Ted Cruz and Louie Gohmert Team Up to Form Juggernaut of Pure Idiocy

Attacking Planned Parenthood whichever way they can
Politics • Views: 49,794

Good thing our Congress critters don’t have anything important to do; this leaves them all the time in the world to stage ridiculous hateful stunts like this, as Louie Gohmert and Ted Cruz join forces to demand that the Smithsonian Museum remove a bust of Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger from the National Portrait Gallery.

And of course, their reasons for this are utterly bogus and dishonest.

Cruz, in a letter drafted with Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, and joined by two dozen House Republicans, tells the gallery’s director that the presence of the bust “is an affront both to basic human decency and the very meaning of justice.” After citing the discredited claim that Planned Parenthood sells fetal tissue for profit, the group then badly twists a Sanger quote, “We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population.”

In Sanger’s letter, which you can find here, she was saying that she wanted black leaders to join her effort to promote birth control access because she was afraid that opponents would disseminate such unfounded rumors, which is ironically exactly what Cruz and Gohmert did with their letter.

While Sanger was a believer in eugenics, so were many leaders of her time, including Winston Churchill. Ironically, Cruz consistently says on the stump that one of his first acts as president would be putting a bust of Churchill in the Oval Office. (The Obama administration’s decision not to hold onto a Churchill bust that the British government had temporarily loaned to George W. Bush has become a frequent point of attack from the Right, despite the fact that there is another Churchill bust still in the White House residence.)

Nevertheless, Cruz and Gohmert go on to say that Sanger’s “racist views have had a very real and devastating impact on the widespread destruction of unborn human life — especially in minority communities.”

Badger Guns in Milwaukee have been found guilty/liable for selling a gun to a straw purchaser who bought the gun for a minor that shot two cops.

This is a big ruling and hopefully sets precedence. IMO this is the angle that needs to be taken. Going after gun stores and shows that sell to bad people. 1800 guns used in crimes were traced back to this store alone.

Ohio’s TRAP law is even more stringent than most. The provision tucked into the state’s 2013 budget forbids abortion clinics from entering into transfer agreements with public institutions — which prevents them from partnering with the large teaching hospitals affiliated with state schools, like the University of Toledo. Most of the private hospitals, meanwhile, are Catholic-affiliated and won’t partner with abortion providers on religious grounds.

It would be very difficult for any hospital in the country to have a doctor who performs abortion on staff or even to give them “admitting priviledges”.

Merger Watch has a good take on one facet of this issue.

Then you would have the whacko’s crying ‘federal funds’ —AS NEARLY every hospital takes federal funds in some form or another.

Some progress in an old story:

PROSECUTOR: 2 EX-AIDES TO RON PAUL INVOLVED IN ‘COVER-UP’

A federal prosecutor says two top aides to Ron Paul’s 2012 presidential campaign were involved in a “cover-up” when they tried to hide payments to a state lawmaker who agreed to endorse their boss.

Justice Department attorney Jonathan Kravis made the comments Tuesday during opening statements in the trial of Jesse Benton and Dimitri Kesari.

Kravis says email records and testimony will show the men concealed payments to former Iowa Sen. Kent Sorenson after the lawmaker jumped from the Michele Bachmann campaign to the Paul campaign before the January 2012 Iowa caucuses. Paul, a former Texas congressman, is expected to testify during the nearly two-week trial.

[…]

I wonder how the trial will end?

You know, there was a time when, despite crime rates were higher than now and rising, there was not the level of fear among gun owners, such that they needed to have a loaded gun within arms reach at all times day or night. The NRA is really no longer anything but the advertising and lobbying arm of the firearms and munitions industry.

Despite there being more guns and ammo sold than ever before, the percent of households with guns has declined, so it’s really just selling MORE guns to people who already HAVE guns. Can’t do that without making them afraid for their lives and/or their women. So now, the people who think they need a gun for defense think they need a REALLY BIG gun for defense and they need it RIGHT THERE, ALL THE TIME!!!!!

This is why the push for ‘Constitutional Carry’, or for guns in every damn place you can think of, because the NRA and the gunmakers are selling not protection, but rather FEAR.

I agree, it has gotten well past the point of seriousness.

stockpiling of weapons for the end of all fan hitting shit is just paranoid idiocy. Having the ammo necessary for end times is beyond any diagnosis I can think of.

I wonder how many of those guns make their way south to the city all gun lovers use as an excuse for no gun controls…Chicago?

re: #44 Backwoods_Sleuth

Downstairs you had a question about pellet stoves and I noticed nobody replied. I have one so here’s my comments. I have a pellet stove that was built into my old fire place. I like it but up here in AK the cost of using the pellet stove just about equals the cost of heating oil to run my hot water base-board heating system. Up here the pellets cost about $7-8 per 40# bag ($350-$400/ton). When I used the pellet stove as the only heat source I burn about half a bag of pellets a day. My house is about 2,000 sq. ft. A couple of tons of pellets would probably cover me for the prime heating season. That’s about 2 pallets so you will need some storage space.

Some other things to think about: My stove uses 120 volt electricity to operate the auger and the built in fan. If the electricity goes out so does your heat source. Many newer pellet stoves use a 12 volt system using a converter to reduce 120 v to 12 v. These units usually include a 12v deep-cycle battery built into the system to operate the stove when the power is off. Up here our power company is outstanding as the power is never off for more than 1 1/2 hours so I don’t worry about it.

One other consideration. If you’re going to be away from the house for more than a day you’ll need an alternate heating system or have someone stop by and add pellets to the hopper.

I like the atmosphere the stove produces. A nice flame with only about a dozen pellets burning.

We have a similar problem. It’s not that my folks are that extroverted - they’re not - but they don’t seem to understand that when we’re quiet and playing on our phones, we’re not trying to be anti-social. We just don’t really have the ability to carry a conversation and it’d be awkward to just sit silently and twiddle our thumbs. I get that it’s generally rude to be wired to a computer/phone/tablet when you are a guest, but it’s not like that.

Christmas should be fun; we are away in fish country this year. Thankfully, fishfolk never visit here for longer than a 3-day long weekend.

One sister and her husband are visiting in early November, and then a brother and his wife around Thanksgiving. I really like having them visit because when we get together outside the Ancestral Home, we’re all equals, all grownups. At Dad’s place, there’s a natural tendency to revert to old patterns. There are disadvantages to being the youngest of 6. But I love spending time with my siblings!

But Mrs. FBW grew up in a very small family. Her folks divorced when she was 9, so her family memories consist of herself and her depressed, anxious, and almost certainly Aspergerian Mother, with her brother sometimes there and sometimes with their Dad, basically shuffled back and forth when he got to be too much for one or the other. So she doesn’t really have happy family memories, and while she loves my family, it’s not quite the same as having grown up together.

I lost all interest in televised team sports when all the strikes were happening. Well, to be fair, I lost all interest in televised baseball when the Orioles still had two players named Robinson. Football, though, I followed through the 1970s into the 1980s, then lost interest.

Any other televised sport? Meh. Cycling, only the mountain stages of the TdF are interesting. Otherwise it’s an hour of ‘Will the Peleton catch the Breakaway?” Yeah. It will. Within a half mile of the finish. Every goddam time.

My preference would be shorter, but with cross-country flights being what they are…

This may actually have been the last time they come out here. It’s getting extremely difficult for them to manage the plane flights. Alternate plans are in discussion for next year, like meeting them in FL and taking a cruise.

Grand Canyon.

Let’s hear it for that old time religion, just like in the bible.

Mother, father and other parishioners arrested after son is beaten to death in NY church: police

Police in New Hartford said on Tuesday that a mother and father had been charged with killing their son in a New York church. Four other church members were charged with assault, and the couple’s second son was also found badly beaten.

According to the Utica Observer-Dispatch, 19-year-old Lucas Leonard died on Monday after being dropped off by family members at Mohawk Valley Health System’s St. Luke’s campus “from injuries to his stomach, genitals, back and thighs.”

Christopher Leonard, 17, was reportedly hospitalized with similar injuries.

Bruce Leonard, 65, and Deborah Leonard, 59, were charged on Tuesday with first-degree manslaughter.

Four others were charged with second-degree assault: 26-year-old Joseph Irwin, 26-year-old David J. Morey, 54-year-old Linda R. Morey and 33-year-old Sarah L. Ferguso.

Police determined that the victims suffered blunt force trauma at Word of Life Church. The church lists Bruce Leonard as one of its original trustees. The Leonards’ residence was being investigated as a secondary crime scene.

re: #154 HappyWarrior

I have tried but I’ll never get into hockey. I do need to go to a game one of these days though.

Once you go to a live game your attitude will change. Keep in mind they play 80 games a year…burn their energy skating up and down the ice like madmen for a couple minutes at a time before a shift change…pound on each other and slam each other into the boards like footballers…and still have the ability to somehow pick a little hunk of rubber off the ice with a stick and slam it into the net sometimes in a space you can’t even see.

If you think other sports have athletes, hockey players should get your attention. I bet some of those big tough footballers would be dead before the first period is over.

And Klys…The Blue Jackets are not starting out well…at all. Sigh. The coach was real pissed at them yesterday, as were the fans.

Very quick attempt at a drinking game:

Sip for the words Bush, infrastructure, radical, gun control.
Drink for the phrases “secretary of state,” independent, deficit, Romney.
Chug for the word email, twice if not used by the moderator. (That’s not part of the drinking game, it’s a coping mechanism.)

It’s not funny to those of us who are sane and rational. For people who delight in cruelty and whose sole source of security is (their own or someone else’s) strength, they laugh.

re: #205 Decatur Deb

We have - and Amtrak does have accessible rooms, for the record. The issue with Amtrak is that one of the beds is, by necessity, a top bunk - which rules it out for his mom. Some of the ones in Canada are daytime only, which extends the trip but clears that issue, so it’s not impossible, but I don’t know how interested they would be at this point.

His dad has slowly been losing mobility over the past few years, so this isn’t terribly surprising. We’re trying to take steps to make that transition easier for them. (He’s been in the wheelchair since well before I met mr. klys, but he used to be able to do short distances on crutches and that has been disappearing.)

Still looks like they would have to book two cabins in order to have two lower beds. Same situation as Amtrak. :/
