Texas Cuts Off Medicaid Funding to Planned Parenthood Based on Deceptive Videos

The Republican Party’s ongoing war on women’s health care
Politics • Views: 50,643

Texas Governor Greg Abbott is the latest far right Republican governor to try to cut off Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood based on the deceptive “sting” videos released by the Center for Medical Progress.

Here’s the order:

Scribd Document

Several other GOP-ruled states have also tried to terminate Planned Parenthood’s Medicaid funding, including Alabama, Arkansas and Louisiana, but these attempts are being challenged in court by the federal government — and we can expect the same to happen in Texas. The people this will really hurt are low-income women who are the main beneficiaries of Planned Parenthood’s Medicaid support, for services like breast exams and cancer screenings.

This is me, really trying hard not to conclude by saying how much the Republican Party absolutely sucks. Oops, I didn’t make it.

Really, what pisses me off and makes me sick about this — other than the fact that this is just another example of the War on the Poor & the War on Women — is that this is a political winner for Republicans.

How in the world can we have such a large part of our nation that actually WANTS this to happen?

Plus the fact that it’s based on a lie. I feel like basing any policy off of these dishonest videos should be an automatic disqualifier for public office

But it won’t be….reasonable people will just bend over and take it, and won’t show up to vote during off year elections again

Texas maintains the worst rate of uninsureds in the nation. And that is due in significant measure to the state’s refusal to expand Medicaid under the ACA.

27.1% are uninsured in the state. The national average is about half that.

So, they’re not only refusing to expand insurance coverage, but they’re harming access to the very health care providers that they’ve been trying to hound out of business by engaging in writing TRAP laws (the battle on that front continues in the courts) that are designed to target abortion providers with unnecessary safety measures, while plastic surgery centers, which have a far greater problem with complications, fatalities among patients, and aren’t nearly as regulated, goes unmentioned/unremarked upon by these so-called pro-lifers.

Once again, it goes to the heart of what the anti-choice extremists are seeking. Not only are they looking to outlaw abortion, but eliminating access to health care and reproductive health care options.

Abbott is a professional liar, a very accomplished one. He knows perfectly well that the “sting” videos are crude distortions.
I would go further and assert that most of his supporters know. They just represent that well-known element of society that conflates lying and cruelty with social status and power. We have a lot of these assholes in Texas. They are not poor, ignorant redneck dupes. I can understand and forgive that. They are a cult of facetious cruelty, a pathological sub-culture that has made its way into politics only because top liars like Abbott and his corporate masters have found a way to monetize it.

Trey Gowdy, had fabricated a redaction to Clinton’s emails to make it look like she’d endangered a spy, and the CIA had busted her. Gowdy even mimicked intelligence community vernacular, designating the redaction as undertaken to protect “sources and methods,” without disclosing that he was the redactor or that the CIA had cleared the name he redacted for release.

Hanlon’s Razor:

“Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.”

A good enough ad hoc rule but not applicable where an implausible level of stupidity is required, as in Texas politics. These people are flat out evil, driven by greed, lust, and a culture that glorifies lying and exaggeration, and excused by a fake religion that is no better than Caligula’s emperor cult. They are headed for the dustbin of history, though, for Texas will TURN blue. What a joyous time that will be. It will also inevitably be a time for payback and I am angry and disgusted enough that I might just enjoy that too.

“…The Obama administration has notified two states that took steps to halt Medicaid funds to Planned Parenthood Federation of America that they may be in conflict with federal law.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a unit of HHS, has notified Alabama and Louisiana, which have taken action to terminate their Medicaid provider agreements with Planned Parenthood, that they may be in conflict with federal law, HHS said. The agency said that, by restricting providers, women could lose access to critical preventive care, such as cancer screenings”.

Police doing wonderful things for African Americans, episode 9, 238:

This time, the recipient of Florida police altruism was a church musician who had a car break down on I-95 while en route from a gig…

A well-known Florida drummer, who doubled as the assistant manager of the Delray Beach Housing Authority, was shot dead by a plain clothes Palm Beach Gardens police officer in an unmarked car after his car broke down on the side of the road following a music gig Sunday.

Authorities, family members say, have refused to fully describe what happened during the early morning confrontation that left 31-year-old Corey Jones dead.

But a police statement released Monday afternoon said the officer, Nouman Raja, was “suddenly confronted by an armed subject” when he “stopped to investigate what he believed to be an abandoned vehicle” along an Interstate 95 exit ramp around 3:15 a.m. Sunday.

Raja was on duty and in plain clothes in an unmarked vehicle, according to cops. No details were released about the weapon Jones was allegedly armed with. For all we know it could’ve been a tire iron, a cell phone, his wallet, a pair of drumsticks, or his blackness.

The drummer was leaving a late night gig when his car broke down on I-95 near an exit ramp for PGA Blvd., authorities said. He called his brother to let him know about the trouble and to see if he could help him get a tow truck. Another friend actually helped get oil for the car with Corey, but it didn’t make a difference..

He was scheduled to be the lead drummer at his church just a few hours later. Church officials told the Daily News that Corey had never stood them up before and that they knew something was seriously wrong almost right away when he didn’t show up for church on Sunday morning and couldn’t be reached by phone.

In about 8 or 9 months, we will be told that he (pick any of the below):

1. Corey was black and it was dark
2. Corey asserted his rights aggressively
3. Corey had a water bottle
4. Cory had drum sticks
5. Corey was as strong as a demon
6. Corey reached for his waistband
7. Corey used his scary black powers to overwhelm the officer
8. The officer was afraid for his life.
9. Corey was running away.
10. Corey was armed with the pavement he was standing on.

OT Drive-by - Sorry for the interruption, but this is the best description I’ve seen of Da’esh to date, LOL:

Anti-ISIS Satire Lampoons Militant Group’s Hypocrisy : NPR

KRAIDY: And so one of the things that the parodies do is it portrays ISIS as this global death cult. They’re like a third warrior, a third religious fanatics and a third pirates or ninjas - these really weird creatures. You never know what to expect when they show up in a town. You know, you can get killed for smoking a cigarette, and this is something that all the parodies seem to mention. […]

The whole piece is pretty funny. Speaking of satire:

Satire In The Muslim World: A Centuries-Long Tradition : NPR

“Can’t they take a joke?” That’s the question that came up after the 2005 Danish cartoon controversy and now, again, after the massacre at the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. The suspected killers obviously reflect a tiny minority of extreme religious fanatics, but the question made us wonder: What is the role of satire in the Muslim world?

First let’s establish that saying “the Muslim world” is like saying “the Christian world” or Africa: We’re talking one and a half billion people all over the globe — of different races, ethnicities and languages — who believe different things. That said, Duke University religion professor Bruce Lawrence does have an answer when you ask him about Muslim traditions of satire. He says, “I’ve been studying the Muslim world for I guess now almost half a century, and one of my heroes has always been a ninth-century literary figure called al-Jahiz.” […]

Exactly!!! How can voters be so ignorant as to not see the relationship between family planning and Medicaid expenditures? After all, the GOP was once wholly in favor of birth control because it would lower the birthrate and expenses of the “criminal underclass”. I guess now that they own prisons privately they no longer want to reduce the numbers of people living in poverty who might resort to crime.

The Al Jazeera reporter told Gordon, who presides over four counties, that she spoke to numerous inmates who said they had waited for nearly a year to speak to an attorney, and those meetings lasted 10 minutes at most.

“Are you believing the statements of the defendants?” Gordon said. “They will tell you anything you want to hear.”

However, he admitted that, if those claims were true, the detentions may be violating the inmates’ rights — but the judge indicated he really didn’t care.

“Lady, the criminal system is a system of criminals,” Gordon said. “Sure, their rights are violated, but not all rights are violated that you’re calling violation.”

He dismissed the reporter’s assertion that law enforcement could verify the inmates’ claims, and he denied responsibility for denying counsel to jailed suspects — even though he admits that the policy was his own and not the state’s.

“Go talk to the governor, talk to the legislature — I do not have responsibility,” Gordon said. “I don’t have the time, and I don’t have the damn energy to do it all.”

And if Obama said something like this, we’d never hear the end of it.

Probably a good thing since he sure doesn’t come of as a Democrat.

Did Gawker file a venue motion too? Because I noticed that while Chuck’s opposition included the venue issue, the judge didn’t mention anything about it in his order. Also, you know the Chief Judges in both the Southern District of New York and the Eastern District of California have already called his chambers and told him, “don’t you fucking dare, we have real cases here.”

Chuck’s going to sue Burns for malpractice.

If Burns is doing it Pro Bono, what can Chuckie get out of it? Although, clearly it’s poor practice to have taken the case and filed the suit.

I’ll bet, though, that the reason the briefs were so long in the first place was Chuckie insisted on putting the kitchen sink in there.

re: #124 Eclectic Cyborg

Why give him yet ANOTHER extension?

Because the one thing judges don’t like is being overturned on appeal. And it’s entirely possible that the Circuit Court would be upset with the district judge striking a combined opposition and then dismissing the case. There is, generally speaking, a preference for cases to be decided on the merits rather than on procedure - which is typically why cases are rarely won on motions to dismiss (usually you can knock out some causes of action, or force the plaintiff to plead their facts better, but winning outright is rare).

I’m thinking they filed that steaming shitpile of a brief in hopes that the judge would do exactly what he did - give them a few days to clean it up, and it would buy them some time for Chuckles to find those Gawker memos that he’s so sure exist.

In a just world, Gawker will get to trounce CCJ and take his pocket lint, and his hack lawyer will face discipline for being a hack.
