“…tomorrow’s flyby will take Cassini within 30 miles of the surface, and straight through its mysterious geysers, which are fueled by a subsurface ocean that could potentially harbor life.

Speeding along at 19,000 mph, the probe will hurtle through the geyser’s plumes around 1 pm Eastern time, furiously capturing samples and images in an attempt to characterize the moon’s internal ocean.”

Uh no shit but neither can any Republican. Not even Bush in 2004 could and he actually wasn’t a dick to the Latino community which is more than you can say about any GOPer running and yep I’m even including the Latinos Cruz and Rubio who are running in that category too especially Teddy.

Yep and that would I think require the Democrats to be real mushy on the issue. They’ve done a lot to alienate the Latino community since 2004. Bush’s message on immigration and inclusion was strongly rejected and if they think Latinos don’t know how GOP rank and file perceive them then they’re clueless. FFS Obama beat Romney among Cuban-Americans. What they don’t get is even if the Latino voter is not an immigrant themselves, they probably do have someone in their family is and the famed Hispanic sense of family is genuine as opposed to what the Republicans call family values.

The GOP is in short a lily white old man’s party. Nothing wrong with lily white old men. I know one very well who I know as “Dad” though he thankfully isn’t part of said party. The GOP’s growth in the Obama years has been in parts o the country that are decreasing. Their brand is not attractive to young people, Latinos, Asians, and other growing parts of the country.

To be fair, getting “within 10 of 35%” means hitting 26%… he does a couple of ads where he speaks non-broken, non-accented Spanish, that would probably pick him up some votes. You also can’t forget the Crazification Factor of 27%. Rubio has the ability to come off as fairly compassionate when he wants to, last year (or maybe earlier this year) he was on with Jon Stewart and actually sounded fairly moderate. I’m not saying he’ll win half the Latino vote, or even 40%, but I could see him somewhere around 30%.

I think if he’s the nominee, the Dems need to point out how he’s flopped to appease the base and if he gets the nomination, he’s definitely going to move to the right on the issue.Romney did the stupid “self deport” quote and then acted like he was a moderate on the issue and never said it. Obama pretty much said “bull-shit Mitt” during one of the debates without saying it.

Kind of stoked about some code I just figured out. If you use the LGF Pages bookmarklet and select some text on a web page before clicking the bookmarklet, the text you selected is automatically copied in the Pages posting form.

But now, I’ve figured out how to actually copy the underlying HTML code of the selected text — it will also copy any formatting (bold, italics, etc.), links, lists, blockquotes, etc. and automatically place those into your post. This is a very cool feature, and I don’t think any other blogging system has it.

Not ready to roll it out yet - have to test with a lot of sites to make sure there are no unforeseen gotchas.

I’m hearing now that the girl assaulted by the cop in SC had just lost her mom and been placed in foster care and in turn this was a new school for her. So there’s that…I understand the cop was fired too. I just hope this kid finds some love and compassion, because it seems like a lot of people think she had this coming. I hate humans sometimes. I also hope no one doxxes her, but I doubt anyone will give a shit about her privacy either.

D&D story time:

Barbarian launched an all out attack into a dragon, doing massive damage, but its still coming at us.

My bard comes in with his long sword, swings 3 times, hits once for 2 points of damage, finally killing it.

The story: “Yes, I killed the dragon. The Barbarian helped a little.”

What pisses me off is that people in this day and age think that since they got hit when they were kids “and they turned out just fine” that it’s really OK for that cop to pick this girl up and throw her. THROW HER. Because she was noncompliant. Um, how many compliant teenagers are there really? The teacher who called in the cop is to blame here too. You know what you do when a kid does this? You tell them they get a fail for the day. And then you ignore the shit out of them and teach your fucking class because that is your job. You then explain how easy it is to use your phone to cheat on classwork or tests and that is your reason for the no phone in class policy. If she is still digging in her heels, then let it fucking go and fail her for the day/assignment/test/quiz or whatever.

I can assure you, had that been my kid, the school would have been hearing from my attorney that afternoon, and so would the police dept. This poor kid may or may not have a decent advocate in the foster system, but goddamnit, someone in that school had to have known her situation and knew she was grieving her whole world being shattered. Is it not being “reported” that Ryan is upset that Boehner is pushing this all through?

Why do I put reported in quotes? Because I am thinking the reports are just a smoke screen for Ryan. I think he knows full well what Boehner is doing…he’s giving him instant cover as Speaker of the House so that he won’t have to do a budget deal for a year or two with the hope that something changes with the Freedom Caucus/Tea Party types.

Maybe ask that of GWB and his Administration. There’s an entire war complete with casualties that ought to be examined based on statements made by that Administration.

If you think Hillary lied to the Committee, prove it. Problem is that the GOP can’t get proof. They just believe it, which in their addled minds makes it true.

So they go along concocting these notions that become entrenched in the narrative and picked up by lazy media types who don’t want to do any work more than necessary and recite it without critical analysis.

Ask all the Republicans running they seem very skilled at lying.

“What the signers meant, it seemed to me, was that when it comes to some theological matters Mr. Douthat has no idea what he’s talking about. And that’s true…” he said. “This does not mean [Douthat is] a bad person or a bad Catholic. Or a ‘heretic,’ to use a phrase from his lexicon. It just means that he’s not a professional theologian and on many matters, particularly church history and ecclesiology, he is out of his depth.”

“I wholeheartedly support fully anyone’s right to write whatever he or she wants, including Ross Douthat,” Martin wrote. “But be sure that whenever you’re reading ad hominem comments, thinly veiled attacks on people’s fidelity to the faith, snide insinuations and malicious twisting of words, you are not reading theology. You are reading hate.”

I hope that leaves a mark. Douthat is such a sanctimonious prude.

Almost all of the JLENS program costs were R&D, according to ‘Defense Industry Daily.’ Only about $40m in military construction.

How much of that do you wanna bet was in the form of no-bid, cost-plus contracts?

re: #191 Charles Johnson

The F-35 program is projected to have a lifetime cost of $1.4 trillion.

A single Ford class aircraft carrier is expected to run $10 billion per copy (not counting operational costs, upgrades over time, manpower, etc., nor the aircraft that are on board).

Arguably the aircraft carriers serve a good purpose - they have life cycles measured in 40-50 years, are able to provide not only military power projection, but can assist with disaster recovery (see SE Asian tsunami/quake, Katrina, etc.)

The F-35 program is an example of the military seeking a jack of all trades, master of none monstrosity that costs several times as much as the planes its supposed to replace, and can’t do any of the replacement jobs nearly as well - the USAF has an A-10 that can do air to ground for a fraction of the price, while the F-35 can’t even use its guns in any role for a couple more years til they get the bugs out.

The F-22, which is another major plane program, is a hanger queen.

The B-2? Hanger queen program that was cut from a 132 plane run to 20+ planes, because of costs. The B-52 may outlast both the B-1 and B-2 projects.

The USAF is now looking at a long range bomber replacement to the B-2 (LRS-B), and that contract is also going to be in the $80 billion dollar range. My guess is that they’ll find a way to keep the B-52 aloft even as they deploy and then retire the LRS-B project.

Military acquisitions in the US is a completely FUBAR process. But when you have contractors spreading out subcontracts to pretty much every single congressional district, you get projects that no one wants (like forcing the US Army to rebuild/rehab tanks it didn’t want or need).

This is just my opinion mind you, but I get really fucking pissed when I see pleas for money to take care of veterans coming from charities, charities that should never have to exist in the first damned place. That should be built into the DOD budget, period, full stop. It’s not, and the VA system is separate, mismanaged and grossly underfunded. If we took 25 percent out of the DOD and spent it on veterans, none would be homeless, all would be cared for and there would be plenty of money left for a comprehensive GI Bill program for vets and their families.

Of course the reason it’s so hard to cut the defense budget is by design. Projects are scattered all over the States so any cuts are correlated with jobs and then people freak out about layoffs. This is in addition to the whole “we have to be tough on terror” bullshit we’ve been sold over the last 14 years. There’s no real oversight and the waste is astounding. We once retooled every factory we could toward the war effort, why can’t we reverse that and create new jobs that aren’t defense related? I know the answer, but it still needs to be asked, often.

The national debt is a big reason why I’m in favor of the estate tax. The deficit doesn’t care whether you spent too much or didn’t collect enough in taxes. BUT, one way or another, we aren’t paying enough taxes to pay the bill. And that estate was built with money that wasn’t taxed at a high enough rate to pay the bills. I realize that there are philosophical issues about trying to prevent aristocracy (or something to that effect), but the deficit is my main concern about the estate tax.

Well, how about an amendment that says if you have a military budget part of it goes to paying off ALL costs of that military like healthcare and education programs for all veterans, especially any veteran that suffers any injury (yes, mental too).

SteveMcGaziBolaGate  Oct 28, 2015 • 1:26:47pm

My experience with defense spending was with little rubber rollers that were used to roll missile propellant logs. We made them a couple of times in the 60s and we saved the mold all through the 70 and 80 and into the 90s. Short story long, The navy was using the little bastards all along and was having a devil of a time getting good ones. So up and coming supply officer went and actually looked at the blueprint and saw my company’s name and called us. We gave them a price (and for once they didn’t have to pay for the mold, which they had to over and over again), and everything was all set to go… except the price was over $2500 and it had to go for bid. We didn’t get the job. Some guy from a Philadelphia suburb got the job, (and it turned out he got the job over and over all these years). Short story longer, his rollers only lasted about a shift and a half, so the navy sent us used rollers to reclaim because the repair didn’t have to go through bidding. All we did was use the rubber formula on the blueprint and our rollers lasted about a month. Problem was, we couldn’t get the new roller bid. Instead, the navy would send us the brand new rollers, still in their packaging, for us to strip and remold with the proper rubber compound.

Most of that estate was built with money that wasn’t *ever* taxed, at *any* rate.

When we say Mark Zuckerberg is worth $XB, that doesn’t mean he has $XB. It means he owns stock that if he were to sell it, if he were to convert that stock into money, it would then be $XB. But what it is today, is unrealized capital gains. It’s never been taxed, and it won’t be until it changes hands. Dying/leaving it to an heir = changing hands, at which time it should of course be taxed.

If you don’t want the government getting their greedy little paws on money you think they’ll spend stupidly… spend it before you die. Andrew Carnegie was once the richest man in America, and he left no estate. Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are today the two richest men in America, and neither of them intends to leave an estate. The wealth is getting back out into the economy, being spent usefully, and the taxman never touched it.

Here’s Dr. Ben explaining why the Big Bang theory is wrong, I think.

You know, you’ve got this mass bending and then it explodes. In physics, we have something we call “angular momentum,” and it is preserved, so it should be preserved in any orbit of anything that is affected by gravity around a planet, which means everything has to traverse in the same direction. Well, it doesn’t! There are many planets that have satellites and moons that go in opposite directions. So that doesn’t work with angular momentum!

I hope he gets asked to expand on this during the “debate” tonight.

OK, so this is OT.

As a bit of an aircraft nut since I was but a wee lad, I have a geek’s complaint to make with Mr. Spielberg’s latest (which I fully intend to see once it’s available at home — don’t like going out to the movies anymore), Bridge of Spies.

I read Operation Overflight when it came out in hardcover (having a father who is a military history geek left its mark on me….). It’s Francis Gary Powers’ autobiography, a very interesting read. Years later, I encountered a book called May Day by Michael Beschloss. The U2 incident was seismic in its reach, and both of these are fascinating reads that I HIGHLY recommend.

I’m pretty certain that Bridge is accurate in terms of the machinations and implications of the incident; HOWEVER….I can’t help but be annoyed at one rather glaring problem: the U2 used in the airborne sequences appears to be a later variation of the aircraft than the one that was shot down. Aircraft geeks, take a look:

Powers and the U2 that he piloted:

A screenshot from the movie:

Look at the nose. The film version features the modern upgrades, not the original design.

Nit-picky, I know. But since it’s all CGI, couldn’t they have taken the time to use a period-correct version of the plane, fer chissakes?????

/rant off

You may now return to your regularly-scheduled programming.

I agree Glenn but just because you’re on a sixth grade debating level doesn’t make you much better.

Cannot believe this guy is a sheriff with all this derp. I’m seriously thinking about writing in someone really silly for Sheriff this election.

Back when we New York City Slickers used to vote for sheriff (the mayor appoints them now), I always wrote in Richard M. Nixon, even after he croaked. Couldn’t imagine anyone better qualified for evicting the poor and the elderly.

I apologize if I asked this before but is the county that Clarke is sheriff of a suburban county? It’s called Milwaukee but Maryland has Baltimore county which is different from the city of Baltimore itself and much more conservative.

Ben Carson’s sekrit super PAC The 2016 Committee has been busted as a sponsor of the 9th World Congress on Families now going on in Salt Lake City.

It should be noted that the SPLC has identified the WCF as a hate group. It’s certain the WCF had some virulently anti-GLBT speakers ar the conference.

Busted, I say! BUSSSSTED!

Reince Priebus is telling Chuck Todd there is no split in the party, and if there was one beginning to form, Paul Ryan will be the unifier and get everyone back together.

Anyone buying? I’m not. Reince is not facing the truth, but when has he.

Milwaukee. A filthy pit of racist scum. He’s the darling of RWNJ here, because hey, they have a black friend they can point to. Also he promises to “crush ” the thugs (wink wink). All his department does is patrol the lakefront, freeway and courthouse. All could be done with Pinkerton’s. He’s one of the worthless losers he’s always crying about.
