Fox News “Analyst” and Benghazi “Expert” Indicted for Lying About CIA Past

Fair and balanced and fraudulent

YouTube

Here’s an absolutely classic Fox News moment, as one of their regular guests, Wayne Shelby Simmons, who claimed he worked for the CIA for 27 years, was hyped as a national security expert, and frequently weighed in on Benghazi and other right wing issues with extreme and outlandish opinions, has been arrested and indicted for fraud.

Among other things, the indictment alleges that he never worked for the CIA at all and lied about it on background security checks.

Simmons was often described as a former CIA “operative” or “analyst” when he appeared on Fox News. He was also known to make outlandish-sounding claims, like that there are “at least 19 paramilitary Muslim training facilities in the United States,” as he said in January.

In addition to allegedly falsely claiming he worked for the CIA from 1973 to 2000, the indictment accuses Simmons of lying on security background checks about arrests he claimed were connected to his CIA employment and that he “defrauded an individual victim out of approximately $125,000 in connection with a bogus real estate investment.”

That’s Simmons in the video above, speaking at the “Accuracy in Media Citizens Commission on Benghazi” in 2013.

“Accuracy in Media.” Excuse me while I LOL.

This story demonstrates how easy it is to hoodwink right wing media like Fox News, AIM, and Breitbart “News” (who also frequently cited Simmons as an “expert”). All a fraudster has to do is tell them what they want to hear, and wear a nice suit.

UPDATE at 10/17/15 1:34:19 pm by Charles Johnson

As you can now see above, “Accuracy in Media” is now deleting their videos featuring Wayne Simmons.

That’s pretty good, but let me show you how it’s done at WND when a con man preacher gets convicted of stealing the assets of elderly people through an insurance scam.

“Why did he plead guilty and let the Communist Democratic Party, which is using his tax dollars to illegally operate under a shadow Communist government within the US government by using the US government resources to illegally sift through the rank and file of Christians in the USA in a scheme to find those that they can file bogus charges against and prosecute them in their Communist activist courtrooms. He did more harm than good to the Christians by pleading guilty to something he was innocent of committing.”

That’s how you do it in Wingnuttia.

Yup, Yahoo officially closed shop on the old old OLD Geocities sites back in late 2009, though volunteers have kept an archive of the sites of old, at about 640GB of data - which really drives home how much digital realm has changed through the years, as you could now fit ALL of GeoCities on a single hard drive…

Zedushka has a collection of “House” episodes and he watches them over and over, sometimes falling asleep in front of the TV. As you no doubt are aware, it seems to me that there is something inherent in conservatives that gives them this inability to admit when their ideology is wrong. It’s not like “Hey this guy fucked up”, it’s he had ot be a closet Democrat just like Bush’s failings are explained by him being a RINO or Reagan’s pinned on the Democratic congress, etc. They love to talk about personal responsibility but they never take any when it involves their ideology. Conservatism is frankly a cult for many of them.

I spent a couple of days with Bill Cosby’s daughter, Erin, in ‘86 at a very small lake-house party on Lanier. While my wealthier friends were doing blow, Erin and I were swimming and talking in the lake. I never once acknowledged that I knew who her father was.

The drummer for the garage band I was in in high school played for Joey Mulland’s Badfinger for a few years (he’s played for Gin Blossoms and Tommy Keene, too).

And how come when a Dem does something utterly contemptible, we don’t realize that they were probably a GOP plant from the very beginning. Wise up people!!!!!

They were promoted by, or had connections to, Paul McCartney early on. But success was punctuated by suicide. So the band my friend played for was basically a cover band, even if Joey was one of the last members.

At the risk of a level of repetition that merits a drinking game…the basis of their epistemology is affiliation. Something’s true because a person who’s an in-good-standing group member said it.

If a statement that is “true” by the affiliation standard doesn’t hold when tested against reality, the choices are to

- abandon the entire epistemological framework that on-side equals True.

- claim that reality is wrong…since an on-side claim is True, any contradiction of an on-side claim must involve falsification and/or conspiracy to obfuscate.

- retroactively claim that the affiliation bond was a sham—the claimant was not Of The Body—so being on-side remains a measure of veracity.

Badfinger is one of those bands I am sure was appreciated if you were around for it but it’s one that most people my age don’t know.

I grew up loving Badfinger’s hits (although Come And Get It wasn’t much of a favorite), but I started picking up all their LPs in the cutout and used bins in the early 70’s. I’m not sure there’s a band with as sad a story as Badfinger. Their manager robbed them blind and the incredibly talented Pete Ham wound up hanging himself in his garage when he found out he was penniless. The bass player hung himself a few years later. Just a horrible story of things gone wrong. Such a good band.

edit: I responded to HW without reading down. I see others have this covered already. I’m still a big fan of the band.

This time it’s about the old human teeth found in China.

I will also note that there are tinges of the outdated but still existing Chinese nationalistic theories of human evolution that has gotten interwoven with this story.

And, I think part of the problem is that people seem unable to realize that more than a couple of humans lived simultaneously in the past. The whole Adam-Eve mythos is more deeply entwined into our western thinking that many writers are aware.

OT: my friend who played with Badfinger for a few years played with the Bay City Rollers for a few days. Their last tour, probably only one original member by this time in the late ’80s, ended in Illinois. The “last remaining member” and the manager tried to run with the door money. A friend of mine tackled the manager when my bandmate realized he was about to get ripped off.

Joey at least flew him to gigs, but my friend said it was basically playing for B-level biker gangs.

The song was written and sung by Pete Ham and produced by George Harrison,[1] who plays some of the slide guitar parts of the song along with Ham.[2] The record also features Leon Russell on piano. As the song was unfinished at the time Harrison left the Badfinger album to produce the Concert for Bangladesh, the final mix was done by Todd Rundgren, who took over Straight Up after Harrison’s departure.

The polar bears are coming to town

For 15 years, Irish anthropologist Martina Tyrrell has studied the relationship between humans and animals in Arviat, an Inuit community on the west coast of Hudson Bay, where the townspeople are increasingly having to cope with a large and dangerous visitor - the polar bear.

It’s a Sunday afternoon in mid-October. I’m standing near the cemetery at the eastern end of Arviat, with a handful of other people. All eyes are fixed on the newly formed sea ice where a polar bear bellyflops into the sea, hauls itself back on to the broken ice, and bellyflops again.

Inuit men and women, accustomed to close encounters with polar bears, seem to be no less in awe of this creature than I am. There are gasps of delight at the bear’s antics, and informed discussion about its age, size and sex - and the reasons why it is behaving like this.

This is the seventh or eighth bear I have seen in as many days. Daily, I join townspeople on the dock near my house. Binoculars are passed around as we watch a mother bear and two yearling cubs on the snowy slope on the far side of the inlet.

I haven’t really followed the series. I turned the game on in the 8th. :)

I’m a hoops fan. But it’s nice to see the Mets win something after being mediocre for so long.

thus it’s impossible to hold ‘conservatives’ accountable for the disasters of the bush administration since retroactively it turns out “he was a liberal”

Everything is either Clinton’s fault or Obama’s fault. It’s like Bush never existed.

OMG I love the Cars! What an amazing pop/new wave/rock amalgam. They were one of those bands I had to buy the album the day it was released.

And on another note, I have been happily listening to the remastered Zep albums on my walks this week. Fantastic!

It’s never nice to see the Mets win anything. It could be worse. It could be the Cowboys.

The last MLB game I ever went to was a Mets game, at Shea the night before they went on strike. They lost, and a young pitcher named Anthony Davis set a MLB record for consecutive losses that night.

Haven’t seen a big league game since, but I’ve got a AA team playing three blocks from my house so I go there if I want to see a game.

I don’t like the Ric Ocasik vocals. But note, his wife for 30 years is that woman in the video. Paulina Porizkova.

Like Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall. There are so many…not terribly attractive rockers with drop dead gorgeous model wives.

Just stopping by to say hi—one more day—of course, it’s a day that begin at 4:10 am, but at least it’s the last day of this project. Horrible hours, but a wonderful client with great people at every turn.

Then there’s my boss. I’ve been on the road for 16 days, working10-17 hours a day—he’s in his office, fretting about future jobs.

Our conversation today:

Boss: So, today’s Friday.
Me: No, today’s Thursday.
Boss: So you’re leaving tomorrow.
Me: No, I’m leaving Saturday morning.
Boss: So, you’ll be shipping everything Saturday.
Me: No, I’ll be shipping things tomorrow. You need to tell me how you want it shipped.
Boss: Gotta run, I’m picking somebody up at the airport. Oh, can you email all the data sheets to that guy—you know who I mean—I don’t have access to my email.

Arrggh

I sat in my living room with one of my bestest friends of more than 3 decades (who will be 81 in a couple of weeks) a month or so ago as we both learned how to text on our respective first time smart phones. We were more like little kids with new toys than old dogs learning new tricks as we texted each other over a 2 foot distance.

Hey we may be slow but we get there eventually!

Since the Phillies decided around April 28th that they weren’t really into this whole “winning” and “playing competently” stuff, I’m officially all “Who cares?” about baseball.

That said, I have a soft spot for the Cubs. I hope they go all the way. Pounding the shit out of the Mets would be a nice bonus.

Y’all realize the worst part of this story is where he got the interim security clearance to be an adviser to a senior military official, right? I mean Fox is gonna Fox, but how bad are those jokers at CCF to take his ‘I got a bunch of arrests, but don’t worry about them because I TOTES was doing clandestine work for the CIA when I got them’ at face value?

re: #180 klys (maker of Silmarils)

As someone born and raised in NYC during the 70’s, I have a theory that if someone grew up in NY during the 60’s, they’re a Mets fan; if they grew up in NY during the 70’s, they’re a Yankees fan.

The fact that the ballcap logos are identical except for the color was a key factor in my parents scamming me into accepting a cheap and easy-to-find Mets cap when I was a Yankees fan; they said that the gold color meant you were an “extra-special Yankees fan”.
