There really is something both unsurprising and yet nauseating about the GOP’s insistence that Hillary can’t be trusted when every single one of their candidates not only lies like a rug, but responds to being called on it with hostility.

Would the media actually be willing to describe those questions honestly? Would they bother to tell anyone why those aren’t reasonable questions?

I’ve had my moments of wondering what would happen if a Republican candidate went full Jake Featherston and started openly advocating genocide against nonwhite Americans, and encouraged his followers to start immediately. He’d blow past Trump and Carson like an F-22 on full afterburner.

So. Locked the keys in my rental car. OnStar was seconds away from unlocking it then said the contract hadn’t been filed right. Had to bum a ride back to the hotel and have to have one of my workers pick me up at 5 am. Gave my last cash to another to take a cab to work tomorrow so had to wait till I got back to hotel to order food. It’s cold and rainy—wind chill about 28 degrees. Other than that, it’s been a peachy day. On, and had to see Trump and Cruz blabbing on the TV machine all day. Arrrggh.

Republican presidential campaigns are planning to gather in Washington, D.C., on Sunday evening to plot how to alter their party’s messy debate process — and how to remove power from the hands of the Republican National Committee.

Again I ask, how in the world does Priebus get to keep his job?

Because there’s no way to be reasonably sure that anyone else could do any better, and because this is the result of forces beyond the RNC’s control.

Between this and the Speaker of the House mess, the GOP is eating itself alive these days.

These men don’t want debates. They want to stand at a podium, spout talking point after talking point and get rapturous applause for it.

I have decided that in 4 years I’m going to take a sabbatical from whatever I’m doing and run for President on the GOP ticket. Since apparently facts don’t matter and any connection between policy proposals and reality is tangential at best, I figure I can make up any old shit I want and then when the media calls me on it, I’ll just rant on “Lamestream Driveby Media”.

Of course, at some point, probably my intestines will jump out of my body and strangle me to put an end to it, but that ‘s the risk I’m willing to take.

I used to live in the upper right left corner of that picture, southern tip of the Sinai. Was there for a year with the Multi-National Force and Observers that came out of the Camp David Accords. When I was there there, there was NOTHING down there outside our area, a couple of cheap tourist hotels / beach cabins was about it.. It was like Panama City Beach for Euro College Students.

Google maps tells me it’s not like that any more. I did find South Camp (where I was), but none of those hotels and resorts, and sure as hell, none of those golf courses were there at the time.

Going to have the micro 4/3rd Olympus w strobe in an underwater housing, Go-Pro mounted on top on the cold shoe, a second Oly 4/3 for surface use and maybe the Canon t1i in the car as a backup.

between that, dive gear, extra gear, zombie gear I’m pretty damn glad I’m driving a mini-van now.

Little Cottonwood Canyon is definitely more affordable to live near, its proximity to SLC makes it so. Jackson Hole regularly gets ranked as one of the most expensive places to live.

But the Jackson Hole ski area is so burly! LCC is burly, too, but not 4,000 vertical feet burly.

Then there’s the snow. LCC edges out JH in that department more often than not. If JH got LCC snow, I’d pick JH without hesitation.

I’ve been catching up on the threads and saw the discussion about CCJ disavowing that address on the C&D letter he posted online.

He says he saw the process server, with a gun, drop the documents by his front door. Also, he called the police.

The address on the letter is Siena Lane, and it is marked “via in-person service.” So, the process server clearly knew where to go. Also, clearly CCJ received the documents.

Now, CCJ claims he is no longer at that address, and has blurred the address on the posted letter to protect the current residents.

So, how did he happen to be at the Siena address just as the process server arrived? If he wasn’t living at the Siena address, how was he served the papers? Is he perhaps describing the incident from his new address?

Incidentally, the Siena property is a rental, so it is possible the current residents and/or landlord referred the server to the correct address, This new address, however, is not attached to any public records associated with CCJ or Got News.

Btw, that’s a really good photoshop job.

Thanks!

In case anybody is interested here’s my totally 100% unasked-for tutorial. Something like 90% of a successful PS head swap is picking the source material wisely, mostly just making sure that lighting patterns don’t clash too harshly and that you aren’t losing too much resolution. That makes everything else SO much easier.

Start of feathering selections or playing with “refine edge” to capture flyaway hairs. Then paste the selection onto the original image as a new layer. After that you use free transform to rotate and scale the swap and then go to town with the eraser set to brush at a medium opacity to get rid of the parts that aren’t working. The Clone Stamp tool is useful for getting rid of inconvenient bits on the underlying layer, again this is where picking good source material pays off, some backgrounds are easier to clone than others. Clone Stamp is also useful if you’ve gotten a little carried away with the eraser and need to bring back areas you’ve accidentally made partially transparent and failed to notice until the undo state has been exceeded. Then Use Levels, Color Balance, Dodge and Burn to try and match the apparent lighting. Sometimes you’ll need to add noise or blur as well, just look at the upper layer and ask yourself what needs to change to make it look like part of the lower layer.

That’s pretty much it. Sometimes I’ll use other tools like Liquify to create more material to work with (usually on necks.)

If he can’t be reached at that address he needs to update Got News’s registered agent location with the California Secretary of State. Right now it lists him as the registered agent and that as the official location for process servers to deliver notices. Because service by mail is valid in California it’s pretty reckless of him not to update that record as it can lead to default court judgments being entered against him. This is why many companies hire registered agents instead of trying to fill that function themselves.

Michael Steele got canned because he tried to keep a lid on the crazy and not let the GOP brand become indelibly associated with it. He realized that the GOP needs the support of people who are not inbred, racist, bigoted ideologues.

But the moneyed interests behind the GOP thought they could harness the “energy” of the ranting mouth-breathers and still maintain control of the party.

We now see what that strategy has led to.

I wonder why Jeb? didn’t tell her the only job she was qualified for with that degree was at Chik-Fil-a (and no, I don’t know how it’s spelled).

She(Carly) made a joke in a commencement speech she gave about how useless her degrees were. Oh, and she began by telling the graduates and their families, many from China and Saudi Arabia, “first, let me say that the United States is the greatest country in the world!” That took guts. I was probably more put off than the foreign students and their families, for sure. It had the feel of a stump speech (this was before she had officially entered, I think). I certainly wasn’t pleased when she took an indirect swipe at the humanities by ridiculing the value of her own degrees. I think she should be applauded for succeeding as she did in a man’s world, but whether she’ll admit it or not, they helped prepare her for the next stages in her trajectory. The comment was probably reflexive, but it’s of a piece with the dismissive comments Jeb made and more generally with an American (mostly conservative) attitude toward intellectual pursuits.

The media does like a good narrative. I do think it’s become apparent that Rubio is quickly becoming the establishment’s guy since I think they really think that it was merely Obama’s youth and immigrant son status that compelled him to success. I think Marco’s an empty suit. He hardly ever votes. He talks a moderate game but got elected in the 2010 freak wave and his positions are just as extreme ans the others. His age and first generation American status don’t change that at all and I hope if he is the nominee or VP pick that the Dems let people know that.

That’s what I pointed out. It’s a moot point though. Everyone in my immediate family wouldn’t touch the Republican Party with a dirty rod but I did need to point out that a lot of Marco is just rhetoric. re: #212 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge

For me there’s an axis missing in this graph. “Left” and “Right” started out as a purely economic axis. Social issues weren’t part of politics until the recrudescence of fanatical religion in the 19th Century—when paradoxically, the Liberals thought the poor could be “improved” by a heavy dose of Bourgeois morality, while the Conservatives thought that it was a bit much to condemn them to live in misery while denying them what little enjoyment they could get out of life. Oh, and “uplifting” the Lower Orders™ was a lost cause, anyway.

Then, in the Nuclear Era, a third Hawk/Dove axis became necessary. You had people who were all right on most things like our long-time Senator Henry Jackson, who were just nuts on the Defense issues.

That three-axis political space was the one I grew up in, and I think lately people have started squashing the Social and Defense axes together, creating kind of a confusing picture—for a Cold War brat like me, anyway.

They’re working on making sure that people whom they think vote for Democrats are disallowed to vote. That’s what all the Voter ID laws are for; closing voter registration locations in THOSE areas, making it harder to get a proper ID; passing laws that people who were in prison cannot vote - and ensuring that a lot of people go to prison.

The Republican’s can’t win on ideas. They know that. The whole debate debacle is almost funny if you consider they say they want to talk more but their ideas aren’t popular or don’t make sense.

Actually an omnibus appropriation bill that decides how the money will be spent still needs to be passed. re: #222 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge

Oh, and “uplifting” the Lower OrdersTM was a lost cause, anyway.

These are all very good points.

That’s what I pointed out. It’s a moot point though. Everyone in my immediate family wouldn’t touch the Republican Party with a dirty rod but I did need to point out that a lot of Marco is just rhetoric. I mean there’s lots of people with genuinely humble backgrounds who will fuck over other people and conversely there are people with well to do backgrounds who care about less well off people like FDR and the Kennedies.

Carson and Ryan are perfect examples. Both had support that created those boot straps they love so much. Now, both are intent on removing that support from anyone else. It’s a classic case of IGMFY from both of them.

So we did a family poll last night- “Which Republican do you find least offensive?”. Brother and I chose Kasich. Parents and grandma chose Rubio and Fiorina. Had to point out that Marco hasn’t voted on a lot of things and Fiorina bankrupted HP but my Dad had to remind me that the question was like asking you if you wanted to get hit with a shovel or tire iron and I quickly dropped my objection but I do think voters need to see what Marco Rubio actually is. Yeah he talks about his genuinely humble upbringing, it’s too bad that he wants to fuck over other people who also have maids for mothers or bartenders s for fathers so his rich buddies can get tax breaks.

I’d say the one I find least offensive is actually Huckabee.

He’s the only one honest enough to admit that the America he wants is Unconstitutional and that he’d have to destroy the nation that exists to create the evil one he wants.

The honesty of his evil intention is refreshing when compared to the rest of them lying through their teeth about how much they love America.

There was a rule being followed that meant they couldn’t vote for cloture until Friday, related to when the bill was introduced into the Senate. Someone obviously wanted it to be ASAP on Friday - or maybe they all wanted to get away as early as possible for their long weekend. There is also a rule that a vote cannot take place until 1 hour into a day - hence the 1am.

Then again
Senate leaders scheduled the late-night vote to reduce their colleagues’ incentive to prolong the process. Majority Whip John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas, hoped that “maybe they would decide it would be better to speak when people are actually paying attention.”

We can show, for example, Stalin, Mao Tse Tung and Pol Pot, with their commitment to a totally controlled economy, on the hard left. Socialists like Mahatma Gandhi and Robert Mugabe would occupy a less extreme leftist position.

There has to be a greater segmentation than that. It just seems like a lot of extremes. Pol Pot is a hard leftist? Really?

And the arrogance displayed towards countries that have a history (in various forms) going back thousands of years, ten times as long as the United States has existed.

My favourite author describes ‘Western Civilization’ as a lengthy inferiority complex.

We are, for the most part, descended from the barbarians that destroyed Rome. Our ancestors saw it, were amazed by it but couldn’t understand it and ended up destroying it.

We’ve been trying ever since to restore the glory of Rome in our own political creations. It’s why so much of our architecture and political ideas are cribbed from Rome. It’s why some of the later empires actually named their emperors ‘Caesar’ (Kaiser, Czar)

America is the most recent manifestation of this cultural inferiority complex.

Of course the Romans had an inferiority complex about Greece. ;)

Welp, looks like we are getting deeper into Syria.

U.S. to Deploy Special Operations Forces in Syria: Official

The White House will announce Friday that a small number of U.S. special operations forces will be sent into Syria as part of a shift in its strategy against ISIS, according to officials.

A senior administration official confirmed that President Barack Obama has authorized a contingent of less than 50 special operations forces to deploy to northern Syria.

“We have been focused on intensifying elements of our strategy that have been working, while also moving away from elements of our approach that have proven less effective,” the official explained.

The move will be described as a “shift” but not a “change” in U.S. strategy against ISIS, according to another senior U.S. official. The official said the special operations forces will be stationed in northern Syria and work alongside groups with a “proven track record” of fighting ISIS.

Of course, the party that produced jokes about Chelsea, when she was just a kid, or Amy Carter at a similar age, not to mention the “Our women are hot, yours are all old bags” memes is not in any position to be outraged.

It’s funny, because I really think things like Trump’s appearance are fair game, because of the degree of ego and self-delusion his elaborate combover indicates. And Fiorina’s “If looks could kill” stare at interviewers asking uncomfortable questions like, “Isn’t it true you just make this shit up?” seems within bounds.

Exactly the correct analogy. That’s how I see politics and statements of love of country.

You can love your country, be proud of your country, and appreciative of where the gift of birth landed you. But if you can’t do it without denigrating another, IMHO, you’re a worthless POS.

If you love your children and parents more than any other children or parents, it’s not because they’re objectively the best children and parents. You love them because they’re *yours*. This makes you quick to identify their most lovable characteristics, and willing to overlook or excuse their flaws.

Love of country works the same way. Or at least it should.

Yeah, it is “iffy”

I think they were making fun of her fake smile rather than making a judgement about her actual “looks”.

Hey, remember when Carly made fun of Barbara Boxer’s hair?

“God what is that hair?’ So yesterday!”

I think she puts on her Sister Mary Fiorina stern face as an act that she is being deadly serious (to cover the fact she is outright lying).

Her other big trick at the same time is to speak in all caps, one word sentences.

Wait a minute…was this pot thing with Kasich a real story? I thought it was agitprop by a rival campaign.

If this is true, he’s done. I don’t see the Law and Order people on the right letting that go.

Wow.

I remember not-so-fondly the I Didn’t Inhale thing and when that was enough to get the right slobberingly angry.

p.s. Now the damned cover just popped into place. Okie dokie.

Who knows if it is true. It would not surprise me knowing the times and knowing a little bit about the young Kasich.

This new ‘allegation’ was made by a Trump hit man, former Trump adviser/snake-handler Roger Stone. Just like The Donald™ to have one of his dirty dealers dump on Kasich since Kasich has gone after Trump about being crazy-talking and not a politician.

I’m skeptical of it too. Just seems awfully weirdly timed that STone is saying this now. Now former drug dealer or not, Kasich is very wrong about marijuana. I don’t know why he feels the need to outright lie about Marijuana. Hey, it was 1976. Kasich was just out of college and had to make ends meet. He sure wasn’t going to try to get any social help of any kind like food stamps. He was just being an entrepreneur pulling up his boot straps and making others happy.

They actually asked them direct, detailed questions about their policies and the implications thereof. On the tax issue in particular this is kryptonite for the Republicans, and they know it.

The media narrative of the past three days has been pretty brutal for them IMO. You simply can’t have people pointing out that your la-la-land tax plan blows a $2 trillion hole in the budget. That’s the kind of number even a low-information voter takes note of.

The Fox debate was a thinly-veiled attempt to kill Trump’s momentum by needling him on specifics while mostly lobbing softballs to the establishment guys. I didn’t see the second one but I didn’t get the impression they went after anyone particularly hard.

Of course, older generations have been complaining about younger generations since hominids first developed language. Before that, the old folks just grunted and shook their heads a lot.

I found a quote from the 13th century of a merchant in Cambridge bitching about the college students doing nothing but drinking and acting rowdy. Used it in a speech I gave at my social fraternity’s national meeting. Roughly making the same point about the older generations carping about the younger ones.

I was doing a Google search on news for Kasich this morning and I saw several articles praising him for telling it like it is and being realistic on taxes, the economy, working with Dems, etc. It seemed many were from fairly conservative sites and publications.

I know he got panned by most as not being successful in the past debate, but I am wondering if that is the media saying he was attacking enough like he said he was going to do, or if he was just out shouted by the others.

It is going to be interesting to see newer polls next week to see what damage the debate did to the GOP candidates.

Apparently GOPers don’t get that flat tax schemes or other GOP plans to shift tax burdens from the rich to everyone else will massively expand the national deficit/debt.

And arguing that the current tax scheme is bad is not proof that a flat tax will solve the problem either.

Yet, they keep with this nonsense.

If anything, the last 30 years have suggested that we ought to revert to a tax system seen in the 1950s (when we had significant economic expansion and the government trimming the national debt). You know, when there were tax rates as high as 91% for income in the top bracket (before they began to slide down in the 1960s to 70% and then down to the 40s and under 40% we see today).

The only DNC debate was chock full of questions about real issues and the party actually applauded the performance of their candidates and appreciated the focus on answering the questions rather than spewing stump speeches or taking turns bitchslapping each other.

re: #448 HappyWarrior

There are no stupid questions, but there are a lot of inquisitive idiots.
