Pawn of the Oppressor  Nov 26, 2015 • 4:13:19pm

You know, I have never once scored any kind of “deal” on “Black Friday”. In the old days, when it was just a one-day shopping psychosis, I’d hear legends of cheap TVs and cameras purchased at re-damned-diculous discounts, but not anymore. Now the stores tell you what to get a week beforehand through social media. I was sour on the idea then, and I still detest it now.

(That said, if I needed anything, I appreciate the amazon link.)

My holiday was a bust. My plans all fell through for various reasons and even my Hail Mary play - a late run to the store for a rotisserie chicken and a can of cranberry sauce - did not work out, as the stores are all closed now. So, for me, Thanksgiving was just a Thursday off spent over-eating the cobbler I made for an ex-girlfriend’s family gathering, that I was too sick to go to this morning.

Oh well.

The sleeper hit of dinner was Brussels sprouts with squash and onions, plus a balsamic glaze and pomegranate seeds, based loosely on this recipe.

mr. klys finally started to help with the champagne bottle, which was a good thing based on the current typo rate. I have switched to water until it is time for dessert (read: we are hungry again).

I’m really lucky (and thankful) that I have a yearly invite to a friend’s house for dinner. It’s almost always the same group of 8-10 people and the meal is always the same wonderfully prepared basics. His pies are legendary, and this is the holiday where he goes all out to make everything perfect. It was a really nice get together.

Amazon also has a deal called AmazonSmile where a portion of your purchases is donated to a charity of your choice. I signed up to donate to ‘Planned Parenthood Minnesota North Dakota South Dakota’ a while back when republicans were screaming to defund PP.

Interesting article on the dynamics of retail shopping on Thanksgiving and Black Friday. The article contains this interesting tidbit:

One of my favorite retail examples is B&H Photo in New York City. They close and don’t even take online orders on Jewish holidays. That’s an extreme example, but B&H has been incredibly firm on their point of view of taking care of their people and honoring those holidays. And you can’t help but respect them for that. It’s one of the things that attracts a good number of people to their brand.

B&H dedication to their religious principles DOES NOT INCLUDE nosing into their employees’ health insurance. When my daughter worked there, B&H health insurance covered birth control and abortion services.

Feline Fearless Leader  Nov 26, 2015 • 5:58:32pm

Good evening Lizards and I hope everyone had a safe, happy, and comfortable Thanksgiving. Our celebration was a joint dinner with my brother’s neighbor - twelve people (all adults twenty or older), with piles of various foods and drinks. Standards such as turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, squash, The Sacred Cylinder*, and also spanikopita. Four different kinds of pie available for dessert in addition to baklava.

I declared an exemption for my new diet regime.

Played euchre after dinner and now back home watching the last football game of the evening.

Pre-dinner activity was shifting wood from the farther woodpiles closer to the house. Was a very nice day out for such work. Now getting windy and colder with another very bright moon.

32
thedopefishlives  Nov 26, 2015 • 6:01:50pm

re: #31 Feline Fearless Leader

Our celebration was probably a good 20+ people; exact numbers fluctuate depending on the exact moment of sampling. Mrs. Fish has a very large immediate family, and the majority of them actually showed up this year. There was plenty of food for everyone, since most of the family can cook at least one thing. And there was pie. Lots and lots and lots of pie. Mmm, pie.

I had lunch with my family for Thanksgiving, which was my mom’s first meal out in two weeks and my dad’s first in 6 weeks. My sister has come to town for Thanksgiving, so we were all together today for the first time in a long while. Then I was able to head out to the suburbs to spend some time with my extended family, and I also enjoyed that.

I can honestly say I’m having my first genuinely good week this fall.

I was seriously productive this morning, feeling fine. Got the chores done and snuggled in with my boys and guest dog to watch Jessica Jones and play with yarn. Figured all the weather changes were triggering a bit of allergy asthma when my lungs suddenly started to squeeze up a bit. Then my throat started feeling scratchy and my chest really started getting congested. That’s when I had to call my friends and cancel our Thanksgiving for tomorrow. I’m a bio bomb.

At least I have wine. *wheeze*

I would have to disagree with that. I have 2 uncles who both used to run bakeries and they would sort of compete to bring the best pies and cakes and stuff. There ws always enough pie for everyone to bring one home with them.

They are both retired now, so now we have reasonable levels of pie.

See, due to the size of Mrs. Fish’s family and the fact that many of them are still children or younger people, we tend to pick up diseases at major family get-togethers, rather than spreading them. I don’t understand why people don’t keep their little biological WMD’s at home when they’re sick, but not everyone can be prudent and respectful, I suppose.

It’s rare as hen’s teeth for me to criticize how Israeli police handle taking down would-be terrorists, but this incident from earlier this week resembles resembles Jason Van Dyke’s summary execution of Laquan McDonald in Chicago last fall far too much for me to see it and not say something:

Shocking moment two Israelis shoot Palestinian teenager dead and wound another after they had stabbed a pensioner with scissors in Jerusalem

Yes, its the Daily Mail but the video is not ambiguous (its behind a spoiler tag):

The first shots to stop the attack were justified, but the fatal shots to the girl who was killed were clearly fired after she was on the ground and posed no further threat. That’s murder, even if the person killed is a thug or a terrorist.

Back from the shop owners house for T-day. Had a marvelous time, him and his wife, both their kids (19 and 25), his sons GF, Owners SIL and her girl friend, and a batch of random assorted dogs in all sizes and colors.

Great food, great conversation, great time. His SIL is an artisan woodworker, so we hit it off great. As he said “You know people are passionate about things when they have a 10 minute discussion on the pros and cons of various dust collection systems”. Watched Dallas get stomped on, ate too much pie (is there such a thing?).

My big dog has no problem with the rain. My little dog, on the other hand, really doesn’t like it, unless it involves a leash and an umbrella. He hadn’t been outside long enough to poop, so he and I went on a walk until he took care of things. There are some very large puddles out there.

Dallas had record setting rain back in May, almost set a record for continuous days without rain over the summer, and, with the rain expected this weekend, will set a record for the wettest year since records have been kept in the 1800s. There’s the evidence for climate change that most wingers will not understand.

On the recommendations of lizards, I’ve been watching Jessica Jones and The Expanse. I’m up to episode 3 in JJ and am liking it a lot, so thanks for the reco! The first ep of The Expanse was OK, but it took me a while to figure out who is where and how they all connect together. The sets and costumes are quite decent. It inspired me to buy the first novel in the Expanse series to my Kindle. I need some space opera to offer me some respite from the tedium of reading the second book in Game of Thrones.

I’ve decided I don’t need to read GoT. I paid for book 2, so I’ll try to finish it. But the later books, meh. There are too many other books to read, and life is short.

Jessica Jones in really fantastic. Acting, scripting, cameras. Also a surprisingly good depiction of trauma and PTSD.

The Expanse is good reading. Haven’t got the fifth one yet, but the other four are enjoyable, tense, and do a great job of building a solar system-wide humanity. I’ll be interested to see what a show version looks like.

Never have finished book 1. Really not that good as far as I’m concerned. Overwrought, meh political scenario (War of the Roses? Really? OH, I did finish “Ancillary Mercy” by Anne Leckie the other day. Book three of the Imperial Radch space opera trilogy. Now there’s a series of books I’ll recommend to anyone.

Ancillary Justice - stunning first novel, won Hugo & Nebula for best novel.
Ancillary Sword - not as good, like most center books in a series but set up
Ancillary Mercy - which is a delightful finish to a very thought provoking spin on the time worn tropes of Space Opera.

If you have that kind of taste in books, there are few finer.

Now off to the hotel. Later lizards.

re: #119 William Lewis

The Ancillary books are on my wishlist. I’ll get to them eventually.

The HBO GoT series is worth a shot. The writers have managed to condense Martin’s longwinded prose into compelling drama. The acting is very good, and the costumes and sets are convincing. I was hooked as soon as I watched the first installment. I’m trying to ignore the plot holes by suspending disbelief.

The books, though … sheesh. In my younger days, I probably would have waded through the exquisitely detailed descriptions of clothing, weaponry, food, family banners and sigils, and castles, but now, I just want the plot to move along so I can do other things. I can understand the challenge Martin has undertaken, to weave together several different subplots and timelines with the final goal of bringing them all to a mutual (and satisfactory) end. But I’m sure it could be done without all the fiddly little details. His universe is not that much different from medieval Europe, so he could quite literally skip all the descriptions of clothing and food and get down to business.

But some people adore this kind of meticulous attention to detail, I guess.

Me, I’ll stick to the TV series.

So, apparently the latest talking point out of Minneapolis, courtesy of the Minneapolis PD and via Breitbart, is that the BLM “thugs” basically presented such a danger to the poor white guys that they had no choice but to shoot in self-defense. The source of the allegations? One of the shooters called an officer who was his buddy from high school. He claims the five of them were down there to live-stream the protest, that they didn’t mean for anything violent to happen, that the protesters harassed and then attacked them, and they opened fire to defend themselves.

Daleiden has until Dec. 4 to produce the ordered information. Meanwhile, Chuck has separately invoked the California reporter’s shield law, a hearing of which is scheduled for Dec. 23, IIRC.

It would be very interesting if Daleiden’s information revealed that Chuck was one of the CMP associates who received materials from the CMP’s infiltration into NAF operations. The RHrealitycheck article notes Chuck’s conflicting stories of how he obtained the clandestine videos, and NAF’s attorneys have also noted the close friendship between him and Daleiden. My suspicious mind says this possibility is why CCJ and DD are trying to keep this connection from being discovered, but it’s only a suspicion.

“Where will he go next, this phantom from another time, this resurrected ghost of a previous nightmare - Chicago? Los Angeles? Miami, Florida? Vincennes, Indiana? Syracuse, New York? Anyplace, everyplace, where there’s hate, where there’s prejudice, where there’s bigotry. He’s alive. He’s alive so long as these evils exist. Remember that when he comes to your town. Remember it when you hear his voice speaking out through others. Remember it when you hear a name called, a minority attacked, any blind, unreasoning assault on a people or any human being. He’s alive because through these things we keep him alive.”

He’s reading from the wingnut playbook. How many times in the past have we seen them screech that a Republican shouldn’t apologize, he should either stick to his guns or even demand an apology from his accusers? Trump’s just giving them what they want.

Anything to distract from the fact that Trump is entirely unqualified for the office he is campaigning for. But that is not why people support him. They hate politicians, hate government and want someone who would destroy everything just to express their rage.

Obligatory quote of the thoughtworthy epilogue of said episode:

This one from the first meeting with mystery man:

Let us start by your learning what are the dynamics of a crowd.
How do you move a mob, mr. Vollmer? How do you excite them? How do you make them feel as one with you?
Join them first, mr. Vollmer.
Join them? Yes, when you speak to them, speak to them as if you were a member of the mob. Speak to them in their language, on their level.
Make their hate your hate.
If they are poor, talk to them of poverty.
If they are afraid, talk to them of their fears.
And if they are angry, mr. Vollmer, if they are angry, give them objects for their anger.
But most of all, the thing that is most of the essence, mr. Vollmer, is that you make this mob an extension of yourself.
Say to them things like things like “they call us hatemongers.
“They say we’re prejudiced.
“They say we’re biased.
“They say we hate minorities- minorities.
“Understand the term, neighbors: “Minorities.
“Should i tell you who are the minorities? “Should i tell you? “We! We are the minorities!” That way, mr. Vollmer. Start it that way.

Speaking of wingnut gunfire, I just ran across this perfect example of what I’m going to call a “Trump Gun”:

Gold plated and engraved custom 1911 from DL Sports, not much other info on it. Serial number 4 but I don’t know how many they made total or if they’re a custom made-to-order pistol. No price is mentioned either.

Source. Given his gaudy penthouse, this pistol would actually fit in well there.

Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 prime lens. Instant rebate at BH Photo brings it down to $99 which is just about as good as it gets for an amateur photographer who misses the old nifty 50’s. I have no doubt this will be my nearly only lens.

They’re moving the goalposts. Trump’s original lie, which is still a complete lie, was that

Kovaleski’s article does not prove that original statement in any way, shape or form.

The police better charge those White Supremacists with attempted murder. Self-defense is a stupid justification for provoking people with violence and then shooting point blank at them when all you had to do is leave the scene. They intentionally went to the BLM protest to harass protesters. They made a video in which they made racist slurs and talked about what they were going to do.

No charges would just add to the perception that cops protect White people at all costs.

Trump added the extra bits when he doubled down the next day:

In an interview on ABC’s “This Week” the following morning, Trump stood by his story, saying he watched the scene unfold on television.

“I know they don’t like to talk about it, but it was well covered at the time,” he said. “There were people over in New Jersey that were watching it — a heavy Arab population that were cheering as the buildings came down. Not good.”

Thinking DD would be forthcoming about who those infiltrators are, legal ramifications or not, is fool’s folly, IMHO. There’s no way he’d admit that CCJ was intimately involved.

Right, and now they’re reduced to lying about Kovaleski’s article in order to sustain Trump’s new lie that the allegations of celebration described in his article referred to Muslims at all. And they have to do this because Serge corrected him, then Trump go mad and mocked him, and now Trump is lying about that. It’s a never ending iterative stream where each generation of lie spawns new lies.

The judge has pretty much shut down every legal argument DD’s lawyers have proposed so far. There is still an appeal to the 9th Circuit in the wind that might save DD from divulging that information to NAF’s attorneys. If the appeal fails, he’ll be in contempt of court if he fails to comply with the judge’s orders.

I want to point out that given the existence of that video, Stand Your Ground laws and self-defense in general should be right out the window for anyone seen in that video. It has long been accepted that self-defense may not be claimed if the person using deadly force went “looking for trouble”, that meaning in this case that he went into what he knew to be a potentially dangerous situation intending to provoke a confrontation.

Originally, the “looking for trouble” provision and related rules on provocation were intended to prevent self-defense law from being used as an end-run around prohibitions on dueling. Nowadays it is used in cases like this, where assholes went to start a confrontation in order to justify shooting black people.

It makes me wonder if Trump has any staff preparing his remarks or talking points, because he gives the impression that he’s winging it whenever he speaks. And, if he does has such staff members, I’m sure he ignores everything they tell him, probably accompanied with his usual bombast and bluster. I found an older M2HB .50 BMG and other lizards have helped with ammo. We stopped the zombies cold. .50 cal rounds destroyed a zombie’s brain with one shot, then they come out the back of its head and slam the zombie right behind back hard into the ground. Ma Deuce turned a mass of walkers into scattered crawlers in short order. Then we use rifle fire to finish the crawlers off.

I enjoyed a good stroll through the amazon black friday deals. I like how certain items appear near each other…a gentle electric hair remover/exfoliator two items away from an orbital polisher - just in case the rechargeable hand held unit doesn’t do the job.

There was also a nice axe - 2999 reviews mostly about its usefulness in the zombie apocalypse since nobody really cuts wood anymore as wood burning fireplaces aren’t even allowed in many communities. And of course, wireless motion detectors. Those will go great in front of one’s apartment/house/trailer where there’s almost constant foot traffic. Maybe if you lived 20 miles from town and were worried about police raids of your meth lab, but seriously…who needs that shit?

So, I did my annual dance with the black Friday devils at the Bergen County malls and roadways. Foggier than most (we had dense fog warnings though most of the morning). Not as big crowds as usual, mostly because I think people are doing more shopping online plus you can get as good a deal online or before today. Also, sales aren’t nearly as blockbuster as they seem at first blush.

Sure, there’s a few things that get you to turn heads, but how many tvs can you buy?

Clothes will probably be a better buy after Christmas as winter seems to have taken a holiday and stores will take a bath on merchandise. Durable goods (fridges, washing machines, etc., are probably a good deal depending on make/model), but again, how many of those can you need/get every year.

Camera gear? Well, yeah, there’s probably some good deals out there, but it might actually be better to wait until the new models are scheduled to come out.

Oh, but I did learn one thing. Black Friday at 10am is probably the best time to go to Ikea. No crowds to speak of.

Anyone have any recommendations for nice-ish cameras? My mom decided today that she wants one. She takes a lot of good pictures with her iPhone 6, but now she wants to be able to do a little more. I am thinking maybe $500-$700? Can you get a camera that you can add lenses to for that?

Hey numbnuts, my mother and my mother-in-law had long careers in retail. THEIR JOB was understanding how sales work. Costume designers don’t usually do that as part of their job. They. Design.

My mother and my mother-in-law NEVER bought used garage sale shit.

If she’s wanting to go beyond an iPhone camera, I would recommend something like this:
amazon.com wife has an older version. It autofocuses, and a lot of the pictures she takes are comparable to my mom’s dlsr. It’s currently on for $167.

That guy is so nuts. Is it his upbringing that taught him that debt is the worst thing ever? Are businesses evil when they have billions of dollars of liabilities on their books?

Also, does he even know how a modern economy functions (through consumption)?

Those who grew up during the Depression or in post WWII Europe learned that saving is the ultimate virtue and a moral imperative. Which is why a lot of Germans are very annoyed at the current flat interest rates - there is almost no economic impetus to save.

There are some good kit deals out there if you’re looking for a DSLR, or good deals for superzoom (all in ones). You may want to get into a camera store and test out Canon, Nikon, Minolta, etc., or even Sony or Panasonic to see how they are and to compare features. If she’s got a similar hand size to your own, see how it feels in your hand and how the menus operate. Does the LCD screen swivel? Is that important (might be useful for selfie/type shots).

All will have similar types of menus and features, but the ergonomics will vary. Heck, even within the camera lines you’ll have different hand-feel.

Maybe consider a tripod (mini/gorillapod) too?

Hope that’s helpful.

My two bits (as an old person) is that you might want to stay away from something with interchangable lenses. If it becomes complicated to use, she may lose interest and go back to the iPhone.

Panasonic LX-7. Small, pocketable, very “fast” lens so it takes good pictures indoors without needing to use the flash. It’s got a range of pro features that can be learned but its basic snapshot setting works very well. It has a limited zoom range but that can be an advantage in some situations.

Interesting, a price bit above point and shoot but below most DSLR. I’d not get a DSLR for a person stepping up from a phone anyway. Mirrorless might be perfect. Yes they can change lenses but with a good general use lens to start with it’s a long time before one starts thinking to get another lens. I happen to have a pro Canon bias, but Sony and Nikon are both very unlikely to disappoint. Mirrorless tends to let a person run on auto pilot or get creative if they wish. Wireless for easy uploads.

Yes, but that does not mean it’s necessarily a good idea for a gift.

Is your mother the type of person who will want a camera with changeable lenses? Such cameras tend to be larger, bulkier.

Will she want a traditional optical viewfinder?

Will she use a tripod?

Will she want to have to deal with removable media compatibility, such as with different memory cards?

People are much more likely to take images with a camera that is easily portable - hence the use of phone cameras.

There are many very useful small cameras out there with retractable lenses that can easily fit into a jacket pocket or a purse. People are more likely to carry one of those around.

Also, rape and sexual abuse has a significant “iceberg effect”, it’s estimated that as many as 9 out of 10 cases or rape or sexual abuse go unreported in the US.
It’s a little better in Sweden, but still a significant amount (IIRC, 7 or 8 out of 10) never report.

As a side note, it’s one of the reasons why Sweden has an apparent high rape statistic, victims are more likely to report than elsewhere, another reason is a legislation change back in ‘05, a third is how rapes are counted in the Swedish justice system (they don’t “lump together” acts as is often the case in other jurisdictions).

Not Rapey Muslims as is the party line over at the right.

Conservative? = BAD DECISIONS

It has to be that way for the wingnuts.

You see to them FREEDUM! is all about choices. FREEDUM! means the choice with the positive outcome is always obvious and always easy. So if it turns out that good choices are not always easy and not always obvious and can be changed by external factors then FREEDUM! does not exist.

Since, in the wingnut mind, FREEDUM! does exist then if people had bad things happen to them it is because those people didn’t make the easy and obvious choice.
