Democrats’ Debate: Thread the First

Liberal cage match
Politics • Views: 49,259

I admit I was a little surprised to learn they actually rustled up five Democratic candidates to debate each other tonight:

Hillary Clinton
Bernie Sanders
Martin O’Malley
Lincoln Chafee
Jim Webb

If nothing else, this will be a good chance for everyone to be reminded how much they dislike Jim Webb.

CNN isn’t making an embeddable live stream available, but you can watch it at their website even if you don’t have a cable TV account. The festivities are scheduled to begin at 5:30 pm Pacific/8:30 pm Eastern.

From the previous thread:

Very quick attempt at a drinking game:

Sip for the words Bush, infrastructure, radical, gun control.
Drink for the phrases “secretary of state,” independent, deficit, Romney.
Chug for the word email, twice if not used by the moderator. (That’s not part of the drinking game, it’s a coping mechanism.)

What will be worse, watching the debate or sitting through an Auditing lecture?

The game is afoot, Watson. Let us hope that the Democrats, as opposed to their stupider brethren across the aisle, don’t end up trying to out-derp each other.

Since I can’t get CNN to stream on my computer I’m checking out CNN’s Facebook page.

Supposedly they were going to live stream the video on their news feed there, but I can’t find it.

Not a good start.

*********************************************************

Another anecdote—from a book that was published by the academic Texas A&M University Press in March and has received far less attention than it deserves—documents Webb’s insistence on staging his elaborate 1987 installation ceremony at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, smack-dab in the middle of exam week.

Webb, an Annapolis alum, had briefly taught at the Academy in 1979 as a writer in residence, but was bounced from the faculty after making politically incorrect comments concerning women serving in the military. (He was against it.)

Untermeyer quotes General P.X. Kelley, then commandant of the Marine Corps, as encountering a “Marine-option midshipman” who “pleaded with him to get ‘the coronation of King James’ switched from Exam Week.”

Untermeyer continues: “When P.X. carried this message to Webb, Jim’s eyes narrowed, and he said, ‘Those bastards kept me off the campus of my own alma mater for three years, and I’m going to make them suffer.’”

Of course, “the ‘bastards’ in question were long gone,” Untermeyer writes, “and the sufferers were the poor middies who had to participate in the ceremony. Barbara Kelley [the commandant’s wife] said succinctly: ‘The jackass.’”

And I agree with that. Why use their dog whistles? Rephrase it the way we should be talking about it. I support “gun regulation”. Even though the word “regulation” gets the RWNJ’s foaming, it is easier to link it to the Constitution.

EMAILS!! CHUG!!

Hillary’s answer is better than mine, but that’s because my answer would involve rearranging Anderson’s face and limbs.

Something about the media’s out-of-touch fetishization of “scandal” over substance.

Black Lives Matter. Sanders really seems to have given this serious thought. Good for him. Education and jobs rather than jail cells.

OT : I saw that the deranged furby/skidmark hybrid Chuck C Johnson has been having a particularly outstanding week. Hilarious stuff, but he’s on a track that will take him way past the maximum safe level of butthurt, if he isn’t there already. I sincerely hope the right people are keeping an eye on him, in case he gets all mass-homicidey.
