Update: In Absolutely Bizarre Episode, Media Enter Shooters’ Apartment

US News • Views: 51,172

In the latest reports from San Bernardino, it’s looking like investigators have found a smoking gun linking the attack to Islamist terrorism: San Bernardino shooting tied to ISIS.

(CNN) Investigators think that as the San Bernardino, California, massacre was happening, female shooter Tashfeen Malik posted a pledge of allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi on Facebook, three U.S. officials familiar with the investigation told CNN.

Malik’s post was made on an account with a different name, one U.S. official said. The officials did not explain how they knew Malik made the post.

A law enforcement official said it appeared that Wednesday’s mass shooting — which left 14 people dead and 21 wounded before the two attackers, Malik and her husband, Syed Rizwan Farook, were killed in a shootout with police — may have been inspired by ISIS.

But none of the officials said that ISIS directed or ordered the attack. ISIS has called for people worldwide to launch attacks in its name, but isn’t known to have claimed credit for what happened in San Bernardino.

“This is looking more and more like self-radicalization,” a law enforcement official said.

Also today, in one of the more bizarre episodes we’ve seen on television in a while, reporters and members of the public were actually allowed to enter the attackers’ apartment: Journalists storm San Bernardino shooters’ apartment after landlord pries open door.

UPDATE at 12/4/15 11:25:03 am by Charles Johnson

The FBI has confirmed that they’re now investigating the attack “as an act of terrorism.”

If you are marrying a pharmacist, it might be prudent to find out if he/she has allegiance to an international terror organization.

Don’t recall the media rushing to search the home of the Planned Parenthood shooter. Or any of the other mass killers in recent memory. What makes them rush to do so here in this case? Salacious news is salacious, but there’s nothing newsworthy here, except the vile actions by the media ghouls rushing to be first into the apartment.

There’s also reports that Daesh is claiming credit for the attack. Well, why wouldn’t they? They’ll be more than willing to take credit - deserved or otherwise. Doesn’t hurt them in the slightest (from a recruitment/spreading terror aspect).

And of course the right wing is in its perpetual tizzy about refugees, the DHS inability to vet people, etc.

So, in other words SS/DD.

There’s instances where police have released photos from inside the homes of various shooters, but that’s not the same as a media scrum to be first to show something.

For instance, various photos of items from the Newtown shooter’s home were released by Connecticut police. That’s a far different scenario than a free-for-all today.

Allowing anyone access to the scene this soon after has the potential to disturb evidence that could come into play later (as if co-conspirators were later discovered domestically or abroad). It could ruin potential prosecutions too.

And for what? To see the banality of evil?

True, she might have some recourse at a later date. But for now, if only her son and daughter-in-law were on the lease, it is kinda up to the landlord who gets in now. The agreement was between the landlord and the renters. If she was not part of that pact it seems the landlord has sole control of the contents by default.

If the dead couple were the lease holders, their rights transfer to their lawful heirs, in this case the infant daughter and her legal guardian, presumably the female shooter’s mother. I have also heard that the mother was the lease holder. In either case, it is an egregious violation of tenant rights for the landlord to let in anyone except himself or his lawful agents engaged in necessary business related to the lease. Grandstanding vulture media are not part of the lease.

The FBI classified this as terrorism.

The media classified the home as their walk-through scene/reality show locale.

And prosecutors will have a shit show on their hands if any other individuals are implicated in the crime as accomplices or other persons of interest due to the media ransacking the place on live TV. The location should have been sealed to the media. Period.

If law enforcement wanted to do what they’ve done in other cases by releasing selected photos, that’s fine, but this has the potential for ruining evidence that could potentially come into play down the road.

IMO, that’s going too easy on Mr. LaPierre, because it is a questionable claim at best. Going back and forth on that sideshow distracts from the main point —- that the NRA and Wayne LaPierre are promoting the sick nihilistic madness at the heart of US gun culture.

If as reported money changed hands then that’s conspiracy. The best the media can do here is feign ignorance, and that excuse wears incredibly thin considering all of them have access of their network’s legal department via speed dial on their cell phones. Well, if the “media” still included actual journalists, they should have. Back in the dark ages, when journalism schools outnumbered “communications” schools, media legality and ethics were taught. But, since the “media” now includes reality shows, entertainment shows, and untrained bobble-heads, doubtful that any of these morons know much of anything.

To the Muslims in our society, I’m sorry.

I’m sorry that we’re so fucked up and bigoted as a society that you end up attacked from both sides, under the same minuscule threat as the rest of us from actual attacks and from a much bigger threat of violence from the terrified masses. I’m sorry you have to put up with harassment, persecution, and collective blame that would cause any one of these righteous “patriots” an aneurysm to experience for half an hour.

You’re Americans just like the rest of us, and you deserve better. We all deserve better as a country then bowing to fear and hatred, but since it’s “good politics” I don’t see one side stopping it any time soon.

The best I can do is refuse to bow to it myself, to stand up and make my voice heard, and to let you know, both in words and in actions, that I repudiate the ugliness coming from some of my fellow citizens. Because if no one says anything, all you’ll hear is the ugliness.

I’m sorry.

I’ve mentioned here before (quite some time ago) that I don’t even have a problem with guns being registered. I’ve always provided my local local enforcement officials with a list of my weapons and their serial numbers for a number of reasons, not the least of which is in the case of something happening where I am unable for whatever reason not to be able to provide that information in real time, when time could very well be of the essence.
Conversely, I have no fear that providing that list will ever result in Obama or any other government coming into my house and seizing my guns.

Apparently I am too trusting in big government…

OK, here’s the thing I don’t understand about this whole thing:

Don’t most terrorists make a big deal about why they’re doing what they’re doing? Isn’t the goal of an ISIL member to be a martyr for the cause? So why would you leave no trace (or attempt to) of what your plan was and why you were doing it? If they didn’t want to die, they would have left the area, and might have got pretty far had they not just kept driving around San Bernardino. I know it’s early in the process, but other than a couple of stories about them looking up stuff online and possibly talking to a person of interest in the middle east, that’s all we know. But I thought that groups like ISIL and Al Qaeda liked to get the word out about what they’re doing. That’s the part I don’t get, unless I’m missing something.

Oh Good God…Rod Dreher has another case of flaming butt hurt over todays’ Daily News cover mocking Wayne LaPierre:

I get that the editors of the Daily News, and many others, do consider them to be terrorists. What this designation is going to do is to make them dig in even harder, convinced that the Democratic Party and the liberal media would come take their guns away if they had the chance. It cannot be comfortable for Wayne LaPierre to see himself likened to mass murderers on the front page of a major American newspaper. But the Daily News has just made his job significantly easier.

I don’t vote on the Second Amendment, but I very much vote on the First Amendment, specifically freedom of religion. We have seen over and over liberals in the media, in politics, in academia, and so forth, denounce people like me as “bigots,” the equivalent of racist segregationists, and as the kind of people who make life in American unsafe. I don’t know about my fellow First Amendment fans, but this has made me dig in much deeper, because I’m absolutely convinced that if the Democrats had the power to do so, they would take away as much freedom of religion as they could, because many of them neither practice it nor value it, but instead see it as a threat.

How can I be a good Christian if I’m not allowed to impose my views on others in places they’re not allowed to escape?

I actually had a coworker complain that what everyone’s talking about is freedom FROM religion.

I love that he immediately sees gun control as a threat to his freedom to keep changing churches.

I think US gun culture can be regarded as a depraved religious cult having human sacrifice as its central celebration. What’s new here is that the sacrifices are offered randomly.

Also:

I get that the editors of the Daily News, and many others, do consider them to be terrorists. What this designation is going to do is to make them dig in even harder, convinced that the Democratic Party and the liberal media would come take their guns away if they had the chance. It cannot be comfortable for Wayne LaPierre to see himself likened to mass murderers on the front page of a major American newspaper. But the Daily News has just made his job significantly easier.

He ought to go talk to Max Cleland about bad associations.

They are commonplace and quite easy to purchase in many other states. Apparently they were bought through legal means several years ago. I’m sure we’ll get their full history soon.

No true gun owner…</blockquote

Also, Christian is the new black. (Bryan Fischer)

Guns owners and Ted Nugent are Rosa Parks.

Guns are discriminated against because they’re black. (former NRA Pres, Marion Hammer—actual quote, “Banning people and things because of the way they look went out a long time ago,” Hammer said. “But here they are again. The color of a gun. The way it looks. It’s just bad politics.”

Martin Luther King, Jr. would have been honored by National Gun Appreciation Day. (Larry Ward, Chairman of Gun Appreciation Day)

re: #106 klys (maker of Silmarils)

To the Muslims in our society, I’m sorry.

Thanks, {{{klys}}}

I just… I. Can’t. Even.

All I can say at this point is knowing that there are good people out there is the only thing keeping me sane right now. Regarding the prayer thing, I saw this earlier and found it quite touching:

My church befriended a mosque over the summer and has maintained consistent contact with its imam and members over the past several months. I talked to our imam friend over the phone this afternoon and heard him express the pain of having his beautiful and beloved faith maligned and misunderstood in the wake of each terror attack. My heart broke for him as I expressed my church’s commitment to continuing our friendship and our intention to pray for members of his mosque who experience discrimination and ostracism. He was deeply moved that our congregation would be willing to mention his mosque in prayer during a worship service, despite our theological differences.

Clergy friends and fellow church leaders, when you pray for victims of terror attacks here and abroad, please remember those who are mislabeled, pigeonholed, and victimized through acts of social violence in our country- including our Muslim brothers and sisters who live peacefully, but are so profoundly misunderstood. Please pray for them today and especially on Sunday, and please consider reaching out in friendship to a mosque in your area for interfaith dialogue. They need displays of friendship, solidarity and understanding more now than ever. –Crystal Lewis […]

They then searched his home, finding a loaded assault rifle, a ballistic body armor vest, a tactical vest and three high-capacity magazines carrying 8,300 rounds.

Apparently the magazines hold 2,766.666 (repeating obviously) bullets a piece.

Maybe the magazines were ‘American Shooter’ and ‘Guns and Ammo’ and they were counting all the rounds in all the guns in all the pictures?
