More Updates on San Bernardino Mass Shooting

US News • Views: 50,214

This has been yet another terrible day of mass gun violence in America (and police are still searching for one of the suspects as I write this), and I have to admit I’m thoroughly sick and tired of GOP politicians uttering pious-sounding words about “prayers” for the victims in San Bernardino, while obstructing and subverting every attempt to get control of America’s huge gun violence problem. These people are the worst kind of hypocrites.

Meanwhile, the 9/11 Truther who interviewed leading GOP candidate Donald Trump earlier today immediately started spreading his usual poisonous conspiracy theory rhetoric.

UPDATE at 12/2/15 5:40:00 pm by Charles Johnson

At a police press briefing just now, it was announced that one of the shooters killed in the shootout at the SUV was a female. Both of them were dressed “assault-style clothing.”

Dear wingnut politicians:

Pray as though everything depended on God. Work as though everything depended on you.

Prayer is not the problem here. The nature of the GOP candidates, inaction on gun laws, obstructionism on gun laws and egos are the problems.

It’s not the praying that is the problem. It’s the failure to do anything to change the status quo.

Of course. Like always, they make every tragedy about them. Pray all you want but actually support doing something which is what none of the GOP candidates and office holders are proposing after this.

I do agree with that. I’m fine with prayer. I do have and I know you do have a problem with people who are in a position to influence power just offering empty crap.

We’ve been praying for the victims after these damned things for years, decades even. They keep happening, and more frequently. So, go ahead and pray, but don’t expect it to do anything if that’s all we do.

It’s a lazy way out. Prayer is fine, but action is what makes the world go. Just like shitty actions today resulted in horrifying results, so can positive and problem solving actions have positive results. There are things that can be done, what is lacking is the WILL to do it. Because politicians and their pundits and cronies value their careers and bank accounts more than they do life. They aren’t pro life, they’re pro their own fucking wealth. Period. They care about nothing more than enriching themselves and furthering their careers. If they cared about anything else, we’d see results. Period. There’s no excuse for this shit anymore. None.

I have no problem with praying in private as the bible instructs. (or in public for religions that require it) My issue is prayer used to put on a show to manipulate people. The doing nothing is the larger problem though.

Two things:

First, San Bernardino has basically taken a Shall Issue position with Concealed Carry. It’s mostly an exurb and fairly rural county (though in the desert).

Second, I just found out that a guy I grew up with was the first SB Sheriff’s Deputy at the scene today. He’s not one of the injured, as far as I’ve heard so far. But I’m going to have little tolerance for bullshit on this story.

It certainly can be used to hide behind and to further delay or do nothing at all.

Let’s say some of the fundies claim it’s all in God’s hands, and gun laws don’t stop the evil so gun laws are worthless. It’s God’s plan. Pray to God.

If that thinking enters it is at least problematic.

I’m listening to KABC channel 7 and they’re talking about a nine-minute video they have on their site about how to deal with an active shooter situation when you’re out in public.

I hate that I live in a country where I need to have a plan to get out of a shooting situation if I go out in public.

I HATE IT.

(For the record, I had to undergo “active shooter” training at work earlier this year, and I work in a secure building where I have to badge through a gate, two turnstiles and a door to get into my office. This was new training for 2015.)

This is one of the reasons I’m no longer “conservative”. It’s the lies.

Spread a lie that the shooters were Muslim. Lie that being armed would have somehow prevented this. Lie that it’s not a problem. Lie to yourself, lie, lie, lie, always reinforcing the “Fuck You” policy that’s become the right wing’s controlling principle.

I’m fine with individuals praying honestly but these politicians who are in actual positions through either being in elected office or seeking it need ot offer more than prayer. Very nearly three years ago—damn near three fcking goddamn years ago!—Adam Lanza shot up the Sandy Hook Elementary School, and we all were supposed to learn something. What we learned is that this country’s insane attachment to its firearms is well-nigh unbreakable.

Less than a week ago, Robert Dear shot up a Planned Parenthood facility, and we were all supposed to learn something. What we learned is that the people who deal in inflammatory mendacity for their own political advantage are well-nigh unshakable.

No matter what “motive” ostensibly was behind what can legitimately be called the “attack” in San Bernardino, there is no question that there is murder in this country’s heart now, not buried very deeply at all any more, and that there are people who are more than willing to act on it. This is a ferocious loss of faith in democracy, in the project of creating a viable political commonwealth.

It is aided and abetted by a revolting firearms fetish that is exploited by cheap and miserable politicians. I don’t care anymore about pointing out who may or may not have blood on their hands. It’s knee-deep, and we’re all in it.

Remember that town in Georgia that wanted to fine people for NOT having guns? That’s the kind of shit you’re talking about. I choose NOT to have a gun. I don’t like guns by my own admission and I’ve explained to many of you why already. I don’t want to own a gun. A gun doesn’t make me feel any more safe. I don’t knock the individual who wants a gun for his home but I do have a problem with that guy who needs his gun everywhere and cries like a little baby when a business owner who rightfully has concerns about an individual having a gun in his place of busienss tells them “No, sir you can’t bring your gun here.” I have free speech but if I went into a place of business and started blabbing my mouth off about my opinions, it would probably piss off the owner and he’d be within his rights to ask me to leave. Same thing with business owners and guns. Your home is one thing although alot of these fuckwads test me there too since they put their own children in danger because they’re so responsible.

Not that he’s in any way connected with reality, but re-loading for a practiced shooter takes a couple of seconds, tops, anyway. Lots of commando wannabes practice this shit for fun, so even his idiot followers should be able to set him straight.

The whole thing is just weird. California historically is a hotbed for serial killers and has plenty of loose nuts, true, but three people preparing bombs and heavy gunfire against the city of San Bernardino specifically? Even gubbermint-hater whack-jobs from Arizona trying to start a war doesn’t explain that.

There was an under reported incident about two years ago of sniper attacks on electrical infrastucture north of Los Angeles at commercial locations. The implication in what I read was that a professional was involved who scouted the locations and set up a sniper nest with good fields of fire and egress. There are some real, real weird wingnut enclaves in California and they send red state wet dreams to the legislature.

Not only that, when I got into my car this morning, when I turned the key, I noticed the motor started running. Then….when I turned it the other way….it stopped.

I started it again, and when I put the transmission in “D,” the car went forward, but when I put it in “R,” it went backward…

When I turned the steering wheel to the right, the car went right. BUT, when I turned it to the left, guess what happened?

Agreed, but if these are reports filtering out from witnesses on the scene, they wouldn’t have known that. What they would have seen could have been “Oh, so-and-so had a small spat with blank and left, and then they came back with some other people and started shooting.” Not knowing, of course, that so-and-so had actually planned this and merely used that as an excuse or a “one last chance” or whatever bullshit was in their head to shoot up a holiday party.

I was not in the military, but I was a firefighter for 8 years. (Before you actual vets jump on me for the analogy, hear me out…) One thing I found out was that you never knew how someone was going to react in burning building until they actually went into one. The point here is that training is not just learning how to pick up the hoseline and “put the wet stuff on the red stuff”. The only way you can get an idea of what its like is actual, as-close-to-the-real-thing-as-possible training. I’m willing to bet large sums of money that its the same thing for actual, we’re-getting-shot-at combat. No, I’d say it’s most likely even more so the case for actual combat. Fire doesn’t shoot back; it’s simply obeying the laws of physics.
My point is simply giving people guns will NOT determine whether and how someone will react in a crisis situation. If they’re not trained properly, they can (and many times have) make the situation worse.

Having shot a revolver at a target just a few meters away, taking a proper stance and using a two-handed grip, even cocking it so that trigger pull was light and short, I still sprayed lead everywhere. With three shooters with rifles, if your average person pulled out a handgun and started shooting, his life would be very short and very exciting.

And as I mentioned, seemingly with pipe bombs ready to go. Weird it is.

This is a good question. We have drills at work. I have a knife in my desk drawer (for cutting fruit). There are rolling steel carts in my cubicle area that would be useful barricades.

I think about this a lot.

[Embedded content]

When I lived in Illinois, we did this with the ISP SWAT team for my tiny town newspaper office in ~1990.
Part of it involved me drawing up a detailed map of our building and labeling every single room/area with who should be there at various times during the day.

There was that guy and his nephew or relation of some kind. In DC area? Shooting people randomly.

I’ve thought about it too. I’d probably hide under a cubicle desk or try to dash into the monitoring room, or beyond that, into the server room. Both of which are also badge access. The server room has lots of metal in it, obviously.

We never heard of a elementary school mass shooting of children situation until recently.

We never heard of a bible study mass shooting until recently.

We never of a rock concert mass shooting until recently.

If you remember the Boomtown Rats song “I Don’t Like Mondays”, it’s about a teenager who opened fire at elementary school kids in California in 1980 or so. When asked why she did it she said she didn’t like Mondays. Then there’s the elementary school aged children who opened fire on their classmates and teachers in Jonesboro, AR. That was in the late 90s I think. The police were horrified first when they found out who the shooters were, and later when the kids were disappointed they didn’t get pizza for dinner.

A quick recap of the police presser:

Two suspects, a male and a female, were in the SUV that was involved in the police shootout. Both are confirmed dead. They were wearing “tactical” gear and armed with assault-style rifles and handguns. A third person was detained not far from where the shootout took place, though it is unclear if that person was involved with the other two suspects or is linked to the crimes.

The search for other suspects has been wrapped up. EDIT: To clarify, the search for the suspects involved in the police shootout is over, but the police are searching and investigating to see if the suspects had help from others.

The police are now searching a home they believe are connect with the male/female suspects right now.

Someone left the party at the IRC, though it is unclear if that person was involved in the shooting there.

I think I caught the main points of the presser.

That would only tell the cops who they are, something they obviously already know. It would not authorize them to release the names of the dead suspects to the public. This is a matter of legal procedure in California and most other states.

It’s possible that the house was chosen at random by the suspects to hide from the police and is not connected to the suspects in anyway beyond that.

Yeah exactly. San Bernardino isn’t exactly a city that is flourishing economically. It’s rather depressing to go through the city as it’s lost much of its luster in the past 3 decades.

San Berdo didn’t have much luster in 1975. I remember.

Today she and her co-workers received a talk from the police on how to react to an active shooter in her classroom (titled something like, “Hide, Flee, Fight.”) Police told the group to attack the shooter because they don’t expect this.

She’s a 40yo, 100 lb. woman with a PhD, and a pacifist, and now she’s being told to be part of the defense from gun violence. Surreal. This is what it has come to in America.

No matter what any report will say, though, our cultural experience has been shown to be one in which we over-react to high-visibility items and ignore much more damaging chronic social problems.

There is a sad need for drama that this all fills. That’s why ABC west coast feed right now is going on and on shootings and terrorists, etc.

If there is an increase in the violent nature of disaffected young people then our society is probably going to over-react. Stereotypes will be made, innocent people will be tarred.

littlegreenfootballs.com

I admit, I hide it because I am afraid of people judging me. I’m afraid of both extremes- pity and condescension. Maybe it’s irrational on my part. I do find that most people are cool about it but I don’t go out of my way to disclose it to prospective employers or dates though I think people pick up on it anyhow.

Rather elaborate for work-place violence, given the accomplices. But I guess if someone really was angry at their boss then they could find a couple of others to round up into an action.

That’s the part that stuck out to me. It’s one thing for a person to snap and go ballastic, it’s an entirely different matter to get 2 other people involved in multiple homicides just because you’re not happy at work.

I’m putting the 24 hour rule in place myself. I know something horrible has happened, that a lot of people are dead, that at least 2 of the suspects are also dead. Beyond that I don’t KNOW anything, and taking in false info at this time will simply confuse the actual facts when they start to become available.

I make an extra effort to be empathetic. Yeah I hate that I have a hard time getting dates but I don’t hold it against women because of that and I certainly don’t hold teh delusions of grandeur about myself that Elliott did.

If I was a younger single woman looking for a smart guy, I’d be very interested in you because I’ve gotten to know you through all your commenting on here. You come across as empathetic as well as logical and decent. :-)

re: #411 CuriousLurker

I just came back to point something out. In the wee hours of the morning today I posted a fairly long comment about a 50-page report on radicalization that was released on Monday. Not a single lizard acknowledged it in any way.

We don’t know the motive for the shooting yet, but if it turns out to be Da’esh-inspired domestic terrorism carried out by Muslim U.S. citizens, then you’ll probably want to take a few minutes to familiarize yourselves with what’s in the report.

That’s all. I’m not staying tonight—can’t take this shit and it’s only gonna get worse.

Later.

I saw it but it was the wee hours of the morning and I wasn’t sure if it would load on my phone, as I was reading Twitter in bed before going to sleep. I am reading it now.

Yep.

I’m pretty sure virgin men in their 20’s suffered quite a bit of scrutiny after Eliot Rodger was revealed to be one last year.

As a virgin male in my 20’s, I’ve never felt inclined towards any form of violence because of my inability to form a romantic relationship. Depressed and anxious, yeah, but not enraged and pumping up my ego over it.

Heh why thank you. It’s funny. They say people on the spectrum aren’t empathetic. I think that word is used wrong. I think it’s more accurate to say that we have a hard time judging certain social situations. Take me for an example, I can’t read if I am being hit on unless it’s really really obvious.

This is what actually is getting me so wound up. Most of my most loyal and protective friends are Pakistani, and I have integrated into the Pakistani Community to the point that I have been taking on behaviours and parts of the culture in how I behave and dress. I worry about the people who have welcomed me, and in a few cases, enter their homes.

I have this really weird, but nice identity now. Half-in-one-world, half-in-the-other. A Hybrid.

Something doesn’t jive given the Syed Farook that works/worked for the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health which was the same agency that was under attack.

If you would have seen his posts on bodybuilding.com’s Misc section, you would have saw what kind of a fucked up person he exuded through his posts. Even the guys on the forum called him out on his blatant racism and his inflated ego of being a rich kid with a famous dad. He really thought he was owed a beautiful woman or two because of his upbringing.

Yeah I read his manifesto. It just reeked of entitlement and his racism, man his racism. The whole bitching about the girl he liked going out with a black guy. You weren’t owed her dude. I mean I won’t lie, I do get annoyed when I see what appear to be jackasses who seem to have no problem finding dates but then i remind myself that the dude’s probably a jackass anyhow.

The racial superiority complex just astounds me. Now I’m a boring white mutt but I know that certain groups in my boring white mutt self were one time treated with hostility either because of their religion or that they didn’t like “white”. Hell the whole division amuses me. German guy marries Irish girl, one part of Eastern European guy marries, another part girl. The son of the German/Irish couple marries the Eastern European couple’s daughter. Then you have me and my siblings. And now you have the little girl in my avatar whose mother is from Peru with some Anglo ancestry (Croatian/Spanish I believe) and some indigenous Incan and maybe even some African too. Plus even though I’m just her brother in law, her entire family treats me like family.
