Donald Trump Goes All in on the “War on Christmas” Derpfest

Not this again

Get ready for the derp deluge, folks; it looks like the “war on Christmas” is going to be a big part of the GOP’s presidential clown show this year. Donald Trump is already raving about the latest mindless religious right persecution fantasy, that Starbucks is waging a “war on Christmas” by issuing plain red paper cups to hold coffee instead of the ones they used previously, which had images of generic winter stuff like snowflakes and ornaments — not Christian symbols. Are we supposed to think any old holiday-themed imagery is now the province of right wing Christians and can’t be tampered with?

The idiocy burns. Much more than hot coffee in a red cup.

Trump is also promising: “If I become president, we’re all going to be saying Merry Christmas again, that I can tell you.”

Is he serious? It sure sounds like it. I wonder how he plans to pull that off. He’s basically talking about trashing the First Amendment, but who’s counting the amendments he wants to throw out at this point?

I think we’ll hear other like minded crap from the other candidates. I will be genuinely shocked if any of them point out how stupid it is to get your panties bunched up over a cup that you’re going to be throwing in the trash can not wishing you a Merry Christmas. I expect some whining abuot the War on Christmas and political correctness run amok.

If anything, it’s the precise kind of derp that might help raise his profile again.

There seems to be so precious little that can ever actually hurt these assholes in pubilc opinion, and I can’t imagine this will be one of them. There’s too much tolerance and approval for this brand of stupid out there.

I’d believe that Trump was a straight talker who told things how they are if he told people who were offended about this that they’re a bunch of whiny babies who get worked over stupid bullshit.

And then you have the sad clowns who think they’re so witty by having their name as “Merry Christmas” to the baristas. You know what, it’s simple to me. If I know you celebrate Christmas, I probably will wish you a merry one. I may wish you Happy Holidays too though because New Years is literally a week after Christmas. And if I don’t know you, I’ll just say Happy Holidays because I know you celebrate at least one winter holiday. But if you insist on Merry Christmas fine, I’ll say “Merry Christmas asshole, happy now?”

Oh, and I guess Trump was against the war on Christmas before he was for it?

From the wayback machine:

Not Merry Christmas, but Happy Holidays.

Not everyone celebrates Christmas. And some people want to wish folks a happy holiday season, since it starts with Thanksgiving and ends after New Years (such as those who celebrate Eastern Orthodox Christmas). So, Happy Holidays respects them as well.

Me? I go with happy holidays, but don’t get bent out of shape if someone wishes me (a lonely Jew) Merry Christmas.

But I find it rather lame that someone would feel threatened, let alone hurt or treated awful if someone said Happy Holidays to them instead of Merry Christmas. There’s an awful lot of insecurity mixed into that that simply can’t be unpacked due to the derpgasm that’d erupt.

Well, to judge from a great deal of “reaction” from starboard to the Starbucks’ red-cup flap (though mainly RW Internet derp: a piss-poor metric to be sure) said “sensitivity” is either
1) Completely lacking, or
2) Considered a heinous political sin where- and whenever detected.

A constitutional argument is the stronger case to make with folks who are drawn to Trump but who might be able to be brought to realize he would not be a good president.
That’ll include some people who think ‘sensitivity’ is a weasel word of the left. So to reach them you have to show how Trump would endanger the Constitution.

And I know you may not want to reach such a person, but I do.

Meanwhile, Limbaugh is going wall-to-wall on the University of Missouri story. He was incredulous that the hunger striker there had been on campus for SEVEN YEARS. Of course, seeing as Limbaugh has never spent more than seven WEEKS in higher education, it is no shock he has never heard of graduate students.

I really think so. I mean as you get at there’s a lot of holidays that are celebrated this time of year. Why do they need to feel validated by what a stranger wishes them or in this case a coffee cup is beyond me. I mean if I know someone celberates Christmas, sure I’ll say Merry Christmas obviously but if I don’t know you, why not Happy Holidays?

Another GOP debate, and another bunch of lies thrown about without sufficient fact-checking as it happens.

Trump says he’s going to force China to stop with currency manipulation. Ha. Let him get back to us once Trump stops having his clothing line made in China (among other non-US locations).

Carly’s going to skip the part about taxes though. She wont do policy details . While most of her opponents have proffered tax plans that would shatter the debt with trillions of dollars of new debt and shifting the tax burdens from the rich on to everyone else, Carly’s decided not to trot out her own tax plan. Her rationale is that none of the other plans would ever happen, so why trot out a plan that has no chance of success.

It’s one less thing for people to attack her over I guess.

Of course, she’s got plenty of other lies to pick from - and she’s hoping that everyone focuses on Carson’s lies instead of her own.

Meanwhile, Gov. Christie’s standing in NJ is hitting new lows - as the polls are showing NJers want him to quit the race altogether. And other polls show him within view of the dreaded asterisk. As it is, he’s within the MOE.

SDA’s can, and do, eat meat, and that’s officially OK with the religion. Just not so-called “unclean” meat, like pork. However, there is a pretty strong culture of vegetarianism in Adventism. That is to say, while meat eating is OK in Adventism, it’s just frowned upon in many circles.

yeah… they just cleared 300k in pledges in just a couple of hours and we haven’t hit the nighttime facebook crowd yet….

Yup, went up by more than 50K since i checked at first… I’m predicting it crosses well past the first million mark before tomorrow morning local time.
Hell, if Chris Roberts could get two million on a half a million goal for Star Citizen (which then continued beyond Kickstarter to gain more than $94 million to date), I think it’s safe to say that these guys will do well by the end of the campaign..

I wonder if the candidates will be challenged about palling around with the terrorist Kevin Swanson.

Seeing that the Republicans who appeared at this event will be at the Fox Business debates tonight, Maddow said it might be worth asking them why they would attend “a kill-the-gays rally.”

“I don’t know if that is considered to be a scandal anymore in Republican politics,” she said.

My brother in Colombia admitted (on Facebook) that his 2 yr. old daughter has a better grasp of Spanish than he does (he teaches, in Spanish, at a university).

Heh. My niece speaks some Spanglish. I was as a good lefty proud to see a photo of her using her left hand to write with. My brother says she favors her left when eating too. Her other grandpa will be happy about that development as well.

If I had one of these idiots order right before me, I’d give the name Happy Holidays just to wind them up…If I’d been in a Starbucks in the past decade.

It’s really deeply funny to me that Trump is pandering so hard to a group of people that, to first order, might not exist.

Who has found a facebook wingnut who’s agitated about this? Show of hands?

To be fair to the wingnuts I know on Facebook, I haven’t seen any of them say anything but I did see one try to act like it was people like us making a big deal over nothing. I didn’t say anything but I did think well Fox and CNN gave the guy the bully pulpit and Trump is going along with it too and I honestly expect the others to follow suit.

And WTF with a FIVE and SEVEN year old pledging their purity? What in the hell is going on in that household FFS? Who looks at their little daughters that age and thinks about their virginity? The teens are bad enough, but seriously?

Keep the kids busy, male and female. Encourage their interests, get them outside doing physical things and using their brains for something besides school and church. I guarantee you a busy, self confident kid who has plans and is educated about sex is going to make far better choices than these purity pledge girls are. And what about the boys? Since, you know, most of the fear here from the dads is boys sniffing around their daughters…What are they teaching their sons? Anything? And seriously, I have to laugh at any parent in 2015 who thinks they can stop teenagers from thinking about and having sex. Good luck with that dumbasses.

And here’s Charles P. Pierce on the “wisdom” of Chuck Todd having Hugh Hewitt on his panel (I especially love the description of “one el” Michele Bachmann being a little off the plumb):

The fact that Hewitt’s radio programme is “an essential destination” for anyone except angry shut-ins who spend their days forwarding chain e-mails about the Hildebeast should tell us all a lot about the state of our politics. In 2012, he was an unabashed Willard Romney fanboy. A year later, he was promoting very silly ideas about the Affordable Care Act. And in 2011, he was advising that year’s big ship of fools to stay away from the mainstream media, lest the nation be reminded that, say, Michele Bachmann, was a little off the plumb.

Somehow, though, that same mainstream media, and especially the NBC family of platforms, has decided to loan some of its tattered respectability to Hewitt this time around, possibly on the theory that he is not Mark Levin.

I’m guessing at an acquaintance’s place in all likelihood (hotels in Israel are freakin’ expensive for no good reason). Though they wouldn’t have an issue at any hotel, even if they identified by their organization’s name, since hotel managements in the country generally don’t scrutinize that much - you’d be fine so long as you didn’t go into the hotel wearing a Klan outfit, and even then it’d only be due to security standards (most Israelis don’t know what the KKK was/is)…

That gets me thinking about why the George Allen racial slur nine years back pissed me off so much. Yes, the slur was awful but what I think the media did not drive home was that he was acting like the kid (Indian-American, Virginia born and raised which Allen was not), was this outsider. I think Bachmann said about the Jewish people what many American conservative Evangelicals like her see them as and that’s tools. And that makes her a bigot. So—without even knowing who’s going to be nominated this time, I think the real question is: with a crowded Klown Kar like this, how are they going to determine whose “turn” it is in 2020?

Assuming Rubio doesn’t win the nomination, it’ll be his turn in 2020. Usually the turn is based on who came in second the last time (Reagan, GHW Bush, McCain, Romney), or who has put in enough time to warrant it (Nixon, Dole, Ford - though Ford was a bit of an outlier).

Rubio probably has the best chance of coming in second. I’m not sure if there’s someone in the Senate or in a governor’s office that can pull rank. That said, I would keep an eye on Susana Martinez as a possible candidate in 2020 and probably a Veep pick this time.

Why is that a stupid figure. I think as of 2014 it was just north of 70% and within the last decade it was close to 80%.

Of course the percentage is really irrelevant to the issue unless it was 100%.

Also, Christianity is not monolithic, and several denominations do not celebrate Christmas basically at all. Which brings us to what I think is the real reason Trump is jumping on the the red cups nonsense, the Seventh Day Adventist Church is among the denominations that do not consider the day to be a holy one. Ben Carson belongs to the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

This is a good page to keep bookmarked—the report is from this year:

America’s Changing Religious Landscape
Christians Decline Sharply as Share of Population; Unaffiliated and Other Faiths Continue to Grow

The Christian share of the U.S. population is declining, while the number of U.S. adults who do not identify with any organized religion is growing, according to an extensive new survey by the Pew Research Center. Moreover, these changes are taking place across the religious landscape, affecting all regions of the country and many demographic groups. While the drop in Christian affiliation is particularly pronounced among young adults, it is occurring among Americans of all ages. The same trends are seen among whites, blacks and Latinos; among both college graduates and adults with only a high school education; and among women as well as men. […]

There’s probably a few things going on. A generational shift where older believers are dying off and the younger people replacing them are secular or spiritual or whatever could be behind part of it. I wouldn’t be surprised if the decline among Catholics is due in part to people leaving the church due to the sex abuse stories. And probably a share of it is people who didn’t ever really believe but identified as Christian because that was the default, but now that there’s a shift away from that being the default, they’re more comfortable saying they’re unaffiliated. Or it could all be statistical noise.

Yeah, I think it would be hard to tell anecdotally, at least around here in massachusetts religion just doesn’t come up all that often. I have friends from college who I knew for over a decade before learning they were actually pretty religious and did the whole church every sunday thing.

Maybe it is because knowing some of the things they did in college I just assumed they would burst into flames if they walked into a church ;)

Let me be clear: Feuerstein can believe what he wants as long as it doesn’t infringe on my rights, but I don’t think a whole lot of his followers would like being told that they aren’t really following the Bible according to Feuerstein’s lights (at least in 2013).

A challenge to my Catholic and Christian friends…

Just thought this was interesting as I perused Feuerstein’s abandoned YouTube channel.

I am so tired of IPAs. I don’t hate them, but seriously try something else folks. I went to the Craft Beer festival in Boston this summer and I swear it was like 70% IPAs 20% Stouts and then 10% for everything else*.

* Percentages pulled out of my ass, but that’s what it seemed like.

** Totally agree with the craft liquor thing.

IPA is the hip style of the moment, but it will shift to other styles. I’m a fan of good IPAs, but some of them load up on the bitters to the point of them being awful.

You know though here’s the thing. I like Bernie Sanders quite a bit. In fact, I wager to say I knew about him before most of his other under 30 supporters. I appreciate what he stands for. And hell I may even vote for him in February but some of his supporters have the same ring up that a lot of conservative Republicans do that the best candidate is the one that fits your ideology the best. Bernie’s a great guy and I’ll be happy to vote for him but don’t act like he’s the only way we’ll get progress in 2016 and beyond and that any Clinton supporter is just a “corporate Democrat” or a “DLC lackey.”

I know it sounds ageist but goddamn, two candidates who will both be over 70 their first year in office is terrible optics if you’re trying to sell the country you’re about the future. I’m going to have to rewatch DS9 on Netflix, I forgot how much I liked a lot of those characters. This quote from the Quark IMDB page is just great:

Quark: What’s that disgusting smell?
Nog: I think it’s called tobacco. It’s a deadly drug. When used frequently, it destroys the internal organs.
Quark: If it’s so deadly, then why do they use it?
Nog: It’s also highly addictive.
Rom: How do they get their hands on it?
Nog: They buy it in stores.
Quark: [stunned] They buy? If they buy poison they’ll buy anything. I think I’m gonna like it here.

Quark: I’d always heard primitive Humans lacked intelligence, but I had no idea they were this stupid.

Quark: The three of us and millions of primitive Humans - I like those odds.

Quark: These Humans, they’re nothing like the ones from the Federation. They’re crude, gullible and greedy.
Odo: You mean, like you?
Quark: Yeah! These are Humans I can understand - and manipulate.

I’m convinced the DNC were grooming Julian Castro to run for Governor here, which is why they had him keynote in 2012. It’s no accident he was on his way to DC right after Wendy Davis became the front-runner and why he was out of Texas before the elections.

I can maybe add two things. Most of the scholars of religion I know on the topic are citing the generational shift among millennials toward a more pluralistic or secular outlook.

But also, information is just so much more readily available about religion online than was true 10 years ago. It used to be that people had to rely on their preachers or sunday school teachers but now you can go online to any number of perspectives.

My sense too is that people are leaving American Christianity for a more rational or skeptical worldview. Some Catholics may be leaving over the Church abuse, the same goes as well as fundamentalist churches. I attended an Evangelical Christian college and a number of my friends (myself included) gradually left the Christian faith altogether once we learned that everything we had been taught in church was a stretch.

The nice thing about IPAs is that they are fast and easy to make—no aging, no long term storage, fast acting yeast, etc. You can also achieve widely varying flavor profiles fairly easily.

Stouts, esp. big stouts, an example, require a reasonably amount of time to age. Same thing with sours and a number of Belgian styles. Similarly, any type of lager has a significantly longer turn around time (to say nothing of environmental controls needed to achieve proper fermentation temps).

One unusual brew I’m rather fond of is from Dogfish Head, called “Midas Touch”. The backstory is that it’s derived from the result of archaeological research into the contents of the beverage flagons and such collected at the site of King Midas’ funeral. How true is that? Mild Ales, ordinary bitters, and other low octane English (and Belgian beers) are tough to come by in terms of bottled beers. Women’s bathrooms have stalls, FFS. We’re not all standing in line at the urinals. These anti-trans bigots are so obnoxious.

It is perhaps telling that the first thing they think of is the prospect of men watching women pee. The second is men dressing like women to assault women in the Ladies Room.

The question of what men might do to a trans woman in the Mens Room doesn’t occur to them.

I think these first appeared as something for female mountaineers and other extreme temp activities. I can really understand the utility at below zero temps.

Hey, after having to excavate my own willy from behind 5 layers of clothing during a cold hunt in Montana, I think they might be useful for men, too.

I’ve referred to that experience as “Fly Fishing.”

I think they’ve been around in some form since the 1970s, but that is just based on my recollection of hearing about them while in college. I could be deluding myself.

German beer purity laws are pretty watered down now. It’s more a certification to use the word “Bier” and only applies to bottom-fermenting beers (i.e. lagers like pilsners and bocks) and not to ales.

Though very German, the notion is pretty outdated. Many of the best beers in the world, usually from Belgian, use tons of sugar, and there are many spectacular beers that add fruit, spices, chilis, coffee, honey etc. Less than half the beers I brew would pass.

There are non-hopped beers called gruits. They’re ancient pre-hop beers that use herbs and bitter berries. They’re mostly gross.

Opportunity missed sigh. Real shame especially with him since it was so sudden.

I believe there was a right-wing conspiracy theory about him having been “eliminated.” Can’t remember what pertinent info he supposedly had access tom but that never stops a good Alex Jones et al theory.

Isn’t this a matter for the City of Dallas to decide, rather than Dana’s deranged listeners from outside Dallas?

It’s also the kind of thing that city councils normally do.
Where in this country is every single potential ordinance put to a voter’s ballot?
Dana is nutz…oh, apologies for redundancy…

Good idea, I recently got a cheap full spectrum camera. It’s might cool and Lifepixel does the conversions right.
