Far Right Takes Charge of the GOP: Trump and Carson Now Lead the Field, Jeb Bush Support Plummets

The far right ascendant
Politics • Views: 56,058

The political news today for Jeb Bush is not good; the latest poll from Florida shows him with support in the single digits. In Florida. Ouch.

But Ben Carson and Donald Trump, arguably the two most extreme Republicans in the race, have reason to party: both of them are now over 20% in the latest CNN poll, as the rest of the field falters.

By now you probably know my take on this; demagogues like Trump and Carson have floated to the top because the voting base of the GOP has been so degraded and radicalized by years of crazy talk. There’s now an almost complete lack of ideological diversity in the GOP. The disturbing far right mindset epitomized by groups like the John Birch Society and the Tea Party and popularized by right wing blogs and media is in total control of the Republican Party, and establishment Republicans like Jeb Bush can only watch impotently in horror.

establishment Republicans like Jeb Bush can only watch impotently in horror.

And the horror, in Jeb’s case, is not over what these radicals might do to the country, but the peevishness of someone who assumed they were anointed for leadership and see it slipping away.

Overall, Trump’s 27% leads the field, followed by Carson at 22%, both head and shoulders above their nearest competition. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio are tied for third place with 8% support each, followed by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul each at 5%. Fiorina, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz each have 4% support, while Ohio Gov. John Kasich is at 3%. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum stands at 2% and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham holds 1%.

Was Romney ever this far behind any of the other GOP contenders in 2012?

Biden is losing my respect.

“I don’t consider Republicans enemies,” Biden said. “They’re friends.”

As if Hillary said this out of the blue and for no reason at all. She was asked the question and said, after several other groups, Republicans. Considering their disdain for her and their relentless hunt to “get” her, what she said isn’t shocking.

If he runs now, I will be really disappointed in him.

According to RCP, the answer depends on how you look at it. Romney never dropped into single digits in a smaller field. At several points he was behind another candidate.

For instance, he got a maximum of 11 points behind Perry in September 2011. Then he fell about 13 points behind Gingrich, but ultimately prevailed. Romney never fell below 15 points.

Again, that’s with a far smaller field than the current cage match.

I understand where you’re coming from but this is Biden’s nature. He had nice words to say about Jesse Helms in his Yale commencement speech. That said, Biden has never faced the outright attacks on his character that Clinton and Obama have from the Republicans and that would certainly change if he were to become the frontrunner or nominee.

I never heard that but that just strikes me as yeah Joe’s nature. I think he’s honestly someone who tries like hell to separate the politics from the individual. He hated Helms the man when he first got in but Ted Kennedy of all people pointed out that Helms took in a disabled orphan. It’s not how I would do politics but this is Joe’s personality. He has a problem with Republican policies not merely individuals which I can relate to honestly having GOP neighbors.

But remember - as he showed in the VP debates against both Palin and Ryan, he’s perfectly capable of going after them and knocking them down a few pegs while maintaining his ‘good guy’ image.

I don’t think he’d have much of a problem with TPGOP oppo, with the very clear exception of them going after his family, which I have no doubt they’d stoop to if necessary.

No doubt about it. He’ll go after their policies and I think that’s the key word here as hard as anyone can if not harder but I’ve never seen him really attack them individually. He never attacked Palin for being a bigot but for having views out of touch. Never Ryan for being an Ayn Rand fan boy and guy who lied about his marathon times but as a man with dangerous policies. As I said, it’s not how I would do it. And yeah if Joe gets it, he easily has my vote as does Hill and Bern. I actually like Joe the most of any potential or current candidate.

Chucky, Star Trek expert, opines about George Lucas.

Showing his cluelessness about both. Lucas wrote SW. Roddenberry was behind ST. That’s worse than crossing the streams. Any nerd would know the difference between the two.

Hate to break it to Chucky, but many in the original SW were from the UK - since it was filmed in the UK. Extras were often from the UK. Cushing, Prowse, Daniels, Guiness, and Mayhew were all from the UK. So too is Ian McDiarmid.

So, while the story originated in George Lucas’ mind, it was populated with actors/characters from all over. And Lucas took cues from everywhere - Kurosawa for some stuff, Eastern religions for others, etc. Hardly American ideas - but he translated and reconfigured all of it into its own unique movie world (which occurs in a galaxy far far away).

Star Wars & other space drama is human-centric. If other life forms exist on other planets the probability is that they will not resemble humans, but that’s not something that we can identify with. So they have to replicate the diversity of humans on earth.

When Star Wars introduced non-human characters (other than the droids which are mechanical) they were either cuddly pets or ZOMGKILLITWITHFIRE Jar Jar.

Seems that the main weapon against Trudeau is his China quote.

The thing is, Trudeau predicted in the same speech that this will be quoted out of context.

“There’s a level of admiration I actually have for China because their basic dictatorship is allowing them to actually turn their economy around on a dime. I mean there is a flexibility that I know Stephen Harper must dream about, of having a dictatorship that he can do everything he wanted, that I find quite interesting.
But if I were to reach out and say which kind of administration I most admire, I think there’s something to be said right here in Canada for the way our territories are run.
Nunavut, Northwest Territories, and the Yukon are done without political parties around consensus. And are much more like a municipal government. And I think there’s a lot to be said for people pulling together to try and solve issues rather than to score points off of each other.
But Sun News can now report that I prefer China.

I don’t think the character was terrible, he was just focused on WAY too much during Episode 1. Cut the role back and you’d have a much stronger movie.

104
Targetpractice  Oct 20, 2015 • 11:13:32am

Lucas’ issue was that he didn’t have anybody after the original trilogy to say “No” to him. He surrounded himself with sycophants who told him what he wanted to hear, namely that his ideas were the greatest thing ever, and that resulted in the horrors of the prequel films. Same thing happened with Roddenberry after the success of the original series, but thankfully the studio execs keyed in after The Motion Picture that they had to put some sort of filter between Gene and the sausage-making, else they were never going to have a successful movie franchise.

105
Barefoot Grin  Oct 20, 2015 • 11:14:15am

I think most people know about Lucas’s great admiration for Kurosawa. I think that in part informs the samurai-swashbuckling aspects of the first SW, and it also likely informs the Asian inflections (by Asia I really mean east Asia).

Right he was but I am talking about strictly legendary. Babe Ruth is a legend for baseball in the way Michael Jordan is for basketball. He transcends the sport. And yeah Cobb was a huge dick but interestingly does not appear to have been a KKK member. There are two hall of famers who are known to have been- Tris Speaker and Rodgers Hornsby and Cobb even had nice words to say about Willie Mays but this was much later obviously. Wagner from what I have heard was actually quite progressive minded on race for his time. There was a Negro League player named John Henry Lloyd who the white papers called the “Black Wagner”, Honus told them that they should be comparing him to Lloyd and not the other way around.

Putting modern variations of animals in the creation scene: Zebras, Clydesdales, and donkeys are all part of the horse kind and came to look like they do today since the Flood as part of the one horse kind. Species and the biblical kind are not necessarily the same things. The original horse kind likely had features resembling each of these. They diversified into what we have today through natural selection in the wild and artificial selection for man’s benefit. The same is true with the cat kind. Domestic cats, lions, bobcats, tigers, and so on, are all varieties in the one cat kind that have developed through variation since the Flood. It is better to draw generic representatives of each kind, such as the cats, horses, parrots, deer, and elephants (which includes mammoths and mastodons, Asian, African, and so on).

A few years back, I stayed in a NY hamlet known as Fleischmanns. The town’s claim to fame was that after the turn of the century, baseball players used to come there regularly to practice/play before the season. Honus Wagner was the most famous of those players. I stayed in a vacation home across from where he played.

Fleischmanns Park, which dominated the north side of Wagner Avenue, was a gift to the village in May 1914 from Julius Fleischmann, son of Charles. Among the many interests of the Fleischmann family was major league baseball. The park, formerly known as the Mountain Athletic Club, was where their players came to get in shape before the start of the regular season. One player in particular stood out—Honus Wagner. Wagner was known to his fans as the Flying Dutchman and was admitted to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936. Stipulations of Julius’ gift were and still remain: that it always be used as a park and athletic grounds, that it always be kept in good condition, that it never be sold or sublet and always be of free access to the public. However, in 1934 the village obtained from the heirs a release from the word “free” so that for certain events a fee could be charged.

Added footnote - there’s a synagogue in town that was established in 1918 adjacent to the ballfield.

re: #116 Timothy Watson

The destruction of Alderaan is often cited as ipso facto proof of the Empire’s “evilness” because it seems like mass murder—planeticide, even. As Tarkin prepares to fire the Death Star, Princess Leia implores him to spare the planet, saying, “Alderaan is peaceful. We have no weapons.” Her plea is important, if true.

But the audience has no reason to believe that Leia is telling the truth. In Episode IV, every bit of information she gives the Empire is willfully untrue. In the opening, she tells Darth Vader that she is on a diplomatic mission of mercy, when in fact she is on a spy mission, trying to deliver schematics of the Death Star to the Rebel Alliance. When asked where the Alliance is headquartered, she lies again.

Leia’s lies are perfectly defensible—she thinks she’s serving the greater good—but they make her wholly unreliable on the question of whether or not Alderaan really is peaceful and defenseless. If anything, since Leia is a high-ranking member of the rebellion and the princess of Alderaan, it would be reasonable to suspect that Alderaan is a front for Rebel activity or at least home to many more spies and insurgents like Leia.

Cool stuff. No real historical baseball around here but lots of it in Pittsburgh where my dad’s folks are from. Nana even grew up near what became Three Rivers Stadium and it was her Dad that knew Wagner apparently. Really, I think Wagner might be one of the most underrated players ever. The fact that the Empire would feel the need to build a planet killer in the first place to keep the star systems in line is ipso facto proof that they were evil. This wasn’t some regime that was merciful and magnanimous, let alone willing to tolerate dissenting opinions. They sought to eliminate it - planet by planet.

Even if you assume that Alderaan held a rebel base with 10s of millions of rebel troops, ships, etc., there were billions of people on the planet, and that was indeed genocide.

And the Empire realized the need to go and build additional Death Stars after the first, because the need to keep the systems in line was so great. That’s not exactly a good sign that the Empire was good.

Well, of course Kristol supports torture and the extermination of an entire people because one or two of them might be guilty of some crime.

And Tarkin never disputes Leia’s point and specifically asks for a military target:

Leia: No! Alderaan is peaceful. We have no weapons. You can’t possibly—

Tarkin: You would prefer another target? A military target? Then name the system.

[…]

Tarkin: Dantooine is too remote to make an effective demonstration, but don’t worry, we will deal with your rebel friends soon enough.

Tarkin didn’t care as much as about killing rebels as making an “effective demonstration”.

Let’s hope one of our other pitchers is good enough, I hope you win guys, but I won’t be there. (had a special clause in his contract, that the team couldn’t argue with him about it).

Good thing the Dodgers had Drysdale. :). I brought up Greenberg though since he played his career in Detroit though. Lots of great Jewish players over the years though.

So was Watto (Semitic-sounding junk dealer) and the guys in charge of the Trade Federation (Asian-sounding merchants trying to take over a planet).

This is why I avoid watching movies with some progressives I really like as well as a certain type of conservative.

Too damned much digging for something to be offended by. If you look hard enough for something, you will absolutely find it.
(example…last week at Lawyers, Guns & Money a debate was held on whether the lead character Mark in The Martian and his dismay at having nothing but disco to listen to for two years was a covert slam on GLBT musicians from the 70’s. Yes, they really thought The Martian is a patriarchal attack on the gay community and gay friendly music)

If you want to read into a vocalization well then have at it…but there are only so many ways to speak in English. (or else you can just invent new languages for all the races and have a lot of translation at the bottom of the screen, which can be unwieldy and risks becoming a distraction)

I try not to read too much into casting, accidents, etc., but some of the prequel stuff seemed to really appeal to certain American stereotypes.

(typo fixed, forgot “not”)

I haven’t cared much about baseball since Rollie Fingers took the mound with his boss mustache.

Well, how bout when Randy Johnson killed a bird?

Just saw that the MLB is making a Babe Ruth miniseries. Even if you don’t like baseball. Ruth was probably the first American sports icon.
