Ben Carson Now Says His “Scholarship Offer” Was Actually “Informal”

But that’s not how he described it previously
Politics • Views: 54,992

The New York Times asked Ben Carson about his West Point controversy today, and Carson told them he never actually applied for admission but had received an “informal” offer of an appointment to the school.

In an interview with The New York Times on Friday, Mr. Carson said: “I don’t remember all the specific details. Because I had done so extraordinarily well you know I was told that someone like me – they could get a scholarship to West Point. But I made it clear I was going to pursue a career in medicine.”

“It was, you know, an informal ‘with a record like yours we could easily get you a scholarship to West Point.’”

The problem for Carson, though, is that he has repeatedly stated, very specifically, that he had received a “scholarship offer” directly from West Point.

In his recent book, “You Have a Brain,” Mr. Carson described how he decided which college to attend: “I still had the scholarship offer from West Point as a result of my R.O.T.C. achievements.”

More recently, in a Facebook post in August responding to a question, he wrote that he had been “thrilled to get an offer from West Point.”

It’s pretty clear that Carson chose to frame this as “an offer from West Point” because it aided in his myth-building story of personal redemption and triumph.

UPDATE at 11/6/15 12:52:46 pm by Charles Johnson

Here’s video of Carson on the October 9, 2015 Charlie Rose show, stating unequivocally: “I was offered a full scholarship to West Point.”

I dunno. If it were lying about a non-service academy, I could see that but I think this could hurt him pretty bad but then again this cycle has well been quite weird.

To wit:

It was, you know, an informal ‘with a record like yours we could easily get you a scholarship to West Point.’

This is not how this works. West Point is not the sole deciding factor. Go talk to your congressman.

If you think West Point is going to do that for you, uh, I think they’re kind of looking for a little bit of self-starting leadership potential. Since their job is to make leaders, and stuff.

If Carson’s completely ignorant understanding of how the US government functions, how the economy works, and what the president’s role in both isn’t enough to disqualify him from running for the WH, why would anyone think that lying about his background would be any different?

As I stated earlier - this will probably result in a bump in the polls.

In any rational political party, Carson wouldn’t have risen to these levels in the first place because he simply isn’t qualified to be anywhere near the WH except as a guest (and even then I’d be careful). Carson’s policies/claims/statements are those of an extremist who simply doesn’t understand how the world outside neurosurgery functions.

He’s a single-issue expert with tunnel vision so that he can maintain that expertise. On everything else? He’s unable to get out of his own way with inadequate responses, factually challenged, logic starved, and engaging in all manner of weird thinking.

You need a medical clearance, you need to meet decently rigorous physical fitness standards, you need to beat out the other applicants from your state for your member of government’s endorsement. It’s intensely, outlandishly selective in a whole bunch of ways, some of which simply are not in the Army’s direct control.

And let me reiterate THEY ARE NOT GOING TO HOLD YOUR FUCKING HAND AND DO IT FOR YOU.

I don’t remember where I saw it, it might have been here, but this is my answer to those who contend that our election process is too long. It’s pretty clear that his ego is healthy enough for seven or eight (hundred) people, to embellish something like that from an informal discussion to a formal offer.

Which, I can easily believe that someone made an offhand comment about how Ben was the kind of high achieving student who should apply and pointed out to him that it was a free-ride, especially if they knew he came from a background of limited funds. And I can absolutely believe Ben’s ego embellished that into what would have been a guaranteed acceptance if he’d bothered to go through the process.

And sadly, I can see Republican voters excusing that.

West Point, Annapolis, and the Air Force Academy DO NOT OFFER SCHOLARSHIPS.

It’s already happening:

Carson’s story, as quoted in Cheney’s piece, is that Westmoreland “opened doors” and offered him a “full scholarship” to West Point, and that he considered the offer but ultimately “did not seek admission.” Has Politico somehow verified whether Westmoreland, who is now deceased, made the offer?

Carson spokesman Ben Watts attacked the story, telling The Daily Caller News Foundation, “The Politico story is an outright lie. Dr. Carson as the leading ROTC student in Detroit was told by his commanders that he could get an appointment to the academy. He never said he was admitted or even applied.”

This really is an excellent chance to break things in Rubio’s direction, if you’re actually interested in protecting and defending the establishment. Try to egg Trump and Carson into mutually annihilating over increasingly outlandish and bombastic statements. You’d better believe I’d be sending those marching orders down the food chain if I were Ailes.

However, I suspect they’ll act like a bunch of fainting ninnies. It’s hard to pull the wool juuuuust the right amount up on your viewers’ eyes. Way too easy to overshoot.

Notice that the Baggers are attacking on a completely different nuanced topic than this part:

Ben Carson has repeatedly claimed he was offered a full scholarship from West Point. He conveys the story in at least two other books, “You Have a Brain” and “Take the Risk.” Carson repeated his West Point claim as recently as Aug. 13, when he fielded questions from supporters on Facebook.

And in October, Carson shared the story with Charlie Rose: “I had a goal of achieving the office of city executive officer [in JROTC]. Well, no one had ever done that in that amount of time … Long story short, it worked, I did it. I was offered full scholarship to West Point, got to meet General Westmoreland, go to Congressional Medal dinners, but decided really my pathway would be medicine.”

He thinks Carson is going to drop soon, and that most of his supporters will go over to Trump. I’m not that sure on that one.

We finished up the conversation with “I can’t wait to see how they (GOP) tries to walk all this back come the general election.”

Assuming Carson’s support mainly comes from the Christianist wing of the GOP, I’d say they’d most likely drift to Huckabee, Santorum, or maybe Cruz (if he dials up the Christianist talking points). As someone here has pointed out a few times, Trump is who he is because of booze and gambling and womanizing - that’s never going to sit well with the Christianists.

I also am moving into the group that thinks that Rubio will be the establishment choice by the time we get to the winner take all states.

Not only that, but you’re usually vetted by your local Congressman - and that’s after he compares you against other qualified candidates in his/her district.

Right.

I can’t say I’m particularly surprised by this. At least within certain segments of Christianity there’s the “God will provide” attitude, and then there’s the “the Lord helps those who help themselves”… and I’ve seen more than a few “good Christians” who rather than having sympathy or empathy for the less fortunate look at them with disgust - like the less fortunate are the ones taking advantage of the system.

re: #159 ObserverArt

Barry Bennett, Carson’s campaign manager, was just on Chuck Todd and he claims they will release info this weekend that will make Politico look stupid for this report.

He was saying Carson had all the test numbers and ROTC grading to get into The Academy and his ROTC advisers were more than willing to help him get the recommendation to apply for admission. Carson simply decided not to go. Therefore his only “lie” was he used the word “full scholarship” which is wrong, but everyone knows it is no cost if you are accepted.

So…on we go…

He posted on Facebook just a few days ago that he “was thrilled to get an offer from West Point.”

No matter how he tries to spin it, that was a flat out lie. He never got “an offer from West Point.”

179
mr.fusion  Nov 6, 2015 • 2:35:50pm

re: #164 HappyWarrior

Release on the weekend means to me we got nothing and we’re hoping this goes away fast.

Here’s the test

Did the lie make him look better? Does “I had a full scholarship to West Point but decided to turn it down” make Carson sound better than “I had the grades to get in and would have gotten in had I just applied?”

The answer is unequivocally yes

Army Junior and Senior ROTC Programs and Honor ROTC Units of Other Services
Applicants currently enrolled in an Army Junior or Senior Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program or an ROTC program from another branch of service that has been designated as an Honor Unit with Distinction are eligible for a nomination in this category. A request for a ROTC Nomination should be made through your Professor of Military Science or Senior Instructor who must fill out and submit a Request for ROTC Nomination (Form 5-497) to the Director of Admissions, U.S. Military Academy.

Would this have applied to Ben Carson?

So…um….I made it through the USMA selection process myself. The congressional vetting was literally the least rigorous part of the whole ordeal. You see, it really depends on who else from that district is applying. Having done a three years of JROTC, and being the grandson of a Vet, I had a five minute conversation, filled out an application, and that was done.

I got invited to visit the campus and stayed in the barracks and toured and everything. There were maybe six of us on the visit, at the end of the visit everyone but me was handed an acceptance letter. I, alas, was only going to be 16 at the end of my senior year of HS, and you have to be old enough to actually join the Army for them to accept you. I went home, graduated, went to a community college for a year…and as I was getting ready to head to the recruiter’s office to enlist, I received an acceptance letter of my own. I had not actually applied again, and it never occurred to me that I would not have to. I had a slightly higher than average SAT score, a slightly lower than average GPA, and it was an entirely unremarkable process outside of one pseudo PT test.

In addition, at our final JROTC ball, I received a Naval ROTC scholarship to Florida A&M. I had not applied to this school, or for the scholarship, and had no interest in Florida, but there it was.

So while yes, Ben greatly exaggerated/fabricated/lied about his application to West Point…a lot of what it takes to get entry into is literally just having a graduate know your name. And a quick look at Westmoreland’s bio makes him a grad AND a former first captain, AND a general. That would have been pretty much guaranteed.

Well, I can easily believe it could be an “offer” to nominate him through a ROTC nomination and every one knows that one gets a “full scholarship” when attending a Military Academy.

No. He was Chief of Staff of the Army. He had a lot of pull, thus, but was not part of the process.

Carson’s manager said there was an ROTC luncheon in Detroit which is where he met with Westmoreland and that is where the ROTC people told Westmoreland Carson was a great Academy candidate.

He also said some of the reporting had the date of the luncheon wrong, but the Detroit Free Press has the images of Carson with Westmoreland.

Having tried the West Point route myself I can say that his claims are mostly meaningless. They will tell you to try and they will suggest that appointments are easy to get, but they are not. They can be very political and based on favors or the whims of the Secretary of Defense, who might have been engaged in affirmative action at the time or not. I had a fair shot at one but I was a pathologicaly shy child and I froze up in the interview. Doesn’t mean I would have gotten it anyway, but trying was important.
Carson didn’t even try, so him saying he got offered a scholarship to West Point is like any smart kid saying he got offered a scholarship to MIT because someone said he could probably get in…If he applied.

A little boy comes down to breakfast. Since they live on a farm, his mother asks him if he has done his chores. “Not yet.” says the little boy. Mother tells him he can’t have breakfast until the chores are done.
Well the boy is a little pissed as he gets up to do the chores.
When he goes back to the table all there is is a bowl of dry cereal.
“Why do I just have a bowl of cereal?” asks the boy.
“Well,” his mother says, “I saw you kick a chicken so you don’t get any eggs, I saw you kick a pig so you don’t get any bacon, and I saw you kick a cow so you don’t get any milk either”. Just then his father comes into the kitchen, and he kicks the cat as he passes.

Powerful ad and I am glad that I checked to make sure that he is no relation to Edwin Edwards. Maybe there is hope for LA?

West side of Wolf Creek Pass. The top of the pass received over two and a half feet of snow out of this last storm cycle.

All over partisan right wing outlets there is a frenzy of excuse making for Carson.

It’s kind of humorous to watch.

More sad than humorous though.

People want to be lied to, if the lies make them feel good about themselves. That what Carson and his ilk do. When a little bit of truth imposes into the fairyland of make-believe the believers can get quite angry.

His attempt to shuffle attention off to an 8 year old Obama campaign is pretty silly. Only his true believers will buy it. To the rest of us he looks a little bit like Richard Nixon.

Carson felt real good when he insulted the president and Obamacare at that National Prayer Breakfast. He became an instant right-wing celebrity. He can’t compare himself to Barack Obama because he’s not qualified to even speak his name, imo. When he insulted Obamacare and the president at the NPB, the president did not follow up by whining and complaining like a stuck pig. He remained gracious and acted like an adult, something Carson is incapable of doing. Carson loves going on the attack, but he can’t deal with being attacked, not even with his own words. If he were ever POTUS, we could expect a daily news presser in which he would whine, cry, and complain about everything he doesn’t like. The man is a certified WATB. Someone needs to send him a bag of pacifiers.

Ben Carson is the hope of those whose worldviews are out of date, made flesh.

If Ben goes down in flames his supporters will be at a loss.

I suspect that is why Jeb! appears to be coming to the defense of Ben. I suspect Jeb! is hoping that he can still attract some of the lost when he somehow fixes his campaign.

The coming debate ought to be quite the show. Christie pushed to the undercard. Ben pretending he’s still the upright guy his fans hope. Trump sensing blood in the water… will he pounce? Cruz presenting himself as the True Je$u$ Candidate to replace Ben.

[trump] Thinking that you’ve been accepted to West Point when you really haven’t may be one of those 7th Day Adventist things, I DON’T KNOW, that’s a really strange religion and I don’t know of all the crazy things that they believe in. I’m just asking questions. [/trump]

There are two schools I know of: Barnett’s Bicycle Institute and United Bicycle Institute. Both are good, but Barnett’s has the advantage for possible future employers; they’ll say how well you did, not just whether you finished or not. Barnett’s also produces handbooks that are valuable references (so does Sutherland’s, but they don’t have a school). Barnett’s is in Colorado Springs, UBI is in Ashland, OR, so you can’t go wrong for locale.

Apprenticeship is probably still dominant for how folks learn. The schools are a quick way to shorten experience requirements. If you find a shop that will teach you, and you like them, do it. I learned at a shop in Portland, OR, that hired me after the tour that I learned mechanics for. If you can sell bikes and accessories and SELL service as well as perform service on bicycles, you’d be a valuable asset for any shop.
