Saw her on the Jool’s Holland show. She’s got a nice classic groove going, and it’s great to see her play instruments too. I think she did one song on bass and one on guitar on Holland and giving it her all singing.

I’m not sure, but is there some kind of a traditional R&B rebirth happening? There seems to be more and more R&B acts. Not a bad thing at all!

I like this one. I’m not entirely sure, but I think it’s built on a bite from Sly’s ‘Hot Fun in the Summertime.’

re: #8 GlutenFreeJesus

You just need Jay Cutler to be Cam Newton. Which doesn’t seem like a huge ask.

On a nonsarcastic note in the NFC north, if the Lions continue to suck out loud, I wonder if the next GM would consider trading Stafford and Johnson. I’m guessing a couple of teams would trade (at least) a first rounder for one of those guys. If you could have three first round picks this year (including possibly the first overall), you have to take them, right?

A tribute to an unlikely veteran of WWII was unveiled in Edinburgh a few days ago to commemorate the Polish soldiers who fought against the Nazis.

Wojtek the bear was rescued as a cub by Polish troops in the Middle East and enlisted as a soldier so they could take him with them when they were deployed to Italy and Monte Cassino. He drank beer and was trained to carry heavy mortar rounds. He eventually came to Edinburgh Zoo to live hence the statue’s placement in the Castle gardens alongside several other war memorials.

Yep, been going on for awhile. Janelle Monae is getting big now. Mark Ronson is a big player. He recently had a huge hit with Uptown Funk with Bruno Mars singing - total homage to The Time. Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings are doing really well. It never actually went away with the neo soul movement and so on. Check out some Sharon Jones.

So, The Husband is watching NASCAR today (ack) and to open the race they had the actor John Kasinski (from the American version of The Office) and 3 other guys (the real life heroes of…)to promote his new movie, 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. Which from what I’m able to gather (I can’t watch the video trailer for some reason) is about how 6 brave guys had to figure out what to do on their own when the State Department and the CIA abandoned them. It’s due for release in January. It’s based on a book of the same name by Mitchell Zuckoff. The movie is being directed by Michael Bay. Do we need this? Really?

So, I just had a random thought pop into my head. One of the more republican members of the Cuban side of my family posted something from Rubio about how there’s only one year left of Obama. I’m wondering how Cubans will react if/when the race based attacks against Rubio start coming from the far right. There’s still plenty of folks in South Florida who remember the “No Cubans” signs from the 1950s/1960s

Me too! Pick up a copy of The Complete Doris Day with Les Brown if you want to hear some great stuff. It’s on Collectors Choice and out of print as CC is out of business, but used copies are reasonable on Amazon. Been checking out some Helen Forrest recently, not too many people know of her these days, but she was considered one of the best back in her time. I recently discovered that Reader’s Digest has some great big band releases. I have a copy of Big Bands Live on the way from Ebay. You can read about the amount of work they put into this release over seven years at the link below - amazing!

From the various photos I’ve seen and the fact that it’s new construction, it appears to be related to a failure of a drainage ditch/culvert/water runoff under the parking lot.

It’s real. There appears to be an IMDB page for it and I’m guessing NASCAR wouldn’t have these guys calling the beginning of the race if it weren’t. It’s kind of telling that they’d do promotion at a NASCAR race (no, The Husband isn’t a wingnut, but honestly, that’s about all he hangs out with. I think I’m the only thing saving him from that fate. Barely). That’s your target audience right there.

That’s what it looks like to me as well. Poorly designed drainage or culvert and water running underneath the parking lot undermined it heavily before it collapsed. Probably took out the power conduit at the same time, thus the blackout.

Take a look at Swanson’s rant at the link and consider the kind of maniacs that support Ted Cruz.

Republican presidential candidates Ted Cruz, Mike Huckabee and Bobby Jindal all spoke this weekend at the National Religious Liberties Conference in Iowa, an event hosted by Kevin Swanson, a Colorado-based pastor and activist who frequently informs his followers that the biblical penalty for homosexuality is death and defended a proposed law in Uganda that would have imposed life imprisonment or capital punishment for homosexuality.

This is the second season of the Formula E series, apparently. Last year, all the teams were supplied with standardized cars, but this year most teams are designing their own engines. The cars average about 80 decibels, compared to a standard F1 car’s 130.

From the comments:

Joe Lippard: You said in your autobiography that this happened the year after your sophomore year so this would be your junior year. You graduated Yale in 1973, which means that your junior year would have not been 1970 like you claim here. You also claimed that 150 students showed up to take this test, while this article claims only “several”. Not only that, but WLH 203 is a small classroom in W. L. Harkness Hall that seats 28; it’s not some auditorium like you claim. Not to mention, this article specifically says that the class whose tests were “lost” was Psychology 10, not Perceptions 301 like you claimed.

Nyet  Nov 8, 2015 • 2:31:42pm

When it comes to memory, I always cut people a lot of slack, probably more than an average person would. I’ve read too many historical testimonies that are chockfull of inaccurate details and contradictions that are nevertheless considered valuable. In fact most substantial historical testimonies I have read either contained serious mistakes or contradicted other no less substantial testimonies on details.

I guess I won’t cut Carson much slack though. First of all, he’s a self-promoter. I mean, who calls their memoir “Gifted hands”? Humbleness is not something he’s acquainted with. Second, Carson does openly lie when it suits him. E.g. he claimed that a physicist couldn’t answer his 2nd law of thermo canard and that “they never have answers” to these questions - a bold lie. So while I might otherwise be willing to ascribe some or all of this to false memory, I guess I won’t this time.

His ‘stellar career’ as a neurosurgeon may be over-imagined by some. He may have been leader of a team, but there is always a surgical team. It can’t be done alone. And some surgeries are out on the edges of recommendable. There are desperate cases in which people choose huge risks, and Carson is right there to do the cutting. Separating conjoined twins is always risky, and sometimes a forced choice, as are hemisherectomies. But remember, there was consent or court orders for lobotomies, too.

They’re completely consumed in hatred and lies that confirm that hate. You could show them enough documentation to fill a fucking stadium and they’d swear anything related to the President is faked, full of liberal bias and part of a conspiracy to hide The Real Truth. This is where the internet shows one of it’s biggest flaws. Because anything and everything is available, it’s really easy to confirm it as “the truth”. Antivaxxers, birthers, conspiracy theories, completely bogus information about health, history, science and a whole host of other things have contributed to a more rapid dumbing down that likely at any other point in our history. There are honestly people out there who think because they can look up shit on Google that it’s exactly the same kind of research that scientists and professionals do. I’ve seen it a lot with parents of autistic kids, one of the reasons I left the online “autism community” and even local support groups. In Wingnuttia there’s no such thing as trained professionals vetting a Presidential candidate, no agencies that could find out all manner of super secret things that would end a political career. Nope, only FOX news and conservative minions are the REAL authorities on such vetting. Nothing else counts.

I don’t think so; Johns Hopkins made him a department chief, we can trust them to have investigated every single detail of every single surgery he ever had responsibility for. They’re sticklers about it.

That being said… Ben Carson is a man whose range of knowledge is exceedingly narrow. Deep, but narrow.

He’s like the bazillion surgeons who lose money every year to scam investments; they think having been the smartest guy in their college class is somehow equivalent to being knowledgable about things they never spent a minute on. They’re every scam artist’s favorite target; they’ve got tens of thousands in loose cash to invest in any fly-by-night scam, and when they realize they’ve been had it’s not enough money to be worth the embarassment of filing charges and admitting having been scammed.

re: #75 Nyet

When it comes to memory, I always cut people a lot of slack, probably more than an average person would. I’ve read too many historical testimonies that are chockfull of inaccurate details and contradictions that are nevertheless considered valuable. In fact most substantial historical testimonies I read either contained serious mistakes or contradicted other no less substantial testimonies on details.

“Couldn’t answer my question” generally means the question makes no sense in terms of the actual Law or Theory being discussed. This is especially true of the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics as applied to Evolution, where Creationists always ignore the ‘closed system’ part and ignore the >1000W/m^2 of solar energy streaming down to the surface.

Good grief, indeed. For some reason (boredom) I read some of the comments on his facebook. His followers are even scarier than he is:

If God is for Mr. Carson who can be against him. No weapons form against Mr. Carson shall Prosper in our Lord Jesus name! God is Blessing Dr. Ben Carson! Thank You Lord Jesus!
Lots of Love!

And with true “Christian kindness”:

The press corps needs to be sent on a one-way flight into the valley of death or as those with the good common sense that the Lord gave us know it as the Middle East

And from one of his more mature supporters:

Leave Ben alone. You can’t stand that a decent, God loving, smart individual is willing to open himself up to everything just to help repair our country! If you can’t say true statements - then shut up!

And one of his mathematical/statistical genius supporters:

If the Republicans nominate a black man, the Democrats won’t automatically get 98% of the black vote and the GOP will win. We’ve seen this before, folks (Herman Cain). The media can’t allow the GOP to nominate Dr. Carson.

Some grammatical advice:

I love Ben Carson, but I have two exhortations for the campaign, don’t get cynical. Don’t get defensive. And the grammar has been a little lackluster of late. Remember your question marks Dr. Ben Carson.

And then it’s back to jeebus:
I am sorry Dr Carson, the heat is on now, you are a threat to the enemy, the demons of Hell, and the Satanic world system! STAND STRONG dear dear Dr Carson, we love and pray for your CALL from GOD. You are awsome, WE ARE SO VERY PROUD and BLESSED!!

Some members of the Missouri football team announced on Saturday that they will go on strike until the school’s president, Tim Wolfe, steps down or is forced to leave.

The boycott is part of a student movement against the school administration’s response to a series of alleged racist incidents around campus. A graduate student, Jonathan L. Butler, began a hunger strike in protest of Wolfe on Nov. 2.

From what I’m gathering, it’s something to do with the usual Starbucks Christmas cups actually saying Christmas on them. Now they’re just plain red cups. I … don’t get it.

You haven’t lived until you get a Facebook feed full all the way up with people vowing to never ever shop at a shopping mall because their Santa display doesn’t have a Christmas tree.

This happened here on Long Island yesterday. The mall has since caved and added a tree, but people are still in high dudgeon over it.

I’m convinced that our society has become addicted to rage. People wake up in the morning looking for something to be pissy about.

It works too, despite the absurdity. With the continual drumbeat of “Obama/Democrat=bad” stories the cacophony deadens the senses after awhile, and the audience just start believing something shady is going on.

I don’t think so. Lead icicles hang beautifully because they are heavy, and lead is cheap. What else do we need to consider?

Cellophane is for sissies. Real midcentury families decorated with celluloid, that’s cellulose nitrate with an autoignition temp suited for the Home of the Brave.

Funny how the Birmingham Mail picks a photo of the most religious, holy, revered and Chrsitmasy thing of all…….snowmen.

Also funny how when you read the article there’s no mention of the Birmingham City Council being Muslim controlled—it says the parade was scrapped due to budget cuts (additional funding was unable to be found). People won’t read the whole article though, they’ll just accept Robinson’s bullshit framing:

Birmingham City Council explained the decision in a statement. It said: “Widely reported budget cuts mean the Christmas Parade will not take place this year and subsidies to other events, many of which are led by groups within the community, have been withdrawn - as reported in the Birmingham Mail back in December 2014.

“The Christmas Parade costs around £50,000 to stage each year and can only continue if sponsorship can be found. We made efforts to attract sponsors for this year’s event and will continue to do so for next year.” […]
