You can watch this deba(te|cle) over the web here, but you’ll need to have a cable TV account. Here’s our first thread to live-blog the mess, as a pack of Republicans tries to pretend they have the best plan for America’s economy, even though some of them (I’m looking at you, Bobby Jindal) have ruined their own states with right wing economic policies.

Just posted this in the previous thread right as this came up…

Well, unless they carry a Formula One race because NBCSports has another event on at the same time, which does happen, there sure is nothing about CNBC that would make me watch this crap. God the talking heads on currently are just terrible. I guess anyone can work in TV.

I’m watching my nephew’s soccer practice. The boys are 6… They seem to understand soccer better than the republican candidates understand policy.

It’s a tough balancing act between acting natural enough to be likable and acting fundamental enough to be electable. You have to choose your sins wisely; drinking is a good one because although it’s technically frowned upon, almost everybody does it anyway.

Claiming you can drink a lot has a pretty poor recent electoral record. Here’s UK Conservative leader William Hague, on his way to being crushed by Tony Blair in 2001, claiming he once drank 14 pints of beer a day.

For theirs is no ordinary insolence,—no common and endurable audacity. They think of nothing but slaughter, conflagration, and rapine. They have dissipated their patrimonies, they have squandered their fortunes. Money has long failed them, and now credit begins to fail; but the same desires remain which they had in their time of abundance. “

Lets look at some wiki.

Really a mixed bag.

2014 re-election campaign[edit]
Main article: Ohio gubernatorial election, 2014
In November 2014, Kasich won re-election, defeating Democrat Ed FitzGerald, the county executive of Cuyahoga County, 64% to 33%. He won 86 of 88 counties.
Kasich, who was elected with Tea Party support in 2010, faced some backlash from some tea party activists. His decision to accept the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act’s expansion of Medicaid caused some Tea Party activists to refuse to support his campaign.

In 1997, Kasich rose to national prominence after becoming “the chief architect of a deal that balanced the federal budget for the first time since 1969”—the Balanced Budget Act of 1997.[45]
In 1998, Kasich voted to impeach President Clinton on all four charges made against him.[46] In 1999, while the Senate prepared to vote on the charges, Kasich said: “I believe these are impeachable and removable offenses.”[47]

In April 2015, Kasich signed a bill aimed at protecting Lake Erie’s water quality.[84][85] The bill places restrictions on the spread of manure and other fertilizers that contribute to toxic algal blooms and requires large public water treatment plants to monitor phosphorus levels.[84] The bill had been unanimously approved by both chambers of the Ohio Legislature the previous month.[84]

But YIKES!

Abortion[edit]
In June 2013, Kasich signed into law a state budget which included anti-abortion measures such as mandating any woman seeking an abortion to have a trans-abdominal ultrasound, and barring abortion providers from entering into emergency transfer agreements with public hospitals.[73] The bill stripped some $1.4 million in federal dollars from Planned Parenthood by placing the organization last on the priority list for family-planning funds.[73][74] The bill also provided funding to crisis pregnancy centers, which do not provide abortion referrals.[74] Under the budget, rape crisis centers could lose public funding if they counseled sexual assault victims about abortion.[74] Since 2011, Governor Kasich has signed 16 anti-abortion measures into law.[75]

There was a time when I thought a national sales tax would be the way to go. But when you start considering what you’d have to exclude - real estate, food, probably clothing, possibly used items; and what you’d have to include - services; and the added cost to businesses to deal with it - it just doesn’t make sense.

Supplementing the income tax with a value added tax might make sense, but even that seems less useful than just fixing our current tax code

Notable about that 2014 election: Kasich only increased his vote total by 55,000 from his 2010 nailbiter. Sadly, the Democrats’ Ed FitzGerald was a crapass candidate.

Kasich’s vote would have lost the Presidential election in Ohio in every year since 1972.

It’s not a surprise really. HE was part of the Gingrich revolution. I mean FFS last time’s “moderate” was Huntsman who still wanted to abolish the EPA.
