in the surf to look for sharks teeth. I’d pull up a perfect scallop shell and think “I am almost certainly the first person on earth to see this particular shell”.

I guess I’m easily amazed. :)

re: #154 Dark_Falcon

Especially of note is the T-72 with the tactical number ‘439’. Unlike the great majority of T-72s seen in pro-Russia forces in Ukraine, its not a T-72B. From the looks of its turret in this and other photos of this tank I’ve seen, it seems to be a very rare final production run example of the original T-72, with armor panels those had installed on the turret.

This one’s armor panels now also hold EDZ first-generation explosive reactive armor, and it has the later-added High Hardness Steel applique armor. Other improvements such as an improved turret-traverse motor, and an improved gun barrel should be assumed.

An interesting example of an old tank (if I’m right about what it is, its as old as I am) given a overhaul and put back into service with new equipment.

Also it seems we were all wrong about who was going to do a major pro-gun speech. The mayor of Jerusalem just scooped the GOP on the theme:

Jerusalem’s mayor urges EVERYONE across Israel to carry a gun at all times after two Israeli soldiers are stabbed in Alufa

Jerusalem’s mayor has urged every Israeli citizen with a gun license to carry a weapon at all times following a rise in security tensions.

Nir Barkat, a former military officer and licensed gun owner, defended his decision to carry a weapon during a visit this week to an Arab neighborhood and encouraged other licensed gun owners to also carry their weapons.

‘One of the advantages Israel has is that there are many veterans of military units with operational combat experience,’ he said. ‘Having a weapon increases the resident’s confidence.’

His calls for Israelis to arm themselves follow the same suggestion by Israel’s deputy Defense Minister Eli Ben Dahan.

The announcement comes after two Israeli soldiers were stabbed in Afula. The Palestinian attacker was shot dead, marking the fourth stabbing against an Israeli soldier today.

The attack occurred after an Arab attacker stabbed four Israelis with a screwdriver before a soldier shot and killed him.

Even if you don’t like the ‘Daily FAIL’, read this story. Because this is going to be huge on Twitter.

The M1A1 is a much better tank than any version of the T-72, but that old one and its younger T-72B brother have a good number of upgrades that Saddam’s Republican Guard didn’t have. They also almost certainly have better crews than 90% of the crews Iraq had then or has now.

Is beauty of upgrades, Decatur Debranovich. Laser rangefinder does not need elaborate adjustment, just line up and push button. And type of shell is programmed into autoloader, so again gunner only needs to push button. Gun is automatically loaded and then elevates according to rangefinder data. No way for dropping of shell, as your human loaders do on American tanks, comrade.

Note: That really is a simplified version of how those two systems work together. The full version is here.

I vaguely recall an extra hour given on days at the end of the week…

Either way, any attorney living on Planet Earth in 2015 should be filing with ECF unless it’s one of those documents that must be delivered to the court personally (Petition and a couple of others in special circumstances).

The mechanics don’t matter, though, dude’s lawyer should have responded to this well before the deadline.

I would hope Gawker is ready to go with a Motion for Default Judgement, filed by ECF at 8:00:01 A.M. Islamic State closes in on Syrian city of Aleppo; U.S. abandons rebel training effort

Islamic State fighters have seized villages close to the northern city of Aleppo from rival insurgents, a monitoring group said on Friday, despite an intensifying Russian air-and-sea campaign that Moscow says has targeted the militant group.

News of the advance came as the United States announced it was largely abandoning its failed program to train moderate rebels fighting Islamic State and would instead provide arms and equipment directly to rebel leaders and their units on the battlefield.

The Obama administration is grappling with a dramatic change in the four-year-old Syrian civil war brought about by Moscow’s intervention in support of President Bashar al-Assad.

Two unrelated shootings at universities in Arizona and Texas on Friday left two students dead and four injured, continuing a skein of campus violence following last week’s rampage at an Oregon community college that killed nine.

The shooter in the Texas Southern University slaying remains at large. In the Northern Arizona University attack, an 18-year-old freshman has been charged with first-degree murder. Authorities say he opened fire on a group of students after a late-night conflict in a parking lot of the Flagstaff campus, leaving one student dead and three other people injured early Friday.

The blasts were at the two sides of the exit of the main train station in the city, where the People’s Democratic Party (HDP) supporters were gathering, they said.

We’re not going to do that and we shouldn’t. Let the world think what it wants, but IMO the strike was needed to clear out the Taliban from a strongpoint and to make clear to the Afghan Army’s men on the ground that they would be supported.

Frankly also, trying our people for this would have a chilling effect I’m not willing to incur. It also makes it likely Iraq would opt for Russian help due to our inability to provide the air support they need. My love of watching Grand Prix racing live on TV is catching up with me. 3 & 5 AM sessions from Mother Russia (Sochi) the last two days and I get disoriented.

Anyways…saw a repeat of Rachel Maddow from last night. Damn, it really appears that the Republicants are going to kill off any “moderate” GOPer, like Paul Ryan. She hinted that means anyone that has any record of anything seen as working with Democrats or for favoring any kind of legislature the Freedom Caucus doesn’t like will not get their votes.

They may even refuse Boehner coming back to the job and hold a vote to boot him, which they were prepared to do before he stepped down.

It is looking more and more like some kind of a coalition deal with Republicans and Democrats will be needed. But what kind of a tantrum will the Freedoms throw should that happen.

We may very well be seeing the Republican party falling apart. What a freaking mess.

Dude, just no. It may come out down the line that the hospital was occupied, there’s certainly conflicting accounts about that. It’s even conceivable, though unlikely, that MSF local staff could have become compromised by militants like Red Crescent staff have been in the past, thought that is in no way proven. None of that however would make such an overwhelming strike on a designated safe zone the right thing to do. There may well be context that helps us understand how this happened and how to prevent such a strike from recurring in the future, but nothing will absolve it. At best it would point to the need for better tactics in such a scenario, ones that deal with the complexities of the modern insurgent battlefield without saying fuck you to the legal conventions of war.

It really seems like you want to have it both ways, to be able to condemn Assad’s use of barrel bombs over rebel held civilian areas like Aleppo for instance, while tacitly condoning the targeting of a designated hospital safety zones when it suits you. Clarification: Bombarding a hospital was a mistake and we should look into how that mistake happened. But I don’t think non-administrative punishment is appropriate or wise, given the circumstances, and I don’t favor an international investigation.

I don’t like to downding, but no. Just no.

Drink a cup of coffee, or whatever eye-opener you favor. Look at what you wrote and think about it. Really think, not just react with an emotional knee-jerk. This was a hospital, for the love of all that makes us human. I don’t care if there were Taliban firing from there or near to it, this was a hospital.

Even if a basic sense of decency doesn’t penetrate the ingrained tribalism, a sense of consequences should. There is no way this should not be investigated fully by an international group that can be seen to be non-partisan. We as a country need to acknowledge and accept responsibility where it is due, when it’s known what is do.

Dark, you show so often that you have the heart of a decent man. Think about the human beings who were killed and injured in the strike, in a place that had tried to offer them healing and safety. They aren’t points scored or lost in a game. You’re not responsible to me or anyone else to justify your reactions, but please just think about them.

Clarification: Bombarding a hospital was a mistake and we should look into how that mistake happened. But I don’t think non-administrative punishment is appropriate or wise, given the circumstances, and I don’t favor an international investigation.

A non-international investigation will invariably be seen as a coverup however. Which is something you’re remarkably blasé about considering the long term negative impact on US security and future coalition building ability.

The best part of the MSF hospital strike story is what we’re not talking about because of it.

U.S. Soldiers Told to Ignore Sexual Abuse of Boys by Afghan Allies

So while the US military desperately scrambles to figure out exactly why they schwacked a fucking hospital, as a nation we can all collectively gloss over the fact that we did it on behalf of an Allied force with a gigantic child rape problem.

What a magical time to be alive.

I’ve seen that as well. I have to say. We really need to I think find a new way of doing FP. I realize that not everyone we team up with is going to be a boy scout and I know we had ot team up with frigging Stalin to beat the Nazis but man we need to draw lines.

DF there’s is no “current crisis” in Afghanistan, we’ve been there over a decade now, what is going on there is not going to be an isolated incident, it is the state of the territory and we can expect it to remain that way. There is going to be no quick and easy solution to the nation’s problems, we can either try to muddle through in the long run or thrown up our hands and leave, but short term thinking only gets us the worst of both worlds.

Even if you don’t like the ‘Daily FAIL’, read this story. Because this is going to be huge on Twitter.

Big difference: every single one of those Israelis authorized to carry a gun (less than 12% of the total population - a figure that INCLUDES IDF FORCES) has:
A) Undergone mandatory military service of at least two and a half years
B) Undergone professional military/civilian weapons training and testing
C) Been permitted to have a license and weapon based on closely-inspected criteria;
D) Undergoes regular certification processes on an annual basis (which includes revocation of certification if circumstances change - including something as basic as moving from one city to another)

One of my pet hobbies when it comes to dealing with ammosexuals is encouraging them to ‘embrace the Israeli model’ (“hey, Israel deals with terrorists much more and far better than us, and they have almost zero gun violence in comparison, even with terror statistics taken into account!”), then casually dropping the details of the Israeli model on their unsuspecting heads. At which point, you can almost hear the poor craniums imploding…

re: #244 Archangelus

Forgot to include that I, for one, am actually quite fine with the Israeli model implemented at least in part in the US - possession of a tool of potential mass death should require at least a few mandatory lessons and a test, just like with a car (another tool of potential mass death).

BTW, for those interested in knowing what IDF weapons training is like:
Israelis in the IDF, both combatants and non-combatants alike, learn how and when to use weapons (mostly assault rifles - M-16s with grenade launchers, Uzis, Galil, and Tavor - as well as handguns, and sniper rifles for special units) over a mandatory period. This period is at least two intensive weeks for non-combatants, with combatants having a month or more depending on which unit they serve in. Classroom lectures, gun ranges, field days - there are zero excuses, and a person either passes it or has to repeat boot camp all over again.
As part of the instruction process, they are required to have the weapon with them at all times: in the morning, each day, they undergo a mandatory ‘inspection, dis-assembly, and safety’ process in front of the commanders, then again in the evening; At night they even go to sleep with it (the person on the mattress, the rifle underneath it - though this stems mostly due to tradition, as many years ago, the risk of weaponry theft was far higher).
Lastly, and perhaps most important of all: during this time, they are also required to watch numerous fiction and non-fiction videos about the consequences of inappropriate gun handling (two of which - based on actual events - still stick with me to this very day, and illustrate just how unexpected and horrible it can be when a weapon is treated improperly).
The bottom line is that not a single Israeli would consider a handgun or a rifle as a ‘toy’, something to be played with or used for hunting, pride or giggles. The most of an entire country is trained professionally to view guns as what they are, weapons of war and death, which goes a long way to explain why gun violence in Israel is so very low despite everything…

I get it but the details play a big deal into the difference, and not just because of the whole gun issue in general - what started with rock-throwing has escalated considerably, and there have been 11 stabbing attacks with fatalities carried out by Palestinians over the past week, many in Jerusalem (which is what promoted the mayor’s statement).
Tensions in Israel in general and in Jerusalem in particular are near a boiling point right now - the police is on high alert across the country and the streets are almost empty. This is especially the case in Jerusalem, where one of the attacks happened just a couple of hours ago - a youth stabbed two people and when ordered to stand down by policemen, he tried to stab them and was shot dead.

I swear I remember reading about this before 2009 somewhere. I used to read a lot more than I do now, having abandoned some of my earlier bookmarks (like counterpunch, firedoglake, and others that lost their damned minds as their ventures led to more publicity and money) and I cannot remember where I read about it, but I think it was a soldier’s account of this kind of shit happening more often than we care to ever think about. I don’t think it was just DynCorp either, Blackwater, KBR and Halliburton were mentioned as well.

But no, the people in the middle east have no reason at all to see America as anything but good and perfect and something to be jealous of. Damn it.

Everybody always thinks the near term is more important about all the things, all the time.

That’s why global warming isn’t getting fixed and the banks blew up the economy and our infrastructure is crumbling and our schools are going to shit and our Congress is dysfunctional.

Poor people and weak people have desperate reasons to focus on the immediate. The richest, most powerful nation in the history of the world needs to take a longer view.

One other interesting point of difference is the place of shotguns. Israel has very few, as I understand it, and they are almost exclusively used for hunting. Israeli police use carbine and Personal Defense Weapon (PDW) configurations of assault rifle as well as submachineguns, but I never see them with shotguns.

By contrast, in the US shotguns are ubiquitous in private hands, in the hand of law enforcement at all levels, and in the military. But some of that is culture: The United States has a hunting culture than predates the Founding and shotguns are so much a part of it and so common that their presence often goes unremarked upon.

Israelis don’t own guns for pleasure, they are armed as a matter of necessity and national policy. The weapons they carry have specific purpose, and they are trained to use them. There is literally no valid comparison between the US and Israel in these terms.

Oh wait, Israel is a classic case of the need and practice of the second amendment. So unlike the US where the intention of the second amendment has been warped and twisted.

Hey everyone. So not that I’ve been talking about it, but two months ago I took a corp-to-corp contracting gig (went 1099, not LLC as it was only a 4 month con-to-hire thing). I had a couple of other jobs in the pipeline and needed some money to make the mortgage so I figured what the hell, I can step down to a more IC role and write a bit of code when necessary. Well, two months into my 4 month contract, they made it official, are bringing me on as a perm employee, and those other gigs? There will be others. I kind of like the security of this place - they’re making a shit-ton of money and have 40% projected growth in the next few years. My salary is still about 30k less than I had at my last job, but it’s still plenty. Won’t be a difficult life-style change (5 months of unemployment made that transition easier).

Anyhoo. Good news on the job front. Only three more days of contracting work left and I get health benefits back…Yay!

Courts don’t take kindly to being late on filings. That Chucky’s crackpot legal team is on the verge of missing a deadline, you can be sure that the court isn’t going to abide by an extension made after the deadline. They could dismiss with prejudice, in which case they wouldn’t be able to file again. Or, much less likely, impose sanctions for wasting the court’s time.

In either case, if the case falls apart, guess who’s left holding the bag for paying for all this BS. That’s right. Chucky.

If no jurisdiction then the anti-SLAPP is irrelevant and doesn’t get ruled upon either way. So I’m wondering, if that’s what happens will Chuck still be on the hook for Gawkers legal costs or no?

Whoo boy! Surgical skills aside, there is something deeply wrong inside of his head. Spouting off vague Glen Beck style conspiracies being perpetrated on Americans by some unnamed “secular progressives”.

Rose asked him many times to give an example of who he was speaking of. He just kept answering, with a wink and a smile…I think we all know who they are.

It was just creepy as hell.

Alright everybody! Today and tomorrow are big days. Make sure you go to your local mosque and ask Muslims to explain what Islam is really all about. Make sure to maintain your cool. As Americans we are law abiding citizens and should act in that manner. This is not a “hate” rally as some would like to think. This is a call to action. This is a call to exercise the right to find out first hand the truth about Islam.
Nothing beats first hand experience and this should be a good lesson to all of us so that we may take proper action to protect ourselves and our families from anyone who wishes to mislead us or harm us.
Please report back with photos and quote about what you learn over these next two days.

Oookay some good some bad there. People full of the wrong ideas, but still just maybe honestly reaching out. But in difficulty comes opportunity and the nice people at the Mosque reply first comment

Muhammad Rizvi-Taqi We welcome you to come and ask about Islam. Instead of protesting outside, please come inside for cold drinks, snacks and discussion.

Thank you for coming

Props and best regards for the peacemakers out there. Interesting this site is still up when so many about the event disappeared.

Frum, too. That was my first thought, as well.

Right, he’s part of the political machine that has made the ridiculous arguments about gun control. I have no sympathy for him and other “GOP moderates” at all. Carson is what happens when you refuse to call out the base’s bullshit.

Looks like Dark woke everybody up this morning. I wouldn’t expect an international investigation to be any better than our own. Not offered as an excuse for a major F-up, I just don’t think we’ll see justice. BTW somebody upstairs challenged whether we would be as indignant if the Russians stonewalled an investigation, and I think the precedent there is the shootdown of that Malaysian Air plane.
I would like to more courteous to whoever posted that but this site is running so slow on this browser that it takes forever to scroll up and down. It seems like it took five minutes just to type this much.

Steve, if you are using Chrome, have you disabled FlashPlayer? That helps this site a whole hell of a lot.

Not sure about Firefox or Internet Explorer, as I haven’t tried it since Chrome works with it disabled.

The GOPers and their mouthpieces who are shocked, shocked, at the state of the party have yet to come up with a solution or to admit any culpability in the rise of the RWNJs. They all act as if their party was hit by an asteroid that left many of them insane. And, they won’t offer anything other than clutching their pearls because the nutcases are a direct result of GOP policies that date back to the late Sixties. They don’t have alternatives because they’ve shouted down or purged anyone on their side who offers them.

I watched a more “in depth” intervew of Carson on Charlie Rose (PBS) last night.

Don’t even get me started on what he said about foreign policy. No. Hell No.

Also, in Dearborn

An anti-Islam rally is planned for Saturday in Dearborn, organized by open-carry gun advocates who say they are patriots trying to protect America, one of about 20 such rallies planned nationwide.

Dearborn Police Chief Ron Haddad said authorities are monitoring the rally, working with the FBI, U.S. Attorney’s Office in Detroit and State Police. The rally is part of what organizers call the Global Rally for Humanity, an attempt to bring attention to what they call “radical Islam.”

I read that as less threatening. You could be right. I would just suggest that mindset has to be brought along a bit at a time. Exposure to some kind people and some explanation about why ISIS and our other collective real nightmares come to life like them are not representative of Islam, and certainly not of those people that go to the Mosque instead of a church.

ISIS keeps poisoning minds about Islam. Damnable tactic that works all too well.

In spite of what the current culture tries to sell us, eventually being an asshole isn’t a very popular thing. That’s what the GOP and RWNJs in general are failing to grasp. Pretty soon all they’ll have left are the reactionaries, the ones who hate the government but still vote (which is the weirdest fucking thing I’ve ever come across, and here in GA there’s a LOT of this shit), which I don’t think is going to be enough to keep them in power beyond small local races or in places like my district, where there is never a democrat to vote for.

You wouldn’t hire a babysitter who hates kids, it would be a disaster. You wouldn’t hire someone who hates to cook as a chef, another disaster. Why on earth so many people have decided to hire elected officials that hate government and expect anything less than a full metal disaster is beyond me. I can’t wrap my head around it. What I do know is that it could literally take a couple of generations to repair the damage being done right now. And I’m not even counting the families, friendships and neighborhoods being ruined by this level of hate and willful ignorance and fear. It’s heartbreaking.

This is something i have wondered about for years. They hate the government. They in fact want absurdly lax gun laws because they really seem to believe our government would commit a Holocaust 2.0 on them. What we need are elected officials who respect the need for government. I think we had that before the right got really fucked up. I think Nixon and even Goldwater and Reagan recongized that government has a use. Conservatives want to make people that work for the government out to be some alien entity but in reality government workers range from the person who delivers your mail every day, your child’s teacher, and yes conservatives that man in military uniform you admire.

[…]They would receive their medals barefoot, representing the poverty facing people of color. They would wear the famous black gloves, a symbol of the Black Panthers’ cause. But before going up on the podium they realized they only had one pair of black gloves. “Take one each”, Norman suggested. Smith and Carlos took his advice.

But then Norman did something else. “I believe in what you believe. Do you have another one of those for me”? he asked, pointing to the Olympic Project for Human Rights badge on the others’ chests. “That way I can show my support for your cause.” Smith admitted to being astonished, ruminating: “Who is this white Australian guy? He won his silver medal, can’t he just take it and that be enough!”.

Smith responded that he didn’t, also because he would not be denied his badge. There happened to be a white American rower with them, Paul Hoffman, an activist with the Olympic Project for Human Rights. After hearing everything he thought “if a white Australian is going to ask me for an Olympic Project for Human Rights badge, then by God he would have one!” Hoffman didn’t hesitate: “I gave him the only one I had: mine”.

The three went out on the field and got up on the podium: the rest is history, preserved in the power of the photo. “I couldn’t see what was happening,” Norman recounts, “[but] I had known they had gone through with their plans when a voice in the crowd sang the American anthem but then faded to nothing. The stadium went quiet.”

[…]

As John Carlos said, “If we were getting beat up, Peter was facing an entire country and suffering alone.” For years Norman had only one chance to save himself: he was invited to condemn his co-athletes, John Carlos and Tommie Smith’s gesture in exchange for a pardon from the system that ostracized him.

A pardon that would have allowed him to find a stable job through the Australian Olympic Committee and be part of the organization of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Norman never gave in and never condemned the choice of the two Americans.

Sure, fair enough. Nerve wasn’t the best word. I think honestly deep down many conservatives do feel guilty about those things but instead of acknowledging that there may be flows in their ideology, they place the blame on liberalism which would be funny if it weren’t so sad since conservatives like W.F Buckley, Reagan, and yes even Goldwater were defending segregation laws.

Muslims prepare for weekend of anti-Islam protests

“We’ve never had this many events at once targeting mosques in this kind of national way,” said Heidi Beirich, who tracks hate groups at the Southern Poverty Law Center. […]

“This mix of racist groups, anti-Muslim groups and anti-government groups is basically a recipe for disaster,” Beirich said. […]

Some are scheduled for Friday, the Muslim day of prayer, but many are scheduled for Saturday, when mosques are often filled with children going to religious class. […]

Paul Galloway, executive director of the American Center for Outreach in Tennessee, said law enforcement agencies in Tennessee’s urban areas have been exceedingly cooperative as Muslims prepare for a possible onslaught of anti-Muslim sentiment.

But in the past three months alone, he added, two Tennessee sheriffs have publicly made anti-Muslim comments. In more rural areas where sheriffs are elected, such bigotry “degrades our confidence in law enforcement,” he added. […]

Regarding the emphasized part, this is the emboldened scum of the scum reacting to the green light that right-wing politicians have given them.

And what scares me the most…they are creating more of them by being this open. It’s an invitation.

Ignoring them will save you trouble in the short term and lead to more in the long term. The McVeighs of this world are born provoked, anything that the gov does will outrage them anyway. Theodore Kaczynski, the Unabomber, started in 1978 and kept on for 17 more years. The idea is to dissuade those less committed and less insane.

I don’t disagree. Something should have been done though, I definitely agree.

The TANSTAAFL aspect of social media and the internet is that the RWNJs can reinforce and goad each other in large numbers. In the past your insanity was local and usually private. Now you can find loads of people who share your feelings and interests - no matter what they are.

Regarding the emphasized part, this is the emboldened scum of the scum reacting to the green light that right-wing politicians have given them.

And sadly, the town I live in is mentioned in that report. This is a small but vocal group and they are not gaining much traction and are getting push back from the majority of the town.

It’s a tough question because arrests could have given some future McVeigh type an excuse for OKC City 2.0. but at the same time, these guys needed to know that threatening federal officials with guns should not be tolerated.

Don’t leave it till the next administration. It needs care, but it needs a solution.
