BWS mentioned Maureen O’Hara’s passing. I am not a John Wayne fan at all. His acting never did much for me and his politics were awful but I have a sentimental weakness for The Quiet Man since I have roots in County Mayo whre the film was set and furthermore the Wayne character (Sean) was a Pittsburgh boxer. I also watched the film while I studied in Ireland in teh summer of 29009. I have yet to go to Mayo but I plan to now knowing my roots there.

She worked for the Reagan White House. Ronnie was fond of patronizing Democrats and liberals and acting like one had to be a moron to be a liberal in the first place not ot mention his racist pandering. Really, I don’t want ot hear it from Noonan about politeness. I’ll never be a dick to someone just because they’re a Republican but if you say something sexist, homophobic, or racist, don’t cry about me being rude or impolite if I tell you exactly what it is.

I think yeah that and obviously I can’t speak for LGBT lizards but I think it implies some kind of ousiderdom. I had a gay roommate. He went to class, he studied, he drank (probably?), etc. I understand EC didn’t mean harm but the phrase “homosexual lifestyle” really rubs me the wrong way. My gay friends and classmates and family members are just like me, they’re just attracted to different people. I don’t tell my straight friends that prefer blonde women that they live a blonde lifestyle.

My test is: replace any reference to homosexuality with skin color.

If you would still consider someone as holding bigoted beliefs despite how they treat the people they interact with if the phrasing gives you that feeling when using the test, it’s still bigoted.

I think you’ll find there’s really no phrasing that works.

If someone doesn’t agree with the gay lifestyle, but they treat every gay person they meet with dignity and respect does that still make them a bigot?

Would that someone be dignified and respectful to the person if they didn’t agree with their lifestyle? Is there still a judgement being made and is that judgement those people they don’t agree with are somehow wrong or lesser.

I know a lot of people back when I was a kid that could turn the sugar on when they were speaking to a black person, but later those same people could be the biggest bigots around when out of sight/earshot of the same black person. Out in public they could just be the nicest people. Even some of the black folks thought so.

I base my observations having grown up in a mixed neighborhood in the early 60s.

Someone being gay makes them feel icky (or it frightens them because it stirs up some latent things they’re unwilling to acknowledge). Period. If a person can be kind, generous, compassionate and respectful of gay people, in spite of prejudice and/or religious beliefs, that’s awesome. It doesn’t erase the prejudice, but it’s a step in the right direction. However, if it comes with condescension, or this “hate the sin, love the sinner” or “I’ll pray for you” horseshit, then yes, you’re a bigoted asshat who looks down their nose at someone you consider beneath you. True compassion and respect for others doesn’t have that baggage attached.

No…I think they are still a bigot. Busybody is just a cover.

From Merrian Webster online

bigot
noun big*ot ˈbi-gət

: a person who strongly and unfairly dislikes other people, ideas, etc. : a bigoted person; especially : a person who hates or refuses to accept the members of a particular group (such as a racial or religious group)

Maybe we are not treating the word bigot in its proper use and are making the bar to be called a bigot a lot higher than it really is.

I’d put it this way. If one feels “icky” about the whole gay thing but, for example, as a test, wouldn’t treat them differently as an employer - sincerely so, not because of the laws, as a friend, as a parent, as a legislator - then I wouldn’t describe them as a bigot. It’s a person with cultural baggage.

There really are some fairly big downsides to being a red head. A lot of them are the way you can be treated, especially for some males. When people expect you to be a personality type based on your hair color and you are not, it can be very emotionally hurtful. Again…my experience with two brothers.

I think they see being gay on the same level as being an alcoholic or being a drug addict, i.e. someone with a problem who needs help.

Which definitely is condescending. Definitely not I think in the same as “I’ll refuse to treat you like an equal in society because you’re gay” but I think to use my own experience as someone on the autistic spectrum, the overtly patronizing attitudes I get or the expectations I’m some kind of mad genius. The latter though goes more to the assumption that gay mae= must be effeminate and he just needs to play sports.

re: #76 ObserverArt

I know you were joking. So was I!

There really are some fairly big downsides to being a red head. A lot of them are they way you can be treated, especially for some males. When people expect you to be personality type based on your hair color and you are not, it can be very emotionally hurtful. Again…my experience with two brothers.

Out of 30-some cousins, one has red hair. When we were kids, I saw him use humor as a survival tactic, making funny remarks about and straight to adults who were less than polite to him. I thought he’d end up as a professional comedian, but he seems to be happy with his photography studio.

They see being Jewish that way too. Or Atheist, or Muslim, or Hindu or Buddhist. That’s why they knock on my door and try to talk to me about it, that’s why they stand on street corners or in the middle of the subway shouting about the superiority of their way of life and that all of us should emulate them. Again, I say fuck ‘em. That’s why Charles Krauthammer had the nerve to tell the Fox audience that Tiger Woods’ cheating issues was all because he didn’t have Jesus in his life.

re: #75 Eclectic Cyborg

I think that may be it for some people, but for others it’s on par with child molesters and rapists, even drug addicts, people they feel need to be eliminated, by whatever means necessary from society. They have this ideal society which is very 1950s white American TV show and any deviation from that is an abomination. Look at the hate and fear evangelical wingnuts have exported to parts of Africa, where anyone in the LGBT community is basically on a hit list. A seething hatred that requires revenge. In some parts of Africa, gang rape is the prescribed punishment for lesbians. That’s hate, nothing else. Back here at home they can’t really get away with that, to that degree, so it manifests in other ways. I think there are some people who want to understand, but it’s very far removed from their experiences and perhaps they are bigoted without the hate, but more of basic ignorance, which is based in fear. Because our culture has been immature and stupid about this since forever.

As a redheaded kid, whenever I would complain about it, my parents (blonde dad, very dark brunette mom) would immediately bring up the stunning Maureen O’Hara to show me how lucky I was to look like her. RIP Ms O’Hara.

When I hated my saddle shoes that fit me better than my other shoes, my mom showed me a newspaper photo of Caroline Kennedy wearing them on her schoolhouse steps. I remained unimpressed.

85
HappyWarrior  Oct 24, 2015 • 11:26:27am

We have some redheads in my family too. I think they’re more from other influences but I don’t know. My joke about ginger aside, my mom tells me sometimes she can see auburn in my hair and she noticed it in my niece too. I do sometimes joke when I do something ditzy that it’s a former blonde moment- I was more dirty blonde as a kid and now I’m by far teh most dark haired of the immediate family which is definitely my mom’s side since I think most of them were eitehr dark brown hair or light brown haired. HArd to say without many or in some cases no photos of people from the older generations.

Red-heads were historically persecuted, and it’s not a joke. In some crazier conspiracy theories (e.g. by Klimov) they are lumped together with Jews and gays.

And all of that was probably a protection mechanism and giving them all a bit of what they expected out of a redhead.

I bet you he can speak to exactly the same feeling my brothers got…one especially. He was the bright orange redhead, small of stature. very light-skinned and freckled. He is nothing like “Dennis the Menace,” but that is how he was treated. He was the trouble-maker, goof off and starter of all misdeeds…even if he wasn’t.

“Each man disparageth his fellow-creature,” says Walker, “and gratifies his haughty humour in the derision of his brother. And this is often done upon such trivial grounds, that a due perpension would cause an abashment in the face of the practiser. My present instance shall be in a common yet causeless calumniation: viz. the vilifying of red-hair’d men, the putting of disesteem upon persons, merely because of the native colour of the excrement of the head.”

On reading further, I was intrigued to learn that throughout history redheads have often been singled out for persecution. During the height of the witch trials in Europe, for example, red hair was considered evidence of witchcraft. Judas Iscariot was often depicted with red hair in Renaissance art and the Spanish Inquisition even suspected that redheads had been marked by the fires of Hell itself!

It’s not at all the same. A gay person doesn’t ‘need help’ to cure their ‘condition’. It’s who they are and IT IS OK. We don’t need to go through conversion therapy in order to make us more acceptable. Rick Perry made this argument when he ran for president and he was derided widely.

Along with being gay, I’m 31 years into sobriety (I drank a lifetime supply before then) and I really resent the comparison of the two. They do not compare.

The Kid had a great first day on the job. His new schedule for the week is around 25 hours with the possibility of more with one on call day (for four hours, if someone calls in sick they’ll call him). So glad for this kid, he has earned a break. I just hope no one bullies him or gives him shit and ruins the experience. I told him if after 6 months there was no raise in pay or increase in hours, he needs to look elsewhere. He also has a choice to join a union here, so I’m going to look into that, there’s lots of perks like discounts on cell phone plans and other things.

Now if we weren’t about to go under financially I could exhale. Sigh. And with that, I gotta go be productive in some form. BBL.

3 Dead, 22 Injured at Oklahoma State Homecoming in Stillwater After Car Plows Into Crowd

A woman police said was driving drunk crashed into the Oklahoma State Homecoming parade Saturday morning, killing three bystanders, critically injuring eight more and leaving more than a dozen others with lesser injuries.

The driver, Adacia Chambers, 25, was arrested and jailed on suspicion of driving under the influence, Stillwater Police Capt. Kyle Gibbs said. Police didn’t immediately release any details about the three killed in the crash, which happened around 10:30 a.m. ET. University officials said the homecoming game would still be played.

Myself, I love long hair on women. But for me, “long” is anything longer than shoulders. You’ve got a lot to work with if you want to trim.

That’s how women’s magazines tend to define long too, these days.

I tend to dislike anything much shorter than the end of my shoulder blades. Maybe that will change in the future, but… I also like long hair on mr. klys (in his case, slightly longer than shoulder length, although it curls) and we have a deal that if I cut mine short he can too and I really don’t want that.

If I do trim it, probably 7” or so is the max.

I have a fantastically androgynous photo of me in fifth grade, with my hair as a bowl cut around my ears. I got mistaken for a boy that summer.

While wearing a swimsuit.

That’s the point where I started growing it out. The shortest it’s been since then is shoulder length.

My hair is almost perfectly straight and does not grow terribly quickly. Mrs. Fish’s hair is the tight, springy curls, so while it’s actually really long when she straightens it, it doesn’t look it most of the time when she lets it go natural.

Insane bigot meltdown at Free Republic over Oklahoma State crash:
Two Dead After Car Runs Into A Crowd At Oklahoma State’s Homecoming Parade

This is the very first response:

My first thought is sudden Jihad syndrome. OSU and KU have to play a game after all this. Stillwater is a close community and this kind of thing affects everyone.

Suspicious geography:

I graduated from OSU. I think the Muslim center is just north of HOF on Washington. Twitter reports say it’s a 20 something female.

Freeper X-purt is even more succinct:

Allah. (complete message)

This one was posted well after the arrested driver had been identified and her Facebook page posted:

This is a signature muslim jihad method.
There are a number of instances already here in the US.

There have been a number of these signature muslim attacks in Israel the last few weeks.

Friday prayers a few hours ago called for these attacks worldwide - that includes the US.

But you already know all this don’t you? (emphasis in post)

I love long hair. Always had it my entire life. I can’t style my hair worth a shit but give me a pencil (or a hair stick, of which I have many) and I can make the most amazing styles with a variety of cool shaped buns and sticks).

My hair was down past my waist. I have waaaaay too much hair (very fine but a ton of it). When it gets too long I get headaches. About 2 months ago I got a massive headache (I thought I had an aneurysm. I went to the doctor. I didn’t.) Anyway, that night, I bent over and took of 6”. The next day I went to a salon and had them take off another 6”. A couple of months ago, I had it cut up above my shoulders.

I will never do that again. I hate it. I can’t keep it off of my face and I cannot style it. I need to repeatedly remind myself I can barely wield a blow dryer let alone a curling iron (I have stick straight hair).

I am going to let it grow to just below my shoulder blades and thin it with a high-end thinning shears.

You can easily go to waist length and still have what is considered very long hair.

I thin it all the time. I hadn’t in some time.

I used to show dogs so I have a pair of very high quality, $75, extremely fine tooth thinning shears. I usually start thinning about 5” from my scalp so I don’t have individual hairs standing up. This time wasn’t the first headache I have gotten from my hair. It was definitely the worst.

No shit. I am so low maintenance (for a girly girl) it’s sick. I spend 10 minutes on makeup when I am going out for the evening; three minutes to put some blush on other times. I almost never wear mascara because I don’t like how it feels, ditto base. It is gross. (I am blessed with good skin and all that stuff so I don’t need much makeup.) Ah, I see. My mom made the mistake of letting a hairdresser thin my very thick, curly hair as a kid which she thinned near the root. In a very short time the look was… comical. I can’t even hear of the concept now without shuddering.

I think it’s different for curly hair. When I would get a perm, hairs would stick out all the time. With straight hair, unless it’s thinned way up high, it will just lay flat.

And if it is thinned way up high, hopefully it’s a lot so I then look like I have a halo! (sweet devilish smile)

Right, but what I’m saying is that if you do that, they’re still right next to each other - this time just up and down instead of left and right. By moving one to the other side of the karma number, you provide more separation and reduce the likelihood of hitting the one you don’t intend.

Germany is fascinating. Actual former Nazis, and actual former resistance, and the Easterners who feel different from other Germans because of History… The general public seems fine when it comes to refugees, and I like the stand that Merkel took for the refugees, but then she goes to Turkey to find a way for them to stem the flow. All of Europe needs to plan together for these crises. In whatever way they want to define ‘all of Europe’.

Per the hair discussion earlier, I am debating a trim.

It is down to my butt when it is fully loose, which is rare these days, because it gets in the way of everything.

On the other hand, I love having long hair, because it is different. And you can do fun things with it.

I could sit on mine when I got married (ummm, over 40 years ago), but it didn’t last long outside in river bottom heat and humidity. It grew to immense dimensions and snagged up insects, leaves and small mammals. It finally ended up being just a cap, and that has worked for me ever since. I was proud of it, but not when it looked (and felt) like a burning bush.
