Out of 2,470 total delegates at the Republican National Convention in 2016, 437 are unpledged delegates, who play the same role as superdelegates. Of the 437, 168 are members of the Republican National Committee.

these are the people who will cast the deciding vote at the republican convention and split the party

Been trying for the last two hours to pre-order tickets from Fandango - their service is borked beyond recognition right now - both with the regular website as well as with their mobile app.

Fat lot of good this VIP membership did for me.

edit: Finally got order thru via their Android app. 12:10 AM showing on an IMAX screen. I think I’m gonna take off work a little early that night.

Novelist of the bridge novel to the movies wrote:

I saw it in my own signings. The people who came up and had me sign books at 47 North or for Star Wars? Not a bunch of straight white guys. A lot of women. A lot of faces that were not my own. And some self-identified LGBT folks, too. That’s awesome. Awesome in a lot of ways. Awesome because the audience is bigger than anybody expected. Awesome because it’s expressive of a world that is not singular, not simple, that is far-reaching and full of variety and tons of people who don’t look or act at all like each other but still find common ground in cool stuff like Star Wars. And it’s also sad because, y’know, the content is not equal to the audience. The stories have not yet caught up to reality. That’s true on the page, on the screen, and behind the scenes with the creators and the executives and everything.

Bill and Opus for 2016!  Oct 19, 2015 • 8:16:48pm

After watching the trailer, there is going to be a LOT of speculation going on for the next two months.

The thing that stood out the most to me was:

The scene of the (I’m assuming) the lightsaber duel between Finn and Kylo Ren - in the scene Ren is seen from the rear, unmasked.
The hair style and color that we saw looked a whole lot like Anakin’s at the end of Revenge of the Sith. I wouldn’t put it past Abrams to have a Vader clone as the main antagonist.

Second thought - we have had three trailers now and have yet to see Luke Skywalker’s face.

Just food for thought.

The Thor thing was clueless, but this is purposeful shit-stirring using the nearest available big public event.

Also on the matter of the trailer, I’m pleasantly surprised to notice that after a teaser and two official trailers, we still have no clue what the heck is the exact plot for the movie. Just spent the weekend in Memphis with my wife and some dear friends. Checked out Graceland and Beale St but for me the best part of the trip was our visit to Sun Studios. The tour is not expensive at all and tremendously enjoyable for any music aficionado.
Standing in the Studio room itself (which is still used to record to this very day) was absolutely incredible. To think I was standing on the same hallowed ground that launched Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Charlie Rich, Jerry Lee Lewis and so many others was amazing. That room has an aura about it like I’ve never felt before. Here are some photos:

Best register sign ever!
And this is me, jamming with a microphone that was once used by the King himself!

And of course, this being Sun Studios, I had to come home with some swag…

To be pedantic, Luke’s hand as replaced following the duel and shown in both Empire and RotJ was relatively indistinguishable from normal flesh, unless the workings were exposed because of maintenance (end of Empire) or blaster shot (on the barge in RotJ, after which he put on a black glove).

Not saying it cannot be, because it certainly can (it is the correct hand). But it adds more questions than answers if it is Luke.

My guess? Luke’s lost, marooned on a planet, and he can’t be found, possibly because he led remnants of the Empire on a wild good chase before crashing and he doesn’t know where he ended up. And he ended up scavenging parts for (or from) his hand.

And without a living adept of the force, tales of Sith and Jedi faded into memory on the galactic scene….

My guess (and this is purely a WAG unsupported by any evidence) is that Luke, having seen the havoc the Sith and Jedi unleashed on the Galaxy went into a self-imposed exile, content to let the rest of the Galaxy recover and reform without interference. He’s been content to live alone (probably on Tatooine), communing with the spirits of Ben and Yoda and Dad becoming a true Jedi Master but will be drawn back into galactic affairs with the appearance of Kylo Ren and his group.

Again, that’s just a WAG, but it fits with the film’s title (the Jedi/Sith returning after having been inactive during all the intervening years).

Back in the day I attended the premiere of films like Mission:Impossible, Independence Day (that was a shit show), Starship Troopers (that was more fun, but still a shit show), and all the original Star Wars when they were remastered and re-released.

I don’t forget those experiences. It actually took away from the films’ experience for me. Instead of enjoying a film, I was distracted by laughter and chatter. And people cheering at climactic scenes, golly I hate that shit!

Only one time I saw a film on its opening weekend and thought it was great, South Park:Bigger, Longer, and Uncut. That film has a special place in my heart. It made me laugh at a time it was difficult to laugh at anything. I saw that film the Saturday after it opened, the next day I attended my grandfather’s funeral.

HAHAHA wow he went full Stormfront.

Is the very white Star Wars being culturally appropriated by the Jewish J. J. Abrams?

The mulatto Lando Calrissian betrays our heroes before he is redeemed.

The Israeli Natalie Portman plays Queen Amidala.

Space belongs to the people smart enough to invent rockets and indoor plumbing. It belongs to a frontier people, thank you very much. And now the frontier is flooded with the Third World, drowning out the ambitions of those white nerds.

Is it any surprise that we all pin our hopes on a white immigrant from South Africa to hopefully reopen the final frontier?

But SpaceX is grounded (for the moment) and so, too, will be a generation of young white boys (yes, they’re boys) who won’t be much interested in a version of the future where they are cast as the villain.

Somewhere in my past is a very hefty bandwidth bill incurred by my then-ISP because I hosted one of the first copies of “Troops” in my personal webspace when it went live on theforce.net back in 1997/98… That was not a fun experience.

I was on the Prequels bandwagon from the first released concept painting of a yellow ship docked at a building on Coruscant. All those years of buildup, imagining what they COULD be, and then they turned out to be what they were. I’ve been solidly soured on Star Wars fandom since then. I still love 4-5-6, and there are fragments of 1, 2, and 3 that I enjoy watching, but it’s hard to get over what could have been.

I consider those movies a valuable lesson in what can happen to successful creative people when they hit late middle age, when they have enough clout and experience to do great things, but they’re in too great of a position for people to reign them in and tell them “no”. That’s why Mad Max: Fury Road was so pleasing; there’s bad precedent for guys named George re-visiting their universe after decades doing other things.

I hope the new ones can recapture a little bit of the feeling of the old movies, of a fantasy universe full of absolutely silly, fun things, laid over a very sincere (if basic) mythological tale of good, evil, and the powers of intuition. I hope the good characters are good, the bad guys are great bad guys, and there’s lots of spectacular stuff in between, with a great soundtrack to fit.

The “Force Theme” still gives me a little chill.

Yep. Chuck worked for Dersh in high school. He met Alan when Alan came to speak at this prep school, which Alan’s son also attended. Chuck was picked to oppose Dersh in a mock debate and impressed him.

That’s what I meant yesterday when I said it was amazing how many solid connections he’s managed to blow through. Anybody with even a modicum of self control could have turned shit like that, his Breitbart connection, WSJ internship and Daily Caller gig into a reliable place at the wingnut welfare trough. Except somewhere along the line it all went wrong, and he could help being himself. He has no filter, no ability to self regulate, and eventually ends up either burning bridges overtly or just quietly being shunned by most of his erstwhile allies.

Try executing the house leaving as a ritual, and do it in stages. So do all the same things, get your wallet, coat, briefcase, put your shoes one … whatever you normally do when you go out alone, but do it consistently, and try to conduct the routine the same way each time so he can identify the pattern.

At first just open the door, go out, close it, then come right back in and greet the dog. Do this again and again, spending a little bit more time outside each time, go get the mail, then go for a very short walk just down the block, then longer and longer walks. Each time come back and greet him. Eventually he’ll get used to the idea that you going out is part of a ritual where you always come back and that everything is okay.

In fact, he’s confusing Star Wars and Star Trek, too. Check this paragraph.

Star Trek is a productive of a white America whether or not we want to accept it. The action figures that made George Lucas a billionaire were purchased by suburban white families.

Aside from the poor grammar (productive?), Lucas is to Star Wars as Roddenberry is to Star Trek.

I’ll attempt to reserve judgment for this one, but honestly was not impressed with the trailer. Big splashy graphics.. meh… if that’s the case just make this an animation.

Tell a good story, show us some great acting.. having an aged Han Solo is just a cheap gimmick.. like creating a pointless ‘extra scene’ with him in the new edition of episode IV.

Justin Trudeau says a Liberal government would get to work “right away” on a policy to legalize and regulate the sale of marijuana, but won’t commit to a timeline for legalization.

“We don’t yet know exactly what rate we’re going to be taxing it, how we’re going to control it, or whether it will happen in the first months, within the first year, or whether it’s going to take a year or two to kick in,” Trudeau said on Wednesday night in Surrey, B.C.

When asked by CBC News for a specific time on the rollout of the policy, Kate Purchase, director of communications for Trudeau’s campaign, said, “We haven’t released a time…. We want to get the best ideas from various places and construct a Canadian model.”

Purchase cited Colorado as one of many models the party is currently looking at.

In Colorado, an individual over the age of 21 is allowed to possess up to about 28 grams (one ounce) of marijuana for personal use.

ANALYSISIS: The upcoming Star Wars movie is mean to white people

Chuck C. Johnson, unconcerned by his legal setbacks, shares more of his deep thoughts about racial matters. We have our own version, and we like ours better.

Everybody is looking forward to the upcoming Star Wars VIII: The Force Awakens movie.

Almost everybody.

Some white boys are upset that the new movie, directed by a Jew, is not white enough. And I’m one of them, because I need the clicks. I may even boycott it, like the other white boys who need a life. Or maybe I’ll go and just not tell them, so they don’t kick me out of the club.

Not only is this new movie not white enough, it portrays white people as the enemy. Everyone knows white people have never done anything bad.

Plus, there are a lot of actors from loser nations, like Nigeria, Ireland and Canada. Since when did any of them go into space, huh?

What part of global in global warming does he not understand. Apparently all of it. The global part (it’s planetary temps, not just the temp outside your door), and it’s climate change with temperatures increasing on average around the entire planet.

It is undeniable that there’s temperature increases, just as surely as COx continues rising. Ocean temps are rising. So yeah, all of it.

Oh, and about freezes/frost warnings/early snowfalls - they happen with regularity too. Northern NJ tends to get it in October. NYC proper gets it towards the end of October (heat island effect, plus water moderation). But it can occur earlier or later - that’s what median (an average - the middle date) means (which is also a numerical average).

Not his face, at least. People are guessing that the cybernetic hand that pats R2-D2 in the second and third trailers belong to him.
Looking back at the trailer where we had the Hamill/Luke Skywalker voiceover - I’m surprised that no one has pointed out that was dialog that was lifted directly from Return of the Jedi, and very possibly may not be in the new movie at all.
So, it may be a safe bet that we know nothing at all about what is going on with Luke.

re: #211 freetoken

They have - in a similar pose to the one showing a masked (man) with a robotic hand laying/touching R2D2.

I’m going to go with that Luke was in that scene. JJ is being cagey about how they’re going to use him in the movie. We are going to get backstory from Han and Leia, but Luke is going to fall into the Yoda-type role, which sort of makes sense since he’s the “last” of the Jedi Order as far as we know from the original movies.

I loved the original trilogy, the prequels not so much, particularly the back story and how the CGI looked too comic-bookish.

The look in the new movie? The CGI looks to be more seamless/realistic with modeling-based practical effects. There’s something about doing the practical effects that CGI still can’t replace. CGI can enhance to be sure, but the look is more consistent with the original trilogy.

Well, it looks like Canada has decided conservatives don’t actually conserve anything useful, so there’s that.

Send a happy little thought my way today if you’re so inclined. It sounds dumb, but I am taking a big step today (not voluntarily) toward overcoming my anxiety about driving in a very busy place. Today is day one of several trips through one of the worst parts of Metro Atlanta traffic wise to take my son to job orientation classes over an hour away. A lot of this has to be done in the dark, which is not helping. I have no idea where this fear came from, because honestly it’s the only real fear I have. Well that and homelessness, btdt, and The Husband’s unemployed status isn’t helping either. We’re about out of money, which is most likely contributing to today’s anxiety. I know I can do this, it’s not the driving so much as it is lots of cars and going to unfamiliar territory. I’ve driven out of the city and to rural places far away with no problems, so it’s the traffic (and fear of getting lost, resulting accidents, etc) that’s the problem. I do have a GPS and printed directions and a full tank of gas, so I know I’ve prepped all I can. I HATE having GAD, it makes me feel like a dumbass. Plus, I don’t want my anxiety to interfere with my son’s learning to drive, but I’m afraid it has a little already. (and do NOT get me started on The Husband’s lack of participation in that process, OMG) Anyhoo, keep us in your happy thoughts today. Tonight, training is from 5-9 and then the next two days are full, regular work day hours. Thanks Lizards. I can’t talk about this with anyone but my Mom, because no one understands.

Central Oregon Coast NOW shared Sue Gibson’s post.
11 hrs *
Written by a national NOW board member and friend - terrific letter!

Sue Gibson
20 hrs *
My reply to Rep. Moon’s form letter:
Mike,
Thank you for contacting me. A number of other feminists fighting for their very lives received identical messages from you. You may not even be aware that a letter was sent by your staff on your behalf (if this is the case, I understand). If you did, intentionally, send to me a form letter, please understand that many, if not most, will simply delete the message without a reply.
In either case, any time you desire, you are welcome to respond to my messages.
You are correct that since the videos of Planned Parenthood’s ALLEGED involvement in the selling of fetal tissue (not “unborn baby parts” as you incorrectly state in your propaganda), a witch hunt (not a proper investigation, which is the attorney general’s purview) in the Missouri House and Senate has taken place. Very little has been accomplished, because Planned Parenthood officials did not testify due to the frivolity of the fabricated nonevidence, and state employees rightly would not answer questions. Also, such “investigations” by other states’ legislatures have been fruitless as well.
The report released by MO Attorney General Chris Koster found that no wrongdoing has occurred.
Yes, I tire of my tax dollars being wasted on this non-issue when the money could be invested into tackling issues that will foster better lives for more Missourians, like more affordable healthcare. President Obama has done an amazing thing for the people of this nation through the Affordable Care Act; the Missouri legislature should now close the coverage gap by expanding Medicaid. Yes, your silly committees invited representatives from Planned Parenthood to testify. Since they have nothing to hide and have been fully vindicated by the attorney general, it would be foolish to waste time and money to show up at a sham hearing only intended to distract from the very important business of providing healthcare.
This behavior is of concern to us all. This is truly a waste of our money. For a state legislature entrusted with the responsibility to act with the well-being of the citizenry of Missouri in mind (check the state motto) to put on such a circus should not be tolerated.
One point your letter purports to address is a key issue in the current debate: that of women’s health. I am concerned about the health of women, too. You listed a few of the myths about risks of an abortion:

- abdominal pain: incomparable to that associated with pregnancy and childbirth
- nausea: incomparable to that associated with attending one of your hearings
- vomiting , diarrhea: if these occur, there are meds to treat them, and they resolve much quicker than raising a human for eighteen years in one of the most hateful, backward states in the country
- spotting (bleeding): again, incomparable to that experienced in childbirth
- infection, uterine scarring, perforation, organ damage: rare, (though common in the back alley abortions to which you would relegate women)
- depression: more common in women forced to bear children against their will, and exceedingly common in those children
- death: abortion is no more dangerous than a dental procedure, and is safest the earlier in a pregnancy it can be done, which makes your party’s obstruction of access particularly egregious.
Check your facts.

Abortion providers are heroes. Planned Parenthood’s amazing founder, Margaret Sanger, made the liberty of women and the hope of every child being a cherished child a possibility. The only thing standing in the way of that becoming reality is the misogyny of people like you.

Planned Parenthood recently decided to no longer seek re-imbursement for donating fetal tissue (not “baby parts” as you histrionically stated) to researchers for development of life-saving therapies and vaccines (as you neglected to mention, though I presume you handily take advantage of them) because they want to get back to devoting their full attention to the provision of healthcare. And since Planned Parenthood in Missouri does not participate in the fetal tissue donation program, your concern appears to be a red herring.
I am way ahead of you with your novel idea that I contact my district representative and begin a conversation about this important topic, but thank you for your encouragement. I have absolutely settled in my mind that all lives should matter enough to be wanted, planned and prepared for, and have the greatest potential for success and happiness, and zero chance of ending up in foster care or prison or poverty, or pregnant against their will.

I like this from the article:

While socialists on the left celebrate democracy, Caldwell said, the word has a different meaning on the right — in this instance, he said, excluding people who are not part of the nation, hence rejecting Jews and communists and, in pre-World War II Germany, democracy itself.

with just a few changes:

Considering that they can’t even figure out who Boehner’s replacement should be as Speaker - and that’s only among 247 Reps, the GOP is showing that they are in real trouble as they let the extremists gain a foothold in the past 2 election cycles, and now face an insurgency that will mean even more gridlock within the GOP establishment.

Socialist does NOT mean tyrant just as capitalist does NOT mean democratic. We’ve lied ourselves abotu this long enough and I appreciate Sanders doing what he’s doing. Some smug right wing asshole actually claimed that Sanders’ supporters like the label only because the right calls Obama a socialist and they’re embracing only because if the right hates it, it must be good. The point is that human sexuality is not binary. There are as many categories as there are individuals.

And asexuality is fine as long it is not the result of a society or upbringing that has taught you to be afraid of or disgusted by sex. Some people are just not that into it.

I have to confess sometimes I feel slightly asexual. It’s more common in the spectrum community though there are of course some people who aren’t on the spectrum who are. And yeah, that strikes me as the point too that sexuality isn’t as simple as homosexual and heterosexual.

Today’s Trivia,

Religions are all founded on miracles — on things we cannot understand, such as the Trinity. Jesus calls himself the Son of God, and yet is descended from David. I prefer the religion of Mahomet — it is less ridiculous than ours.

I do not see in religion the mystery of the incarnation so much as the mystery of the social order. It introduces into the thought of heaven an idea of equalization, which saves the rich from being massacred by the poor.
Often paraphrased as “Religion keeps the poor from killing the rich.”

who said these things?

re: #304 HappyWarrior

The media have to make something of the race for Democrats since Clinton holds the advantages in most polling. They need something to keep their attention going, so they’re hoping for a stalking horse like Biden to enter the race.

Media outlets need a narrative to work with - and it’s failing on both sides of the aisle. The GOP has far too many candidates running, diluting the field and establishment candidates are withering on the vine while the Democrats have a clear leader at this point. So, the media tries to manufacture news by running endless rumors or positing candidates as surging when that simply isn’t the case.

The story for the GOP at this point should be so many candidates are on the verge of dropping out for lack of funds/support. But that would mean ceding things to Trump, which is not where the GOP establishment wants to go.

For Democrats, it needs to be about getting the ground game going and working local candidates to retake seats across all levels of government. That’s what has to happen in 2015 and 2016 - taking back seats and rebuilding the Democratic caucus, especially with an eye to retaking the House - which would also mean eliminating some of the dysfunction resulting from the extremists in the GOP holding everyone else hostage to their insanity.

New post up at Stonekettle

Conservatives used to believe community was something other than an armed camp surrounded by enemies.

Conservatives used to believe in reform not revolution - and in fact it was the liberals who were the bomb throwers, the revolutionaries, the reactionaries, the ones who raged against The Machine and raised their fists in protest of The Man, the starry-eye pot-smoking dreamers who were always lost in some unwashed fantasy.

Now?

Intellectual humility? Humility isn’t a trait I’d associate with modern conservatism, intellectual or otherwise.

Maybe especially the intellectual part.

A respect for hierarchy? Precedence? Balance? Order? Have you met the Tea Party? The ones waving their assault rifles overhead and praying to their small angry god for bloody revolution? The ones who see shutting down the government as some kind of victory for freedom and liberty? Who would gleefully burn the institution of government to the ground and sullenly squat in the ruins clutching their bibles and guns? Prudent, measured, responsible, those are the very last things I’d call the raging bloody caterwauling coming from what passes for conservatives today.

This is a party whose best candidate for President is a bombastic self-aggrandizing Reality-TV host whose primary claim to fame is a bunch of shady New York real estate deals and who thinks running the country is like managing an Atlantic City casino.

Think about that.

Really think about it.

Good points. The ground game is what really helped Obama in 2008 and 2012.

I couldn’t go see the movies (Sean Connery era) when I was a kid, because my parents wouldn’t take me. But they let me buy the novels. I’m sure if they had read them, those would have been off limits, too. I read them all at least once each.

I saw the movies when I was older, and was rather disappointed that the movies were mostly not at all like the books. Goldfinger was close, but the post-Connery movies were way off course.

In our local library system you can check out a Go-Pro, a Garmin or one of several little robots to play with. Or you can book time on their 3D printer, or in their ‘studio’ with music and recording equipment. (Yeah, I live in a fairly well-funded suburb…)

I do, however, have issues with their remodels that include less space to display BOOKS, though they swear they haven’t reduced the collection size.

I mentioned that i had just renewed my library card and how happy that my little library was entering the 20th century. My local (small town) library is starting remodeling, the whole basement is going to be redone. I don’t think it will be as extensive as you mention above, but I hear at least half a dozen more PC’s and a couple more printers. Also some audio/visual equipment that was bought with a large donation from a patron that had passed away last year.

This type of investment is huge for the kids and adults that don’t have the resources to get PC’s and such with their own resources. The librarian I was talking to also said that they will help people with creating resumes and filling out online applications, another huge help.

Saw the trailer. It left me wanting less. Here are my final and unarguable thoughts on all things Star Wars, having watched roughly two and a half of them:

There are enough stupid car-chase movies set on Earth. They are not greatly improved by setting them in space.

Characters are interesting, caricatures less so. The principals in SW make Archie and Veronica look like Anna Karenina and Count Vronsky.

As for premieres, I have stood on an around the block line for exactly one of them, the NYC opening of The Godfather. That was worth it.

Grunberg is confirmed in.

I still think that the Star Trek reboot is a mediocre ST film but a pretty good SW film; I think Abrams will do a great job and surprise the skeptics. I do like the strong female characters and the casting of mostly-unknown actors (aside from the returning characters, of course).

And what does it say about him taking all this time to decide? Does he really want this, or is he doing it out of some desire to please others.

Aww, a lot of STL Rams fans seem to think that throwing public money to build a stadium will make money for the state, city, and locality. I had posted to Alderman French that public money shouldn’t go to any stadium financing at all - after all it’s a subsidy to a billionaire who doesn’t need it. And there’s all the issues with the fact that the NFL schedules a grand total of 8 regular season games at home each year. That leaves a facility with 350+ days being empty and the need to fill it with gigs.

STL already has an existing stadium suitable for the purpose. The owner wants a new stadium and threatens a move. So, I’ve got a bunch of ppl tweeting that the subsidies make sense, that the money should be spent, and that there aren’t better uses of the money.

[facepalm]

Public subsidies of sports stadiums is a huge waste of taxpayer funds. Heck, there are stadiums that no longer in use where taxpayers are still on the hook, including the Astrodome, the Kingdome, and Giants Stadium among others. Giants Stadium debt is still being repaid, even though it was torn down. Ditto for the Kingdome (which finally retired its debt 15 years after the stadium was imploded!).

Economists keep finding that the money for sports stadiums takes away from other more valuable projects, and that the economic impact is minimal (as we saw with the Super Bowl in NJ, there was no measurable economic bump - and the costs were significant, including higher NJ Transit costs, security costs, and the NFL demanded and got sales tax breaks).

“…The smoking gun is a schedule of loan payments appropriated from Event Day tax revenue between 2021 and 2051 that show the city’s burden rising from $4.785 million to a ridiculous $9.975 million by 2051. Those payments are compounded with the base rental payments included in another schedule, which by 2023 will rise from $5 million annually to $6 million, again until 2051. All told, by 2051 St. Louis will be paying $15.975 million annually for the proposed stadium—which is a lot of money for any city, let alone one already struggling to get by.”

Acute kidney injury by cantharidin poisoning following a silly bet on an ugly beetle

“Cantharidin is a poisonous substance secreted by blister beetles, including the ‘Spanish fly’. Historically, cantharidin was used as an aphrodisiac, vesicant and abortifacient. Symptoms of poisoning include gastrointestinal and genitourinary mucosal irritation along with renal dysfunction. We present the case of a reckless 23-year-old soldier who accepted the challenge of eating a beetle (Berberomeloe majalis). Six hours later he was admitted to the emergency room with abdominal pain, dysuria, gross haematuria with clots, hypotension, fever and renal insufficiency. With intravenous fluid therapy, he recovered clinically. Laboratory parameters returned to normal within 1 week.”

Jones may have been armed, but there’s no way to know what he was thinking given that the cop was out of uniform and driving an unmarked car. There’s no evidence Jones knew he was addressing a cop.

The Palm Beach Gardens police officer who shot Corey Jones Sunday has been identified as Nouman Raja.

Raja was on duty in an unmarked police vehicle early Sunday morning when he came across Corey Jones and his disabled car on the Interstate 95 southbound exit ramp at PGA Boulevard.

Raja, who was in plain clothes, believed Jones’ vehicle was abandoned and stopped to investigate it, according to a statement released by police Monday afternoon. As Raja exited his vehicle, “he was suddenly confronted by an armed subject,” the statement says.

“As a result of the confrontation,” Raja fatally shot Jones.

The Texas attorney general’s office has filed 24 lawsuits against the federal government since Obama took office — litigation that has cost the state $2.58 million and more than 14,113 hours spent by staff and state lawyers working those cases.

Many of those have resulted in defeats, including the recent high-profile lawsuits defending Texas’ strict law requiring voters to show picture ID at the polls and the new state-approved voting districts that a federal appeals court ruled were discriminatory toward minorities. Those two cases alone cost more than $2 million, according to records obtained by The Associated Press using the Freedom of Information Act.

Now Crist, 59, is hinging his latest bid on a House of Representatives district expected to become favorable for a Democrat based in his hometown of St. Petersburg, located in the Tampa Bay region on Florida’s Gulf coast.

At a news conference, he said representing the region was important to him, and he remained passionate about politics.

“Public service is in my heart. I can’t help it. I guess that’s fairly obvious,” he told reporters gathered at a community park, where he announced his run.

re: #337 Eventual Carrion

Yes, I saw your comment and was thinking of that too when I typed this. (Was way behind on that thread, so didn’t reply then.) Good on your library! Having PCs and printers is vital for people who don’t have home access to the internet. My sister is a children’s librarian in the Boston Public system — she says that a large part of the service she’s able to provide is helping kids with online research for schoolwork; and helping adults with resumes and online applications for jobs and for the many govt & private services that are getting harder and harder to access if you don’t have an internet connection AND the computer skills to use it.
We need more libraries and more librarians! Good wishes for your system in catching up to the 20th, and in reaching for the 21st century.

And the fact that most of the consumers are white is taken to mean the lead shouldn’t be a black man. By that “logic” the state of South Carolina should boycotted because most of its voters are white, but half of its 4 most important statewide offices are held by people who aren’t white.

Because he gave the president a hug…….but enough of pesky facts about how your party’s primary voters think any treatment of President Obama that doesn’t regard him as Satan in Chief ruins one’s aspirations.

Our local library signed up for an online network which allows Kindle users to log on using their library card number as a login, and borrow e-books through Amazon (natch).

Since I discovered the library network I’ve borrowed well over 50 books without having to drive to the library to do so. Pretty cool.

Definitely worth saving the time and effort of an almost 40 mile roundtrip. And don’t have to worry about getting them returned for the due date.

re: #373 danarchy

Why is it that in all of these democratic countries the only people we can seem to elect are relatives of people we have elected in the past? Seriously 10’s of millions of people in the country and you have to elect the son of one of the previous guys? Why do we keep setting up political dynasties when we have the opportunity to elect anyone we want. Local, state and national it seems.

Because running a country takes skills. Not just anyone can come off the street and run a city/state/country (see Texas).

As a dad, I’ve passed a lot of stuff I know down to my kids. Not only some of my programming skills, but I talk about math, science, history, and any other subject that sounds interesting. I’ve also talked about my worldview. Most parents do the latter, and a lot of active parents (like politicians) would share their knowledge and skills with their kids as well.

Combine these two and you end up with a good portion of the kids who go into politics having parents that did. And if the parent was any good, the kid should have picked up a few things.

Children of politicians becoming politicians isn’t a bad thing if the children made it on their own.

And anyway, defining a dynasty by last names is not very useful. FDR was related to 11 former presidents, only one of which shared his last name.

I laugh at those racist morons boycotting the movie. As if anyone at Star Wars or elsewhere even remotely cares if some whiny racists boycott it. Its not going to affect the box office takings at all.

Do these people not realize that major studio films make *far* more money overseas than they do in the US?

I suppose when you’re still living in 1953, details like that might escape one’s notice.
