Sen. Bernie Sanders describes himself as a “democratic socialist,” with a political philosophy similar to those of countries like Denmark and Sweden, where this form of socialism has been a proven system of workable government for many years. It’s not communism, folks, and it has nothing in common with the totalitarian dictatorships of the Soviet Union or Maoist China.

That’s what makes the latest attack by far right Sen. Rand Paul especially dishonest and creepy, because he not only compares Sanders explicitly to Mao and Pol Pot, he says electing Sanders will lead to “mass genocide.” Political attacks don’t get much more extreme than this, and this sort of rhetoric cheapens and demeans the gravity of the word “genocide.”

“It amazes me and it actually kind of scares me,” Paul said. “I’ve been spending more time going after Bernie and socialism because I don’t want America to succumb to the notion that there’s anything good about socialism. I think it’s not an accident of history that most of the times when socialism has been tried that attendant with that has been mass genocide of people or any of those who object to it. Stalin killed tens of millions of people. Mao killed tens of millions of people. Pol Pot killed tens of millions of people. When you have a command economy, when everything is dictated from one authority, that’s socialism, but it doesn’t come easily to those who resist it.”

What struck me was that it was a question about an accomplishment that one was most proud of. Granted, it was about an enemy one was most proud to make - apparently he only heard the word “enemy” and went instantly to “kill it.” No matter how I try to parse his answer to make it more palatable, I can’t. It has nothing to do with the appropriateness of his action on the battlefield during a war 40 years ago and everything to do with how he felt that answer was appropriate for that question right now.

Yeah, they all seem to ignore that folks with low income pay a higher percentage of their income/savings to goods/services than those who are rich.

You’d need to standardize definitions and treatment of goods and services. The Streamlined Sales Tax Project shows the limitations of even that, as some of the member states tax some stuff, but not others. And then you’d have to expand the tax base sufficiently or else the tax rate would be even higher than the 30% that would be a minimum so as to equal revenue from the departed income tax.

It is, in a word, BS. The tax rate would mean that on a car purchase, you’d be paying 30% more for the car - on top of the already existing taxes and fees.

You’d also force every state that piggybacks on the IRC to amend their laws to conform to the IRC before it was repealed, or else institute their own law (and that’s most states that have income taxes).

Sales taxes aren’t so easy to administer - just ask the states that have them. And there’s lots of rules promulgated to address them too.

Once you start talking about carve outs for food and other basics, because that’d affect the poor, other groups start demanding their own carveouts, and pretty soon you’ve got a scheme with all manner of reduced tax rates, exemptions, or other deductions that starts to look as complex as the IRC that they’re all clamoring to replace - because they know that a sales tax would be a massive tax cut for the rich.

Create a larger poor population and you create tons of social problems that in today’s extremely mobile world affects even the well off.

That won’t happen now.

Going OT, sort of, though this kind of speaks to some of the things Bernie Sanders talks about, and I need to vent. Grrr.

My son just finished up a program for adults with varying disabilities. He spent the last 6 months working in a store of a major grocery chain. Not as an official employee of that company but through the state via this program. Even though he trained and wore the uniform. The state paid his salary through this program. They also helped him prepare to put in an application for this chain online and gave him minimal coaching to help him through the interview process. He actually has been hired by the company now, which is good news. However this is what pisses me off to no end.

Before he can begin working he has to go through 20 hours of training at a facility over an hour from our home. To stock shelves for minimum wage. For less than 20 hours a week. The average will be 2-3 days of work a week, maybe 8 hour shifts probably less. He has been working in one of their stores for SIX MONTHS already, why on earth should he have to go through all this? He and I both have severe anxiety related to driving in fast moving or heavy traffic and the times of his training coincide with some of the worst traffic times in an area of Metro Atlanta notorious for accidents and traffic delays. It means I will have to take him there and wait for 4 hours one day and 8 hours the other two days. I am not making this trip 6 damned times instead of three so I have to wait on him. And let’s just say my Husband is being an ass and really unhelpful on this. So two people with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, in a car flying through traffic ought to be a blast.

This kind of crap is why companies can’t “afford” to pay their employees decent money. I wonder how much this freaking training costs per employee? I worked in retail for 25 yrs. We never did this shit, we brought people in, schooled them on basic policies and then they learned on the job. We also got paid more than minimum wage. WTF? Doing some digging into other companies and most of them do this now? Again, WTF? This is not complicated work, it’s entry level work and learn as you go. I could see if it was for management, or even cashiering, but for a part time stock clerk who has been doing the job for 6 months? Sigh. And this is going to cost me money I don’t have in gas, we’re not doing well at all financially, my husband hasn’t held a job beyond a couple independent contractor jobs since July 5.

All the work and training my son did is being dismissed as nothing and not counting for anything and it’s pissing me off. Sigh. Scream. Throw something…..sorry, I’m so frustrated right now I want to smack someone.

Right. I really do think he’s a good choice. I really don’t see any honest drawbacks with him. Does anyone have any other good ideas? I really don’t think any of other opponents are good choices. I still believe that climate change is too slow for the collective human decision making process to act in a mitigating fashion. Which is why nothing of real substance has happened on the mitigating front.

That doesn’t mean I don’t think climate change is important to discuss in our public sphere.

Yet I think the best I can hope for is that over time enough of our society will act in a way to be proactive in building a better future than in the case of absolutely nothing being done.

My best case scenario is that adaptation strategies are put in place that actually work. And by “actually work” I mean keeping society together, staving off mass starvation, finding ways of relocating the displaced, etc.

The DNC has been grooming Julian Castro for higher office for years. I’m convinced the whole reason he was chosen to keynote the Democratic Convention in 2012 was because they were planning on running him for governor in 2014, which obviously didn’t happen. It’s no accident that he left for DC right after Wendy Davis won the state Democratic primary for governor. They got him out of Texas and gave him exposure to the how the federal government works, which he wasn’t going to get in another mayoral term.

Whoever gets the nomination would be stupid to pass him up as VP. He’d be a great choice.

One of the more disturbing trends, to me, is the rise of the so-called “fake” media, that is, vested party websites that appear to be like traditional news sites.

Now, this is not a totally new phenomena. Way back in the good ol’ days of paper there were plenty of magazines and news print periodicals that were dodgy but pretended to be real journalism.

And even if a “news source” isn’t completely dodgy it now seems naive writers and the total abandonment of good journalistic practices is now the norm:

Sales taxes aren’t so easy to administer - just ask the states that have them. And there’s lots of rules promulgated to address them too.

Once you start talking about carve outs for food and other basics, because that’d affect the poor, other groups start demanding their own carveouts, and pretty soon you’ve got a scheme with all manner of reduced tax rates, exemptions, or other deductions that starts to look as complex as the IRC that they’re all clamoring to replace - because they know that a sales tax would be a massive tax cut for the rich.

Oh, suddenly my head hurts.

Many years ago I had to create a program for handling orders for a bedding manufacturer. At that time here in Ontario we had a Federal Sales Tax (FST) and Provincial Sales Tax (PST).

Some of the manufactured items were FST exempt, some were PST exempt and some were both. Some customers were FST exempt, some were PST exempt and some were both. I believe a few of the manufactured items were exempt from exemptions.

Oh the fun I had trying to get the sales taxes to come out properly on each order.

Also note that sales taxes are inflationary. Sales taxes force businesses to spend time and money to calculate and remit those taxes. Time and money that takes away from the bottom line. So they raise prices to cover this nonprofitable activity.

That is a good point and I’ll point out he was mayor of a town so he does have some executive experience too. Obviously Burlington, Vermont is different than D.C in the kinds of interests nad personalities he’d have to deal with but it’s not like he’s never been in charge of a government before.

Burlington VT has more residents, and a more complicated budget, than Wasilla AK. And Bernie was able to the job he was elected to, he didn’t have to bring in a professional City Manager to do it for him.
