Simmering racial tensions boiled over yet again on Monday when a small group of white men allegedly shot five people who had been protesting the recent police killing of an African American man in Minneapolis.

The shooting occurred at around 10:41 p.m. Monday night just one block from Minneapolis Police Department’s 4th Precinct, where protesters have held daily demonstrations since the fatal Nov. 15 police shooting of 24-year-old Jamar Clark.

Police announced on Twitter early Tuesday morning that five people had suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, and that officers were searching for three white suspects who had fled the scene.

I hate seeing RT enclosed on the video screen. It bothers me that they might be the only news outlet that caught the footage, which is an indictment against our own media, but I also know it will be used as propaganda by the Russian government against the U.S.

If RT are the only ones with the footage… it’s probably from a different incident on a different day in a different city.

People on the fucking terrorist watch list can buy goddamned guns legally in this country. And that is the doing of wingnuts beholden to the NRA. So they can STFU about ISIS or anyone else until they address that, the ability for domestic abusers to have guns legally and they start calling this shit that happened last night exactly what it is: Domestic Terrorism. Period. This is bullshit.

13
lawhawk  Nov 24, 2015 • 11:56:29am

As I posted downstairs, this was domestic terrorism. It wasn’t a mere random shooting. The victims were targeted specifically because of what they were doing at the time - protesting that black lives matter. The protesters were peacefully demonstrating against police brutality and excessive force incidents. The perpetrators would not let that go - and wanted to send a message that those black lives just don’t matter.

And the perpetrators shot at the crowd to intimidate them and get them to reconsider future protests.

It’s terrorism, and it should be treated as such.

Can’t wait for the usual suspects to claim that this wasn’t racially motivated or some other such excuse for targeting the BLM crowd with gunfire.
A third male is still being sought but we’re starting to learn about who has been arrested so far:

Minneapolis police said they arrested a 23-year-old white man in Bloomington at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday. A second shooting suspect, a 32-year-old Hispanic man, was arrested in south Minneapolis at 12:05 p.m., police said on Twitter. The search for other suspects continues.

Authorities are weighing whether to treat the shooting of five people protesting near the Minneapolis Police Department’s 4th Precinct Monday night as a hate crime, sources familiar with the investigation said Tuesday morning.

Not just a hate crime, but domestic terrorism.

And that nimrod stands up to ISIL by tweeting nonsensical ravings on Twitter.

The President can do more than one thing at a time - he can order the DoD to carry out airstrikes pursuant to set objectives, and do so until such time that the orders change.

Which is basically what the Administration has been doing for months.

The right wing completely whitewashes the President’s efforts, and instead makes it sound like he’s ignoring it (he’s not), that he’s treating the problem as less than serious (he’s not), that he’s burying the issue in favor of global warming (he’s not), etc.

It’s what we’ve come to expect anymore, the city more worried about protecting their cops than they are anything else. Hell, they paid out $5 million to the family before a lawsuit had even been filed. They knew that, if this video got out, the “official story” was going to collapse in on itself. So they tried to buy off the family and are now looking like lying bastards for doing so. But Rahm is involved in this, so look for wingnuts to claim that “liberals protect cops too!” or some derpy shit to excuse the city’s actions.

Looks like they’ve seen it all along.

Details of the video did not begin to surface until April, when the city made the unusual decision to approve the settlement for McDonald’s family even before a lawsuit had been filed.

For 13 months, Emanuel and the city’s attorneys had opposed the release of the video amid ongoing criminal investigations into Van Dyke. After a Cook County judge found the city in violation of the state’s open records law last week and ordered that the video be released, the city pulled an about-face, dropping its court fight and saying it would comply with the order to release the potentially inflammatory video by Wednesday.

Since there is a video of the two wearing masks, making racist statements while holding weapons and stating that they are “locked and loaded” while driving to the protests, investigators, I’m pretty sure that the terrorism charges aren’t going to be downplayed - and given the content of the videos and several online posts by the individuals, they have specifically stated that they are targeting non-whites for violent acts . From the WaPo article about the shooting, it’s under Federal investigation now as well.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and suspect they wanted to suppress the video out of a desire to avoid racial strife. That they went along with the “official record” because protecting Van Dyke seemed the lesser of two evils, rather than releasing the video and putting him on trial with the possibility of acquittal and the subsequent anger over such. That’s what Rahm has been doing since the judge ruled against the city, tried to argue against the video’s release while going around to local leaders and asking them to keep demonstrations peaceful.

Channel 5 NBC Chicago article from May 27, 2015:
Missing Minutes From Security Video Raises Questions

Chicago police officers deleted footage from a security camera at a Burger King restaurant located fewer than 100 yards from where 17-year old Laquan McDonald was shot and killed, according to a Chicago-area district manager for the food chain.

snip

The 86-minutes of missing video runs from 9:13 p.m. to 10:39 p.m., according to the lawyers for McDonald’s family. He was shot at approximately 9:50 p.m.

snip

After the shooting, according to Jay Darshane, the District Manager for Burger King, four to five police officers wearing blue and white shirts entered the restaurant and asked to view the video and were given the password to the equipment. Three hours later they left, he said.

The next day, when an investigator from the Independent Police Review Authority asked to view the security footage, it was discovered that the 86 minutes of video was missing.

In a statement, a spokesman for the IPRA said: “We have no credible evidence at this time that would cause us to believe CPD purged or erased any surveillance video.”

But according to Darshane, both the cameras and video recorder were all on and working properly the night of the shooting. So what happened? One of the detectives, he believes, deleted the files.

good grief…

re: #67 Bill and Opus for 2016!

From the WaPo article about the shooting, it’s under Federal investigation now as well.

washingtonpost.com

Dylann Roof had his online ramblings that the black race was out to destroy white folks and take over, and he specifically told his victims he was killing them because of their perceived “crimes” against white folks and left one of those in the church alive just to pass on his ramblings. All that was known within hours of the shooting, but the FBI still made a point to tell the media it wasn’t pursuing the case as a terrorist incident, and Roof has not been charged with terrorism.

Appearing Tuesday at a foreign policy think tank that heard from Democrat Hillary Clinton earlier this month, Governor Christie touted his experience pursuing terrorist plots as a federal prosecutor and he again chastised President Obama, saying the president does not understand Americans’ concerns about Syrian refugees.

“We cannot allow ourselves at a time of great peril to put ourselves at greater risk,” said Christie, who has told Obama he does not want the state to receive any more refugees.

Christie also shared personal stories with the Council on Foreign Relations audience about the 9/11 attacks, including how he wondered what he would tell their children as he waited five hours to hear from his wife, who worked near the World Trade Center.

“I fear this administration and many parts of this country have forgotten” about the attacks,” Christie said. “I can’t forget because terrorism is not theoretical for me.” He criticized Obama and Congress for weakening the law that allowed the government to gather information about phone calls to identify possible terrorist plots, saying that the intelligence community was being demoralized.”

It just gets worse.

Fetzer speculates Amazon banned the book due to its “extensive, thorough, and detailed” analysis breaking down how

the December 14, 2012 incident was likely a staged government psy-op

carried out with the purpose of clamping down on civil liberties.

If the shooters had been Muslim, they’d already be in federal custody and you can be damned sure they’d be charged with terrorism regardless of their ethnicity.

I was just thinking about Dylan Roof also: Let’s say his name was Daoud Rauf instead. Also, let’s make it a synagogue in NYC that he’d shot up instead of a black church in the South, and add that he’d screamed “Allahu akbar!” as he shot people. Let’s also say that instead of a racist/white supremacist manifesto Daud had written an antisemitic/jihadist manifesto that ranted about evil Zionists. Now hold that scenario in your head for a second.

Do you suppose he’d be charged with murder, a federal hate crime, or terrorism?

For the record, Roof is being charged with the first two.

[…]

Here is a New Mexico story for Thanksgiving.

On Good Friday in 1986, Governor Toney Anaya started a political wildfire by declaring New Mexico a “sanctuary state” for refugees seeking political asylum from the killing fields of El Salvador and Guatemala. Anaya argued that the Reagan administration discriminated against refugees from Central America by declaring them “economic refugees,” denying their persecution and deporting them while treating European refugees with more deference.

[…]

We cannot shirk our responsibility for the instability we have produced elsewhere in the world. Our policies of regime change, bombing countries into smithereens and slaughtering innocents in non-declared wars with no definable end, produce the very chaos that breeds terrorists like standing water breeds mosquitoes.

We are bound not only by international law to assist refugees, but by human decency. Accepting refugees is reasonably safe - and the duty of a moral society.

It is also consistent with the spirit of Thanksgiving.

Cheerfully Insane National Review Music Video Is OH SWEET JESUS!

For reasons beyond the human ken, the National Review thought a great way to celebrate its 60th anniversary was with this video: an animated all-singing, all-dancing history of the modern conservative movement, at least from the moment that William F. Buckley decided that he would make a magazine.

You know a “song” is going to be excruciating when the very first lines are: “It was 1955, bad ideologies were alive / and the administrative state grew unabated.” Something like that makes you long for the unadorned simplicity and verve of the lyrics to “Sugar, Sugar” by The Archies. […]

And then he allegedly attempted to reload his weapon.

wow.

Which is several seconds more than the time it took the Cleveland cops to shoot and kill Tamir Rice.

And Cleveland and the CPD still haven’t taken responsibility for that either.

welp, the pellet stove shut itself off.
I checked and the GFCI had tripped. Waited a bit, pressed the reset button on the GFCI outlet, light came on. Control panel on the pellet stove is still dark.
MrBWS will be home tomorrow.
Good thing the forecast for the next week has temps above freezing while this gets sorted out.

My new love affair with the pellet stove has taken a huge hit…

Come on now. ‘Yummy Yummy’ was worlds better than that swill.

It scans like it was written by an 80 year old man. I’d be ashamed to say I wrote that.

I hate that song. It goes on and on and on and it has no tune.

Apparently Van Dyke’s wife tried to get past the rules barring campaigns for persons facing criminal prosecution by not using her husband’s name to solicit funds.

He’s only being held until the judge views the video himself. Expect him to be out on bond within 48 hours.

Many years ago my folks had a propane fired floor furnace that did not require any power to keep burning. The thermostat was self powered by the pilot light burning. I do not know if a furnace like that is still available or if you have access to propane. Also you might find an oil fired stove that does not require power.

I quit using propane heat years and years ago when the price got outrageous.
Push come to shove, I’ll just have MrBWS swap out the pellet stove and put the old woodstove back in. Even though that is a PITA, at least it doesn’t require anything other than firewood (of which I have plenty left over from last winter) and time/energy (I’m admittedly not pleased to deal with that since the pellet stove has made me so complaisant).
