Acoustic Guitar Excellence: Spencer Elliott, “First Flight”

Music • Views: 50,514

YouTube

I have to admit I sometimes get a little tired of the two-handed acoustic guitarists who use open tunings and slap the strings rhythmically on two and four while Travis-picking, but Spencer Elliott is breaking that mold with a vengeance. This is a beautiful piece produced by fellow acoustic guitar maestro Antoine Dufour, with no sign of the aforementioned clichés.

I finally got a guitar lesson today. I’ve owned one for many years but could never get the strings to ring cleanly. Anyway the instructor started to ask me what song I wanted to say and I immediately interrupted with “Dogs”.
I think I saw his O face.
My first task is to force (heh) my hands to relax. Very optimistic that I’ll learn to make music.

Well, I’m off to bed. The bosses are down in Orlando at the big annual diving trade show. I’m catching up on inventories, doing some maintenance on gear, looking at some of our systems (if you can call them that) and seeing how we can make things smoother, easier and simpler to track gear.

It fits my personality well. :)

Fox Lake Lieutenant Joseph Gliniewicz’s death in September sparked a manhunt stemming from his request for backup as he pursued three “suspicious men” in the small community near the border between Illinois and Wisconsin.

The 52-year-old officer was found on Sept. 1 with fatal gunshot wounds in a remote area of the community. No arrests have been made in connection with his death, and investigators have already stated that Gliniewicz was shot twice with his own gun.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office refused to comment on the reports on Tuesday, saying that the cause of the 30-year veteran’s death would be revealed during a press conference on Wednesday morning.

Could also have been that another department took over the investigation at some point because of the involvement in the initial search.

Sorry I haven’t commented much on the Gliniewicz matter. I got a note from the post office saying they had a certified letter for me and I can’t read the sender’s name. So I spent the last hour worrying about if I was getting sued, even though I can’t think of who would want to sue me. I’ve settled down now, since I can’t find out till the post office opens in the morning.

Fun fact. The desks are far apart to discourage cheating. The exams are tough, and require almost total recall of the study materials.

One of my Chinese friends got her nursing license in Changsha, but meanwhile got married to a Canadian and moved to Ontario. Passing the Canadian license exam was comparatively easy.

Cheating on exams is a major Chinese avocation and a major problem for professional exam givers. Kids sitting the college entrance exam have been caught with tiny radios concealed in their eyeglass frames, and answers for some of the national exams taken at university are commonly offered for sale online.

TONIGHT -Strong aurora expected across Alaska, Canada, parts of Lower 48

Megan Edge
Alaska Dispatch News
November 3, 2015

Northern Lights Healy AK

The northern lights are expected to dance across Alaska and the rest of the U.S. Tuesday night, according to the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ Geophysical Institute.

“Weather permitting, highly active auroral displays will be visible overhead from Inuvik, Yellowknife, Rankin and Iqaluit to Vancouver, Helena, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Bay City, Toronto, Montpelier and Charlottetown, and visible low on the horizon from Salem, Boise, Cheyenne, Lincoln, Indianapolis and Annapolis,” the Geophysical Institute wrote.

The aurora intensity is rated on a scale of 0 to 9. On Monday, initial reports of the forecast were rated at a seven, but by Tuesday the intensity level had been downgraded to a six, which is still high — even for Alaska.

The trouble is that the Right has managed to commandeer the media and the public stage to appeal to a specific group of people, who fear change and The Other. Those people are willing to go out and vote, because of that fear.

There is no similar effort coming from the Left, who are probably less comfortable with sheer propaganda as a means of instilling fear. The Left, dog help us, hope to win by appealing to voters’ minds and common sense. Plus, the Dems seem reluctant to call out the BS coming from the Religious Right, because talking about religion can be counter-productive, if not self-destructive.

The Dems in KY took the even more damaging tactic of minimizing their connections to Obama, without whom Kynect would not even exist. They could have made it plain as day that 400,000 people in the Commonwealth have health coverage now because of Obama, a Democrat. Meanwhile, it has been the GOP in Congress that has repeatedly tried to kill the ACA. For Conway to win, he needed the votes from the urban areas and university towns, and it seems those people just stayed home, letting Bevins, et alia, win.

The Democrats need to get more aggressive and dog-eat-dog political. Maybe reading some books about LBJ and the city machines run by Democrats would help.

LBJ had many faults, but he knew how to play hardball politics. And you are right, the Dems need to deal with practical matters, day to day life: health coverage, job availability, the minimum wage, education funding. All those are in the GOP cross-hairs. The only people who should vote GOP are the fat cats pulling their strings. Anyone middle-income or lower would be shooting themselves in their foot (feet?) if they vote for a Republican candidate, even if they agree with the candidate on social issues.

I know our resident Republicans will disagree with me, but I don’t see the current Republican Party, as it exists today, as being the friend of anyone making less than $1M a year, or even $100K per year.

There was a time in the later 1990s when I was regularly receiving certified mail from a lawyer in Los Angeles who represented (may still represent) Scientology. After a while, I just stopped going to the P.O. to pick them up. Never got sued, but I’m pretty sure she was mad at me for flying out to Salt Lake City for a deposition I had no intention of attending. (The service was invalid, as cheapo Scientology failed to pay the third-party witness fee. Plus she wanted my hard drive. Not.a.chance. And nothing came of that, either. I was lucky.)

Very interesting story out of Boston. Worth the read if you have a few minutes:

Judge Rebukes Brigham for Placing Morcellation Critic Under Guard While His Wife Was in Surgery

A Boston judge ruled Nov. 3 that Brigham & Women’s Hospital had violated the First Amendment rights of a couple who led an aggressive national campaign to stop power morcellation, a surgical procedure routinely used by gynecologists.

Earlier this week, Brigham provided care to Amy Reed, who needed urgent surgery for a cancer recurrence. However, her husband, Hooman Noorchashm, had to submit to being searched and accompanied by a security guard.

Both Reed and Noorchashm are physicians. She is an anesthesiologist who was formerly employed at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and he is a cardiothoracic surgeon who had practiced at Brigham.

The decision to subject the couple to enhanced security procedures was made by Ron Walls, executive vice president and chief operating officer at Brigham. Hospital officials declined to discuss the matter with The Cancer Letter.

On Monday, after Reed and Noorchashm were searched at the entrance to Brigham, and Noorchashm was put under surveillance, their attorney went to court seeking a restraining order against Brigham for engaging in “retaliatory action” that was brought on by the couple’s public criticism of Brigham leadership in the controversy over power morcellation.

72
Doofus  Nov 4, 2015 • 5:26:59am

All politics are local, including Kentucky.

Of course, Bevin was also on the receiving end of incessant negative advertising by Democrat Jack Conway and groups backing him. To Bevin’s credit, his own campaign’s ads did not descend into the gutter, even as he regularly called Conway a liar on the trail.

Bevin was the clear winner in debates against Conway, who will long be remembered for heavy sweating, nervous laughter, and bad jokes. Not only did Bevin, an undeniably good talker, beat Conway, but he bested much of the state’s media, too.

Not much information on Jenean Hampton

McConnell helped Bevin’s campaign in many ways. The consummate political pro did so despite amateurish mistakes by Bevin, such as when his running mate, Jenean Hampton, insultingly declined to comment on whether McConnell should resign as Senate majority leader.

Not entirely. Many seem entirely willing to live as though Texas exists in its own time bubble of 1836-1846. They seem to neglect that the reason they joined the US was because they had massive debts that the US paid off.

Ironically, the right wing using “Obamacare” as a pejorative nickname for the ACA will keep Obama’s name in the public eye for many years to come. I suppose they were trying to create a new “Hoover-ville,” but the ACA is working well enough that the name will become a fond remembrance of a former president.

Quite the opposite effect from what they wanted.

Or working women, single mothers, gays, minorities, college students, teachers, heath care workers, etc…

In the latest poll, conducted after last week’s third GOP debate in which Bush delivered a mediocre performance, just 4 percent of Republican and independent Republican-leaning voters said they would support Bush in their state’s primary. In the September survey, Bush earned 10 percent, trailing Trump, Carson and Carly Fiorina. And in terms of favorability, no one polled lower than Bush, at a net-negative of 33 points. Just 25 percent of all registered voters surveyed said they had a positive opinion of him, while 58 percent said they had a negative one.

There are a small number of feminist professors, all female, who have said stupid things over the years about right-of-center women not really being women. Ben Shapiro is inflating what is now a fringe tactic to the mainstream of the left.

Now, someone really did fling that woman-in-name-only malarkey at Sarah Palin recently, but it hasn’t been repeated as a slur in the lefty blogosphere (it’s been reported there, but reporting isn’t repeating). So this is just Benji conflating and smearing. Or as we know it at LGF, “Wednesday”.

An elementary nervous system, or nerve net, allows jellyfish to smell, detect light, and respond to other stimuli. The simple digestive cavity of a jellyfish acts as both its stomach and intestine, with one opening for both the mouth and the anus. […]

It is also why they have to promote the any and all stories, no matter how spurious or far-fetched, that support the narrative that Obama is some sort of tyrannical usurper.

Leon Wolf, a diarist for the conservative RedState blog, wonders whether Mr Carson’s apparent lack of command of the issues reflects poorly on his commitment to the campaign

“I am distressed that he has spent apparently no time in study educating himself on the basic issues he would face during the course of the run for his presidency,” he writes. “I am 100% confident Carson could understand them very easily, which is precisely the reason I’m so bothered that he doesn’t. It goes to the seriousness with which he takes the job of running for president, and his personal work ethic at that job.”

re: #164 Wendell Zurkowitz (slave to the waffle light)

Wolf seems to misunderstand the point of the campaign for Carson, Fiorina, and Trump. It’s to ultimately enhance their marketability on the talk show/speaking engagement circle, not because they have a chance at winning a general election (since none has held any elective office). That Carson or Trump is leading in polls is a sign of the weakness with all the GOP candidates - that they’ll take anyone over any of the entrenched/establishment/GOP extremist candidates because they’re seen as outsiders, but scratch the surface and you see just how awful every last one of them is.

That’s why they’ve got problems going into next year.

The problem is that the Democrats have a different set of problems - trying to rebuild a ground game and win back local and state races against extremist candidates who have won in the past because of Obamacare opposition and who are motivated to push ever more extreme candidates in their gerrymandered districts.

I really don’t get his deal. When hetero guys stand next to each other at the urinal, we generally don’t peer over the divider to check the other guy’s junk. I’m not sure even gays do it. And besides, since there are no urinals in a ladies’ restroom, how are the girls going to see the boy’s junk, unless they peek over the walls?

I don’t think the guy in question is going to wave it around for the girls to see, since he/she is identifying as a girl.

Ben must watch some interesting movies in his spare time.

Actually, I was once in a ladies’ room that did have urinals. It required a quick check back to the label on the door. Yup. Ladies’ room.
IIRC it was in the engineering building at U. of Louisiana in the late ’70s and it had apparently never occurred to the designers that there would ever be a need for a women’s restroom in the engineering building, so one of the men’s restrooms had a quick but incomplete sex change. Presumably the transition was completed eventually.

Ha, reminds me of my first day at a major hospital in Pittsburgh. I went to the correct floor and decided I would hit the bathroom before reporting and being shown around. I knew I looked at the plate by the door before going in, but then the door shut and there was a female supply coin operated machine behind the door and no urinals. I did a quick 2 second panic, turned around and went back out to check the sign. Sure enough it said “Men” beside the door. So I took care of business and went on my way. I brought it up to one of the guys when I got settles in and he told me it used to be female but had changed a year before to men’s. He laughed that I freaked out for a second when I first entered.

We have different taxes for different things. One of the things we voted on yesterday was an increase in the homestead exemption. This lowered our property taxes.

Then we voted on an amendment that would shift some money to road building:

Beginning in 2018, the department will get an additional $2.5 billion a year in general sales tax revenue once that statewide account receives $28 billion. Starting in 2020, it will get 35 percent of motor vehicle sales tax revenue that exceeds $5 billion. There are expiration dates for both components, but the Legislature can vote to extend each.

It is a story out of the “Arabian Nights” so it takes place in a Medieval-period, Islamic country like Persia.

The “far future” would explain how the Genie knows all about 1990’s pop culture, but he would also know that if he’s a time-traveling Genie.

I meant that as rather tongue-in-cheek, but after doing some Googling, it seems that the tale of Aladdin is rather multifaceted in terms of culture.

Who knew the original Aladdin was Chinese?!

One of the biggest buildings on the UC campus is laid out like a square, with men’s and women’s rooms on two corners on each floor. They alternate, so that the women’s room on floor one is a men’s room on floor to, and so on. This no doubt explains why, one day when I was in the front (sink) area washing my hands and chatting with a co-worker, we were interrupted by a scarlet streak zipping from the toilet area to the door, and saying “sorry, sorry, sorry,” in a baritone voice.

The campus engineering building also didn’t contemplate the need for women’s restrooms (except the one on the top floor for the Engineering department staff, and a on-stall job next to the entrance for visitors, and they had to give one of the men’s rooms a sex change too.

Several years ago, I remember seeing a segment on the D.C. local news were Congresswomen and female staffers were annoyed there weren’t enough female restrooms in the Congressional buildings (both office buildings and the Capitol) because of when they were built/last remodeled, they never planned on having that many female staffers (above secretaries, at least) or Congresswomen.

Didn’t anyone think this might be a problem?” Then we eventually realised it was pretty much the same reason as you described above: the building was originally built with only male students in mind, including the toilets, and the only way to make it work otherwise was to refit toilets on alternate floors.

There’s a clock?!

Yeah, it only goes up to 72 hours, never been a reason to upgrade it.

He is outraged by it.

Not sure at what or why, but OUTRAGE and OBAMA and IRAN all go so nicely together…

But doesn’t Dim Jim also hate Ob—-

Oh wait, it’s Dim Jim, sorry. The outrage doesn’t need to make sense.

Suspect may have been involved in a domestic disturbance complaint who then shot at a police dog.

A San Diego police SWAT team was sent Wednesday to an apartment complex in the Bankers Hill neighborhood, where a domestic violence suspect was believed to be holed up.

Officers were initially sent to the building on Brant Street near Kalmia Street after a domestic violence incident was reported around 9:15 a.m., according to San Diego police. Emergency radio reports indicated the suspect may have fired a gun at a police dog.

So Dim Jim is trying to argue that there are people who wish Obama bad in Iran? Shouldn’t by that same logic mean Obama should refuse to deal with the GOP since the also wish him bad? DimJim needs to find out his narrative and stick with it. I’m sure a lot of Soviets hated Reagan but that didn’t stop Reagan from doing a deal with them either.

I fell for a set up like that in a Sacramento bar back in the day. The bartender was very good at reading the body language of first timers, upon their return from their first trip, to determine who bit.

In Pittsburgh, Jerome Bettis has a restaurant. In the men’s room at the urinals, the top half of the wall is a two-way mirror. While you are standing there peeing in the urinal you are looking at all the people in the restaurant eating and paying at the cash register.
