Marco Rubio: Close Down All the Places

Strict constitutionalists call for throwing out the constitution
Politics • Views: 57,800

Marco Rubio has been (sort of) trying to position himself as relatively sane compared to the Trumps and Carsons in this presidential race — a position he does not deserve. For example, Rubio is a fanatical anti-choice extremist who would completely ban all abortions, even if the life of the mother is in danger.

And just like the rest of the Republican candidates, Rubio is spewing unconstitutional anti-Muslim craziness: Rubio On Closing Mosques: We Should Close Any Place ‘Where Radicals Are Being Inspired’.

“Well, I think it’s not about closing down mosques. It’s about closing down any place, whether it’s a cafe, a diner, an internet site, any place where radicals are being inspired,” the senator said. “The bigger problem we have is our inability to find out where these places are because we’ve crippled our intelligence programs.”

“So whatever facility is being used — it’s not just a mosque — any facility that’s being used to radicalize and inspire attacks against the United States should be a place that we look at,” Rubio added.

Rubio is basically parroting Donald Trump, of course:

There’s no downside for Republicans in saying these kinds of things; in this season of xenophobia and fear, the voting base eats it up and begs for more.

And by the way, the surveillance of Muslims these people are calling for was already tried in New York for more than 10 years; and while it definitely violated the constitutional rights of the people it spied upon, it never generated a single lead.

UPDATE at 11/20/15 12:45:20 pm by Charles Johnson

Marco Rubio tries to sound like an expert on fighting terrorism, but please note that he doesn’t feel the need to attend hearings or briefings on terrorism.

Honestly from an American context, the religious right scares me far more than ISIS for one very easy reason. ISIS doesn’t have people sympathetic to its goal in our government meanwhile the RR with its dreams of theocracy has tons of sympathizers in the GOP.

re: #16 lawhawk

Mr. Goldberg? Let me explain something to you.

Mr. Trump, Mr. Rubio, do not believe that what they are doing is evil. They believe it is a great good that will make America a better and safer place.

Very few people get up in the morning and decide, “Let’s see what sort of utterly horrible thing I can to do humanity and my nation today.” They get up thinking exactly the opposite.

Good and evil, I am sorry to say, are relative things and perspectives on those things differ greatly.

That doesn’t stop me from thinking that what the GOP presidential candidates are saying is the epitome of evil. But I realize that’s just my opinion.

So I’m afraid your advice is quite useless.

Uber Driver Says Passenger Mistook Him For A Muslim, Threatened To Kill Him

Samson Woldemichael is a Christian. But the 40-year-old Ethiopian immigrant and father of two, who works as an Uber driver in North Carolina, says he was the victim of Islamophobia this weekend when a passenger threatened his life before violently attacking him during a late-night fare.

Woldemichael says he picked up his assailant, a white man in his 30s, a little before 2 a.m. Sunday outside an Irish pub in Charlotte. The ride started out normally enough, with the two men making small talk. But Woldemichael says when he arrived at what the passenger gave as his home address, the man started to threaten him.

“He told me he was going to shoot me right in face or strangle me,” Woldemichael told The Huffington Post. “He used a lot of bad words… really dirty words, and said I was a Muslim.”

Woldemichael says that even after he told the man he wasn’t a Muslim, the man continued to threaten him. “He was telling me he was going to kill me right there, next to his residence.”

At that point, Woldemichael says, he asked the passenger to get out of the car. The passenger, in turn, asked Woldemichael to get out. Woldemichael says the two stared into each other’s eyes for a few tense seconds, and then he decided to start driving again.

“I started driving because I didn’t feel safe anymore to park there,” he told WBTV this week.

Woldemichael says he drove halfway around the block before the passenger “hit me so hard on the forehead with his bare hand.”

“He then choked me with one arm,” Woldemichael added, “and started hitting me with the other one. I couldn’t move. The only thing I could do was step on the brake, and then I was honking on the horn continuously.”

Woldemichael told WBTV the man then got out of the car, ran a short distance away and then turned around and launched into another tirade, this time keeping his hand behind his back as though he were armed.

That’s when Woldemichael says he drove away and called 911. The cops, he said, arrived within a few minutes, but by that point his assailant had disappeared into the night.

[…]

Woldemichael’s assault is one among a rash of reported anti-Islam incidents across the United States since the Paris terror attacks last week by Islamic State operatives that killed at least 129 people and injured another 350.

On Saturday, there were reports of gunshots fired at a mosque in Meriden, Connecticut. Nearby, at the University of Connecticut, the words “killed Paris” were found scrawled on the door of an Egyptian student’s dorm room.

In Nebraska, someone spray-painted an image of the Eiffel Tower on the side of the Omaha Islamic Center.

In Texas, someone threw feces and torn pages of the Quran outside the Islamic Center of Pflugerville. Also in Texas, a man was arrested for making a terroristic threat after writing on social media that he was going to “shoot up a mosque.”

In Florida, a man was arrested after calling in bomb threats to two mosques.

And in Oklahoma, cops shot a man after he threatened to fire at “anything that looks like a Muslim.”

That list doesn’t include the idiots who threatened the Muslim guy at the Town Hall in Virginia the other day.

These incidents are limited to the United States either. North of the border in my homeland, there have been several xenophobic attacks on Muslims in Toronto including verbal abuse on Subway trains and the intimidation of a Muslim woman outside a school while she was waiting to pick up her kids.

There have not been any deaths yet but I fear they are coming before long. This shit is starting to get out of hand.

It’s so bizarre, I seem to remember Western society being much LESS xenophobic in the 90s. I guess perhaps 9/11 did more lasting damage to us than we thought.

Except that GWB would be labeled a RINO and run out of the room.

“America counts millions of Muslims amongst our citizens, and Muslims make an incredibly valuable contribution to our country,” said Bush in his remarks at the Islamic Center in September 2001. “Muslims are doctors, lawyers, law professors, members of the military, entrepreneurs, shopkeepers, moms and dads. And they need to be treated with respect. In our anger and emotion, our fellow Americans must treat each other with respect.”
Can you imagine if Obama had said that? I never was a big GWB fan but he never engaged in the hate of Muslims that these candidates including his own brother.are engaging in.

By no means, we’re on the same page. I’ve been getting fed up with the supposed moderates too because they create this machine by either MBFing or by in the past enabling them. I really as I said think the problem is with conservative ideology itself. Until that changes, the right will always have a happy home to people like Trump.

No, we’re looking for candidates who know that if someone is proposing an unconstitutional, illegal, or otherwise out-of-bounds solution, that the candidate would identify and respond as much.

Saying that you’ll look into it, followed by saying that “I would implement that. Absolutely” is the precisely wrong way to respond.

So far, none of the GOPers seem to get that - and even fewer of the right wing pundits.

Not only deserve to be in power, they’re God’s servants. Basic traditional Christianity.

1Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.

6This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

From The Ballad of Reading Gaol, Oscar Wilde:

“The vilest deeds like poison weeds
Bloom well in prison air;
It is only what is good in man
That wastes and withers there.
Pale Anguish keeps the heavy gate,
And the Warder is Despair.

For they starve the little frightened child
Till it weeps both night and day:
And they scourge the weak, and flog the fool,
And gibe the old and grey,
And some grow mad, and all grow bad,
And none a word may say.”

A buddy and I were talking about Trump last night. We were still both wondering if this is the real Trump or is he still jacking around saying shit knowing it sells and he doesn’t buy a half of it? Can we really know?

Our reasoning, he was successful as a business man. He was the ultimate salesman, seemingly able to get major financial institutions to carry him, governments to cater to him and contractors to build his buildings. We are told he spent very little of his own money and used others. That does take some talent.

If he was as wacky as he seems now, some of this evil stuff he says as a candidate should have been revealed throughout his career. Sure he always had the big ego, but he never blurted out this crazy bigoted bullshit as far as I can remember.

So, again, is he bullshitting everyone? Is this the real Donald Trump, or was the younger Trump the real Donald? Or, is there a real Donald Trump and he is the great chameleon/shape-shifter that is what he needs to be for what ever he is getting over on?

You know, I was thinking about this and how 9/11 kinda (kinda???) made this country lose it’s damned mind and then it occurred to me that the ONLY reason we’re not moving forward from there, and in fact drifting backwards is because of the fearmongering in the media which is then amplified 100x online. The graphics and music intros on the TV, the panicked tone on the radio, the newspaper headlines and the shit being recycled over and over online is what’s driving most of this. It’s not that terrorism is no threat at all, but this over exaggeration of what’s really happening is what is actually more scary than anything ISIL could be doing to us. Because it’s long term, it’s got into people’s heads and it’s spreading like an infection. What happened in Paris happens all over the world all the time. And yet it took an attack in France (home of the cheese eating surrender monkeys, for those who remember that bit of embarrassing stupidity) to bring back the fear?

We’re being turned on one another for a reason. The previous time was so that a few people could take a whole lot of money and line their pockets with it. Is that what’s happening now or is it something even worse? I wish I was smart enough to unravel it. I’m scared, and it’s not of ISIL.

Oh goody. He lives in Buckhead, in Atlanta. More money than brains in that part of town. Very white, very wealthy and anyone who isn’t them is well, undesirable. That area is also home to bars, shops and restaurants. Some high end, some not. Guess which ones the neighbors complain about and want shut down? I haven’t really been down there in that area in over 20 years except to pass through, it’s not what it used to be. At one point it was the place to be and be seen. Now it’s just blah.

I used to live down there, worked at a health food store owned by a gentleman that owned the place for over 25 yrs til he passed about 10 yrs ago. I met Joseph Lowery and Ralph David Abernathy there, both were customers. And sweet as could be to me too.

Maybe it’s because the Europeans come from older, established countries and so they’re more grown up in some ways. America is less than 250 yrs old, and we’ve really only had one big war back in the 1800s that killed off a significant number of people, so we don’t get it. Europe survived WWII and Hitler FFS. What amuses me is they got it from the Simpsons when Willie was espousing what is a satirical view of what many view the French to be. I was talking the other day with my Dad about how the French lost more men at Verdun and the Somme than we have in any of our wars and their experiences in both World Wars is why they’re not exactly gung ho about war. We never had an entire generation of young men wiped out like they did in WWI. We lost a lot of people in the Civil War yes but nothing like WWI where whole villages lost all their young men to the war.

Republicans launch new offensive to take down Donald Trump bit.ly

If they take down Trump, do not a few of the others have to go too?

Like Carson, Cruz, Paul and Rubio. They have all allowed Trump to influence them to some degree.

They continue to think Trump is the problem but what they refuse to admit is they’d have this problem without Trump and they’re going to find that out when Clinton’s campaign plays clips of whoever the nominee is trying to out Trump-Trump.

Man those French are a bunch of pansies. Why aren’t any of them open carrying? // This is why I laugh when I see wingers act like the French are a bunch of wussies. If they were wussies, they’d be wanting to open carry guns to restaurants and cafes.

If they were pansies they would all be under covers at home watching their version of FOX News (if they even have one) listening to their politicians pander bigoted thinking and worried about the next attack to come.

The only way I can see a Romney candidacy happening is if the nomination is hopelessly deadlocked (which won’t be apparent before the New York primary on April 19), and no other candidate acceptable to all factions can be found. Even then, the risk of a third- and/or fourth-party eruption is high.

Yeah that was gray on my beard I just felt. Granted I was 5 that year but damn. But you know this is how I think Republicans understand young people. They tried making Paul Ryan look hip too and all his favorite bands were bands that were pretty mainstream. I am not a big Rage Against the Machine fan but I loved Tom Morello(sp?) telling Ryan flat out that he’s part of the machine they rage against.

There are actually at least six that I’m aware of: Halima Saadi, her sister Houda Saadi, Djamila Houd, Asta Diakité, Mohamed Amine Ibholmobarak, and Kheireddine Sahbi. (Source: theguardian.com)

The terrorists intentionally hit a very diverse part of Paris, as evidenced in this poignant article in the WSJ (not a periodical I usually read, so I was surpised):

At Paris Bistro La Belle Equipe, a Vision of France Is Damaged

PARIS—Most mornings, Hodda Saadi arrived at work before 8 a.m. to open the new bistro La Belle Equipe, where the onetime waitress had become a manager and was soon to become a shareholder.

Then on Friday, Islamist gunmen sprayed the restaurant with bullets, killing 19 people. Ms. Saadi, the French-born daughter of Tunisian immigrants, and several of her friends—including a Mexican woman, a Congolese man and the Muslim partner of the restaurant’s Jewish owner—were slaughtered.

“My boss is a Jew. He was married to a Muslim,” said Elie Renton, a chef at La Belle Equipe, who left the restaurant shortly before the attack. “White, black, Arab—who cares? They were all my friends.” […]
