Bobby Jindal Doubles Down on Vicious Attack Against Oregon School Shooter’s Father

Appealing to the debased GOP base
Politics • Views: 47,294

As I noted yesterday, Republican politicians never, ever back down from a batshit crazy (and/or hateful) statement, and Bobby Jindal illustrates this axiom perfectly as he defends his vicious attack on the Oregon school shooter’s father.

Why is Jindal being such a horrible person? Because this grieving father spoke out on the need for better gun control laws.

“We have a culture that doesn’t value life. We’ve got millions of boys growing up without a father figure, without that guidance at home. Too often these shooters are misguided young men,” said Jindal. “So you’ve got Hillary Clinton, [President] Barack Obama and now this shooter’s father lecturing us on the need for gun control. He doesn’t need to be lecturing us. He, by his own admission, didn’t know how his son got those guns, didn’t know how many guns his son had, by his own admission wasn’t involved in his sons life, hadn’t been communicating with him since he was living with his mother. He doesn’t need to be lecturing us on gun control.”

We should note that the shooter’s mother (with whom he lived) was actually a paranoid right wing extremist who stockpiled weapons because she feared the government would confiscate them from her. But Jindal has no words of criticism for her, oddly enough.

Oh, and there’s another reason why Jindal is spewing this crazed hatred; because it’s paying off for him with the Republican voting base.

Jindal, who barely registered in early polling, has seen a recent spike in his popularity in Iowa. The latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll has Jindal tied for fifth place.

Of course, Jindal doesn’t criticize the shooter’s mother. She’s part of his party’s base. The father who had the “nerve” to criticiize guns OTOH isn’t. Bobby’s a pathetic weasel. You want to know who doesn’t VALUE life? Bobby, people like you who think more guns are the answer after a tragedy like this. People like your party who have never met a war or execution they didn’t like so don’t talk to me about life you hypocritical pig.

You know we don’t need a lecture about guns from a guy who clearly only panders regarding guns because he knows it resonates with the GOP base. Does anyone think that Bobby Jindal actually knows anything that hasn’t been spoonfed NRA propaganda about guns?

Why is Jindal being such a horrible person?

Because it’s the only thing he’s said in a while that has gotten him any attention.

6
lawhawk  Oct 12, 2015 • 11:57:57am

Jindal is polling just outside the MOE in Iowa. Not exactly soaring - and it could be a handful of GOPers deciding that one of the other asterisks is more likely to disappear than anything else.

In fact, in only two polls since they started keeping tabs has anyone found Jindal with 7 points. One had him with 6. That’s the more recent poll, but everything else has him with low single digits.

Guess he’s got to try harder to say something dumb and ignorant and insane to cater to the GOP faithful to get them to consider him instead of the other GOP candidates busy saying dumb and insane things with more alarming regularity.

Unless I missed something, that skit was supposed to be satirical. All the people in it are handling the guns in insanely unsafe ways. That’s part of the point of the damned thing. It’s not supposed to be “accurate.”

Christopher Columbus (eg Cristoforo Colombo) has got to be one of the most overrated people in history. His reputation in later centuries is not just a myth, it is a whole complex of myths.
His initial proposal, to reach Japan by sailing westward, was rejected over and over, not because European scientists were ignorant or believed that the Earth was flat, but because they knew for a fact that the idea was utter crackpottery. The court advisers and others who recommended against it knew perfectly well that the Earth was round, and they knew within a couple of hundred miles how big it was.
Science had advanced quite a bit since the flat Earth days. After all, Copernicus was born just a few years after Columbus (1473) and was already at work by the time of the Italian adventurer’s first voyage to America.
The skeptics believed the giant expanse of ocean would simply swallow Columbus and his expedition if he headed that way. Since neither he nor they knew about the intervening land mass, the skeptics were right. Columbus himself remained convinced that he had reached Asia right to the end of his life, even though rudimentary astronomical observations proved conclusively that he was nowhere near Asia and it was in fact a New World, to Europeans at any rate.
Add to this his brutal and inept conduct as a governor, something that was roundly criticized even during his lifetime, and you have perhaps the greatest example in history of a stubborn, cruel, and ignorant person who lucked out to an epic degree.

Lets compare that to Chiune Sugihara:

“You want to know about my motivation, don’t you? Well. It is the kind of sentiments anyone would have when he actually sees refugees face to face, begging with tears in their eyes. He just cannot help but sympathize with them. Among the refugees were the elderly and women. They were so desperate that they went so far as to kiss my shoes, Yes, I actually witnessed such scenes with my own eyes. Also, I felt at that time, that the Japanese government did not have any uniform opinion in Tokyo. Some Japanese military leaders were just scared because of the pressure from the Nazis; while other officials in the Home Ministry were simply ambivalent.

People in Tokyo were not united. I felt it silly to deal with them. So, I made up my mind not to wait for their reply. I knew that somebody would surely complain about me in the future. But, I myself thought this would be the right thing to do. There is nothing wrong in saving many people’s lives….The spirit of humanity, philanthropy…neighborly friendship…with this spirit, I ventured to do what I did, confronting this most difficult situation—and because of this reason, I went ahead with redoubled courage.

My nominee would be Sophia Loren, though she is still very much with us. Unlike Columbus she has actually been here, quite a bit in fact. She has been a cultural icon for more than 60 years, she is a lovely woman (and not just to look at), and her contributions to society have been almost wholly positive.

Seriously, though, I think it would be appropriate to consign Columbus to the lengthy list of historical villains and replace “Columbus Day” with “Italian Heritage Day” to honor all the millions of Italian people who have contributed so much to this country.

Columbus was also a religious crank, obsessing over works he really did not have the education to understand and drawing crackpot conclusions. Sound familiar? No wonder he is popular with present day fundamentalists and other RWNJs.

From Wikipedia:

Throughout his life, Columbus also showed a keen interest in the Bible and in Biblical prophecies, and would often quote biblical texts in his letters and logs. For example, part of the argument that he submitted to the Spanish Catholic Monarchs when he sought their support for his proposed expedition to reach the Indies by sailing west was based on his reading of the Second Book of Esdras (see 2 Esdras 6:42, which Columbus took to mean that the Earth is made of six parts of land to one of water). Towards the end of his life, Columbus produced a Book of Prophecies, in which his career as an explorer is interpreted in the light of Christian eschatology and of apocalypticism.

Grand jury indicts 15 on gang terrorism charges for parading Confederate flags through black child’s party

A Grand Jury in Douglas County, Georgia handed down indictments for 15 members of a pro-Confederate flag group that crashed a black child’s birthday party and harassed attendees in July.

According to Atlanta’s Fox 5 News, Douglas County District Attorney Brian Fortner announced the indictments on Monday against members of a pro-Confederate organization called Respect the Flag.

Fortner said the men of Respect the Flag outfitted their vehicles with oversized Confederate flags and drove around the community. The group entered a predominantly black neighborhood and pulled up to a house where residents were celebrating a child’s birthday. The men harassed and threatened the guests, saying they would “kill y’all ni**ers.”

It really, literally, only takes a single tiny mistake to make the difference between dead and alive. There was a teenager out here, just a couple years back, killed someone, demonstrating his semiautomatic was empty. He worked the slide, then ejected the magazine, then pointed it and pulled the trigger.

Two simple actions, but he did them in the wrong order, and somebody’s dead because of it.

It takes a Good Guy With A Gun to stop a Bad Guy With A Gun, they say, but what does it take to stop a Regular Guy With A Gun who just spaces out for a second?

Years ago, I took a Hunter Safety class. A lot of it centered on gun safety. Most of the students were adults who thought they were good with firearms - already owned them. The first time the instructor handed a rifle to one of the students, he’d surreptitiously slid a dummy round into the chamber. Of course, the student accepted his word that the rifle wasn’t loaded.

So he had him work the bolt, and out popped the dummy round.

It’s really easy to leave your gun in an unsafe condition. All you have to do is forget to clear it.

My grandfather owned guns. He always had them locked in a cabinet in a part of the house that we hardly ever went to. I believe there is such a thing as a responsible gun owner but I also believe a lot of gun owners who claim they are responsible are not as responsible as they claim. Gun maintenance is a big thing.

I’m pretty sure this is what happened when I was shot in 1982. I do remember that the doofus was fiddling with the slide on his .45 just before it discharged.

It’s one reason I like single shots but even those are not foolproof if one insists on being a fool.

I’ve decided to only keep bolt action rifles, my side by side shotgun and get a simple old fashioned K frame revolver. All as simple as they get but any of them will still be a nightmare if someone insists on being a stupid fool with them.

Mason asked, “Do you think it’s good for the political system that so much what’s called ‘dark money’ is flowing into the process now?”

“First of all, what I give isn’t dark,” said Koch. “What I give politically, that’s all reported. It’s either to PACs or to candidates. And what I give to my foundations is all public information. But a lot of our donors don’t want to take the kind of abuse that I do. They don’t want these attacks. They don’t want the death threats. So they aren’t going to participate if they have to have their names associated with it.”

“But do you think it’s healthy for the system that so much money is coming out of a relatively small group of people?”

“Listen, if I didn’t think it was healthy or fair, I wouldn’t do it. Because what we’re after, is to fight against special interests.”

“Some people would look at you and say you’re a special interest.”

“Yeah, but my interest is, just as it’s been in business, is what will help people improve their lives, and to get rid of these special interests. That’s the whole thing that drives me.”

“There are people out there who think what you’re trying to do is essentially buy power.”

“But what I want is a system where there isn’t as much centralized power, where it’s dispersed to the people. And everything I advocate points in that direction.”

Speaking of Kadyrov, he has become a complete effing nutter. From last month:

The Kremlin’s Favorite Muslim, Kadyrov, Goes Too Far

MOSCOW — Earlier this month, the leader of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, informed his more than one million followers on social networks that he had become “the happiest man in this land.” Something had come to pass that he never could have dreamed of, he said. He had had a transfusion, he said, from a descendant of the Prophet Mohammed, so now he has the Prophet’s blood flowing through his veins.

In a not-for-attribution conversation last week, a Russian government official told The Daily Beast that the blood transfusion was seen in Moscow, as “something totally insane and wild,” but that it hardly the worst of the bad news about Kadyrov. […]

Raw Story really irritates me when they play the same kind of word-twisting games right wing media play. Case in point: Ben Carson: Pledge of Allegiance and Other ‘founding Documents’ Prove America Is a Christian Nation.

Everyone knows I’m NO FAN of Ben Carson, but that’s not what he said. This headline is basically a lie. And it’s far from the first time they’ve pulled this shit.

“So if it’s in our founding documents, it’s in our pledges, in our courts and it’s on our money, but we’re not supposed to talk about it, what in the world is that?” Carson said.

He’s clearly NOT saying the pledge of allegiance is a “founding document” at all.

Carl Bates, 55, of Galva, Illinois, has a “fast, aggressive cancer,” according to his younger brother Ernie Bates, that is affecting many parts of his body, including his kidney and spinal column, according to his family.

While he was resting at home in hospice care, choosing not to undergo treatment, his family said, the community decided to come together to complete the harvest in a day for what should have taken about a week.

Carl’s cousin, Dan, first had the idea to get the community together to help out the ailing farmer. From there, about 40 people donated trucks and labor to harvest 450 acres in 10 hours. It’s typical to harvest 80 acres a day, he said.

It’s easy:

most conservative attacks on Obama are baseless, hence, given their history, it’s reasonable to assume that racism is at play;

most liberal attacks on Carson are fair and fact-based, hence, given their history, it’s unreasonable to assume that racism is at play.

There is no equivalence.

Chris Mooney covers a paper released, though I think he projects a bit too much:

This is how rising seas will reshape the face of the United States

[…]

The world is moving towards cutting emissions — so this extreme sea level scenario probably won’t happen. But what’s striking about the study is how much very long term sea level rise we’ve already committed to. For instance, the research finds that current and already locked in emissions from existing infrastructure lead to over 600 cities or municipalities in that same situation — where land that is home to 50 percent of their current population is under water — and might flood the current homes of more than 9 million people.

[…]

No, not really. And Mooney fails to realize that even a slower emission rate will still result in a worst case scenario, it’ll just a take a bit longer.

Anyway, here is the paper in PNAS:

Bloodthirsty maniacs going after the most easily identifiable and most weakest targets as possible. Today two adult Palestinians with knives stabbed an elderly man this morning, then rushed to stab a freaking 13 year-old on a bicycle after spotting him so close to them.
Many of the perpetrators of the attacks of the past couple of weeks are Palestinian youths, who since the late 1990s have been constantly bombarded with brainwashing materials and incitement of the worst kind from Hamas’ people and TV, constantly describing anything even remotely Israeli or Jewish as deserving of death and glorifying those willing to attack. Imagine hearing and seeing that kind of stuff on a regular basis, including on TV shows aimed at children FFS, all carrying the same message over and over - how stable would someone like that be after literally growing up on that stuff around the clock? It’s insane, and that’s the reality now…
