Good Grief; Now Ben Carson Is Also Saying He “Saw the Film” of Muslims Cheering in New Jersey on 9/11

Untethered from reality
Politics • Views: 82,285

The avalanche of dishonest derp is gaining strength, as GOP presidential candidate Ben Carson co-signs Donald Trump’s totally false claim that “thousands” of American Muslims were seen celebrating in New Jersey after the 9/11 attacks.

Fact: neither Trump nor Carson actually saw any “film” of New Jersey Muslims cheering the attacks, because that film simply does not exist.

The Republican presidential campaign is now completely untethered from reality. They’ll obviously say anything to pander to the craziest and most extreme elements of the right wing base.

Considering all the footage we were able to put together of the planes crashing into the towers on 9-11, we ought to be able to find footage of celebrations. It’s the 21st century, and people tape every celebration these days.

Repeated from below:

There are reports that were never verified/corroborated that people were partying/celebrating 9/11.

There are no confirmed reports, let alone photographic or video evidence showing people in Jersey City or Paterson partying or celebrating the 9/11 attacks.

None.

Considering all the video/photos shot in the NYC metro area in the hours and days after the attacks, that there isn’t a single image, let alone confirmed report shows just how nonsensical Trump’s statements were.

And Carson just dives headlong into a fact-challenged statement that he too saw the same video that doesn’t exist?

Who are these two nitwits getting their advise from ? Carly Fiorina who swears that she saw video that doesn’t exist either?

Its simple really. These people know that not only is there no penalty for lying, its positively harmful to winning the GOP nomination not to lie. The only time Carly was gaining traction in the race was when she was lying her ass off in the debate.

And that’s the point where the block button comes out. If you cite to white supremacist/nationalist sites? You’re done. Toast. Blocked.

But this is the Trump base - and their proclivities are to go to sites that reinforce their worldview.

That’s not just Trump’s problem - it’s the GOP. This is their base. They are going down the rabbit hole and it’s not a good place for the nation.

You can’t. That is a person who refuses to listen to anything that isn’t going to slot into their preset world view. New information that challenges their “knowledge” must be wrong because if it is, in fact, correct, then they are wrong.

All you can do is keep trying to get little bits in, hope that at some point cognitive dissonance starts to kick in, and they at least re-consider their views. One problem now is that it’s so easy to simply get all your news and info from a source pre-selected for your world view.

Rio Rancho Mayor Gregg Hull is asking Rio Rancho residents and businesses to string up blue holiday lights and decor in honor of law enforcement officers.

The city will then accept nominations for the best blue light display.

Nominations should include the specific street address, business information and a photo. The nominations can be emailed to Rose Martinez at romartinez@rrnm.gov no later than Dec. 13, 2015.

The winners will be presented with a proclamation and receive a personal delivery of cookies and hot chocolate from Mayor Hull on Dec. 20, 2015.

Ok, the Muslim population isn’t as big as the African American population, or the Latino population, but if you have to do everything possible to scrape your way to 50%+1, why would you piss off even 1% of the population so that they’ll vote overwhelmingly against you?

Do they really think that this kind of stuff will gin up enough support among conservative whites (without a comparably sized backlash among moderate and/or liberal whites)?

They’re not going to be able to get away with it forever but it’s entirely possible that they could enough in 2020 to keep the state legislatures and thus redistricting in their hands until 2030. Who knows who the candidates will be then and waht the political landscape will be.

CuriousLurker  Nov 23, 2015 • 12:29:11pm

Whoever was saying yesterday (gdf? sergey?) that people are manufacturing fake memories based on stories & events from the time seems most likely to me. IOW, they’re combining the story of the people who were “allegedly seen celebrating” on rooftops with the Israelis who were detained and the celebrating Palestinians.

From the WaPo article:

In Jersey City, within hours of two jetliners’ plowing into the World Trade Center, law enforcement authorities detained and questioned a number of people who were allegedly seen celebrating the attacks and holding tailgate-style parties on rooftops while they watched the devastation on the other side of the river. […]

washingtonpost.com

Really, “tailgate-style parties on rooftops” is what they saw? What an odd way to describe something. I’ve never heard of a “tailgate-style” rooftop party—can anyone please describe for me what that would look like with no tailgate present?

Also, it simply says “a number of people” were detained and questioned, it says NOTHING about the nationality or ethnicity of said people. Of course, it was also only alleged, never proven. Big difference there.

Again, this leads me to believe people have the reports mixed up/combined. Oh, and BTW I believe yesterday someone here said the celebrations were in Gaza—they were not—they were in East Jerusalem, according to Reuters.

I think they believe they can prevail just on angry white voters alone, partly because they’re certain their cause is right, but also because in 2010 and 2014, they actually fucking DID.

They live in a universe separate and apart from our own. They think the country is falling apart, because the rightwing media they are cocooned in tells them unemployment is high, inflation is skyrocketing, millions of Hispanics and thousands of terrorists are crossing an undefended border, businesses are being chocked to death by regulation and Obama green-lighted an Iranian bomb. Is it any wonder they are confident of victory in 2016?

re: #87 HappyWarrior

They’re not going to be able to get away with it forever but it’s entirely possible that they could enough in 2020 to keep the state legislatures and thus redistricting in their hands until 2030. Who knows who the candidates will be then and waht the political landscape will be.

2010 was a non-Presidential year, plus the first midterm election since a black guy got elected, and a bunch of Obama voters either figured they had done all they needed to, OR they were mad they didn’t get a goddam pony, so they stayed home.

2020 is a Presidential year. That makes such a sweep unlikely. But we will be years fighting our way back from 2010.

Oh I agree. Even if Trump was originally mistaken due to a false memory, he should’ve never made such an inflammatory claim without checking his facts first, but as we all know facts don’t matter to these guys. That he’s now doubling down on it and people are buying into it—not to mention the fact that Dr. Opportunist is also jumping on the bandwagon—it will soon become carved-in-stone fact for a certain portion of the population.

Well you can see rooftops if you’re in a higher building. It’s very crowded in Jersey City so buildings are close together (there are approximately 1/4 million people jammed into 21 square miles). That said, you’re correct that it in most cases would be difficult to see what was being done without binoculars, and it would be virtually impossible to hear what was being said unless people were screaming at the top of their lungs.

The other thing is, if all ISIS wanted to do was KILL those people, a bullet to the head is WAY simpler, neater, and quicker than decapitation. And if you just want to kill people, why publish videos of people being killed?

ISIS has been HIGHLY effective at achieving their goal of terrorizing the West, and how many Westerners have they actually killed? Probably under 300, possibly under 200. And yet we have Presidential candidates of one of the major parties demanding we cut off refugees fleeing ISIS, and that we go all in on the ‘Clash of Civilizations’ thing.

Good ol’ Rod Dreher has linked to Steve Sailer and VDARE more than once.

Here is today’s bucket of tasty wingnut tears (Charles…you may want to go over to AmCon and see his crap for yourself. The religious right establishment is starting to take Rod seriously and he is one of the loudest anti-GLBT voices out there)

This is the America that the Social Justice Warriors and their allies in the Establishment (especially media and academia) have created: a Balkanized polity where nobody trusts anybody who is not like them.

You would have to be an absolute fool, or in a position not to care, to be a white person who voiced a non-left opinion about race, sex, gender, or homosexuality these days. Last month, I communicated with a nationally prominent liberal professor who teaches at a prestigious institution, who said that he is extremely careful what he dares to say in class and anywhere on campus, for fear that some student, somewhere, will consider it a microaggression, and file charges against him. Even groundless charges that are ultimately dismissed can consume a professor’s life, and severely damage his career. In a flash this fall, we have seen university after university taken over by fanatics who despise freedom of speech and thought — the core of a university education — and who have learned that the power elite within those communities are paper tigers who can be intimidated into giving them whatever they demand, or close to it.

It has not yet occurred to these weak and unprincipled leaders that the protesters possess the dead-end politics of Ta-Nehisi Coates: construing the problem in such a way as to deny the possibility of any kind of solution. As I pointed out in my blog post on the book, Coates holds that the only reasonable path for black people in America is to quit believing in Dr. King’s vision (“The changes have awarded me a rapture that comes only when you can no longer be lied to, when you have rejected the Dream”). Actually, I’m probably wrong about that: they almost certainly agree with Coates’s politics. Coates just won the National Book Award, a sure sign that his views have been embraced by the Establishment.

White Christian grievance. Of course, Rod also said this last week about the black tape put over pictures at Harvard:

The images are very offensive, for sure, but I don’t for one second believe that this was a true hate crime. I would bet my next paycheck that it was a hoax carried about by SJW provocateurs within the school who have been mounting a campaign against Harvard Law.

Alex Jones wants to know more.

But, Rod thinks the biggest problem today is that we are not going to church enough…and that means, of course…the same church!

This is why denatured, rationalized, happy-clappy Christianity common to our time — both Catholic and Protestant — cannot survive. Felt banners will serve as its burial shroud. In Moralistic Therapeutic Deism, there’s no there there. Similarly, this is why a society built on secularism and individualism, without any meaningful religious glue holding the people together, cannot endure.

If the West is going to endure, it will have to return to its ancestral faith, Christianity, and do so in a serious, sustained way. I believe that it will, but not soon. The future of the West depends on the faithful, on those who really live the religious life, not just play at it. I believe that Orthodoxy will have a role to play in this revival. But the revival will come, one way or another.

The past couple of months, Rod has been extolling a particularly vile book from France called “The Camp of the Saints”. Written in the 70’s (I believe) the book describes a future France that has fallen under shariah law because of the degraded moral condition of the French polity. Basically, the Turner Diaries for France. Rod loves it loves it loves it! Also, he gets to rail about how civilization took a wrong turn after the 30 years War and tried out that whole Enlightenment separation of church and state thing.

This is because the Enlightenment has brought us to the dead-end life of shopping and screwing and the misery of individual sovereignty at which François has arrived….This is not to say that the Enlightenment was all bad, obviously, but only that it has taken us as far as it can, and is now a destructive force, a force that produces people who do not know how to submit to anything beyond their own disordered appetites, including rage.

UPDATE: Forgot to add that in our interview, Vodolazkin referenced a perestroika-era film, Repentance, that he described as relevant to our own time. It’s a film about the Soviet destruction of culture, and its aftermath. In the final scene, an old lady asks a woman standing in a window if the road she is on will take her to the church. No, says the woman.

“What good is a road if it doesn’t lead to church?” says the old woman, and walks on.

Yes. We have been walking this Enlightenment road for far too long, and it has us now in a dark wood.

Rod’s “Benedict Option” (which seems to mean anything and all things to religious right folks…like an ink blot test) is getting serious consideration in those circles. The guy pushing it thinks we were better off culturally in 1650 and thinks we need to rebuild that. Oh…and being a white person is now a major burden because those pesky social justice kids call him names.

Castillo said the federal government is pursuing alien smuggling charges against both of the Mexican nationals who were caught with the group of five Pakistanis and an Afghani.

As for the migrants, the Border Patrol said last week that they had their identities checked against “numerous” law enforcement and national security-related databases. “Records checks revealed no derogatory information about the individuals,” the agency said.

Castillo said guides have the advantage because the undocumented migrants they are smuggling usually have no idea where they are, and he noted cases in which guides have robbed, raped and assaulted the people they are smuggling into the United States. Unfortunately, he said, the crimes rarely reported unless the undocumented migrants happen to get caught.

It does have historical precedent in that there are numerous quotes from various founders to that very effect. Many of the framers of the constitution were against having a standing army at all because of the unsavory reputation so many of them had in history. Also, the meme of the virtuous citizen soldier standing between his home and ‘war’s desolation’ had a powerful myth making effect, even though the militia really only won a single major battle in the Revolution (King’s Mountain, where two of my own ancestors fought)

In reality there is scarce chance that the army could ever be effectively deployed against the American populace at large. Our society has never worked in such a way that it would be feasible.

I have a dive buddy, used to be Air Force Forward Controller. He said that they had a tablet type device they used. Imagine using google earth, zooming in to individual building level, and then designating a target such as “north east corner of this building” by just tapping it. He could also laser designate it. It all went up to a central system and could be assigned to any aircraft in the area.

And that’s just the stuff he could tell me about.

Actually, the US military has rather poor track record with armed insurgencies. Also, in the event of a major conflict at home, you could expect up to a third of your troops would refuse to fight or desert to the other side (no link. This was according to a study I learned about in the early 90s that was commissioned by the Army when the anti Clinton militia movement started getting traction. The study supposedly concluded that some combat units may become combat ineffective due to attrition before a shot was even fired) .

Sure, the idiot over-weight wannabes would die quickly. They did in Iraq also. Then, the real trouble begins when the skilled and smart folks in the insurgency begin hitting back.

I do maintain that the most likely explanation for these rumors are the contemporary reports about 5 “dancing Israelis” on the rooftop of their firm, Urban Moving Systems. They were identified as Palestinians/middle-eastern men in some early reports.

This is almost certainly the source of that WaPo article, and the story later grew in the “Muslim” direction.

(Note that there is an anti-Semitic theory around these Israelis that they knew about 9/11 in advance, which is of course bollocks. Their erratic behavior is however confirmed by both witnesses and their own photos.)

How do you deal with such willful ignorance?

re: #224 Aunty Entity Dragon

It’s not Bill Clinton’s Army:

There are over 1 million military personnel who are on active duty right now. Out of those soldiers, with more than half serving in the US Army, about one-third of them self-identify as a racial minority. The total number of active duty personnel with a racial or ethnic minority status was just over 420,000. This means that the Caucasian population demographic is slightly over-represented in the active duty military right now.

Only 10.5% of officers and 28.2% of enlisted personnel were of a racial or ethnic minority in 1995. In 2012, 21.9% of officers and 31.6% of enlisted personnel were of a minority status.
Hispanics are not listed as a racial minority according to official US military statistics.
11.3%. That’s the total percentage of the active duty force that is of a Hispanic ethnicity.

re: #250 Nyet

I do maintain that the most likely explanation for these rumors are the contemporary reports about 5 “dancing Israelis” on the rooftop of their firm, Urban Moving Systems. They were identified as Palestinians/middle-eastern men in some early reports.

This is almost certainly the source of that WaPo article, and the story later grew in the “Muslim” direction.

(Note that there is an anti-Semitic theory around these Israelis that they knew about 9/11 in advance, which is of course bollocks. Their erratic behavior is however confirmed by both witnesses and their own photos.)

I remember that and I also remember the hysteria on FreeRepublic (fueled by batshit nutcakes like Justin Raimondo) about “Israeli spies” posing as “Art Students” in order to gain access to federal buildings.

I was like WTF ART STUDENTS? If a spy wanted to get access to a federal building they would pose as a JANITOR not an “Art Student”

Where did the info about the Israelis come from anyway, directly from the FBI?

So I see they also cite the Israelis story as a possible cause, even if they, like ADL, seem to downplay their actual behavior, ascribing it to an “antisemitic myth” (which it is not).

Just for the record, from a site that debunks truthers:

911myths.com

It has transcripts of the ABC show:

MARIA: And I could see that they were, like, happy, you know? They—they—they weren’t—they didn’t look shocked to me, you know? They didn’t look shocked. I thought it was very strange. […]
MARIA: You know, they’re laughing. They’re laughing. One of them, I no-ticed, distinctively, put his hand on top of the other guy why they’re filming, on top of his shoulder.
[…]
MILLER: (VO) Sources tell 20/20 the FBI developed film from a camera taken from the Israelis, and that it shows the three on top of the white van were smiling and appeared to be clowning around. The five Israelis were held at this federal jail for allegedly overstaying their visas.

And an article from a NJ newspaper:

An employee of Urban Moving Systems, who would not give his name, said the majority of his co-workers are Israelis and were joking on the day of the attacks. “I was in tears,” the man said. “These guys were joking and that bothered me. These guys were like, ‘Now America knows what we go through.”

That’s three independent sources (a random witness, a co-worker and their own photos). The website also links to hundreds of pages of FBI docs about these five released in 2011, which contain more info, and specifically confirm Miller’s claim about the photos.

The problem is that it is almost impossible to get Americans to do anything communally unless there is a war.

So, War on Terror, War on Drugs, War on Poverty.

Otherwise at least half of the American people would say “No way. Fuck you!” when a policy meant to handle a social problem is proposed.

It just occurred to me that’s why the wingnuts invented ‘War on Christmas’. It was a good way to get all the wingnuts onside.

Has footage of a handful of people in Gaza somehow transformed in Trump and Carson’s minds into “thousands” in New Jersey?
