Passport Found Near Terrorist’s Body May Have Been Planted to Stir Up Anti-Migrant Hatred

And the Republican Party eagerly plays along
World • Views: 55,391

Some interesting news from the investigation into the terrorist attacks in Paris: the Syrian passport found near one of the terrorists’ bodies may have been planted in an attempt to stir up anti-immigrant hatred in Europe.

“The single most intriguing fact is that the passport was there at all,” one French official source said. “It was not actually on the terrorist’s body, or what remained of it. It was lying nearby, as if meant to be found.” The holder of the passport was named as Ahmed Almuhamed, aged 25. A man of this name entered the European Union on a Syrian passport with 69 other refugees after their boat sank off the Greek island of Leros on 3 October.

The idea that one of the Paris “black Friday” terrorists may have been a recent Syrian refugee to the EU was seized upon gleefully by right-wing newspapers and politicians across Europe. The discovery appeared to substantiate claims that Isis terrorists have infiltrated the hundreds of thousands of refugees who have entered Europe this year.

French officials say that they have no proof that the Stade de France suicide bomber – one of three who detonated crude explosive belts at the stadium – was Mr Almuhamed. Intelligence sources in the US told CBS news that there are doubts whether the passport is authentic. The number of the document is incorrect and name does not match the picture, it was claimed.

Paris police were reported to have believed that the passport, and another found at the scene, were fakes made in Turkey. There is known to be a flourishing trade in fake Syrian passports in both Turkey and Europe. But that does not necessarily mean that the man who entered Greece as a refugee was not also the man who blew himself up.

French investigators fear that the apparent “planting” of the passport is part of a sophisticated propaganda war being waged by Isis. “There are three possibilities,” one source said. “He is the man whose name is on the passport. He was a false refugee, travelling on a false passport. Or he is someone else and a false passport was deliberately left there to sow confusion.”

In all three cases, Isis appears to have set out to stoke popular anger against Syrian migrants as part of their campaign to foment anti-Muslim feeling.

Right wing parties and media in Europe aren’t the only ones doing exactly what ISIS wants; here in the US, Republican governors are also dancing to the terrorists’ tune and rejecting Syrian refugees.

At least ten Republican governors are moving to block Syrian refugees from entering their states after Friday’s terrorist attacks in Paris that killed at least 130 people and wounded hundreds more.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson on Monday joined Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley and Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder in refusing to accept refugees from Syria.

“Planted” is somewhat misleading, because it would be the ISIS terrorist himself bringing the passport - fake as it might be - not ISIS miraculously planting it afterwards (which doesn’t make much sense).

The investigator quoted in the article says it was “found nearby” as if it was meant to be discovered.

Same thing happened with the Charlie Hebdo Attack

Magic Passports Redux: Syrian Passport Allegedly Discovered on Suicide Bomber

This theme was repeated last January in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo Attack, when one of the alleged gunman’s ID card was magically left on the seat of their ‘get-away’ car. This convenient placement was used to establishment the ‘terrorists link’ to Yemen and the illusive “al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula”.

You would think the Republicans would pause a moment and think before being sucked into exactly the narrative that benefits ISIS.
“Let’s declare WAR!!!” (and legitimize their need to be thought of as a nation instead of a criminal organization).

Not necessarily. It could have been placed there by one of his accomplices after he blew himself up, to make sure it would be discovered and not destroyed in the explosion.

Since the investigators are apparently blaming ISIS, and unless we imagine a complicated scenario in which the terrorists blow themselves up, and then yet another accomplice “plants” the passport and somehow disappears (a scenario that doesn’t make sense), the most plausible version is of the suicide bombers themselves throwing the passport on the floor.

Since the word “planting” is ambiguous enough to cause questions about third parties, such as yours, its choice is unfortunate.

Occam’s razor. Some undiscovered accomplices with a sole mission of planting a passport, or the bombers simply throwing it on the floor? The smaller number of assumptions wins.

We also don’t know the condition of the “planted” passport. He could have dropped it nearby before blowing himself up. All that is required is that it be readable afterwards.

This is how I’ve been imagining it. It made no sense to me that a body would largely be blown to hell and the passport survive in tact unless it had been thrown on the ground before the detonation. I have no idea, but that’s never stopped me before from speculating.

Going back and reading, I think the French are using “planting” to mean “placing of evidence to drive the investigation/reaction in a particular direction” not in the sense of “being placed by someone after.” Or, as this definition says: “Planted evidence is evidence that has been changed, or established at a scene, to make it appear as related to the accused party.”

The real sin here by the media and not just RW media; no investigation. CNN first reported on this to state, as a fact, that one of the killers definitely came over with the refugees. No critical analysis at all.

34
lawhawk  Nov 16, 2015 • 11:33:23am

Passports found. The task is to match the passports to the remains of the terrorists involved, if possible. There are discrepancies in the passports, which makes verification more difficult.

They could have been “planted” by the terrorists to sow fear/discord against refugees, which is the outcome favorable to ISIL. Or by someone else entirely.

Who and how they were planted is a separate question - one of the known terrorists - before they were killed or detonated one of their suicide vests - or some as yet to be identified person, who could be aligned with the terrorists or someone else entirely with an intention to implicate refugees for their own purposes.

It’ll take time to track down the identifies of the terrorists involved, and the paperwork on them. But a whole lot of people will spill a ton of ink in the interim as to how to blame the terror attacks on the refugees who are trying to flee the terrorists.

The goal is to make sure that people don’t see ‘immigrant’ or ‘refugee’, they see ‘invading army’. That they don’t see a human, they see a living plague. It’s about the dehumanization of the plight. And that goes for both Da’esh militants and our own right wing nutters: different reasons, same MO and same goal.

Of course they can’t! Or rather, it can’t be assured that every single bad apple will be found. The same can be said of refugees from any other country, and for that matter it can be said of citizens of any stripe. There will always be folks slipping through the cracks. It’s a laughable premise that there can ever be complete certainty that no individual from [demographic] will ever do something bad.

Perhaps a better use of time and effort might be to give the scary brown people a reason to like the US (or France, or whatever) rather than hate us and want to blow us up.

Nahhhh, that’d never work.

The Obama Administration says they will resettle 10,000 Syrian refugees in the US in FY 2016 which began October 1. Here is a map showing where the first 187 Syrians have been placed (as of today). Two weeks ago, it had been only 51 (see here), but Kentucky is still the number one destination (here with 26).

Frankly, it’s a lot of silly whining about something that can’t be changed anyway. If people really want to cross a border in ones and twos, they will achieve it.

1) You can conduct this sort of terrorism with two or three or five folks.
2) Something like fifty people per year were able to get by the Berlin Wall, probably the most intensively fortified border in history.
3) Nobody is building a Berlin-Wall-scale fortification over thousands of miles of borders.

And that’s pretty much that. I’m not saying these recent events aren’t horrible and outrageous and demanding of action, but the idea we can just put up a big fence and keep every single scary brown person out is almost terminally stupid.

If you really really wanted to I guess you could put up a pretty big wall and keep out most of the DEY TOOK ER JERBS Mexican immigrants, but even that alleged “solution” is a complete non-starter here, unworthy of intelligent discussion.

Don’t know about Snowden’s involvement in the Paris attacks (there wasn’t any), but I sure as heck wouldn’t take Snowden’s advice on protecting against data theft unless you make sure that Snowden is nowhere near any of your data considering that he’d steal it and release it to parties unknown.

I suspect the link betweenSnowball and Paris is the inability of the French security forces to prevent the attack from their intel. Is there a link between Snowball releasing NSA methods, terrorists changing their tactics & the French intelligence community not picking up on new terrorist tactics?

I’ve seen some people pointing out that groups like ISIS are now using strong encryption for their communications, presumably because of the info in the documents stolen by Snowden. There’s no way to prove this, of course, but it certainly seems possible.

The really offensive thing, though, is that Glenn Greenwald just brushes off and mocks the idea. I’d have some small respect for him if he at least admitted it’s a possibility that some terrorist groups may have learned something from the Snowden documents — but he just denies it categorically, which is bullshit.

I Googled “hijacker passport found near Ground Zero” but there is so much Troofer bullshit I couldn’t find an actual confirmation.

MS. SUSAN GINSBURG: Beginning with passports. Four of the hijackers passports have survived in whole or in part. Two were recovered from the crash site of United Airlines flight 93 in Pennsylvania. These are the passports of Ziad Jarrah and Saeed al Ghamdi. One belonged to a hijacker on American Airlines flight 11. This is the passport of Satam al Suqami. A passerby picked it up and gave it to a NYPD detective shortly before the World Trade Center towers collapsed. A fourth passport was recovered from luggage that did not make it from a Portland flight to Boston on to the connecting flight which was American Airlines flight 11. This is the passport of Abdul Aziz al Omari.

911myths.com

Not Atta’s passport - Satam al Suqami’s. Here’s the section referred to by the footnote mentioned in that article:

April 23. Waleed al Shehri and Satam al Suqami, both Saudis, entered together at Orlando from Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Suqami was the only Saudi muscle hijacker admitted on business, and only for one month. Shehri was admitted as a tourist for a six- month stay. Both were admitted by the same primary immigration inspector.108 Suqami’s passport survived the attack: a passerby picked it up from the World Trade Center and handed to a New York Police Department detective shortly before the towers collapsed.109 Later analysis showed that it contained what are now believed to be fraudulent travel stamps associated with al Qaeda.110

I’m surprised to find out this story is true.

The counter-point might be that it was a late idea and they could only get their hands on this one passport in time.

So he was grateful to the young man who shared sympathy with the cab driver and they both cried on the ride to the young man’s house. Less than an hour later who do I see on my newsfeed (via another wingnut who was blocked and deleted out my life) but Pamela Geller’s yap running about a Muslim attacking a Jewish cab driver and beating him up while screaming how much he hates Jews. One of the reasons that the Russian stooges…….errr, DNR freedom fighters gave for the Malaysian airline disaster having been faked* was that all the passports looked new. Lots were found in the wreckage. It’s not unusual.

What the Putinistas failed to understand is that in most of the world, you use your passport only for international travel, so it stays looking new. In Russia/DNR, you have an internal passport that must be kep on hand (“papers, please”) and gets quite worn.

(*One of their crazier attempts to explain things away. Apparently the airliner was filled with corpses, and then blown up to make Rasha look bad.)

Yep. We have people in this country who are looking for ANY excuse at all to keep on hating. This morning a story was circulating via Twitter about a young man who hailed a Muslim cab driver in NYC on Friday. The driver was sad and scared because he couldn’t pick up fares, people were refusing to ride with him. Ok Pammy, yay you. This is what we’re up against along with actual assholes in ISIS, Daesh and other groups like them. They’re feeding off each other’s sickness.

Yes, I saw the story of the cab driver this morning. It’s heartbreaking, and i’m sure just one of far too many similar stories around the country/world.

If

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ‘em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!”

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son.

MS Saint Louis and the “Voyage of the Damned,” 1939

The MS St. Louis was a German ocean liner most notable for a single voyage in 1939, in which her captain, Gustav Schröder, tried to find homes for 908 Jewish refugees from Germany, after they were denied entry to Cuba, the United States and Canada, until finally accepted in various European countries, which were later engulfed in World War II. Historians have estimated that, after their return to Europe, approximately a quarter of the ship’s passengers died in concentration camps.

Gustav Schroeder at Yad Vashem, Righteous Among the Nations.

Had the St. Louis headed straight back to a German harbor, its Jewish passengers would have all certainly ended up in Nazi concentration camps. It was, thus, primarily thanks to Captain Schroeder’s courage and determination not to abandon his Jewish passengers to their fate that many of them were able to escape the Nazi death trap.

Otoh, the refusal to accept this ship is harshly condemned today, at it still will be a thousand years from now. The governors who have refused Syrian refugees might do well to keep this in mind as they weigh the transitory advantage of pandering to ignorant bigots.

The Tsarnaev brothers and their two sisters moved to the Dagestan region of Russia in October 2001 from the central Asian nation of Kyrgyzstan as refugees, and left for the U.S in March 2002, said Emirmagomed Davudov, director of Gimnasium Number 1 in Dagestan, where Tamerlan went to the seventh grade and Dzhokhar to first grade.

The parents first received asylum and then filed for the children, who were given “derivative asylum status” and didn’t come through the refugee admissions program, though the legal standard is essentially the same, said a State Department official who asked not to be identified to discuss the case.

Not sure how legit vox.com is as a source for info??

vox.com

No immigrant is legally allowed to come to the US if she’s ever been affiliated with a terrorist group, or if she’s provided “material support” to one. For refugees, that ban extends to the spouses and children of anyone who’s been affiliated with or materially supported a terrorist group. And it’s one of the things investigators most consider when they conduct a security check on a refugee — and a big reason why it takes 18 to 24 months to process a resettlement application.

Syrian refugees have to prove a negative: that they have never had any involvement with any group the US would consider terrorists. For men who have served with one rebel group or another during the war, that can often be impossible; if a man left a rebel group when it affiliated with al-Qaeda, he has no way to prove that he wasn’t an al-Qaeda affiliate himself. Families that have had no involvement with any groups, meanwhile, face the difficult task of proving the absence of any involvement. And this is compounded by the administrative problems in processing Syrian refugees: Different databases may transliterate Arabic names differently, making them hard to cross-check; some names may sound alike and lead to confusion of identity.

The St. Louis is part of the bigger chapter of American refusal to accept Jewish refugees in greater numbers. Even after WWII, the US refused to allow Jewish displaced persons in great numbers, and when they finally changed the law, many Jews opted to settle in Israel instead.

Oh, and on Twitter I love how some blame all this on FDR and Democrats’ policies, even though there were RW isolationists and anti Semites rampant throughout State Department and domestically looking to nativists to keep out undesirables - the Jews.

Another thing that’s interesting is how various anti-Semitic conspiracy theories get turned into anti-Muslim conspiracy theories. Back in the day, there was a conspiracy theory claiming that Christians were paying a secret “Kosher tax”, now we have to Pamela Geller et al. claim we’re paying a secret “halal tax”.

It’s the same crap. CL has researched it more recently than I have but it really is eerie how the crap spewed at Muslims today is no different than what Jews experienced in the past. It’s part of why someone like Geller is so detestable. I hope this doesn’t come off patronizing as a non-Jew to a Jew but she really should know better given what the Jewish people have experienced with conspiracy and innuendo.

I don’t know what Aaron’s other political beliefs are but he showed himself to be one of the good guys in the world of sports with that reaction yesterday.

Refugees apply for resettlement at American embassies or through the United Nations. If they pass that first hurdle, they are screened by outposts of the Department of State all over the world. They undergo investigations of their biography and identity; FBI biometric checks of their fingerprints and photographs; in-person interviews by Department of Homeland Security officers; medical screenings as well as investigations by the National Counter-terrorism Centre and by American and international intelligence agencies. The process may take as long as three years, sometimes longer. No other person entering America is subjected to such a level of scrutiny.

A Cranky One  Nov 16, 2015 • 1:39:49pm

A man was going down from Syria to escape a war, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead.

An ex-governor minister happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.

So too, a conservative neurosurgeon, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.

So too, some conservative governors came to the place and seeing him, passed by on the other side. “Go back to where you came from” they chanted.

A filthy rich man came to the place and seeing him, said “Taker!” and passed by on the other side.

A group of Fox commentators came to the place and seeing him, they called him all manner of insults and told him to lift himself by his own bootstraps, as he was obviously a lazy bum for laying there. And lazy bums shouldn’t get healthcare.

But a liberal, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him.

He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own vehicle, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out his credit card and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

“Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who was fleeing the war?”

The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” As for those Republican asshats, I know them not.

And all these years later, I’m still a dues-paying member!

They do so much good for this country. Anyone who hates them should really reevaluate their values.

You left out where he had to go to two or three inns in order to find one that would take the man.

He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine.

Maybe update that part. Antiseptics would be more effective than oil and wine.

re: #48 Charles Johnson

Anyone tempted to think John Kasich is some kind of “moderate” — note that he’s one of the GOP governors now rejecting Syrian refugees.

It’s absolutely disgusting to see these people turning their backs on refugees who are fleeing those areas specifically to escape from ISIS. And these governors are all supposedly Christians.

Oh that’s going to go over real well here in Columbus. We do have a fairly healthy Muslim and Mid-East population. I hope some of the local churches light Kasich’s ass
up for this pandering.

Okay, I need to take a mental health break.

Thank you guys for being sane, especially those of you old timers who were here before the purge and Charles’ break with the Right. In the days before the Boston Marathon bombings I worried that if there was another terrorist attack here some of you might backslide, but no one did. Then all the Daesh horrors, Charlie Hebdo and now Paris, and all of you are still hanging on firmly to your sanity. You guys rock.

And Charles, if you’re watching thank you for leading the way. You have no idea how much it means to have an oasis of calm, rational fellow Americans to turn to during times like these.

P.S. Just so you guys know, I was nearly paralyzed with dread when I got on Twitter late Friday afternoon and realized something terrible had happened. My DM to CJ:

The one truly annoying state in that list is MA. The rest are, sadly, expected.

If we had a Democrat governor I feel it safe to say Ohio would be right in there accepting.

IN other words this is Kasich being a political pandering fuckwad running for president and it does not represent the people of the state.

I think that should be considered for other states too. Problem is, stuff like this isn’t voted on by the people of the state.

Fuck Kasich. This is the dick in him.

Why would you do that to perfectly good dicks?

Don”t worry; she will get only the most syphilitic and partially decomposed dicks.

Might be worth hammering on how un-Christian it is, and how it violates specific instructions from Jesus about how they should be treated, even though you aren’t religious yourself.

Pretty much all the anti-Muslim memes have been plagiarized from old anti-Jewish memes.

Hate doesn’t change its tactics, just its targets.
