Kazakhstan… Texastan… what’s the difference really?

Leading Kazakh prelate speaks of ‘smoke of Satan’ at 2014, current synods

The leading prelate in Kazakhstan said in an October 10 speech to the Synod of Bishops that “during the Synod last year, ‘the smoke of Satan’ was trying to enter the aula [ed: court] of Paul VI.”

Voice of the Family, a coalition of pro-life groups, stated on its website that it was publishing Archbishop Tomash Peta’s synod intervention with his permission.

The archbishop of Astana identified the smoke of Satan with “the proposal to admit to Holy Communion those who are divorced and living in new civil unions; the affirmation that cohabitation is a union which may have in itself some values; the pleading for homosexuality as something which is allegedly normal.”

The Russian Orthodox Church had to slap a limit on how many times they’d let a widower remarry, because they routinely beat their wives to death in lieu of divorce.

How did your first husband die?
-He ate poison mushrooms!
And your second husband?
-He ate poison mushrooms.
How did your third husband die?
-He was hit over the head with a shovel!
How did that happen?
-He didn’t want to eat his mushrooms!

Some good news here out of Ostrava:

City representatives in Ostrava have approved the signing of a deal for the sale of plots at Mošnov to South Korea’s Hyundai Mobis for 69 million crowns, where the firm plans to build a factory for the production of car headlights. The company will recover its investment through subsidies, the city’s mayor, Tomáš Macura, said. The contract is to be signed within a few days; production of the new plant could begin in the near future, the Czech News Agency said.

69 million Kč is about $2.9 million.

God bless free-market socialism!

It’s a pretty common practice here - basically, a bribe for a large company to come and set up shop and employ the locals. The unemployment rate here is around 10%, which is at least nowhere near as bad as it was around 2004, when it was hovering around 20%. Still the region (Moravian-Silesia) has one of the higher unemployment rates in the Czech Republic. The capital, Prague, is the polar opposite - their UE rate is only around 2 or 3%, pretty much full employment. Overall, the Czech Republic’s UE rate is currently at 5.9%.

Here’s the most recent stats (end of September 2015) from the Ministry of Labor:

Pallywood keeps churning obvious lies:

Ynet: IN PICTURES: “Murdered” Teenage Terrorist Alive and Well

Photos emerge of Ahmed Mansra, who stabbed and seriously wounded two Israelis, one of them a boy his age, after Palestinian President Abbas made claims he was ‘executed’ by Israel; English translation of the speech done by PLO, however, tempers language to ‘shot in cold blood.’

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and the Arab media have been claiming since Monday that 13-year-old Ahmed Manasra, who was documented committing a terror attack in Pisgat Ze’ev this week, has been “executed” by Israel.

Except that Dr. Asher Salmon, the deputy director of the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem’s Ein Karem, said Thursday that the boy is alive, and is in light-to-moderate condition. Photos of Mansra from the hospital were released to support those statements.

“I want to report on the situation of the Palestinian teen who was involved in the stabbing in Pisgat Ze’ev,” Dr. Salmon said. “He’s being properly treated. Medically, I believe we could discharge him in the next few days.” A Jewish 13-year-old boy and a 21-year-old were seriously wounded in the attack perpetrated by Mansra and another, 15-year-old, Palestinian teen

Abass is doing the same old thing that Arafat did for years - saying once inciting thing in Arabic to the Palestinian populace, and something almost entirely different in English to international audiences.
In this case, he spoke repeatedly in Arabic on how Israelis are deliberately executing Palestinian children like Mansra, while the English version of the very same speech published abroad wiped away the ‘deliberate execution’ part, replacing it with ‘shooting in cold blood’.
Both versions of the speech were published more than a day before the Israeli press release showing the murderous little abomination was alive and in better state by far than his victims - though there’s no way the Palestinian Authority didn’t learn of his exact condition prior to that…

Belief vs. fact. He believes Carson was right, even though the facts show otherwise.

When entire armies failed to stop Hitler, no amount of Jews with guns would have stopped him. Of the 6 million Jews murdered in the Holocaust, 5.8+ million resided in territories invaded/captured/acceded to the Nazis. Those are territories that were defended by armies - armies with guns, lots of guns. Guns of all sizes. And tanks. Planes. Submarines. Ships.

Oh, and that Warsaw Ghetto Uprising isn’t proof that guns can hold off the Nazis either. The outcome was the same - liquidation and death. The manner and choice of death was in defense of their lives instead of being slaughtered directly or starved to death. But dead they still were/are. Jews weren’t about to become an insurgent army with assistance from outside. They weren’t going to go all Wolverines! not when most Europeans didn’t mind the Jews going into the dustbin of history too. Some were all too helpful in that task too. Antisemitism has a lot to do with that too (and ahem, Christian Antisemitism at that).

The bolded is something that so many Christians like Carson refuse to admit. The Nazis wouldn’t have been able to do what they did without the long culture of Antisemitism that Christianity had a big role in shaping.

Dumb cop leaves gun in restaurant washroom, where it is found by a 5-year old girl. This one didn’t make national news because the girl had been taught well enough to know not to touch the gun but instead she went and told her mother.

Smart mom and girl who listened kept a bad thing from becoming worse. But that cop should be given a long suspension, if not fired outright. Suppose some asshole criminal had found the gun and then used it to kill someone.

An economy so awful:

Gold futures wavered in early trading Thursday as a batch of slightly better-than-expected economic reports delivered a more optimistic view of the U.S. economy.

A reading of jobless claims showed that people applying for U.S. unemployment benefits fell by 7,000 to 255,000—its lowest level since 1973.

FoxNews, where up is down, would find reason to make this out to be bad news.

It’s a 42 year low. Lower than during Begin, Reagan, or Palestine. Lower than Ayatollahs in Iran and Russians in Afghanistan. Lower than during Watergate or Punk Rock. /we didn’t start the fire.

Why is it that the U.S. has to be the ONE country to fix Afghanistan?

Is it because we helped mess it all up when we didn’t concentrate on the real job of getting rid of Bin Laden and AQ?

We are stuck in a vicious cycle that even you admit by saying it will take “the work of decades.”

Is it typical conservative world view that we blow our treasury on stupid wars in countries that may never ever change, but can’t spend a dollar on things like American Health Care?

Where is the rest of the world in all of this? This is all so damn frustrating.

I have yet to watch. Is this a Netflix series? I don’t have the “streaming” membership. Not sure it’s worth getting yet. I like that Amazon Prime allows me to stream their shows, although I haven’t watched any yet. But the show Bosch—based on the Michael Connelly novels—looks good.

Bosch is very good although I do have a problem disassociating Bosch from Lost’s Man in Black. Anyway, it got me started reading Connelly’s Bosch books. Four down, and a bunch more to come.

Shopper fires gun at alleged shoplifters in Elkhart Big R parking lot, police say

Big R employees were chasing two suspects who were shoplifting, police say. A shopper joined the chase, yelling at the suspects to stop. When the suspects entered a vehicle, the shopper drew a handgun and fired one shot at them, police say.

The suspects accused of shoplifting got away, and a shell casing was found in the parking lot.

The person who shot the gun was brought to the Elkhart Police Department for questioning and then released, police say.

I can’t keep up with the threads these days, so I wonder if anyone saw the interview Chuck Todd did with John Kasich on his campaign bus traveling through New Hampshire. Once again Kasich tries hard to be a moderate sensible politician and he does that in the interview.

He takes Hillary to task for saying she was proud of the fact that she made enemies with Republicans in the debate the other night. He bitches about the fact that to fix all that needs to be fixed both parties are needed.

Yeah, it all sounds good.

But he dances away from the question about his own party having issues with the House Speaker position. That is disingenuous at best. This is typical Kasich. He doesn’t acknowledge he cut the Dems out of several of his early moves when he became Ohio governor. He sure as hell didn’t work with them.

He does a decent bit on Trump. You can tell he doesn’t want to kick the Trump bee hive for fear of getting stung so he talks about why Trump is getting the poll numbers. His take(paraphrasing): People when they are sick and frustrated often go to crazy alternative medicine out of that frustration. Then they find out it doesn’t work and they are back to the real doctors.

Yeah that’s a good line John. Are you really doing anything to explain that to the GOP base or are you waiting for the base to grow a brain and then come kiss your rings?

This is John Kasich. One minute sounds like a reasonable guy, the next going full bore ass and sticking a knife in you.

By the way. Johnny is supposed to roll out his idea for a budget. He is known for being a budget wonk and he is often credited for working Congress to the balanced budgets during the Clinton administration and is probably counting on the release to bring his numbers up. Good luck on that.

Yes, but “using the media to your advantage” isn’t a bad thing in and of itself. And yes, it should be Medicaid, not Medicare. But the fact remains the GOP is determined to repeal Obamacare by any means necessary, and the GOP hasn’t given up the ghost.

50+ attempts to repeal so far, and they’re no closer to a repeal.

At the same time, uninsured rates have dropped, but the states that would benefit most from the Medicaid expansion have refused to do so - meaning millions of people aren’t getting covered, and the GOP would rather that they don’t get covered.

That’s a cost borne by all taxpayers, and harms the health of those living in those states. Oh, and those states that refused to expand Medicaid also happen to have some of the worst health outcomes anywhere in the nation.

It also ignores that states would end up saving money in the long term as Medicaid expansion would reduce health care costs overall. They’re so concerned with the “fiscal responsibility” that they ignore that they are burdening families with higher health care costs and harms that can be reduced/avoided with insurance coverage.

Medicare also is problematic:
Congress and Obama Administration Seek Ways to Limit Increase in Medicare Premiums

WASHINGTON — Congress and the Obama administration are frantically seeking ways to hold down Medicare premiums that could rise by roughly 50 percent for some beneficiaries next year, according to lawmakers and Medicare officials.

The administration has criticized commercial insurance companies for seeking rate increases much smaller than that.

Aides to Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, the House Democratic leader, and Speaker John A. Boehner are quietly exploring a possible deal that would limit the expected increase in Medicare premiums.

“Congress has a responsibility to act,” Ms. Pelosi said by email on Monday. “If we do nothing, millions of American seniors will suffer. Democrats continue to press the Republican leadership to bring a fix to the floor so we can prevent the serious harm this increase will have.”

The cost of avoiding such big premium increases, $7.5 billion by some estimates, could be a problem for conservative Republicans. Aides to Mr. Boehner have told Ms. Pelosi’s staff members that the cost would have to be offset by savings elsewhere in the federal budget.

Sorry WZ, I rarely agree with Dark but I challenge you to give me an identical example where the Israeli government (which I loathe for the record) issued a statement/speech which was such a complete and utter lie as part of a deliberate attempt to stoke hatred and incite violence as the Palestinian Authority did in this case.

And as to your claim that both sides play the media to their advantage - as someone who worked indirectly with people who were involved in Israeli “hasbara” efforts as well as with folks from the public information branch of Israel’s foreign ministry ages ago, I can testify as to how BAD they are at using the media - and have been for quite some time.

In fact, if they were any good at all (and you’d think that would be the case in any government where Netanyahu, deemed a PR master at one time, was the presiding leader), the Palestinian side would never have gotten half of the support it’s had since the early 2000s and the days of the Second Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (aka the Second Intifada)…

You’re missing my point entirely - Israel never tried to use the media to make their case against the Palestinians the same way the Pals have for more than a decade, and when they do try to ‘play the media’ as you put it, it’s only ever in self-defense, to counter BS such as this (and is rarely effective). This isn’t a media war, as a war implies that both sides are taking offensive measures - which isn’t the case for Israel.

Ugly and despicable as that was (and remains), it in no way made an effort to justify violence and incite to harm or kill others - bit of a difference there.

Replace “Arabs” with “African-Americans” and it’s no different than loads of race-baiting bigots in the GOP since 2008 (and I’d wager where Bibi got his inspiration). Bad as it is, race-baiting and playing on fears as part of a political campaign is not the same as deliberately inciting towards violence against an entire population.

Are you serious?

re: #181 Dark_Falcon

Don’t change the subject but some Republicans have told such lies, yes. It would be better to blame the group that has been putting out those dishonest videos, but Carly Fiorina at least has latched onto them even though she should know better.

The main differences so far is that:

1. Those lying videos have not so far gotten someone killed.

2. It has not been shown that those putting out the videos are acting with intent to trigger terrorist attacks.

I have to go, but I’ll try to be back a little later. My dad needs my help while he works to recover from his health crisis.

Note that for 1, the group putting out the videos is associated with groups who have encouraged attacks on abortion providers. So it would append “yet” to that claim.

For 2, I think you are simply wrong. The whole “PP is selling babby parts” claim is in fact intended to generate a backlash. Given that the forced-birth groups have a history of attacking PP facilities and personnel, the recent arson attacks on PP facilities aren’t an unexpected result. The videos were intended to inflame groups who have already attempted to force their will upon others via violence and fear. Which is terrorism.

The videos were heavily edited to mislead and distort the truth. What was the purpose, if not to inflame an already volatile situation? And what result could be expected from doing so?

1. Not these videos specifically, but the group responsible for them sure has incited people to kill abortion doctors.

2. The whole damn point of these videos is to incite people to go kill anyone associated with PP.

Yeah. I feel bad for California. But, being in Ohio, it would be a bit of a relief to get a winter that isn’t quite as harsh as last year and then year before.

Now, if we could only figure out a way to send some of our snow/rain to California to help out!

OK, who stole David Brooks’ brain? He makes complete sense here.

The Republicans’ Incompetence Caucus

The House Republican caucus is close to ungovernable these days. How did this situation come about?

This was not just the work of the Freedom Caucus or Ted Cruz or one month’s activity. The Republican Party’s capacity for effective self-governance degraded slowly, over the course of a long chain of rhetorical excesses, mental corruptions and philosophical betrayals. Basically, the party abandoned traditional conservatism for right-wing radicalism. Republicans came to see themselves as insurgents and revolutionaries, and every revolution tends toward anarchy and ends up devouring its own.

By traditional definitions, conservatism stands for intellectual humility, a belief in steady, incremental change, a preference for reform rather than revolution, a respect for hierarchy, precedence, balance and order, and a tone of voice that is prudent, measured and responsible. Conservatives of this disposition can be dull, but they know how to nurture and run institutions. They also see the nation as one organic whole. Citizens may fall into different classes and political factions, but they are still joined by chains of affection that command ultimate loyalty and love.

All of this has been overturned in dangerous parts of the Republican Party. Over the past 30 years, or at least since Rush Limbaugh came on the scene, the Republican rhetorical tone has grown ever more bombastic, hyperbolic and imbalanced. Public figures are prisoners of their own prose styles, and Republicans from Newt Gingrich through Ben Carson have become addicted to a crisis mentality. Civilization was always on the brink of collapse. Every setback, like the passage of Obamacare, became the ruination of the republic. Comparisons to Nazi Germany became a staple.

Excellent point. The pols from those states are usually the first to bloviate about “California’s illegal immigrant problem.” Despite advances in farm mechanization, it still requires thousands of people to ensure the harvests. “California’s illegal immigrant problem,” is that we’re precluded by federal law from being able to give many of those workers a rational way to either become US citizens or to legally enter the US for seasonal/temporary work.

Arguably, it isn’t an incompetent caucus, but a fraudulent one. Their goals are clear - to destroy government. Anyone who stands in their way, including those GOPers who understand that politics and governance is the art of compromise, is the enemy. They’ve decided that sabotage is the method, even when they can’t achieve their goals.

And each iteration becomes more extreme in their demands even as the ability to obtain the outcome sought becomes more remote.

The fraud is that they are perpetuating this over the past few years by claiming that if only a few more GOPers fell in with them, they’d achieve all of their goals.

ThinkProgress: Second GOP Congressman Admits Benghazi Committee Was ‘Designed To Go After’ Clinton

A second House Republican has now conceded that the overarching purpose of the House Select Committee on Benghazi has been to attack former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

In September, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) argued that one of House Republicans’ successes has been using the Benghazi Committee to drive down Clinton’s poll numbers. Though McCarthy tried to walk back his controversial comments, Rep. Richard Hanna (R-NY) argued on Wednesday that the Majority Leader had it right to begin with.

“Sometimes the biggest sin you can commit in D.C. is to tell the truth,” Hanna said in an interview on Keeler in the Morning, a radio show in upstate New York. The third-term congressman paused for a moment, perhaps recognizing the importance of what he was about to say, before going on to agree with McCarthy’s original statement.

“This may not be politically correct, but I think that there was a big part of this investigation that was designed to go after people and an individual, Hillary Clinton,” Hanna said.

Expect GOP comments soon on how his words were taken out of context (as in “dude, you weren’t supposed to say that out loud!”)

A gun in the hand is worth the entire police force on the phone.

as long as you have the gun loaded, cocked and pointed at any and all potential assailants at all times…

The meme doesn’t even make sense in the first place. Are there really people who would choose living in a country with no functioning law enforcement over Western Europe?

There was mention that some of his donors are giving him a limited time to turn his numbers around. This may be belt tightening in the face of the inevitable.

Jeb!’s campaign is brain dead and should be allowed to die. Maybe the governor of Florida, the Florida legislature, and the Congress and Terri Shiavo’s parents should intervene and demand that he keeps his campaign alive no matter the circumstances.

STUPID GUNFUCKING MEME==>

[Embedded content]

I guess I shouldn’t bother to point out that Eliza Dushku is a pretty big feminist, and despite being a Mormon, her mom is the head of a feminist-Mormon organization (the actress herself left the church because of its stance on gays)?

Oh, you know, it’s the old thing of having to have a loaded gun within easy reach at all times, or you’ll be robbed, raped, and killed by a big black “urban” guy.

It’s just gun porno, doesn’t need to make sense, just something for a gunfucker to jack off to.

A lot of gunfucking memes are promos of actresses posing with guns from a movie scene, in a situation that has nothing to do with actual gun use in real life (the photo of Summer Glau from “Terminator” firing a pistol in each hand is a popular meme)

California remains in the top five states for all cattle and calf production. That makes little sense. Alfalfa and pasture take second and third place in agricultural water usage here.

I’d argue that it makes sense to those who live in fear of imminent home invasion, rape and murder by black men and illegal immigrants, or beheading by MOOOOZlimz, after years of being told on Fox News and by the NRA that violent crime is out of control, rather than falling for the last 20 years, and that ISIS is coming to your town.

Health Department warned Governor against cutting Planned Parenthood funds

SALT LAKE CITY — The state health department warned Gov. Gary Herbert that cutting funds for Planned Parenthood of Utah would be a bad idea and put some residents’ health at risk.

Among those reasons were that 4,400 patients would not receive STD testing, leading to long-term issues such as pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility, and that 3,725 people with chlamydia or gonorrhea and their partners would not receive treatment.

More incompetence from my Governor. They did this in Indiana and had an HIV outbreak.

In all of them, the woman is dressed like a Victoria Secret model. It really is lame. Really it’s porn for people who are too chickenshit to beat off to the real thing.

Just his way of stroking himself. Watch them all beg for him to stay in the debate, or if he doesn’t appear, ratings will plummet, and he will be bragging about it either way.

I do wonder if this drought is bad enough to get some of that production moved elsewhere. I imagine relocating that stuff might be such a pain in the ass that maybe another Dust Bowl would have to happen first.
I have no idea how much it would cost to have de-sal plants provide the majority of our agricultural water - maybe two, three orders of magnitude more than what is do-able?
