RNC Cancels NBC Debate — The Whining Continues

The Party Of Whining, Crying, Complaining, And Playing The Victim
Politics • Views: 65,886

RNC chairman Reince Priebus has informed NBC that the RNC is cancelling the Republican debate scheduled to air on NBC later. The reason given was that CNBC was just too darn mean to his candidates.

Full Letter here

Mr. Andrew Lack
Chairman, NBC News
30 Rockefeller Plaza
New York, New York 10112

Dear Mr. Lack,

I write to inform you that pending further discussion between the Republican National Committee (RNC) and our presidential campaigns, we are suspending the partnership with NBC News for the Republican primary debate at the University of Houston on February 26, 2016.

[…]

The CNBC network is one of your media properties, and its handling of the debate was conducted in bad faith. We understand that NBC does not exercise full editorial control over CNBC’s journalistic approach. However, the network is an arm of your organization, and we need to ensure there is not a repeat performance.

CNBC billed the debate as one that would focus on “the key issues that matter to all voters—job growth, taxes, technology, retirement and the health of our national economy.” That was not the case. Before the debate, the candidates were promised an opening question on economic or financial matters. That was not the case. Candidates were promised that speaking time would be carefully monitored to ensure fairness. That was not the case. Questions were inaccurate or downright offensive. The first question directed to one of our candidates asked if he was running a comic book version of a presidential campaign, hardly in the spirit of how the debate was billed.

This comes after a full day of whining and crying from the right wing that their candidates were unfairly questioned about their positions. Here are some of the questions that drew the ire of the presidential candidates and their supporters:

HARWOOD: Mr. Trump, you’ve done very well in this campaign so far by promising to build a wall and make another country pay for it. Send 11 million people out of the country. Cut taxes $10 trillion without increasing the deficit. And make Americans better off because your greatness would replace the stupidity and incompetence of others. Is this a comic book version of a presidential campaign?

[…]

QUICK: Dr. Carson, let’s talk about taxes.

You have a flat tax plan of 10 percent flat taxes, and — I’ve looked at it — and this is something that is very appealing to a lot of voters, but I’ve had a really tough time trying to make the math work on this.

If you were to took a 10 percent tax, with the numbers right now in total personal income, you’re gonna come in with bring in $1.5 trillion. That is less than half of what we bring in right now. And by the way, it’s gonna leave us in a $2 trillion hole.
So what analysis got you to the point where you think this will work?

[…]

QUINTANILLA: One more question. This is a company called Mannatech, a maker of nutritional supplements, with which you had a 10-year relationship. They offered claims that they could cure autism, cancer, they paid $7 million to settle a deceptive marketing lawsuit in Texas, and yet you’re involvement continued. Why?

[…]

QUINTANILLA: Senator Cruz. Congressional Republicans, Democrats and the White House are about to strike a compromise that would raise the debt limit, prevent a government shutdown and calm financial markets that fear of — another Washington-created crisis is on the way.

Does your opposition to it show that you’re not the kind of problem-solver American voters want?

[…]

QUINTANILLA: Governor Bush, daily fantasy sports has become a phenomenon in this country, will award billions of dollars in prize money this year. But to play you have to assess your odds, put money at risk, wait for an outcome that’s out of your control. Isn’t that the definition of gambling, and should the Federal Government treat it as such?

So that’s a question to Trump about making ludicrous and impossible to keep promises, to Carson about taxes and about a scam company he has been paid by, a question to Cruz about the budget deal and a question about government regulating gambling.

And that’s just too much for these dainty little candidates. Good luck with Putin, guys

Hey! Here’s a great election trick that every conservative candidate should know:

Last year the US House candidacy of GOP former Stanislaus County Clerk and anti-abortion activist Karen Mathews Davis gained national attention when she claimed to have gotten death threats from anonymous writers who threatened to shoot her and her husband in the head if she didn’t withdraw from the race.

While the feds investigated, Davis told the local press that wasn’t going to “give in to terrorism” and that “if those people weren’t able to stop me from doing the right thing, then Obama and Pelosi don’t have a prayer.” Today Davis has been charged with lying to the FBI after confessing that she made it all up.

Chairman of the RNC, Reince Priebus has informed NBC that the RNC is cancelling the Republican debate scheduled to air on NBC later.

Was this the result of that meeting the candidates had that Reince wasn’t allowed to attend? Do they just deliver this stuff to him to announce as if it was a GOP decision?

“Questions were inaccurate or downright offensive.”

Charles P. Pierce:
GOP Debate: It Literally Does Not Matter What the Question Is

“…the highlight of the first hour, and the most vivid example of what was going on, was when Ted Cruz was asked about the budget deal that was struck this week between the Congress and the White House, and he replied by ripping the moderators up one side and down the other.
……………..
This wasn’t a lack of control. The format was fine. But there’s nothing you can do about someone like Ted Cruz, who isn’t encumbered by either truth or civility. Even defending the other candidates, he doesn’t care what damage he does, as long as he can stand atop the rubble. Come to think of it, that could be said of pretty much all of these people.”

I think we all know the reason why Rinsed pulled the plug, and it wasn’t because of the “gotcha” questions. It was because the GOP as a party cannot sustain itself any longer if it actually has to talk about the issues in any manner outside of a stump speech. When you actually start to get into the specifics of their proposals, you quickly realize that they’re either unworkable or batshit crazy. And so, for the GOP to keep winning elections, they have to keep bullshitting people into believing they’re anything but a bunch of theocratic con-artists.

I can’t think of anything that would be more detrimental to GOP chances in November than to nationally television that complete shit show

Reminds me of an old sports cliche: “When everything is going wrong for you, work the refs.”

In this case, work OVER the refs.

The trained seals in the audience, whose anger & resentment is pretty much all that’s left of their higher cognitive functions, then applaud on cue, like trained seals.

Honestly, I’d humor them and say “Okay, so you’re dealing with silly questions, how do you like President Obama feels when members of your party have to ask him about his citizenship?” Really these guys are nothing but a bunch of whiny brats. Yeah, that’s something that I’d like to see a debate moderator bring up. “If you think these questions are so tough, and you can’t stand this kind of heat … why is it that you think the American people should vote for you to go toe-to-toe with Vladimir Putin? By the evidence you’ve shown here tonight Mr. Cruz, you’d curl up in a ball, crying like a little sissy baby. NOW GO GET YOUR SHINE BOX!!!”

“…In a long-forgotten portion of the RNC’s 2012 “autopsy” report, party officials specifically argued, “The Republican Party needs to stop talking to itself. I guess that 2012 GOP autopsy was money well spent:

In what they called the “most comprehensive post-election review” ever made of an electoral loss, the Republican National Committee and a group of project co-chairs unveiled a report today saying that they need to open their playbook and put their “cards on the table face up” in order to win presidential elections in the future.

[…]

Bradshaw added that the GOP “needs to stop talking to itself” and needs to open the tent in order to win presidential elections in the future.

I’m really picky about what goes in my Facebook. I stick to music, skiing, and humor. Facebook is a cesspool as it is, I’ll only add shit that may tamp down the dumpster fire that is that site. I post something to Facebook about once or twice a week, if that.

Strangely, all reporting I am finding seems to link to this New York Post article

FBI warns of anarchist plot to ambush cops on Halloween
The FBI released an alert Monday warning the NYPD and police departments nationwide of a potentially dangerous anarchist group that says it plans to ambush cops on Halloween.

The extremist group - known as the National Liberation Militia - has proposed a “Halloween Revolt” that encourages supporters to cause a disturbance to attract police and then viciously attack them, the FBI said.

The group has recommended that members wear typical Halloween masks and use weapons such as bricks, bottles and firearms, according to the release.

The NYPD Intelligence Bureau is monitoring the threat, and there is no known link between the threat and New York City law enforcement specifically, the FBI said.

Edit:
I ventured to Breitbart, and they seem to have followed typical form and pointed toward “black power groups”, which of course is not mentioned or suggested anywhere else-

NBC noted that the FBI said that this “National Liberation Militia” is a group on their watch list, but also pointed out that little can be found about the group online. A look online shows a black power group called the New Black Liberation Militia, but no mention of the group revealed by the FBI this week. There is also no mention of the National Liberation Militia on the FBI’s website.

Still, it is not uncommon for first responders to be ambushed upon arriving at the scene of a fire or a crime.

Last November, for instance, in Leon County, Florida, police and firemen were fired upon when they responded to a house fire. One sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed, and a second deputy was also shot in the incident. The shooter was eventually killed by Tallahassee police who also responded to the scene.

Black Lives Matter protesters have also interfered with first responders. Earlier this year a rioter in Baltimore was arrested after cutting a fire hose when firemen arrived to put out the flames of a CVS pharmacy set ablaze by protesters. Also, during protests in New York in December of last year, several protesters tried to stop police from arresting a CUNY professor for throwing a trash can and inciting a riot.

Speaking of Snopes, this is why we can’t have nice things anymore:

Katy Skid
A middle school student in Katy, Texas, claimed her teacher insisted she deny the existence of God; but the assignment in question was taken far out of context in media reports. […]

snopes.com

The teacher didn’t do any such thing, she was trying to teach the kids critical thinking skills (the horror!) and asked them to classify several statements as a factual claims, assertions, or opinions. One of those statements was “There is a God.”

Naturally, this was taken out of context. The student clearly didn’t understand the assignment and I’m gonna guess the parents must’ve gone ballistic without fact checking anything (no doubt fearing some of that awful Christian persecution) and called the media, who made it even worse because… clickbait!

Sadly, both school and teacher were cowed by the outrage and as a result ungraded assignment was deemed “ill-conceived” and blamed for the girl’s inability to understand it. Therefore “the activity will no longer be used by the school, and the teacher has been advised and appropriate personnel action will be taken.”

WTF, America? In-effing-credible. I’m gonna log off before I totally lose my cool.

G’nite, lizards.

I mentioned this the other day, my friend from college who became a cop. He just posted this shit:

Dude, seriously?

If ‘good cops’ don’t stop circling the wagons whenever one of their number is caught redhanded abusing his authority, if they keep excusing the inexcusable, if they don’t stop blaming the victims, if they don’t start being the FIRST to attack the bad cops, they will lose respect even in those communities where they are still respected.

We give them the authority to kill people in our name, one of the most awesome responsibilities we can give. And they’re fucking it up.

GOP official admits to faking threats — and an innocent man may have spent 18 years in prison for it

Former Stanislaus County clerk recorder Karen Mathews Davis, who claimed she stood up to terrorists in the 1990s, admitted to federal authorities that she sent the threatening letters after she failed a polygraph test. She was arrested and charged in California on Wednesday. She was released Thursday after posting a $50,000 bond.

What concerns prosecutors is that Mathews Davis also claimed that Roger Steiner attacked and sexually assaulted her in her garage in 1994, resulting in Steiner being sent to a federal prison for 18 years.

According to former state and federal prosecutor Bill Portanova, the confession by Mathews Davis brings into question her accusations against Steiner who, to this day, maintains his innocence.

“And the intriguing part is the latest story that she admits is a lie sounds a lot like the first story that she testified to under oath,” Portanova said. “Depending on how severe the lies are and whether or not they are directly related to sending an innocent man to prison, she could going to prison herself for many years.”

I taught high school a long time. I can understand what that girl was doing, and why. She was challenging first her teacher’s authority, then the cop’s. But it was a minor infraction, and not worth calling in the cops.

Her teacher fucked up the situation by making a deal about the cellphone being out. Maybe it’s a school rule, but making a big stink about it disrupts the class way more than the student’s apparent disobedience. If the teacher had waited a few more minutes, or just conducted the day’s lesson, she probably would have put the phone away after a few minutes. Also, if the teacher tried to relate to the students better, he/she might have already known the girl had just lost her mom and then just let the cellphone thing slide.

I have lost my temper at my students, but only rarely. Having been a teacher, I know how absolutely frustrating working with teenagers can be sometimes, but there are some fights not worth fighting. It’s better to get on with the lessons, and hope the situation resolves itself, if it is not really disruptive to the class. As much as the cop deserved punishment, the teacher involved needs some counseling on classroom management.

A Russian civilian plane carrying 224 people crashed in Sinai on Saturday, the Egyptian Prime Minister said, amid earlier conflicting reports that the plane was safely continuing its journey.

Egyptian air traffic control lost contact with the Airbus A-321, operated by Russian airline Kogalymavia, shortly after it took off from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to head to Russia, aviation sources told Reuters news agency.

“The … Russian airline had told us that the Russian plane we lost contact with is safe and that it has contacted Turkish air traffic control and is passing through Turkish skies now,” Ayman al-Muqaddam, the head of the central air traffic accident authority in Egypt, said in a statement.

But local Egyptian media reported the plane had crashed in Sinai, a claim later confirmed by the PM.

The cause; indoor fireworks. There are quite a few of these disasters, The Station nightclub fire springing to my mind first and foremost as well as the Lame Horse Club disaster in Perm (150+ dead), the Kiss nightclub fire (242 dead), the República Cromañón disaster in Argentina (194 dead)…..all of them caused by the use of fireworks indoors.

When will people fucking learn?

The Station nightclub fire in Rhode Island. 100 dead, the cause of the disaster being the ignition of flammable material inside the club by the use of small pyrotechnics.

From what I’m reading, the cause of the fire in the Bucharest nightclub is identical to The Station - the band playing at Club Colectiv, Goodbye to Gravity, used pyrotechnics which caused the ignition of polyurethane acoustic foam material. Basically, this is a horrific replay of the 2003 Rhode Island disaster.

Speaking of Snopes, this is why we can’t have nice things anymore:

From what I’m reading, the crew of the aircraft lost in the accident had been complaining of engine problems to the techs at Sharm el-Sheikh Airport.

Crew members of the crashed airliner raised the issue of possible engine faults several times to airport technicians in Sharm el-Sheikh, a source at the airport has alleged in an interview with Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

“This aircraft appealed to the technical service in connection with engine start failure several times over the past week before this happened,” the source said.

Hmm. I just saw this on Wiki (again, grain of salt):

On November 16, 2001, while operating for Middle East Airlines, the aircraft suffered a tail strike landing in Cairo. The aircraft was repaired and went back into service with MEA in 2002

There was an incident in the past where a plane that hadn’t been properly repaired following a tail strike incident suffered catastrophic airframe failure; the tail section behind the rear bulkhead fell off the plane at cruising altitude, IIRC.

Well, I don’t think they’ll be in business much longer.

There was probably little regular maintenance, including a necessary complete overhaul of the engines. Another possibility is bad fuel, or clogged fuel lines, but trouble with engine starts is a clear sign to switch aircraft, or ground the flight till further notice.

Yeah, those control surfaces are kinda necessary, and explosive decompression is not recommended for passenger comfort.

328
Dr Lizardo  Oct 31, 2015 • 5:44:59am

That was the disaster I was thinking of: China Airlines #611.

The final investigation report found that the accident was the result of metal fatigue caused by inadequate maintenance after an earlier tailstrike incident. On 7 February 1980, the aircraft was flying from Stockholm Arlanda Airport to Taoyuan International Airport via King Abdulaziz International Airport and Kai Tak International Airport on China Airlines Flight 009. While landing in Hong Kong, part of the plane’s tail had scraped along the runway for several hundred feet

However, the permanent repair of the tail strike was not carried out in accordance with the Boeing Structural Repair Manual (SRM). The area of damaged skin in Section 46 was not removed and the repair doubler plate that was supposed to cover in excess of 30 percent of the damaged area did not extend beyond the entire damaged area enough to restore the overall structural strength.

Consequently, after repeated cycles of depressurization and pressurization during flight, the weakened hull gradually started to crack and finally broke open in mid-flight on 25 May 2002, coincidentally 22 years to the day after the faulty repair was made upon the damaged tail. An explosive decompression of the aircraft occurred once the crack opened up, causing the complete disintegration of the aircraft in mid-air.

Japan Airlines Flight 123 worst single-aircraft accident in history (520 dead).
A quite elementary error, an incorrect configuration of the doubler plates in the repaired bulkhead, caused this catastrophe.

The worst part of that pic is the obvious racism. The second worst part is that it wasn’t local black people who burned down that Little Caesars down. it was burned by out-of-town “riot tourists” who used the Ferguson protests as an excuse to indulge themselves in destroying property and hurting police officers by fling frozen water bottles at them.

The destruction in Ferguson, MO, was not the product of “black criminality” or even racism, the arson and injuries were the products of young men* who happened to be black willfully deciding to indulge their destructive impulses.

*: I say ‘men’ not ‘people’ here because, while “riot tourism” is a cross-racial phenomenon, those who engage in it are overwhelmingly male (95%+).

A grain of truth to to what he says: we subject our cops to a great deal of unnecessary stress, expecting them to maintain order when people have easy access to deadly weapons, when a large number of mentally unstable persons are not properly treated or institutionalized and in a society which there are great economic and racial tensions.

It goes a way to explaining a lot of their behavior, but does not justify abuse.

The problem is not just the abuse. It’s the ‘circle the wagons’, ‘You can’t judge unless you’ve been a cop’, ‘Sure it’s inexcusable, but…’ attitude.

We give them guns and the authority to deal out violence and death against our own citizens in our name. There are few responsibilities as great as that. And now we’re finding that a significant number of them have been abusing that authority, and that if it weren’t for the omnipresence of cameras, we’d have shaken our heads sadly and talked about another person who foolishly tried to fight when they should have complied.

Respect for police is not unconditional. If the police want to keep what is left, and rebuild where it’s gone, they need to burn the bad cops. Openly, proactively, and without excuse. They need to be their own harshest critic. The ‘You can’t judge me’ attitude will totally fuck that up.

What you get is the incredibly bloody history of Europe, with wars driven by sectarian conflict and horrific internal audits of religious purity.

The Founders weren’t fucking around when they set up separation of church and state. What happened in Europe only a few generations before would have been in their minds, combined with the attempt of various colonies to transport that mess to the New World.

Now here is some interesting crying about the debate. Came across this looking at Kascih news in a Google search, because I figured Johnny would have a different take on the most recent GOP debate. Sure enough…but the RedState folks don’t like it.

I normally wouldn’t read RedState or link them, but the fact it was about Kasich liking the debate made me want to check it out.

donotlink.com

Some of the meat in the article…so you don’t even need the link, this get the point across.

Reporter: What did you think about the mainstream media’s questions tonight? What did you think about the moderators?

Kasich: I thought they did a good job. I’m very pleased with, I had time to speak and talk about the fantasy land and also be able to talk about my plans and my programs, the things that I know we can do together to get the budget balanced and create jobs and fix this country. So I’m very appreciative of how they did their job tonight. It wasn’t a circus like we’ve had in the past. It was well done, well controlled, a lot of good questions, and hopefully this will be what we’ll see in the future.

For all that people criticize Jeb Bush, Kasich is far and away the candidate in this field who is just utterly clueless about the Republican electorate as a whole. Worse, to the extent that Kasich does understand Republicans, he dislikes them.

In fact, part of the structural problem that made the debate a “crap sandwich” to begin with is that the CNBC moderators allowed Kasich - who was in last place among those on stage - the first question and gave him the opportunity to filibuster at length about how stupid Republican voters (and the other Republican candidates were). While the rest of America sat horrified at the ridiculous irrelevant gotcha questions that were clearly designed to make all Republicans look bad and crazy, Kasich thought to himself, “this is my kind of debate! Finally America is going to get to see how crazy all these Republicans are!”

Here is de facto evidence of CNBC’s liberal bias: John Kasich, who is in dead last and whose sole purpose on stage was to attack Republicans, got more speaking time than Donald Trump or Ben Carson. Trump and Carson each have more than ten times the support that Kasich has, and there’s nothing about Kasich that makes him especially compelling either as a story or as a television draw. He’s a grumpy old white dude who basically is Bob Dole without the personality and charm. As much as I’m not a personal fan of either Trump or Carson, there’s no justifiable reason that Kasich should have gotten more air time than either and the fact that he did is pretty conclusive proof of what CNBC is up to.

Kasich hopes there will be more debates like the CNBC debate. Per Reince Priebus, those aren’t going to happen on the Republican side, so maybe Kasich can find another party - one he hates less - to debate for.

Now that is some crying. Johnny Kasich isn’t Republican enough for RedState.

HaHaHaHaHaHa. As an Ohioan, that is damn funny. But it is funny to see Kasich shakin’ it up. He can be a dick…but this time his dickishness is pissing off the GOP.

They eat their own.

OK, then… even leaving aside the notion that John Freakin’ Kasich is some sort of fringe RINO… (smh)

One has to wonder exactly who Leon Wolf thinks the “Republican electorate as a whole” actually is. I was originally going to frame this question in snarky form as “does he think ‘real Republican’ equates only to ‘RedState comment section’”, but on reflection I realized that the latter formulation was probably true.
If there wasn’t a nontrivial possibility that one of these ideologue mediocrities might actually get elected President it would be amusing. But not.

My guess is they’re trying to put Russia “On Tilt”. They want to make Putin and Russians in general angry in the hopes that Russia will lash out and make a mistake in doing so.

One has to wonder exactly who Leon Wolf thinks the “Republican electorate as a whole” actually is.

Easy question:

They’re people who go 26% each for Trump and Carson, and single digits for anyone who’s ever been a Senator or Governor.

The GOP thought it could harness the incoherent rage of people who hate government and anyone who is part of it (forgetting the of the people and by the people part) and they are getting their well deserved payback.

The bill on their Faustian deal has come due and now they watch as the soul of the party gets ripped apart by the very loonies they thought they could control.

I must admit now that I was wrong all those years ago. I once predicted, rather confidently, that the GOP leadership would club the Tea Partiers into line and the whole “movement” would die out within half a decade. I had no idea just how much of a total mockery that Citizens United would make of our democracy and reduce the leadership from the all-mighty masters into powerless halfwits who are watching their party get savaged by the forces they sought to unleash with that decision.

the sad part of it is that the TP itself is falling out of favor with the rest of America, but its power over the GOP remains unbroken

Ouch! That will leave a mark…

I doubt it: being slapped down by a Federal judge over PP is a great opportunity* for a GOP Governor/candidate. He can fulminate and rant against “liberal judges”, “judicial activism”, “liberal bias”, “overweening Federal government”, “states’ rights”, etc. ad nauseam; swear (loudly and publicly) to continue the Righteous Fight against the EEEEEVIL Planned Parenthood, and exploit the opportunity to try to gin up more “popular” outrage to get those endorsements and donations flowing in. Win-win (especially as PP will still get funding).

* or should be, given a decent candidate with a competent organization behind him. But then, this IS Piyush The Buffoon, so probably not.

The problem is the GOP and their base are comprised primarily of alpha male types who are all jockeying for power and money at the expense of everything else. It’s the natural conclusion to drawing that many people of that personality so close together.

It’s a group that is simply incapable of ever getting their shit together.

They put a big premium on ideological purity, and that rules out a basic principle of politics, namely compromise and cooperation.

The difference is simple: Teacher’s unions always endorse and provide activists for the Democrats, but police unions can go either way and will endorse and work with Republicans.

It’s rare for committed partisans to give the ‘other side’ a break. Those planning to reply to this post saying I’m putting out an MBF should include a case where they gave a notable break to a conservative Republican.

And why in the hell would a teachers union endorse a republican? It goes both ways you know. When has a conservative republican ever given a notable break to teachers?

The problem is, frankly, that teaching is a liberal undertaking. Working years to get credentialed, then work for the state, paid less than other professions but expected to be as dedicated. Service to society is not a Conservative value. That’s why teachers don’t tend to be Republicans - because Republicans don’t tend to be teachers.

I stand by what I’ve said all along. Assad is an asshole. But he’s an asshole we know and can deal with. He’s secular and won’t put up with any jihadist shit. We need to stay out (unfortunately, that’s not happening) and hope for the best. While we can’t support Assad, we shouldn’t be working to overthrow him either. No, I disagree. The Rank and Vile Republican tends to believe that the Private Sector does everything better. But it’s a BELIEF, an article of faith, that is not subject to empirical verification. It just IS TRUE.

I guess I believe that when conservatives say they can do it better it means that they can do it cheaper. Cheaper is always better.
