The Republican Party’s Extraordinary List of Demands for the Media

Egomaniacal crybabies - not a good look
Politics • Views: 54,951

Via Dave Weigel and Robert Costa at the Washington Post, here’s the complete draft of the letter Republican candidates are considering sending to TV networks, with their questions/demands about the upcoming debates.

None of the candidates have actually signed this yet, so it still could change. But it’s an extraordinary, over the top power play from the GOP; they’re trying to make sure the “debates” are nothing but opportunities for their candidates to present their talking points without being challenged by media.

I have to think this is going to hurt the Republican Party. It makes them look like a combination of egomaniacal bullies and fearful crybabies.

Dear _____:

This letter is on behalf of the 15 Republican Presidential campaigns. We are aware that you are sponsoring a debate on _____ at ______. Below and attached are questions about your debate to which the campaigns would appreciate answers at your earliest convenience, and in any event no later than a month from today.

The answers you provide to these questions are part of a process that each campaign will use to determine whether its candidate will participate in your debate. All the candidates recognize that robust debates are an important part of the primary elections. It is also important that all debates be appropriate platforms for discussing substantive issues and the candidates’ visions for the future.

To achieve this going forward, the campaigns ask that you:

- Answer the questions below within 30 days of receipt by communicating directly with the campaigns. We’ll provide an email list for that distribution.

- No later than a month before your debate (earlier if possible), schedule a conference with all the campaigns participating jointly so that the campaigns may ask questions about the format for your debate, the moderators and your answers to the questions below. The campaigns may request an additional call(s) to discuss specific issues.

- The campaigns’ will use the manner in which your debate(s) are run (and changes you say you will make from your past debates), the quality and fairness of your moderators’ questions, their enforcement of the rules and their ability to achieve parity in distribution and quality of questions and time among the candidates to evaluate whether the candidates wish to participate in your future debates.

- In addition, based on their evaluation of previous debates, the campaigns wish to have in all future debates a minimum 30-second opening statement and a minimum 30-second closing statement for each participant; candidate pre-approval of any graphics and bios you plan to include in your broadcast about each candidate, and that there be no “lightning rounds” because of their frivolousness or “gotcha” nature, or in some cases both.

The campaigns appreciate your participation to achieve what they feel is a great need for more accountability and transparency in their primary debate process. In addition to addressing the above points, please answer the following:

 Where and when will the debate be held?

 What are criteria for inclusion? If you choose to base this on polls, please detail which polls and why each poll’s methodology and sample size is acceptable to you.

 Who is the moderator? Will there be any additional questioners? Are they seated?

 What is the estimated audience for the debate? Will it be disseminated on-line? By radio? Will it be disseminated by other means and do you have any additional partners?

 What format do you envision - podiums, table, other?

 Will there be questions from the audience or social media? How many? How will they be presented to the candidates? Will you acknowledge that you, as the sponsor, take responsibility for all questions asked, even if not asked by your personnel?

 What is your proposed length of the debate?

 Will there be opening and closing statements. How long will they be?

 Will you commit to provide equal time/an equal number of questions of equal quality (substance as opposed to “gotcha” or frivolous) to each candidate?

 How long are the answers and rebuttals? If a candidate is mentioned, will he/she automatically be called on so they can rebut?

 Will there be a gong/buzzer/bell when time is up? How will the moderator enforce the time limits?

 Will you commit that you will not:

o Ask the candidates to raise their hands to answer a question

o Ask yes/no questions without time to provide a substantive answer

o Have a “lightning round”

o Allow candidate-to-candidate questioning

o Allow props or pledges by the candidates

o Have reaction shots of members of the audience or moderators during debates

o Show an empty podium after a break (describe how far away the bathrooms are)

o Use behind shots of the candidates showing their notes

o Leave microphones on during breaks

o Allow members of the audience to wear political messages (shirts, buttons, signs, etc.). Who enforces?

 What is the size of the audience? Who is receiving tickets in addition to the candidates? Who’s in charge of distributing those tickets and filling the seats?

 What instructions will you provide to the audience about cheering during the debate?

 What are the plans for the lead-in to the debate (Pre-shot video? Announcer to moderator? Director to Moderator?) and how long is it?

 Are you running promo ads before the debate about your moderator(s)?

 What type of microphones (lavs or podium)?

 Can you pledge that the temperature in the hall be kept below 67 degrees?

If there is any additional information you would like to provide the candidates and the campaigns, please do so. Thank you for your cooperation. Should you have any questions, the campaigns will be pleased to answer them.

Sincerely,

[Reprinted with permission.]

I have to think this is going to hurt the Republican Party. It makes them look like a combination of egomaniacal bullies and fearful crybabies.

Sure, to those of us outside the GOP bubble, it looks this way. But to those already deep within the echo chamber, our brave GOP nominees are standing up to the bully librul media!

What a bunch of thin-skinned crybabies.

Every candidate who signs that garbage deserves the ruthless mocking that will follow.

Absolute insanity

I really hope that if this goes out, every single news outlet (including FOX) band together and collectively laugh in the faces of these people.

Kowtowing to this type of thing would be a dangerous precedent

Seriously I remember when the Dem candidates in 2008 were mocked for refusing to do a debate on Fox. They didn’t have outrageous demands. They just didn’t want to appear on a network that would and definitely does twist words.

Moaning Joe lists all the influential and trusted TV journalists and says “liberal, every one of them.” Then fails to wonder why they were influential and trusted. Mika sighs.

Anyway, time for Big Media to give the RNC the Big Middle Finger.

Funny thing, other than the list of “will you commit to not doing these things”, it is fairly reasonable stuff… stuff that probably should have been figured out months ago. Even half the things in the “don’t do these” list are fairly reasonable (the asking for a show of hands though, for some basic questions, I think that’s entirely fair).

Go ahead. Let the GOP pull this kind of crap. For all their talk about how they want to show off their principles and that the debates haven’t let them do it, this speaks volumes. They don’t want anyone knowing what their intentions, beliefs, or rationales are for policies or laws or beliefs.

For all the talk about how they want the media to vet candidates, they want that to apply to the other party - not to the GOP. For the GOP, they are supposed to get a pass.

At the same time, I have to laugh about how they think that a debate is mean or somehow biased against them. Facts are biased against the GOP these days. Logic is biased against them. Reasoning is biased against the GOP.

And when the GOP has to sit through 10+ hours of BS hearings/questioning the way Hillary did, get back to me. None of the GOP had to endure that kind of questioning about, well, anything - despite any number of candidates who could be on the receiving end.

Take any of the governors still in the race - having to answer questions about how they’ve slashed funding for X, how their budgets have turned to swiss cheese, how they put cronies in charge of key government positions, how their tax cuts have made budget deficits worse, etc.

For Carly and Trump, hours of questioning about their business experience and failings - bankruptcies, poor business judgment, what they’ve learned, etc. For Carson, it’s questions about his involvement in Mannatech.

For the Congress members, it’s questions about their shutdown stances, resulting in additional debt to the government (Hiya Cruz), a lack of a coherent policy (Paul, Rubio, etc.), and how opposing Obamacare actually means higher costs for everyone, and that repealing it would mean stripping millions of people of their health insurance.

Etc.

Imagine for a second how the media would react to a similar list of demands coming from the Clinton campaign. Or the Sanders campaign, for that matter. By day’s end, every pundit from here to Azerbaijan would be laughing their asses off and depicting her as “Queen Hillary” for thinking she could dictate to the networks how debates should be run. They’d be speculating about how scared she is about questions into certain topics, about how afraid she is that Sanders might show her up, and how she wants to keep the media on a tight leash so she doesn’t have to look uncomfortable on stage.

And why isn’t anyone talking about the reason we have for all of this?

The questions that got these guys in such a tizzy were

1- Asking Trump how he plans to keep his impossible to keep promises
2- Asking Carson how the numbers add up on his tax plan
3- Asking Rubio about votes that he’s missed

How in the name of Dog are these biased questions that warrant this type of freaking hissy fit?

Lawrence Lessig. Constitutional law professor. Wanted to engage in campaign finance reform - a single issue candidate.

Problem for him was that he couldn’t get any traction since he was for all intents and purposes a single issue candidate who had no real platform beyond that single area.

He never rated enough to be included in the debates.

Not surprisingly, Trump isn’t the only a-hole in NYC, just the best known…

From the Gothamist: Real Estate Developers’ “Bronx Is Burning” Rave Criticized For Tone-Deafness

A star-studded Bronx rave this week hosted by real estate developers in support of two luxury towers along the South Bronx waterfront has come under criticism for being tone-deaf and insulting to local residents. Among other things, the party featured burnt-out, bullet-riddled cars and flaming trash barrels. “Trivializing legit community concerns not welcome. Neither are attempts to erase neighborhood’s culture & history,” City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito tweeted yesterday.

We in fact deal with our state and local governments a lot more in our everyday lives than the Feds. Wingnuts love to go on about how the Feds this and the Feds that but the state and local governments are what we deal with far more often and far more often the states and localities have been the tyrannical ones.

Perhaps the networks should reply to this letter with “Alright, we’ve had enough. We’ve spent years jumping through hoops, in recent years flaming hoops, to appease this campaign’s demands or that one’s complaints. Well, we’ve had enough. The candidates no longer want a debate, they want a 2 hour infomercial where they will be able to present dueling campaign speeches and the moderators will serve as little more than set decorations. If that is how the candidates wish things to be, then we’ll just end the farce that are these debates and begin charging the campaigns the rates we charge for running campaign ads. If the candidates wish to use our airtime to cover their speeches, then they can pay for the opportunity to do so. We will not waste our time dealing with petulant children any longer. If the candidates do not agree with this, then we’re being too harsh, then they’ve only themselves to blame.”

Μολὼν Λαβέ, their ass!

Has anybody ever asked any of these Μολὼν Λαβέ idiots if they know anything about Sparta? Do they think they could survive the Spartan Ἀγωγή? Even before that:

When a boy was born, he was washed with wine in the belief that this would make him strong. Every infant was then examined by members of the Gerousia (a council of leading elder Spartans) from the child’s tribe to see whether he was fit and healthy enough to be allowed to live. In the event that the baby did not pass the test, he was thrown off of a cliff at a place called the apothetae near Mt. Taygetus for several days in a test to die of exposure or survive the ordeal.

Call me when Planned Parenthood does anything like that. If any of these goobers were forced to live under the Spartan regime for one day (not as a Helot of course, but as a Spartiate—which they would be because reasons) they’d crawl over broken glass to get into North Korea, I guarantee.

Not only were they needlessly rude and antagonistic, he said, but at times they seemed woefully unprepared: At one point, moderator Becky Quick asked Donald Trump why she thought he had criticized Mark Zuckerberg on immigration after the billionaire denied it. (As Quick later noted, it was on Trump’s campaign website.)

As Vox’s Ezra Klein explained, the questions actually were substantive — especially those about the candidates’ mathematically challenged tax plans. But the questions often were interlaced with needless insults — a very legitimate question about how Donald Trump’s proposals would cause the deficit to explode, for example, called his campaign “a comic book version of a presidential campaign.”

Yes, we all know Trump is a joke, but it is not the role of a debate moderator to point that out. Just ask the damn policy questions and make them explain/defend their positions. Asking was he a comic book candidate gave much fuel to the liberal MSM meme.

The question from Becky Quick about Trump dissing Zuckerberg and Rubio, when she couldn’t cite her source was journalism malpractice.

Then there was Carl Quintanilla letting Carson off the hook about his association with quack medicine.

I’d be happy to put on a debate for the GOP with the Rank Organization gong man whacking his massive instrument [sic] when it’s time for Jeb? to shut up.

No gong, but we will have The Sandman come out on stage and sweep a candidate off

Has anybody ever asked any of these Μολὼν Λαβέ idiots if they know anything about Sparta? Do they think they could survive the Spartan Ἀγωγή? Even before that:

Call me when Planned Parenthood does anything like that. If any of these goobers were forced to live under the Spartan regime for one day (not as a Helot of course, but as a Spartiate—which they would be because reasons) they’d crawl over broken glass to get into North Korea, I guarantee.

I understand that there is also a rider to the list of demands for the debate.

1. No green M&Ms in the dressing room
2. Large bowl Haribo gummi bears (Sugar Free)
3. A rhesus monkey dressed in a cowboy outfit
4. A Sybian, with all optional accessories.

Of course, I could be mistaken, but it seems reasonable.

You know, it would be an interesting experiment to have the Dems ask for the very same concessions tomorrow to see the reaction. I bet there would be some RWNJs that would immediately bitch about it even in light of their favorite party doing exactly the same thing.

Anyone doubt it would happen?

Freeper madness update.

The current outrage is the ongoing invasion of Europe by Muslim refugees who threaten to drown Europe’s 750 million in a sea of a hundred thousand or more new arrivals. There are dozens of stories posted about it, each more hysterical and heedless of reality than the last.

It’s not all outrage though. Freepers were especially pleased with this dubiously sourced story of arson attacks against refugee centers in Sweden:
Civil war erupts in Sweden as irate Swedes burn nine Muslim refugee centers to the ground

“Were the centers full or empty of Muslims? It might lead to a good joke.”

“The politicians and the PC swedes decided to invite the most hateful, mysogynistic control freak culture into their country to prey on their fellow citizens. It’s on THEIR heads if people are so fed up they’re finally fighting back.

Let the civil war begin.”

And, finally, this comment, posted by “Lazamataz.” BTW, this person is a longstanding major freeper and not some outlier troll or liberal false flagger:

We have some serious infrastructure issues here. The water/sewage system is always leaking or failing in some form. Because, for some stupid reason in this state, they develop areas and THEN think about things like traffic and the additional load on services, roads, schools, etc. And no one wants to pay taxes to make it better. I know we’ve had a lot of rain, but we’ve had a lot more than this in the past and it really shouldn’t be a big issue in most places.

When he said yes, they went to see what it might have been. When they didn’t come right back, I went to check it out myself. What I saw, looking across the intersection near our house, was the light from head- and taillights, but about 5’ off the ground.

It took me a moment, then I realized some kids had half rolled their car, so it was sitting on its side on the sidewalk. I presume they slid trying to turn left in the intersection after failing to stop, slid till they hit the curb, and laid the car on its passenger side door handles.

So here is a terrible story about some terrible people in Dearborn, MO who are treating a sex-abuse victim as a liar even though her abuser has confessed. It is bogglingly horrible all around, but maybe my “favorite” bit:

Paden’s [the perpetrator, WHO HAS CONFESSED] great-aunt said she would “feel sorry for the girl” if she had been abused — but she doesn’t believe the victim’s claims and instead sees the case as a test of the community’s religious faith.

“Our community is one that we deeply believe in God and we’re not going to buckle under anything,” said 82-year-old Dixie Wilson. “We’re not going to let it destroy all of us. We’re going to keep doing our good works and doing what we believe and rely on each other.”

I guess I have always misunderstood the phrase “good works.”

The Donald apparently isn’t going to play nice with the GOP and is going to negotiate on his own with the networks.

Donald Trump and his advisers have decided to work directly with television executives and take a lead role in negotiating the format and content of primary debates, which have become highly watched and crucial events in the 2016 race, according to Republicans familiar with their plans.

Trump will reject a joint letter to television network hosts regarding upcoming primary debates drafted Sunday at a private gathering of operatives from at least 11 presidential campaigns, the Republicans said. Read more at Washington Post

Naturally over on FreeRepugnent they are having multiple Trumpgasims. That whole site is going to need to be placed on suicide watch by the end of this nominating process.

He really is doing everything possible to alienate every other campaign. His team was integral in the process that produced that letter, and now that they’ve suckered the other campaigns in his team is publicly leaving them dangling out on a limb. If he does get the nomination he’s going to look back at a landscape of scorched earth and burnt bridges, wondering why it’s so hard to get support from the very people he repeatedly backstabbed to get there.

Even if gay men were predominately effected, it would still be a horible statement. No one deserves a disease like that. Not even an evil fundie fuckwit like Swanson.

Very true.

My point was that he’s proposing a god with who kills over a million people a year, who mostly AREN’T gay, just to kill a small number of gays. A god who either hates gays so much that killing that many straights a year is acceptable collateral damage, or who is so appallingly bad at his job that he can’t hit the barn from the inside.

So, the god he proposes is even more awful than he’s suggesting.

It’s a perfect time for Trump to go rogue. He’s getting the same numbers as Carson and may be heading a bit lower. Why not take an issue like this debate mess and turn it into a power move hiss fit? It gives him something to blame when he takes a full dump on the party and goes independent or just goes off on the Grand Olds.

When I started working at Genentech, it was January. I worked in a windowless warehouse converted into lab and office space, so I rarely saw the outside till I left work. The first week of Daylight Savings Time, leaving at my usual 6:30-7PM, coming out into the sunlight I felt SO GUILTY, like I was skipping out early!

I still get echoes of that every year when the Spring time change happens.

O/T

So my spouse has a bizarre physics problem where you ave to determine the kinetic energy of a continent.

really?

So I took the North American Plate with an area of about 75, 900,000 sq kilometers which about half are continental crust and half oceanic. The average thickness of the North American continental area is 36.5 kilometers, and the average thickness of the oceanic crust is about 7 kilometers. Density of continental crust is 2.7 g/cc and for oceanic crust is 3.0 g/cc. There are 1E15 cc per cubic kilometer.

Anyways, we seem to have about 265,650,000 km3 of oceanic crust and a whopping 13,851,750,000 km3 of continental crust for the NA plate. Multiply both figures by their respective densities of 3.0E15 and 2.7E15 and then add together and divide by 1000 (to convert to kilograms) to get a grand total mass of 3.81966E21 Kg.

Average relative motion of the NA Plate is about .05 meters per year.

So we have 1/2 MV^2 (velocity is meters per second or .05 meters per 31,556,926 seconds) giving us 1/2 (3.82 E21 kg) (1.58E-9)^2 for a total of 4781 joules at any given moment.

Did I screw this up?

Too many moving parts today to pull off a rigged election. Not the least of which is exit polling by multiple parties, and rather close scrutiny. Kragar  Nov 2, 2015 • 3:22:43pm

Witnesses watched in horror as Harpham picked his victims off. One of them, the bicyclist, pleaded for his life before being killed.

“I heard the (young man) say, ‘Don’t shoot me! Don’t shoot me!’ ” Naomi Bettis, a neighbor who witnessed the killing, said Monday.

Bettis said she recognized the gunman as her neighbor — whom she didn’t know by name — and that before the initial slaying she saw him roaming outside with a rifle. She called 911 to report the man, but a dispatcher explained that Colorado has an open carry law that allows public handling of firearms.

And that bit about Rolling Rock. I remember back in the 70s Rolling Rock was treated as something special by many an Ohio college age student. Never understood why. I always thought it tasted weird, like some citrus acid to it.

Back when I was a touring musician, my manager’s FiL was a brewmaster at Rolling Rock. Whenever we got within 100 miles of the brewery, he’d send out two fresh cases for the band and crew.

That Rolling Rock was night and day different from the stuff we’d get from the distributor in Philly.

My Aussie friend told me Fosters is the Budweiser of Australia. It’s funny when the local crap beer is shipped somewhere new and sold as a premium product, like Coors in the East in the 1970s.

I remember hearing that somebody in California was going to ‘import’ Rolling Rock as a premium beer, and about died laughing. Rolling Rock was what you bought when you couldn’t afford Genesee, and weren’t desperate enough to buy Iron City!

Rolling Rock is sold as ‘premium’ in Alabama. (I’d much rather have Iron City or Duquesne.)

Since I switched to AppleTv and they now have the CBS streaming option, I’m debating whether to spring for it. I already pay for Netflix, Hulu, Showtime, HBO, and WWE. I don’t really watch anything on CBS (at least not that I can’t get next day on Hulu) other than sports, but apparently it won’t include the Sunday version of football. Not sure it makes sense - also, for what it’s worth, ABC’s app allows you to watch live TV without paying while NBC’s new app doesn’t have a live feed (yet). Kind of interesting to watch how these are all developing.

With tactics like this I’d hate to see what requirements an incoming GOP President would place on their Inauguration Ceremony or first SotU speech.

After each paragraph of the speech there will be thunderous applause. If such is not forthcoming ten people watching will be dragged in front of the cameras and shot.

This will continue until those bastards in Washington understand who is in charge.
